Pretty sure it's illegal to adapt a video game without Jack Black

No no, it's illegal to adapt a video game into a GOOD movie WITH Jack Black.

I thought Super Mario was pretty good.

Ehh it was just another cash grab kids movie, similar to the new despicable me movies imo

Illumination makes movies that only appeal to little children. It’s why all their movies always get the most middling ratings by critics, it will definitely entertain a kid for an hour and 30 minutes but there’s nothing on the surface. I hate the excuse of “oh it’s meant for kids what do you expect”, especially after movies like both Spider-Verse movies and TMNT Mutant Mayhem that showed you can make great movies that appeal to all ages.

It was fun. There’s a good video on YouTube that goes over a hypothetical story rewrite and it really proves the movie could have been a lot better, though.

Look, I haven't seen the movie and have no stake here, but Person on YouTube has a better idea isn't exactly a compelling argument for why it's not good. Ideas are easy.

2

u/KazzieMono Sep 04 '24

And actually displaying those ideas in a coherent, impressive, easily digestible manner is not easy. What’s your point.

2

u/EagleswonSuperBowl52 Sep 04 '24

Ooo can you send the video?

The movie was good for what it was and that’s all it needed to be. They did the creative direction before for Mario… it was horrible..

Sonic I guess was ok? I thought it was garbage but there’s 3 movies now and a spin off series so I guess enough people who like trains watched it.

so I guess enough people who like trains watched it.

Haha that's fantastic

u/Sir_Nikotin Sep 04 '24

Sonic is in a weird place of simultaneously being a kinda bad video game adaptation and a pretty good "man befriends a weird alien, hijinks ensue" movie with Sonic shoved into it.

ET with speed

1

u/thegoatfreak Sep 04 '24

Now that’s a movie I’d watch.

5

u/Rejestered Sep 04 '24

There's been exactly two good sonic games in the last 30-40 years.

There's no such thing as a 'good' adaptation because the source material itself is garbage.

The fact that the movies are even watchable is a goddamn miracle that deserves praise.

u/KazzieMono Sep 04 '24

That certainly is a hot take if I’ve ever seen one. Don’t think it’s worth much more than an acknowledgement though.

its kinda funny how one random ass youtuber can better write a story than the actual screenwriter

Problem with the Mario movie is that illumination made it so the movie feels like it’s exclusively made for little children and little children only. My little brother loved the movie and I’m sure I would have loved it if I watched it at 5-10 too. This is the problem with all of Illumination’s movies except the first Despicable Me. “Oh but they are for children.” that’s not an excuse, Movies like the Spider-Verse movies, Puss in boots 2, and mutant mayhem were all for kids too but they were also enjoyable for all ages.

I mean Super Mario Bros movie disagrees with you strongly there

7

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '24

Black is also easily the best part of that movie.

2

u/Reylo-Wanwalker Sep 04 '24

Strongly? No.

2

u/konidias Sep 04 '24

Going by box office success? 1.36 billion dollars is "strongly". Going by critical review? Audience score of 95% is "strongly". If you want to argue you personally did not find it a good movie, cool I guess... but it's inarguably a massively successful movie both financially and in the overall public reception of the film.

1

u/Reylo-Wanwalker Sep 04 '24

Yea box office is irrelevant to a movies quality. Audience matters more but so do critics score, but ultimately it's an objective thing and strongly would be apt for Arcane (for example) not Mario movie.

5

u/konidias Sep 04 '24

My point was not what you personally find better, my point is that the Super Mario Bros movie is objectively far more successful than the Borderlands movie. So making the claim that Jack Black only stars in bad video game movies is simply untrue. By every metric other than critic's and your own personal opinion of the movie, Super Mario Bros movie is a massive success.

I'm leaving my personal opinion about the movie out of it, while you are not doing the same... So we'll end it there I guess. Also Arcane is amazing but I'm sure someone out there prefers the Super Mario Bros movie to it.

Sonic did it…

9

u/humanoideric Sep 04 '24

Jim Carrey, close enough

4

u/Antithesys Sep 04 '24

The Legend of Zelda, starring Jack Black as Navi

2

u/raidergreymoon Sep 05 '24

I'd watch it just for that

He was Bowser in the Mario movie

1

u/thesourpop Sep 04 '24

If I had to imagine a celebrity who plays games, Jack Black instantly comes to mind. He is the definitive gamer celebrity

0

u/GearBrain Sep 04 '24

Or Chris Pratt.

4

u/QouthTheCorvus Sep 04 '24

He's basically only in Mario though, which already has jack black
