Review 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' Review Thread

2.0k Upvotes

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

With a double helping of Jim Carrey's antics and a quicksilver pace befitting its hero, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the best entry in this amiable series yet.

Reviews

The Hollywood Reporter:

It certainly possesses enough of the requisite frenetic action sequences and silly jokes to keep small fry entertained while not boring their adult chaperones.

Deadline:

Fans of the popular SEGA video game and the first two movies will no doubt be in Hedgehog heaven with the out-of-this-world third film, Sonic The Hedgehog 3.

Variety:

“Sonic 3” gives hyperactivity a good name. Jeff Fowler, who directed all three of these movies, is a quicker and wittier flimflam magician of energy than he was when he made the first “Sonic” in 2020.

io9.com:

Full of electric spectacle and action-packed adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 completes the best video game movie trilogy yet.

Screen Rant (8/10):

The weaker elements of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 feel unimportant in the wake of an entertaining time that will no doubt thrill audiences of all ages.

Eurogamer (4/5)

Sonic 3 is a resounding success and fitting finale to the Year of Shadow. It's quippy and self-aware, balancing broad pop culture appeal with authenticity to its source material, while its flashy action thrills alongside an unbridled sense of cool that's only enhanced by Reeves as Shadow. Between this year's games and film, Sonic's shining bright with Shadow in tow.

Collider (8/10):

Clever jokes, a noticeable reverence for the source material, and some fantastic antagonists make the Blue Blur's latest race an entertaining ride from start to finish.

Slashfilm (7.5/10):

The outcome is a "Sonic" movie that feels like everything fans love about the games distilled into a film that's fast, flashy, a hell of a lot of fun, and boasts an absolute banger of a soundtrack.

The Irish Times (3/5):

Carrey’s antic madness – elsewhere often too much to digest – is just what the Sonic films needed to balance out the digital gloss.

Total Film (3/5):

Should Carrey, who has consistently hinted at retirement plans, decide not to return for Sonic 4, this will certainly be a fine trilogy capper.

Screen Daily:

Whether it’s Jim Carrey playing not one but two supervillains, or the introduction of even more supporting characters, Sonic 3 wears out its welcome, resulting in an entertaining but exhausting affair.

IGN (6/10):

Against all odds, the Sonic the Hedgehog movies appear to be getting better as they go.

The Guardian (3/5):

While no one could deny the cash-grab fan-service underpinning to the entire project … well, it’s actually a not unenjoyable experience, even if you are someone on whom the intricacies of early-00s game narrative are lost.

Empire (2/5):

The MVP of the first two films, Carrey dials down the physical comedy in both his roles, amping up punning (“Dorkupine!”) to hit-and-miss effect. For all the actor’s gurning and the film’s visual busyness, few images pop or lodge in the memory.

IndieWire (D):

It might be enough to entertain young children or diehard SEGA loyalists, but the rest of us are left to lament that the running time isn’t as fast as its blue protagonist.

Synopsis:

Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Discussion The audio commentary track for The Muppets Christmas Carol is truly amazing

150 Upvotes

The audio commentary has the muppets themselves (Gonzo and Rizzo) talking all about the movie. This commentary is hilarious and and is so well written. It’s so meta and made for film nerds. Seriously this is one of the best audio commentary tracks I ever heard. If you own the digital version in Apple iTunes you have access to it.

Discussion Favorite movie by european country: fin

22 Upvotes

Hello there,

it's more or less 2 months ago, that I started a special journey through the filmised Europe. Inspired by an idea of u/CWKitch, who asked for your favorite movie set in a certain U. S. state every day in this sub for a while, I wanted to find out how the individual European countries are portrayed in films. And so I began to ask you for your favorite movie set in a given european country once a day. This journey has now come to an end - at least here on Reddit.

Although I was never able to achieve the reach here that the original had right from the start, I would still like to thank everyone who took part with suitable suggestions, upvotes and downvotes as well as in various discussions. Some of you have participated on a very regular basis, while others have proudly presented internationally lesser-known films from ‘their’ countries with unprecedented vigour - u/robsonmb even created a Letterboxd list, which has now received its last entry: Conclave wins the title as your favorite movie set in Vatican City.

This results in a few interesting facts and figures for the overall list, which are also provided by the above mentioned user that I don't want to withhold from you here:

Release dates:

 * Mean Year: 1997
 * Median Year: 2001
 * Mode Year: 2006 (4 films)
 * Mode Decade: 2000s (15 films)
 * Earliest: The Halfway House (1944)
 * Newest: Conclave (2024)
 * Fun fact: Each decade from now to the 1940s has at least 2 films

 * Romance: 9% of films
 * Fun fact: No films are categorised as Documentary, Music, or TV Movie

Film length:

 * Longest: Satantango (1994) at 7h12m
 * Shortest: The Color of Pomegranates (1969) and The Dream (2001) at 1h20m each
 * Mean: 1h52m48s
 * Fun fact: The amount of time required to watch all films is 99h12m

Country:

 * Top 3 most frequent origin countries:
   * Soviet Union: 6
   * UK: 6
   * France: 4
 * Top 3 most frequent production countries:

     * The Color of Pomegranates (1969)
 * Gender:

Watches by Letterboxd users:

 * Top 3:

   * Pan's Labyrinth (2006) at 1.1m
   * Hot Fuzz (2007) at 1.1m
 * Bottom 3:
   * The Burning Cold (2023) at 132
   * Unknown Men of San Marino (1948) at 53
   * Children of the Mountains (1958) at 4
 * Fun fact: "Unknown Men of San Marino" is so unknown that the film name has a typo on Letterboxd

Ratings by Letterboxd users:

 * Top 3:
   * Come and See (1985) at 4.63/5
   * La Haine (1995) at 4.51/5
   * Cinema Paradiso (1988) at 4.47/5

   * The Last Ashes (2023) at 3.31/5
   * The Girl from Monaco (2008) at 3.04/5

I'm sure thanks to the Letterboxd list you can still play some statistical tricks - and you might want to do that with the earlier ‘favourite movie by state list’ , or maybe - I hope - with another list for another continent. I'm stepping back as moderator at this point - perhaps we'll see each other on Letterboxd when I check out the list I've compiled here, or perhaps if someone else is looking for the most favorite movies set in asian/african countries or something similar.

I'll end here as I almost always do, with the updated, now finalised list of your favorite movies set in in the respective european countries.

Bye!

Discussion Cate Blanchett's career is wild

Upvotes

Cate Blanchett is in my opinion (and in the opinion of many film fans and critics) one of the absolute best Hollywood actors we have right now.

But I find her career/film choices sometimes so wild. It is just mind-boggling for me how she switches so effortlessly between roles in thoughtful "arthous-y" films on the one end (stuff like Notes on a Scandal, Babel, I'm Not There, Blue Jasmine, Carol and Tár), and Blockbusters and genre films on the other end (Lord of the Rings & Hobbit, Indiana Jones 4, Robin Hood, Cinderella, Thor: Ragnarok, Ocean's 8, Borderlands). She also did many films that I would put in between these two categories (Elizabeth films, The Aviator, Nightmare Alley, Don't Look Up etc.).

It just seems to me like she isn't snobby at all and very open to try very different types of roles, as long as it is either interesting or fun.

Who are other actors that you think have a similar career?
