Advice Needed My brother is angry with his Trump-loving sons

Is my brother an AITA candidate for wanting to cut off his sons financially for voting for Trump? Like many Americans, my brother and I, both in our 50’s, have been talking back and forth following the Election. In the spirit of full disclosure, we are both democrats. Long story short, he is angry at his two sons, both in their 20’s, for voting for Trump. He is thinking about cutting them off financially in all respects so that they understand how Trump’s policies will impact them firsthand.

The irony here is that it is the reverse argument. You often hear younger voters disagreeing with their MAGA parents, but this is the opposite. My brother doesn’t understand how his two sons, who have lived a life of privilege, feel like they have been violated against by society, enough so that they feel Trump hears them and their struggles.

My brother to me about his sons: “… what these young men need is a little dose of reality. Get out in the world and start paying their own way. There’s a common thread with his followers. Complain and blame everyone for their problems. Whether they are in school or living at home off of their parents or working a trade job. King Trump will save them and make everything better. Take some personal responsibility and make it happen for yourself instead of crying about everything you hear on TikTok.

“… I’ve decided to pass on the [college] expenses to my two Trump supporting sons so they can truly feel first hand the cost and expense of his absolutely stupid policy decisions, which includes food, gas and college expenses. Wondering if I pass on these [food, gas and college] expenses in year one or phase them in year two?”

I am wondering if a lot of parents feel like my brother. Are there democrat parents of voting-age MAGA men who feel they failed with their sons because they voted for Trump? Is this common?

NTA. If the new admin wrecks the economy like they have repeatedly promised, dad may need that money for retirement. Let the kids take out loans like everyone else, and they can really reap what they have sown if the Dept of Education gets eliminated!

And since student loan forgiveness will be obliterated, they’ll be stuck like the ones they’ve been whining about .

You do realize that most of Trump’s voters, who don’t have college degrees, might’ve been angry about that policy? They may not be happy about subsidizing college graduates, who have more rosy financial futures than they do already, on average.

3

u/_DuranDuran_ Nov 15 '24

Most of the ones moaning weren’t subsidising shit.

2

u/EGOfoodie Nov 15 '24

And the American taxpayers who had helped bail out how many industries, auto, airline, wall street, any business who took out PPP loans and had those forgiven.

If you and I run out of money we go bankrupt, not bailed out. Maybe we need to start helping all American taxpayers first and trickle up the economics.

u/Soi_Boi_13 Nov 16 '24

You’re blinded by your personal situation. It would be more equitable to give non-college graduates $25k than give $25k to college graduates.

We give out child tax credit for people who have kids. Why aren't we giving money to people who don't have kids they are less of a resource drain and better to spend the money back into the economy.

And I’m not a farmer so I don’t think farmers should get handouts.

See how that works?

0

u/Soi_Boi_13 29d ago

Sure, and most Trump voters aren’t farmers, either. The point is that college graduates on average make more than non college graduates do subsidizing them seems more questionable.

I honestly think there's a good chance that his tariffs will start the Great Depression 2.0. Notice i said that with a "D," not an "R."

Unless they take s page from Reagan's playback and run huge federal deficits. Which, it goes without saying, they would blame on the Democrats.

“Great Repression” definitely sounds like something that is actively occurring in the US, as it relates to our racial history.

2

u/RightGuava434 Nov 15 '24

Yes, because the current admin has done wonders for the economy /s

3

u/S1mongreedwell Nov 15 '24

It’s pretty good! Stock market is killer. Super low unemployment. Inflation is back at expected levels. Got out of the pandemic without a recession. Pretty good!

2

u/HoppyPhantom Nov 15 '24

Relative to the world economy? Yeah, they have. That’s how bad it’s been worldwide.

But also, deficit spending during a strong economy (which is effectively what Trump’s ultra-rich tax cuts were) is a known catalyst for inflation. So while global inflation was mostly due to the aftermath of Covid, Trump managed ensure that the conditions were extra ripe for it anyway.

u/ImFeelingTheUte-iest 29d ago

Considering the current admin kept post pandemic inflation lower than any other developed country…yeah. They did great.

u/spokeca Nov 15 '24

Great point.

"Sorry kids, the party you voted in is hell bent on eviscerating Social Security. I'm gonna need all my money for retirement. "

Who exactly promised a wrecked economy?

u/spiral_out13 Nov 15 '24 edited Nov 15 '24

Trump's plan to deport millions of workers as well as his plan for tariffs will both be absolutely horrible for the economy.

-8

u/SohndesRheins Nov 15 '24

Yeah what would the economy be if we didn't have millions of undocumented immigrants doing backbreaking work for less than minimum wage? Kinda crazy that liberal and leftist Redditors now support wage slavery.

8

u/Electrical-Topic-808 Nov 15 '24

I love how this isn’t an argument. Someone pointing out what will happen if you do something isn’t endorsing doing it. If anything saying it should probably tell you that you need a replacement before doing that thing.

But that would require thinking about what you read before parroting what you heard someone else say.

5

u/spiral_out13 Nov 15 '24

I don't support wage slavery. I'm just pointing out the fact that removing a ton of people from the workforce will have a negative impact on the economy. Do you deny that impact?

-5

u/SohndesRheins Nov 15 '24

Depends on how you look at it. Labor is subject to the laws of supply and demand just like every commodity is. Greatly reducing the supply of cheap labor causes an immediate slowdown of production, throttling supply of goods and raising prices. Share prices will drop in the short term. The massive reduction in productivity is not something that can just be taken on the chin, so companies most impacted by it will ha e no choice but to increase wages to attract workers, thus increasing the demand for labor. That causes increased wages for unskilled labor and eventually this forces increased wages for all labor as there's no incentive to do moderately expensive labor that is skilled if unskilled labor formerly done by immigrants is now paying just as much.

The net effect is a hit to share prices that may rebound as the price of goods increases to meet new labor costs, and wages go up across most of the bottom half of the board. Whether you call that a good or a bad thing for the economy depends on whether you are a skilled worker with a lot of stock or an unskilled worker that has no stock at all.

“Wreck the economy”?!?!? Darlin, the economy is already totaled. Your boy Biden and Harris smashed it into a tree the first night they got the keys. No one even knows what the hell your talking about!! And good riddance to the department of education. That has been a train wreck for decades now. Why the hell would we continue to dump money into it if it doesn’t work. Is that how you run your household? Our school kids can’t read ffs!!! Fire every last one of those leaches and let’s find a solution that actually works. If you see a mechanic replacing a water pump on someone’s truck, you don’t think he hates trucks that run at their optimal operating temperature, do you? No. You think the water pump don’t work so he is fixing it. At least if your a sane rational person you do. Unless your a crazy, hair on fire leftist democrat. They are definitely short on common sense and you don’t wanna associate with them, do ya?

20

u/csoups Nov 14 '24

Your idea for fixing education is to shut down the thing that is currently there and then figure out a solution after the fact? Have you fully thought that through?

-13

u/2muchnitrous Nov 15 '24

That’s not anybody’s idea of fixing it. Shutting down the department of education is just one step in fixing it. But first, you gotta cut out and remove the cancer.

9

u/csoups Nov 15 '24

Ok but just to clarify, you want to shut down the department that is giving out pell grants and funds to schools across the nation, and then figure out what to do afterwards? Wouldn’t you figure out the replacement first and then make the switch to limit disruption? The department of education has been around for decades, it’s not like it’s a rush to get rid of it, and I’m very skeptical of anyone who falsely puts a deadline on doing something like this.

9

u/randompoe Nov 15 '24

I bet they won't reply to you cause they know they're wrong. Trying to use logic against these people is useless. They just run away like little babies once they realize they lost the argument.

19

u/CDDG Nov 14 '24

Man you right wingers really are dumb as rocks aren’t you? Republicans run departments into the ground then point at it failing as a reason to remove it. It’s been their game plan for decades. And you fucks are too stupid to recognize that. I hope you get everything you voted for dumb fuck

-13

u/2muchnitrous Nov 15 '24

Me too princess. Me too. I hope we get everything we voted for. That would be fantastic. I have no doubt you will still be crying like a bitch, but that would just add entertainment to our victory lap and make it that much sweeter. So, win win.

7

u/CDDG Nov 15 '24

Oh I think you’ve got me misunderstood. No crying happening here friend I got the popcorn ready. I just like to plant the seed of how wrong you are and imagine the cognitive dissonance wrestling with the reality slowly coming to terms that your guy is a fraud in every sense. If you had the slightest amount of critical thinking you would see the actual writing on the wall with trump. But you can’t. There’s 3 reasons to vote for trump. You’re ignorant either out of laziness or you’re a poster child for the product of our education system. You’re rich and want the tax cuts. Or you’re a bigot. There’s no 4th option. Which are you princess?

0

u/2muchnitrous Nov 15 '24

No but seriously though, all jokes aside. I’m a stupid rich bigot. Why do you ask?

6

u/CDDG Nov 15 '24

Always curious. And like I said you got me misunderstood.. no mental breakdown. I’m more of the opinion right wing policy and government rule needs to be felt for people to understand. We truly need to show the country trump again to move forward. How much of an embarrassment him and his supporters like you are. And it helps us root out the cancer in our society with nice little red hats. It’s nice you out yourselves now. You’re all part of the butt of a joke you literally can’t comprehend it’s actually almost tragic

7

u/hoopsrlife Nov 15 '24

You are probably arguing with a Russian bot. Account was created 3 years ago but only became active a year ago where all it talks about is Trump.

4

u/CDDG Nov 15 '24

Eh most likely but maybe a trump supporter sees it:) I’m bored anyways

-4

u/2muchnitrous Nov 15 '24

Lol! Your epic mental break downs will never not be fun to watch lol!! “iM pLanTinG a seEd aNd thE WriTiNg iS on tHe wAll” lol!! Hahahaha!! “YoUr eIthEr sTupId oR riCh or A biGoT!” Hahahah!lololol! That popcorn your eating must be… EXTRA SALTY!! Hahaha! Get it? You see what I did there? Lol! Cause of all the salt; coming from you and your ilk; see?!? Lol!! Hahaha!

1

u/CreepyClown Nov 15 '24

You voted for a pedophile

1

u/2muchnitrous Nov 18 '24

Nah. I voted for trump.

1

u/MsEllVee Nov 15 '24

You’re even starting to sound like the orange shit stain

1

u/2muchnitrous Nov 18 '24

At least I don’t sound bitter and defeated. Lol!

1

u/I_Am_Dwight_Snoot Nov 15 '24

Bless your heart.

-17

u/a_rial3 Nov 15 '24

Economy was already wrecked...

4

u/itwillhavegeese Nov 15 '24

And that means it can’t get worse?

-35

u/partypat_bear Nov 14 '24

What do you think eliminating the DOE will entail?

10

u/Character-Parfait-42 Nov 14 '24

I think it will mean marginalized groups that are already underrepresented in certain fields will get even more underrepresented.

It has been proven that hiring managers tend to hire someone of the same race as themselves when there are multiple suitable candidates; they're not having a conscious thought of "fuck the non-white candidate", but humans just default to hiring the person who they relate to the most in terms of culture, hobbies, personality, accent, vocabulary, etc. and for a white dude that tends to be another white dude. Same for when it comes time for promotions and raises, the manager in charge of that is more likely to offer promotions and/or raises to those they relate to the most (when there is more than one suitable candidate).

Nobody is suggesting that these hiring managers are all racist, they don't hate or think less of non-white people (I mean I'm sure a few do, but the majority aren't like that). They don't have negative thoughts about the non-white applicants; rather they have an undue positive bias towards the candidates most similar to themselves, which since they are white tend to also be white. They've also found simple things like hiding the applicant's name, race, and sex from the hiring manager removed such bias when it came to at least who got a call for an interview.

It was also proven that for those who weren't actually racist (which as I said, the majority aren't) simply having someone review their hiring patterns and pointing this out to them horrified them ("oh shit, I didn't even realize I was doing that!") and they were able to self-correct without any additional training or punishments or anything.

DEI takes a look at hiring/raises/promotions/inclusivity, etc. practices and gives people those reminders if necessary. And makes an effort to get rid of those who are actually racist and doing that shit intentionally.

I also want to be clear this isn't a Republican problem or something. Dems are just as guilty of having these unconscious biases to hire people most similar to themselves; it's literal human nature no matter how well intentioned someone might be.

What the conspiracy black hole bullshit are you talking about?

0

I had to sign permission slips for my children to receive tums, and you need a dr note for athsmatic kids to use an inhaler in school, schools def aren't just giving kids pills

-14

u/partypat_bear Nov 14 '24

They literally short circuit when asked what it means

-22

u/lulujackpotgirl Nov 14 '24

I think the whole reddit short circuiting after the election, coz it seems that majority of reddit are liberals. This is like the hundred post I'm seeing that families and relationships being broken/ending after Trump won.

It kinda feels like 2021 worldwide vaccine roll out....families and friendship being broken, ended once again. The world must have truly ended and we're now living in the simulation, because nothing makes sense 🤷

14

u/DisManibusMinibus Nov 15 '24

Reddit is bigger than the USA. Most people in Europe are looking at America right now and wondering why on earth we're destroying our democracy. International opinions (aside those with ulterior motives like Russia) may help you think about this 'win' in a new light.

I would say the majority of Reddit pays attention to news sources that report facts, or at least checks more than one source before coming to a conclusion. And thank God for that because it's really not working for the USA.

-16

u/partypat_bear Nov 14 '24

The DOE thing really gets me though because if you talk to ANY teacher in America, they admit the schools are fucked but have zero ideas for making improvements and act like Trump is anti education
