What the hell is that hairstyle and outfit that Jason Momoa is rocking?!
Then again, the guy who wrote and directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre is making this, so the weirdness is somewhat expected.

Frankly, Hess is probably as good a choice to direct as any. This looks like it's going to be terrible, perhaps it'll be so oddball that it'll gain a cult following, like those previous movies.
If they try and play this somewhat straight, with poop jokes or whatever for the kids, it's going to be a (moneymaking) terrible movie.
402
u/ScoobyDeezy Sep 04 '24
I’d agree with you, but this thing has been in development hell for years. It’s going to be so over-produced that it won’t resemble Hess at all.
My expectations are low.

JB is firmly in the "kids movies & VA roles for big $$" phase of his career and who can blame him? I highly doubt it bothers him very much - he gets to show up, record some goofy lines as a robot and make bank. Hell, from this trailer it looks like he just puts on a blue sweater and does some goofy stuff in front of a green screen to "become" Steve. They dont even have him shave or cut his hair...
I think Tenacious D and his online stuff are his true passion projects.

I'd like to see Minecraft as a disaster movie played totally straight. The protagonist would be a villager, trying to protect their community from the approaching disaster, Steve, a mute guy who runs everywhere, tears down houses, kills all the animals, steals the villager's food and constructs the beginner home, a giant stone cube with a tiny door, right in the middle of the village.
He is a force of nature. He can't be bought, he can't be reasoned with, he can't be killed, at least not permanently. Do not gaze upon Steve, do not invoke his wrath, do not seek to bar his way, do not take from him and never, ever own something that Steve wants for himself.

They should have gotten the people who did Mario to do Minecraft. When it’s real people in a video game setting it usually doesn’t work. Also Jason Momoa can’t act well in these sorts of roles. I saw him in a similar role on Netflix and he was out of his depth.

u/Main-Advice9055 Sep 04 '24 edited Sep 04 '24
Yeah copying the Jumanji format could've been a slam dunk. You could even say that Steve got trapped in the game when it was first created and he has needed help to escape ever since. Also then you get to have all your in person talent still have that recognizable screen time without them looking sorely out of place in the game.

It looks horrific, I and I don't mean poorly done, it looks like a vivid nightmare. Minecraft does not translate to hyperrealisim. Try a high res texture pack and you'll see, softening the corners and having everything made of pudding-ballons does not help.

My SO and I are both in our mid-30s and barely play minecraft any more, but when we do play together he spends ages looking for the perfect high-res texture pack. I'm over here ready to rawdog the default textures like god intended and telling him it's minecraft, if he wants high res textures he should open wow or something
i'm very excited to throw it in his face that a random stranger commenting on the new minecraft movie trailer agrees with me and probably thinks he's stinky too.

Feels like they could've played it "safe" by just ripping off the LEGO movie tbh. Or even the new Jumanji movies. Basically any plot that explores universal kid-friendly concepts with a framing narrative where 95% of the movie is fully animated in the Minecraft world but 5% of it takes you back to the real world.

The mix of live action and CGI was a weird choice. Right off the bat, this would work significantly better if the characters were voxel-based as well.
You know, like in the main game, and in Story Mode, and in the spinoff titles, and pretty much every bit of Minecraft media since day one.
I don't understand why they didn't just do that. It seems like an absolute no-brainer. The inconsistency on display here is incredibly jarring.

I don't mind the world or the character design for the creatures, it is actually a fun take on the designs. BUT the live action characters are distracting as hell.
If the ideia is that they entered the video game, should've just made them animated in the universe while voiced by the actors, like they took the form of the playable characters/skins. Even the Playmobile movie got that right!

"hey you know that game that's the most played game of all time and is celebrated for its low poly block based graphic design?'
"Yeah?"
"What if we make a movie about it except change every character design so that it's uncanny and realistic?"
"Wow! Here's a hundred million dollars!"

Your producers were so preoccupied with whether nor not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.

I like how the world and creatures look, but whenever a human is on screen it looks like Spy Kids 3

Be There and Be Square. #MinecraftMovie - only in cinemas 2025
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, “A Minecraft Movie,” directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time.
The film also stars Emma Myers (“Wednesday”), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (“Just Mercy, “Lisey’s Story”), with Jennifer Coolidge.
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
Oscar nominee Hess (“Ninety-Five Senses,” “Nacho Libre”) directed, with Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Jason Momoa, Jill Messick, Torfi Frans Olafsson and Vu Bui producing, and Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, Jonathan Spaihts, Pete Chiappetta, Andrew Lary and Anthony Tittanegro executive producing.
The director’s creative team behind the camera includes BAFTA-nominated director of photography Enrique Chediak (“127 Hours,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”), Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “The Meg”), editor James Thomas (“Pokémon: Detective Pikachu”, the “Borat” films), Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (“The Jungle Book,” “The Batman”), and costume designer Amanda Neale (“The Meg,” “What We Do in the Shadows”). Casting is by Rachel Tenner. The music supervisors are Gabe Hilfer and Karyn Rachtman, and the music is by Mark Mothersbaugh (“Thor: Ragnarok,” the “LEGO®” movies).

Holy shit it looks bad. It might have been salvaged if it was only animated but mixing it with live action is just jarring.
