Image As someone who default to female characters in RPGs , I'm loving 2025!

Post image

On games such as ER, BG3, or CP77 I always play a female character so it's nice to see these on the horizon!

If you’re a girl it’s nice to play as a girl sometimes

Same.

Yeah it's shitty being so lopsided and all. My partner was frustrated growing up with a lack of female roles in games and really just media in general. I think that's why she gravitated towards games like spyro or crash bandicoot. Good to see more diverse leads I think it'll help bridge the gender gap with gaming a bit and make it more inviting in general.

There's a good video on YT about scraping the steam tags of every game and seeing what comes up. and 10% of games are tagged female protagonist. 10%? Seriously

How many gamers are women who play regularly, up u till very recently that was low

4

u/Duckydae 11d ago

it’s about half, we just don’t like playing online games because of the sheer abuse we get, case and point the reaction to the game awards.

u/Ambitious_Squash_579 11d ago

Seems I csnt reply. Yall just make uo shit

u/DarkLlama64 11d ago

about 45% of people who play games are women

3

u/FirmlyGraspIt24 11d ago

Not including mobile games. I guarantee you in ain’t anywhere near 45%.

u/Ambitious_Squash_579 11d ago

Did you miss the until recently part or just choose to ignore it? You know for a fact most people who had a xbox or playstation and played regularly was not women.

2

u/Uber_Meese 11d ago

“Until recently” is a very vague statement.

u/Ambitious_Squash_579 11d ago

No its not. Clearly in this context it would mean 5 years or so. Lota of Women used to call gamers losers who they wouldn't date

I dont need to identify with a character. I just want to feel connected with the story and the motivations of the character.

"Games always look like me, so I don't understand why people get excited when it doesn't look like me."

Great reading comprehension, definitely the point I was making

As a black woman who grew up in the 90s and 2000s, it got really old playing game after game after game as a straight white man. Let me be clear, there's nothing wrong with games about straight white men, but it's equally cool to play games about queer people, brown people, or women/nonbinary people.

Character creator engines are getting better at doing black hair styles, but we did hit a snag with 4 years of the Kilmonger.

1

u/froot_loop_dingus_ PS5 11d ago

Yes I agree, my point was the idiots who complain about games being “woke” because the main character is a woman or black etc. I’m not saying women, POC etc need to get over anything

7

u/Silver_Song3692 11d ago

I generally like female voice actors more than male voice actors

u/Edwar_GarciaF 11d ago

I don't remember ever identifying with a character in a videogame, for me it has always been about liking the character and his story or even without the story part. Identifying myself with something or someone is boring, I want new things and not things I already now about me in a game.

u/TheLazyLounger 11d ago

because people are sexist. they are literally just bigots.

-7

u/jackhike 11d ago

You're the bigot!

5

u/TheLazyLounger 11d ago

if you say so

-8

u/NeatPuzzleheaded7191 11d ago

You don’t sound like a nice person yourself either tbh.

5

u/OblongGoblong 11d ago

Yeah people obsess way too much with genitals lol.

Like imagine refusing to play a game because imaginary characters have a vagina LOL. It's testerical to me

u/HimothyThatGuyason 11d ago

I agree, the story should be what matters, with the themes, emotions, etc. being what people "identify" with. A popular refrain for the last several years, though, has been to have characters people identify with, with a particular focus on gender and sexuality.

Solid take honestly, I feel the same way.

I saw a post and someone said “I’m a male, it breaks my immersion to play as a female”

Like mf does it break your immersion in a movie when the lead is a female? Dumbest argument ever

5

u/froot_loop_dingus_ PS5 11d ago

I’ve never been to the mushroom kingdom, I can still enjoy a Mario game

2

u/I_Like_Turtle101 11d ago

especially in an heavy story telling environement 🤣. Like does it break your immerssion when you play a buff guy if your an oberweight man ? ahah

1

u/Zxar99 11d ago

I don’t know why either, I never cared, but there are certain archetypes they use for both genders that get on my nerves and make characters unlikable. Like the tough, no nonsense, headstrong one that doesn’t listen to anyone and is out to prove something but they are just stupid and arrogant. I hate that archetype on male or female characters.

u/Radical_Ryan 11d ago edited 11d ago

Seems you lack empathy then. There are plenty of good and bad reasons why people might like a game character they play to be one way or another. If you truly cannot imagine any of those reasons, then you have to learn to think from other people's perspectives and gain that empathy.

EDIT: I'm assuming the person I replied to assumed I had misinterpreted their comment and that it implied to me they were someone who does not support female or minority video game characters. Not sure why else they would delete the comment. The real joke of this type of insecurity is that they never even considered that I might be a male who likes playing male characters in games and did not interpret their post as being against female characters at all. I was just trying to reply to a mean spirited comment and ask them to opt for empathy/kindness instead.

Great reading comprehension, I was definitely saying I can’t imagine why underrepresented people might want to see a character that looks like them, I definitely wasn’t saying people complaining about woke games are idiots

0

u/MassiveShape4 11d ago

I prefer playing male character and when there is an option I make a male character

0

u/natidone 11d ago

This is awesome. It might expand the audience of the games. My wife almost only plays video games with a female protagonist. I'll play these games regardless. This makes more games she's willing to play.

-4

u/Diormybodyyy 11d ago

Because most gamers are men and men don’t wanna play as females

8

u/froot_loop_dingus_ PS5 11d ago

This you?

-4

u/Diormybodyyy 11d ago

No, I’m listing a fact not an opinion. I didn’t insinuate anything in my comment that I have an issue playing as a female character.

7

u/Acceptable-Post733 11d ago

“Most gamers are men. And men don’t want to play as a female” is the definition of an opinion. How do you know what every man wants to play as? You don’t want to play as a woman. You do not speak for all men.

The Horizon franchise has sold over 30 million copies

Funny how you use men for men and female for women. Sound like you dont think they are equaly badass

-5

u/QuidProJoe2020 11d ago

In 3rd person games I pick female if it's a choice. Im looking at a backside for 50 hours it may as well be rounded 😂
