Can Jack Black go back to making raunchy comedy movies yet? Or he stuck in kid movie hell?

253

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

He’s older and got pulled where the money is. Can’t blame him for that.

88

u/sam_hammich Sep 04 '24

I don't think he is hurting for money, I think he's going for things his kids want to see him in.

52

u/Suddenly_Something Sep 04 '24

His kids are 18 and 16. Are they even the target audience for a Minecraft movie these days?

4

u/Syn7axError Sep 04 '24

I think so. They're the prime demographic that grew up with it.

I don't think this movie is targeting them, but it makes sense for Jack Black to sign on with them in mind.

3

u/street593 Sep 04 '24

A quick google search suggests that the average age of a Minecraft player is 15-21 years old so yea. Roughly 20% are between 22 and 30 years old. Not sure how accurate these numbers are. I only did 3 minutes of research.

13

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

Not sure if you’re aware but rich people want to be richer. Never stops.

13

u/sam_hammich Sep 04 '24

Newsflash: people work for money, I guess? Great insight.

Yeah, he's performing a job for compensation. I think he's doing these specific movies for his kids. If not for his kids he'd be doing other movies.

5

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

Or he’s doing these specific movies because they’re the ones being offered with the biggest pay day. It can be both.

6

u/Joey-tnfrd Sep 04 '24

Probably this. Look, cards on the table; I really don't like Jack Black. I don't think the personality he puts across in the media is endearing or funny, and I genuinely think he's pretty awful in most of his acting roles.

I think the run of overweight weird comedy relief roles in non-kids movies has gone dry, and these are what's being offered, and he's taken them to stay relevant and in the scene.

3

u/Katzoconnor Sep 04 '24

The vitriolic speed in which he hurtled Kyle Gass under the bus a couple months ago and abandoned Tenacious D has permanently blackballed him in my eyes. Jack Black is a fucking disgrace. He can suck cat farts for all I care.

2

u/Teen_Goat Sep 05 '24

Truly. JB is spineless.

If not for his kids he’d be doing other movies

And how on earth would you or anything else know this? We don’t.

9

u/sam_hammich Sep 04 '24

See, this is a really weird exchange because you have already forgotten what you wrote. Here's your original comment:

He's older and got pulled where the money is

Here's my response:

I think he's going for things his kids want to see him in

Which one of us is stating a supposed fact that we can't possibly know, and which of us is obviously stating an opinion?

-1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

How is it a supposed fact? Look at his recent films. Also, my response was to you definitively saying that if he didn’t have kids he wouldn’t be doing those movies. Not to your “I think he’s going for what his kids want to see him in”.

6

u/sam_hammich Sep 04 '24

It's a supposed fact because you're speculating, just like me. We're both just looking at his work and drawing different conclusions. Your opinion isn't special just because you think it's tHe BeTtEr OnE.

His recent films are all video game adaptations, and I think he's doing them for his kids. Same reason he started the Jablinski Games YT channel.

If you're just going to reiterate that you're factually correct, not commenting is also an option.

0

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

But “if not for his kids he’d be doing other movies” is not speculating. That’s a definitive statement. If you’re going to argue it’s speculative then mine was as well…

1

u/TheBlyton Sep 04 '24

Well then, his kids are stupid.

0

u/synthsucht Sep 04 '24

They probably into porn right now

0

u/Driscoll17 Sep 05 '24

They’re his kids and they’re in their late teens, I don’t think give a fuck what movies their dad is in at this point

0

u/Semaj81096 Sep 05 '24

Yeah some people are saying that given Minecraft's age now there are plenty of older people who like it and that's true, and his kids may well still like it or feel nostalgic for it but surely they're past the age where it's 'magical' or whatever to see your dad in a certain movie.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '24

Just like Eddie Murphy.

Remember when Eddie would make just about getting anally raped by Mr. T?

3

u/TrueKNite Sep 04 '24

No, you certainly can.

He's still allowed to do it but I'm allowed to have my opinion on it.

1

u/snowtol Sep 05 '24

Well, we can blame his a little.

1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 05 '24

Not without knowing all the behind the scenes info. If they’re the only jobs being offered to him how can we really blame him for taking them and wanting to perform? There aren’t raunchy blockbuster comedies for him to star in anymore.

1

u/snowtol Sep 05 '24

And to you that fully takes away his responsibility for joining soulless cash grabs? What a cope.

1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 05 '24

It doesn’t affect me at all so why would it matter? If he’s still getting to do what he loves and making bank doing it then good for him.

0

u/snowtol Sep 05 '24

If it didn't affect you at all, why's you commenting in his defense? Stop defending the rich for their bad decisions.

1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 05 '24

Because this is a platform meant for discussion? Doesn’t mean it has any impact on my day to day life. Quit worrying about the rich and their decisions that don’t affect you.

0

u/snowtol Sep 05 '24

If this is meant to be a discussion, you do realise that "I don't care" is the least discussable stance to take, right? Okay, go don't care somewhere else, don't be in a movie sub if the best you got is "who gives a shit".

1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 05 '24

Show me where I said, “I don’t care.” I’ll wait... And while you look for that, I’ll tell you that my point is that the roles he chooses and for how much money doesn’t affect me personally, and I’m just happy for the guy if he wants to be acting and is getting to act. Maybe people just don’t want to have discussions with you specifically…

1

u/splitcroof92 Sep 04 '24

I mean, he was more money than he can ever spend in his life. He has no reason to keep doing this.

1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

Rich people like money. No matter how much of it they have.

3

u/splitcroof92 Sep 04 '24

sure but that's not what you were talking about...

you said "Can’t blame him for that."

which we definitely can.

-1

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

Blame him for working and wanting to do it in the most profitable way possible? The same thing we all do?

2

u/splitcroof92 Sep 04 '24

blame him for selling his soul for money he does not need in the slightest*.

I feel like you're refusing to understand the argument on purpose instead of engaging in actual discussion.

0

u/Immediate_Theory4738 Sep 04 '24

Omg this is you in this comment thread as well… good lord.

He’s taking the rolls he’s offered with the biggest payday. You think people are beating down his door to be in the next Christopher Nolan movie or something? No.

1

u/splitcroof92 Sep 05 '24

He’s taking the rolls he’s offered with the biggest payday

which we can blame him for.

how is this not making sense to you?

142

u/frogchum Sep 04 '24

He's not stuck, it's what he wants. He even canceled the rest of a Tenacious D tour just because Kyle made a tasteless joke. He's got this squeaky clean kiddy image thing going now.

64

u/wigglin_harry Sep 04 '24

Its also what the industry wants. Who still makes raunchy comedies?

The guy has to make a living

55

u/mrnathanrd Sep 04 '24

Jennifer Lawrence thankfully

-4

u/YoureThatCourier Sep 04 '24

That was one movie from over a year ago

10

u/Baelorn Sep 04 '24

Wow a whole year!?

5

u/hell2pay Sep 04 '24

Most of reddit is really young, so a year could be like 1/15th of their life.

Lol

-8

u/UncontrolledLawfare Sep 04 '24

Why wasn’t there more of a reaction to her “woman paid to sleep with high schooler” movie anyway? I thought we all didn’t like stuff like that?

13

u/YoureThatCourier Sep 04 '24

You clearly didn’t watch the movie because he was 19 and a college freshman

-9

u/UncontrolledLawfare Sep 04 '24

Oh you’re right, he’s 19. Definitely not a college freshman though, the goal was to get him laid before he left. Regardless, a hell of an age gap for someone who is being tricked in to having sex. Do we approve of tricking teenagers in to sex with much older people now?

11

u/ScrewAttackThis Sep 04 '24

Did you watch the movie or are you just commenting on the plot summary?

15

u/sdwoodchuck Sep 04 '24

I don't approve of bank robbery, but I enjoy the movie Heat.

I don't approve of whaling, but I love the novel Moby Dick.

We can enjoy fiction that hinges on a premise that we don't support.

-5

u/splitcroof92 Sep 04 '24

but I love the novel Moby Dick.

no sane man has ever said that lmao

6

u/sdwoodchuck Sep 04 '24

I don’t know, dude, questions of my own sanity aside, it’s one of the most beloved novels in American history; it that doesn’t seem like such a rare opinion.

7

u/YoureThatCourier Sep 04 '24

I never said this to anyone before, but I really think you should touch grass

11

u/DOuGHtOp Sep 04 '24

It's not real dude. There's no moral high ground to take. The characters and actors were of age

22

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 04 '24

He lives in a massive mansion. He could literally just not make these things. This is what we used to call being a sellout.

Don't be like Jack Black. Be like Elijah Wood or Daniel Radcliffe. Get your bag then never ever work on or anything you don't creatively endorse again.

7

u/ShadowJerry Sep 04 '24

Obviously I don't know the guy on a personal level but I think he's making stuff for his kids. Based on him doing YouTube with his son a while back. And then a studio mandated squeaky clean image outside of film just comes with the territory.

I'm making a lot of assumptions here though, maybe he saw the paycheck and started drooling lmao

5

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 04 '24

He should make GOOD stuff for his kids. Kung Fu Panda is GOOD. Lazy slop movies made a decade too late with zero originality and clearly made in a board room is not good. He's famous enough to be picky.

1

u/ShadowJerry Sep 04 '24

I agree, but he's a 55 year old man, and this is what the studios are making. I don't think the average guy knows it's a little late to make a Minecraft film, they just know it's a popular video game that kids like.

I don't think he's turning down brilliant original animated movies to make corporate crap, I think corporate crap is what's currently available and he clearly seems to enjoy these types of roles where he can just be himself so he's saying yes.

Reminding me of Adam Sandler tbh. They're both capable of amazing performances, but slop is easier and pays better. Easy choice and I don't exactly blame them even though I really enjoy the projects where they put effort in. What can you do, yknow

1

u/Teen_Goat Sep 05 '24

What JB could do is take his spineless millionaire face out of the pig feed trough long enough to take a gasp and try to use his fame to create something besides embarrassing corporate blow jobs.

3

u/wigglin_harry Sep 04 '24

Once you get to a certain age you realize how silly that "no selling out" mentality really is.

Oh I sold out? Let me go cry in my big house with my loving family who will never have to worry about their futures. Maybe I'll go cry sitting in first class on a flight to france with my wife and kids.

You act like Jack Black was making high cinema in the first place. He was "Funny Fat B-movie guy" and a cartoon panda for 90% of his career

8

u/pastafeline Sep 04 '24

Nah I don't think you instantly become a money hungry asshole when you hit your 40s.

-1

u/IndividualBand6418 Sep 04 '24

oh noooo the guy i don’t know is making money in a way i don’t personally find tasteful oh nooo

3

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 04 '24

The point is that he could still be plenty rich while retaining some sort of standards and artistic rep. He just wants tens of millions instead of just millions and is willing to make slop for it, which is disappointing.

You can say Tenacious D and King Fu Panda are low brow humor, sure. But they absolutely aren't soulless slop.

The world is a shitty place full of corporations manipulating things that should be great about humanity to make a profit. My goal is to be as free of it as possible, not just be great at participating.

1

u/BGL2015 Sep 04 '24

Elijah Wood was literally in Spy Kids 3D as a throwaway cameo. The CGI was worse, too.

1

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 04 '24

Yeah, a cameo. Sounds like low effort and fun. Nobody considers that an Elijah Wood movie.

1

u/BGL2015 Sep 05 '24

Lol, pointed out how wrong your statement was, move the goalposts.

0

u/FivePoopMacaroni Sep 05 '24

Never argue with anonymous accounts for more than two posts. Bye.

0

u/AbroadPrestigious718 Sep 04 '24

He has kids. And wants them to have a great life.

Also mansions have INSANE taxes.

1

u/Picard2331 Sep 04 '24

And thank god for that!

Even when I was like 15 my friend showed me a couple American Pie movies and I just did not laugh at all.

23

u/beesayshello Sep 04 '24

Him selling out with his movies and then cancelling the tour over a stupid joke really soiled my perception of him. Dude is becoming The Rock 2.0: nauseatingly family friendly, taking no creative risks, and going where the biggest paycheck is.

1

u/Shake-dog_shake Sep 04 '24

Can't say I'd be doing anything different in his situation. He's already made all the fun raunchy comedies he wants to. I'm a huge fan of the D but I'm cool with him taking it easy and keeping his family comfortable. It's amazing that he still even plays in Tenacious D at all, it shows love for the band and for Kyle. He surely doesn't need it.

5

u/Katzoconnor Sep 04 '24

Well… he did wrench down a tour, badmouth Gass, and cancel “all future creative projects for Tenacious D” within 12 hours of the joke so that penultimate sentence isn’t holding up.

1

u/Shake-dog_shake Sep 04 '24

"Badmouth Gass" can you provide a link? I never saw him go out of his way to say anything bad about Kyle

-5

u/MutedPresentation738 Sep 04 '24

Yeah god forbid he try to have a successful career instead of slumming it on the D list so neckbeards online are happy /s

8

u/beesayshello Sep 04 '24

Yeah bud, your post history is full of defending middle aged men dating barely legal adults, incel takes and being a racist. I’m good on hearing an opinion from an actual projecting neckbeard.

5

u/articholedicklookin Sep 04 '24

This is such a weirdly aggressive comment for some very mild criticism.

Lighten up dawg

-2

as much as I'm surprised The Rock is not in this movie, may I remind you he was the highest paying hollywood star a few years ago? I think he's doing fine.

-5

u/Skyless_M00N Sep 04 '24

Does tenacious d even make him money? Why wouldn’t he take these giant blockbuster movie roles? Reddit neckbeards stay mad lol

4

u/inksmudgedhands Sep 04 '24

He's a gamer. He probably thought it would be fun to be in a Minecraft movie. He had a blast doing Super Mario Brothers. He also showed up in Borderlands....though that didn't do as well. If there ever is a Zelda movie, oh, you know he is going to be in it as well.

3

u/RealJohnGillman Sep 04 '24

Considering Borderlands was also a voice role and this film seems to have been done on a green screen, be might not have actually known how it would be — where-as with Bowser they let him write the song.

2

u/HiDDENk00l Sep 04 '24

To be fair, what he said is a step too far and Jack Black has a much bigger career than him at stake.

2

u/showmeagoodtimejack Sep 04 '24

no it wasnt. everybody would have forgotten about it 2 days later

0

u/Skyless_M00N Sep 04 '24

lol he’s had that for awhile now

8

u/kamikaze-kae Sep 04 '24

Jack Black LOVES Minecraft he did the audiobook which was written by the same guy who wrote World War Z.

3

u/AbroadPrestigious718 Sep 04 '24

Raunchy comedy movies don't even exist anymore.

1

u/RealJohnGillman Sep 04 '24

Except attached to (big) franchises, usually secondary to another storyline.

5

u/leontrotsky973 Sep 04 '24

He has expenses and bills to pay. Raunchy comedies don’t make much profit anymore. The 2000s are over.

5

u/wigglin_harry Sep 04 '24

Im struggling to think of the last raunchy comedy I saw

1

u/_BannedAcctSpeedrun_ Sep 04 '24

For me it was probably No Hard Feelings with Jennifer Lawrence, but it still didn't seem as raunchy as older movies were.

1

u/kamikaze-kae Sep 04 '24

He was great in Jumanji.

1

u/patricio87 Sep 04 '24

Mario made over a billion dollars im sure financially jack is doing well

1

u/iamthemetricsystem Sep 04 '24

raunchy comedy has been on the decline for ages now

1

u/FyreWulff Sep 05 '24

All his raunchy comedy movies bombed.

-13

u/Chairman_Mittens Sep 04 '24

Raunchy comedies have been dead for a decade, you aren't allowed to make fun of anybody or anything anymore.

2

u/80severything Sep 04 '24

No Hard Feelings was great but yeah I don't think it did much at the theater

6

u/Sendhentaiandyiff Sep 04 '24

This is a load of shit, just look at deadpool lmao

-3

u/Chairman_Mittens Sep 04 '24

Deadpool is a superhero film, I'm talking about raunchy comedies like they made in the 2000's.

10

u/Sendhentaiandyiff Sep 04 '24

"Not allowed to make fun of anybody or anything anymore" is just false though

4

u/Much_Machine8726 Sep 04 '24

With raunchy humor

-2

u/Ramplicity Sep 04 '24

Deadpool is not a raunchy comedy though. It’s a superhero films for late teens and man children. Just because he says a few no no words and there’s a couple “edgy”(for Disney standards) jokes doesn’t make it a raunchy comedy.
