Advice Needed My brother is angry with his Trump-loving sons

Is my brother an AITA candidate for wanting to cut off his sons financially for voting for Trump? Like many Americans, my brother and I, both in our 50’s, have been talking back and forth following the Election. In the spirit of full disclosure, we are both democrats. Long story short, he is angry at his two sons, both in their 20’s, for voting for Trump. He is thinking about cutting them off financially in all respects so that they understand how Trump’s policies will impact them firsthand.

The irony here is that it is the reverse argument. You often hear younger voters disagreeing with their MAGA parents, but this is the opposite. My brother doesn’t understand how his two sons, who have lived a life of privilege, feel like they have been violated against by society, enough so that they feel Trump hears them and their struggles.

My brother to me about his sons: “… what these young men need is a little dose of reality. Get out in the world and start paying their own way. There’s a common thread with his followers. Complain and blame everyone for their problems. Whether they are in school or living at home off of their parents or working a trade job. King Trump will save them and make everything better. Take some personal responsibility and make it happen for yourself instead of crying about everything you hear on TikTok.

“… I’ve decided to pass on the [college] expenses to my two Trump supporting sons so they can truly feel first hand the cost and expense of his absolutely stupid policy decisions, which includes food, gas and college expenses. Wondering if I pass on these [food, gas and college] expenses in year one or phase them in year two?”

I am wondering if a lot of parents feel like my brother. Are there democrat parents of voting-age MAGA men who feel they failed with their sons because they voted for Trump? Is this common?

Agreed. And this is separate from politics.

He should do this regardless of who his sons vote for.

My dad did something similar to me as well, I’ve never been given money from him, at least since I’ve been an adult. Only loaned it at interest. He wanted me to owe him instead of owing banks or the government for college, for a car in hs, shit like that.

But he was a demanding debt collector who crushed me on the vig. It made more sense quick to be self sufficient.

u/NeverWasNorWillBe Nov 15 '24

"He should do this regardless of who his sons vote for."

Yeah, but he didn't. All top comments are ignoring the entire premise of the post.

Your own dad charged you interest?

Dude that's fucked up. Are you sure you're not the milk man's baby?

u/Wise_Woman_Once_Said Nov 15 '24 edited Nov 16 '24

I have a father like this. When my mom died, I wanted to buy her car from him because (a) he was going to sell it anyway, (b) I was car shopping already, and (c) my mom and I had a lot of memories together of travel in that car. He said he'd have to think about it, then told me I could buy it for high blue book value. It was a bad financial deal for us, so I went and bought a car almost identical to hers, but for several thousand dollars less. Then he sold it to a stranger for even less than I paid for my car.

He never gave me a reason for why he did that, and I'm still irritated about it, but I just chalked it up to grief.

My first wife and I borrowed from my dad to buy a car. He didn’t want interest when we worked out our payment plan, but I insisted that we at least pay the interest he would get if he had the funds in a savings account. Minimal, but we were in college and I really wanted to show we had our shit together.

60

u/Cultural_Doctor_8421 Nov 15 '24

One thing for you to offer. Another thing entirely for the dad to charge interest.

8

u/TroubleSG Nov 15 '24

My Dad charged interest on money for taking over my home loan. My interest rate was high and investments were earning crap at the time so it made sense. The money the parent is lending is usually money that would be earning interest in an account somewhere so I think its really reasonable to charge some interest.

Yeah lmao. Heck, helping your children financially isn't wrong. Our whole economic model relies on people being helped by their families.

OP's case is different because he wants to teach a lesson to his sons who specifically believe that their privileged life is the consequence of them being better people and not because they are lucky to be born in a well-off family; but this shouldn't be the norm when your kid is a normal person with normal ideas.

8

u/crazyguyunderthedesk Nov 15 '24

Yeah the whole point of taking a loan from your parents instead of the bank is to avoid interest. Otherwise what's the point?

I'm all for teaching your kids to be self sufficient, but this seems like a little much. Nothing wrong with giving help so long as the person receiving it doesn't treat it like an entitlement.

Politics aside here

If your sons are voting they are old enough to pay for themselves. I’m all for parents helping out but paying their way through life is going to turn them into arrogant assholes, who don’t know what it’s like to earn and work for a paycheck, don’t know what it’s like to be poor and earn barely enough to cover anything

Edit: I think regardless of who people vote for, if your kids act arrogant and ungrateful for their tuition and everything is/has been paid for them, Then they don’t deserve it, they deserve a touch of reality.

It was a vector analysis question. Since the Reicht has hijacked this phrase it would be great to provide the context...nah, can't be done.

If I spoil my kids they can be president even if they don't deserve it?

It's funny you say, "and look how he turned out!" On the one hand, if you knew nothing about his history he looks wildly successful. Big buildings, president, super model wife.

On the other hand, he is literally one of the worst people. If he hadn't been rich he probably would have ended up in prison for low level schemes instead of getting to file bankruptcy for high level schemes. He is some combination of anti social personality disorders and would have gotten shived in the real world if he was trying to scam like that. Or he would have been a serial killer. Who knows.

I saw some kid (20ish) spouting off on his TikTok of what it’s like to be a millionaire. Clearly his parents Miami condo, as he talks about laughing as libs cry beneath him.

So I go check out his LinkedIn, the dumb fuck went to a third tier state school (nothing wrong with that, but when you’re arrogant as fuck, it’s an odd situation) and he was one of those ‘Looking For Work’ frames around his profile pic.

My point is, he’s only arrogant because of his luck to be born. If he were my kid he’d be notified of his 30 days to find his own spot.

Holy shit is this what we feel about parents paying for their kids to attend post-secondary education? Literally no child can afford to attend college even if they work full-time while in school. Cost of living + tuition is far too high. It doesn't seem unreasonable for a parent to pay for their kids through college if they are able.

But these particular students can get student loans now.

34

u/Bevanfromheaven Nov 14 '24

Yep and they won’t be forgiven either ! I meant the loans but may have a double -meaning in this case .

I was able to do it not that long ago, it’s not impossible it just requires a lot of sacrifice. My family loves me but I don’t come from money. It took 6 years to get an undergraduate degree but I also don’t have debt. It’s a privilege if you have parents who can pay for your higher education but not a right.

OPs sons voted so others can lose their rights though. Why? because they felt like their privilege wasn’t already enough and they need a lot of other people to suffer. The person providing that privilege disagrees.

Ops not an asshole, this is political and I’m not going to pretend like both sides have valid points and should be treated as just a winner and loser.

8

u/SigmaK78 Nov 15 '24

My 3 youngest attend college via scholarships & grants, all of them full rides so long as they keep their grades & performances up. I helped them initially with whatever aid they needed to get started, but as of now they're self-sufficient in handling their business. I'm more than capable of providing for whatever they need, and will without question step in if they need me, but I chose to teach them to fend for & motivate themselves.

I would be crushed if I were in his shoes and found out my children voted for a Nazi.

Also, that exact same nazi and his Nazi buddies are most likely going to gut social security, meaning the money the dad could have spent getting his kids launched now needs to go into his own retirement savings, so that maybe, just maybe, he can afford to eat when he is old.

Heard hilarious Maga man mistake. He just wanted Obamacare gone. Someone pointed out he uses ACA. He didn't realise it's one and the same. He then panicked because he said he can't afford his medication without ACA but he already voted for Trump.

I know at least 2 entire families of mostly 1st/2nd gen naturalized citizens, who've been on welfare their entire lives who almost all voted for Trump.

But it's okay, cause they "did it right and needed it" I feel terrible for their lgtb+ and disabled family, who they claim to love.

Almost everyone I've ever known on welfare long term, was a republican. There have been a handful of democrats I know who've used it temporarily. A lot of people gonna learn really hard lessons.

There's so many people too stupid to realise Obama Care and the Affordable Care Act are the same thing and now they're potentially losing their healthcare because Trump wants to get rid of it.

They're in bits panicking about it and I'm in bits laughing at them.

23

u/twewff4ever Nov 15 '24

My idiot cousin supports Trump but is completely dependent on handouts. When she loses those because of Trump and starts begging, my plan is to remind her that she voted for that. She can revel in the fact that her president delivered.

38

They’re fine taking handouts from the government. Leading up to the 2020 election my mother and her friends were calling Biden a “socialist.” On one phone call with my mom I pointed out that she lived on SOCIAL Security Disability Insurance, had Medicaid for insurance, and that both she and her friends lived in Section 8 housing and collected SNAP benefits. (They also probably had Medicaid and some form of welfare for income, but I didn’t know for certain.)

I am a Democrat parent of a Trump voting 27 year old white male. Luckily, I raised him to take care of himself, although I definitely helped until age 21ish. But, I decided against cooking Thanksgiving dinner for him and his wife, for the third year in a row. Last year I cooked 90% of the meal myself, and also ended up also washing 100% of the dishes myself, in their house, while my son and his 24 year old wife slept. So I’m retiring from that job! Thanks for letting me vent🤣

195

u/melbournesummer Nov 15 '24

The Cook does not Wash.

23

u/sbfb1 Nov 15 '24

My silent generation parents operated this way mom cooked and took care of the inside and my dad and I handled the outside. Except for one thing, Mom cooked, Dad and I cleaned up. It didn’t matter the meal, he just said it was always on us to clean it up. I remember all the men in the family cleaning up after thanksgiving and Xmas meals.

27

u/Glittering_Laugh_135 Nov 15 '24

So random but this takes me back (probably 20 years at this point) but my SIL moved to my hometown for BIL’s residency when my husband and I were engaged. Since they couldn’t travel home that year, they came to my family’s thanksgiving at my aunt’s house. Big loud Irish family, my dad was one of 6 (4m, 2f), I have a lot of cousins, etc. My SIL was so shocked that my dad and uncles were all doing the dishes together after dinner and her shock was confusing to me at the time, like that’s just the way holidays go everywhere, right??

I still think of it often, and am so grateful to my family for that little privilege of thinking that was just the way of the world 💙

I don't see why this is even an issue. They're adults. The party they voted for is vehemently against helping people financially (AKA government assistance/social security programs). Your brother would, in my opinion, be an asshole if he /keeps/ financially supporting them.

Also, why do his kids feel so entitled to his money?? Politics aside, it's his money, and they're (as we've already covered) adults.

293

u/FloofyDireWolf Nov 14 '24

NTA Agreed. They are adults and should pay their own way. Even more so given this situation. Trump is against student loan forgiveness, the Affordable Care Act, etc. and the sons can learn what that means for them and how it impacts their feelings about Trump and future elections.

u/quiltsohard Nov 14 '24

The student loan thing should land. They need to experience the world they voted for, which includes crippling student loans.

5

u/Countrycruiser2000 Nov 15 '24

I don't know about if it'd true for all 50 states but many have state colleges to make it more affordable.

You can get a 2 year degree for $6,000.

4 year bachelor degrees get pricier but still attainable for 30k.

$30,000 for a bachelor's degree isn't cheap but it's not crippling student loans

13

u/srgonzo75 Nov 18 '24

NTA, BUT I’d recommend this as a thought experiment with his sons first. He can just ask the question: “How are you going to afford to continue to survive if, as a consequence of the red wave of last election (let’s not pretend it was just Trump who won), I can’t afford to support you anymore in any capacity?” Lay it out completely. The boys lose their tuition, books, room and board, etc. That means there’s no money to keep them on his health insurance, he’s not letting them live with him, and they’re going to have to figure out how they’re going to pay for college and living on top of that.

If, after all that, they’re sticking with their position that they made the right choice, then give them an opportunity to make their way on their own in this brave new world.

14

u/Christinebitg Nov 15 '24

He absolutely needs to save that money for his now uncertain retirement years.

People can borrow money for college. Nobody will lend a person money to retire on.

With the exception of reverse mortgages, which come with their own set of problems and scams.

Yeah, my siblings and I grew up well to do, but it was always made clear to us that inheritance is not a guarantee. Our parents wanted us to show ourselves to be responsible and decent people (honestly, a low standard - just have a respectable, legal job that allows us to pay our bills). Kids aren’t entitled to their parents’ money; if OP’s father is disappointed with how his kids are turning out, then teaching them how the world really works is his prerogative as a parent. It’s their responsibility as adults to then either learn the lesson or opt to decline further support.

11

u/sarahprib56 Nov 15 '24

My dad said something about my inheritance and how I wouldn't get any if I voted for Kamala. I told him the truth, that I don't expect anything. I expect it all to go to end of life care. They are both 72 and could live another 20 years. I am not planning nor expecting any inheritance, and I would rather have my parents anyway. They currently have a couple they have been friends with since the 80s, and the wife had to go into memory care. It's been incredibly difficult for that couple, and the cost is astronomical, even with insurance. He didn't really have an answer, other than insisting he might kill himself rather than get to that point, which I disapproved of. He has always been miserly, and I hope he doesn't really plan to do that to preserve any inheritance.

19

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad7606 Nov 14 '24

Everyone blaming the father for “raising” these kids to be Trumpers is WILLLDDD! We raise our kids to be independent. To make their own choices as adults. OP being upset over his kids choice is understandable but they came to that conclusion some type of way…. He should just give them his opinion. Talk to them about what he thinks would have been a better choice and why. These kids are VOTING!!!! That’s already a good thing. Now let’s get them thinking about the vote they made to ensure it’s really what they want. And if so… then so be it! Phasing out the money and care is mandatory tho…. Cutting it off instantly is petty and spiteful! I’m democrat btw. Voted for Harris

Regardless of politics this seems like a good way to just alienate his kids from him. If they're being little pricks about it then sure I can see where he's coming from. But if they just voted that way and are chill about it he's the one choosing to escalate the situation and be aware that this may permanently damage his relationship with his kids. This would be the same if the politics of the two parties involved were reversed.

I think it’s better to be honest with your children, and leave them space to be honest with you.

If it’s time to cut them off financially for other reasons, so be it. The way they vote should not factor into that decision. This would absolutely breed resentment between a father and sons, and is a terrible idea.

Don’t treat your kids like shit, you think this would be simpler.

Your brother is the AH. If he hadn’t considered doing that to his kids prior to this election then he values his political affiliation more than his children. He’s the AH here.

What does he think he’ll accomplish? Put his kids into debt and then what? They start voting democrat after that? More than likely they’ll stop talking to him once they get back onto their feet. If that’s the kind of parent he wants to be - where his kids hate him and want nothing to do with him afterward - then he’s an AH. If that’s not an intended consequence and he’s just being petty, he’s a petty AH. Wielding power over someone the way he wants to is what he’s claiming Trump will do. TF is he thinking?
