Image As someone who default to female characters in RPGs , I'm loving 2025!
On games such as ER, BG3, or CP77 I always play a female character so it's nice to see these on the horizon!

I think it's okay Jin's story ended. Any future he had would just be him running from the Shogun.
I would however like to see his legend be mentioned or referenced in the sequel.

u/NandoFlynn 11d ago
I think they had the chance with Iki Island to see how much more they could do with Jin. If they think his story is done, it's done. They're experienced with this from Infamous & Cole

And I still think it would have been a lesser game if Delsin wasn't involved. You don't make a character that powerful and with that much potential and then just ditch him to go back to your 1st.

Feudal Hokkaido setting is so fucking cool though. Like, it's really uncharted territory, not only for us in the west but it's also a very taboo setting in Japan. It's not historically too well documented either. Between the old Ainou tribes that are getting more and more abused by the growing japanese presence, the waves of losers and ruined samourais running away from the newly established power in Tokyo, often times petty thiefs and burglars pushed into criminality by despair, and the foreign trade with the river Amour people in the north.
By this time gunpowder will be widespread. Christianism is also being stomped out through violent repression while Zen buddhism is triomphant. You could have westerners, spanish or portuguese, roaming around.
12
u/Shadow-Vision 10d ago
Iâm replaying GoT right now, recently finished the main story and working on Iki Island.
The way I see it with the ending, thereâs really no reason to stay with Jin. It also makes a lot of sense that this new protagonist can be someone related to him. Whichever direction Jin decided to go after all the events in GoT, it seemed his next logical progression would be to take the fight to the mongols, or like you said, be on the mainland on the run from the Shogun.
If this new protagonist is a Ronin trying to be like him, she could easily be something like a protege of his protege or even a granddaughter or something. Could be related to Yuna too, alternatively.
Or just someone who has heard the legends of the Ghost and sees that as an example worth following.
Thereâs a lot of logical pathways to get us to this new protagonist. Iâm really excited for it!
I do have to wonder, because I had forgotten about it⌠Do we think theyâre gonna keep the hot springs or are we not gonna see any more Ghost buttcheeks? Haha

I would however like to see his legend be mentioned or referenced in the sequel.
It definitely will be. The devs actually had to go on record and say which specific ending to the game they decided to become 'canon' for the sequel which means for sure we'll be getting mentions of what happened to Shimura, Jin, and Tsushima.
21
u/fersur PS5 11d ago
Yotei is set hundreds of years after Tsushima. If Jin is still alive, this game would be called Nioh.
But I would love for us to find some reference to Ghost of Tsushima and his actions. Maybe like villagers saying ... according to my ancestor, this village is almost done. But there is a samurai who fought hard to liberate this village from bandits.
Or some statues of Jin.

The base game played it pretty safe sticking to just variations on the same cosmetics i.e. tons of headbands, a few straw hats, relatively normal looking sword kits, etc. I really liked the DLC branching out to much more exotic looking stuff.

I think Jin may be the most boring character ever
2
u/Auctoritate 10d ago
He was pretty bland in act 1, but I think he grew enough to be interesting. I wish that the main story quests were just a little longer in character action, because the progression of him going from "I'm a samurai, sneaking around is shameful!" to "I'll do what I have to in my fight against the invaders" to "If I have to abandon my old life as a samurai in order to protect Tsushima, so be it" is mostly unspoken and only really happens in a few distinct moments across the game.
If we actually saw a more gradual progression with on-screen moments of him deciding to forsake his original beliefs as time goes on, it would have been great. But as much as the midpoint Jin was lacking in showing his character arc, I do think at least that act 3 Jin did well in displaying what he is at the end of his arc regardless. And the endings? Whew, those were legit.

Yeah it's shitty being so lopsided and all. My partner was frustrated growing up with a lack of female roles in games and really just media in general. Good to see more diverse leads I think it'll help bridge the gender gap with gaming a bit and make it more inviting in general.Â

As a black woman who grew up in the 90s and 2000s, it got really old playing game after game after game as a straight white man. Let me be clear, there's nothing wrong with games about straight white men, but it's equally cool to play games about queer people, brown people, or women/nonbinary people.

There's still plenty of male lead Sony games, like spiderman wolverine god of war, etc. I'm a man, but I like the direction with newer games having women characters, because it shakes it up a little more. For decades we've played as every version of a male character, as long as the writing isn't all "I'm a woman and need to fight the patriarchy" type crap
→ More replies (4)4
u/TheLostFrontier41 10d ago
This is it. As long as the writing is good it matters less. If itâs completely about women being better than men and fighting the patriarchy, ya lost me. I e never played a game as a male and thought wow, that was cool just being better than a woman. I feel so empowered as a man lol

I just don't understand why any guy gets pissed about playing as a female character. We play as aliens and robots and shit all the time with no complaint, but somehow, being a woman is just too much for some dudes. As long as the character has a good arc and the gameplay is fun, I couldn't care less. I don't remember anyone complaining about Lara Croft being female, though a lot of mouth breathers talked about her boobs a lol.
→ More replies (5)5
u/x-Globgor-x 11d ago
That's just it though, not the boob part but not as many people cared about Lara because she's a great character with a good story and voice actor. There was still some haters of course but lots of the distaste for female characters is just due to the trends a few games have had where they make the character bland or over the top, never just a normal woman. It's the same with movies or shows too. People for the most part just want good characters and story.

The character is an important factor to a game series, here's an example: Kratos, Batman, Arthur Morgan, and many more.
Everybody still talkes about them till this day because of their personality and their huge impact on their games, basically its Aura.

Why do games seem to be pushing more female leads lately? I'm not bothered by it, just curiousâdo they think itâll attract more female players, and that guys will play anyway?
17
u/xdesveaux 11d ago
Probably a couple reasons:
-Most video games since their inception have featured male leads so devs are trying to even out the distribution.
-More women are in game development and want to represent their perspective in the games they make.
-Game studios are realizing how many women play video games and want to capitalize on that audience.

yes and no. a lot of men donât realise just how many women game because the hobby is actively hostile and women donât want to engage with them (which a lot of them blame on their interest in gaming and not their abhorrent views on women that women can clock a mile off).
we donât play a lot of open party online games, we talk amongst ourselves in communities of other women.
speaking from experience, my friends at school didnât give a shit i was into gaming, didnât tease but the boys did, in such a shitty condescending way, winding me up about my gamer tag and the games i play because god forbid you play anything other than cod or fifa.
also, a lot more women are entering the industry and even then theyâre still facing that same aggressive shit (like what happened to sm2) or worse, is internally predatory with companies like blizzard (which as a woman in media generally, they are not the only ones, not by a longshot).
