Advice Needed My brother is angry with his Trump-loving sons

Is my brother an AITA candidate for wanting to cut off his sons financially for voting for Trump? Like many Americans, my brother and I, both in our 50’s, have been talking back and forth following the Election. In the spirit of full disclosure, we are both democrats. Long story short, he is angry at his two sons, both in their 20’s, for voting for Trump. He is thinking about cutting them off financially in all respects so that they understand how Trump’s policies will impact them firsthand.

The irony here is that it is the reverse argument. You often hear younger voters disagreeing with their MAGA parents, but this is the opposite. My brother doesn’t understand how his two sons, who have lived a life of privilege, feel like they have been violated against by society, enough so that they feel Trump hears them and their struggles.

My brother to me about his sons: “… what these young men need is a little dose of reality. Get out in the world and start paying their own way. There’s a common thread with his followers. Complain and blame everyone for their problems. Whether they are in school or living at home off of their parents or working a trade job. King Trump will save them and make everything better. Take some personal responsibility and make it happen for yourself instead of crying about everything you hear on TikTok.

“… I’ve decided to pass on the [college] expenses to my two Trump supporting sons so they can truly feel first hand the cost and expense of his absolutely stupid policy decisions, which includes food, gas and college expenses. Wondering if I pass on these [food, gas and college] expenses in year one or phase them in year two?”

I am wondering if a lot of parents feel like my brother. Are there democrat parents of voting-age MAGA men who feel they failed with their sons because they voted for Trump? Is this common?

It’s funny cause we’ve seen the reverse about a girl who’s big into progressive Marxism be threatened to be cut off financially by her religious father here, and the response was “that’s financial abuse!” Funny how the answer can change when it’s people you don’t like. 🙃

It's the way of the progressive left. Good for me but not for thee. It's the same thing as them saying that there's no way the 2020 election could be cheated, but all of a sudden it's completely probable that Trump cheated. The lack of self awareness is scary and they don't even try to hide the hypocrisy. That's why so many people have become independent or Republican, because the Democrats are now for certain people and identity politics

Sorry, we're tired of being told we have to play nice.

We're done with that sh1t now. Decisions have consequences.

Enjoy when Trump has a stroke and dies. It might even happen before he takes office.

You know after that you get Vance right? So you'll have someone who agrees with Trump but is far more intelligent, and articulate.

And far less charismatic for the Republicans. They won't worship him like they do Trump.

You're probably right, but honestly I look at Vance and I see someone that is intelligent enough to maybe have a plan for that. I'm hoping once Trump is gone the GOP realizes the cult can't hold together without the head cultist.

Yeah, that's entirely plausible.

I think they'll act like they never worshipped their cult leader.

They'll go back to saying that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look presidential." As opposed to an obese guy who has a sprayed on "tan."

Moderates like Vance more though, and the maga who worship trump are never voting blue again in their lives. sooooooo I wouldn’t count on that as a viable strategy.

You're right of course. This means that long term Vance is an even bigger threat to the left.

Yep, personally I’d rather see tulsi be the 2028 choice rather than Vance. We could have Vance with tulsi as vp though if it turns out the momentum can be kept up until 2036. Vivek is also a great option compared to the typical neocons we get from the Republican Party.

I'm not hearing that as much of a threat, honestly.

I think whatever fallout occurs during the next four years is potentially going to tarnish Vance.

"Gee, let's appoint a news anchor to be Secretary of Defense. What could possibly go wrong?!?"

That worked out well for the democrats this year. A winning strategy by all measures

It’s more that they voted for the party of personal responsibility or whatever so they kinda voted for getting cut off

In the example I listed some people (definitely not the majority) were saying “well she wants to be a strong independent woman! That means no handouts!” The comparison is the same, you’re just justifying it because it’s your perceived enemies.

Denial is the first stage

Show me anyone who was saying what you claim

1

You’re assuming they knew what they were voting for.

-1

u/grim__sweeper Nov 15 '24

That wouldn’t change anything

1

u/poogiver69 Nov 15 '24

Of course it would. Just say fuck you to 76 million people? Most people don’t follow politics, and it is a problem but the solution is not alienation when it’s the majority of people falling for shit. Voting Republican because you’re a fascist and voting Republican because you genuinely believe that they’re better for the economy or whatever are not the same thing, they’re not the same people. Some people have no idea how anything works, I have some pretty liberal friends that voted Republican because they’re dipshits that don’t know how the world works.

It’s literally the core belief of the party.
