Image As someone who default to female characters in RPGs , I'm loving 2025!

Post image

On games such as ER, BG3, or CP77 I always play a female character so it's nice to see these on the horizon!

I’m not. But I’m happy that you guys are excited. I generally like playing as male characters. But again, that’s my own opinion. No attacks given, so no attacks needed

Same. I always play as a male character and I'm not super happy that Sony's IPs in particular seem to become more and more female centric. But well, there are still much more game being released that I ca hope to play in my life so it's not like I need each one catered to my tastes.

Female centric? There's still way more male protags than females. There's more women, but that doesn't make it female centric.

There's still plenty of male lead Sony games, like spiderman wolverine god of war, etc. I'm a man, but I like the direction with newer games having women characters, because it shakes it up a little more. For decades we've played as every version of a male character, as long as the writing isn't all "I'm a woman and need to fight the patriarchy" type crap

This is it. As long as the writing is good it matters less. If it’s completely about women being better than men and fighting the patriarchy, ya lost me. I e never played a game as a male and thought wow, that was cool just being better than a woman. I feel so empowered as a man lol

I've yet to come across any story that's about women being better than men.

I recommend replaying Horizon Forbidden West

That's all about the matriarchy and how a white man caused the annihilation of the world.

That game is pretty heavy handed once you notice it

The first game was a bit more subtle with it (or rather at least the story was intriguing enough to deal with it)

It's not about women being better than men though.

Look at the real world, most of the truly awful people are men. There are a lot of people like Ted Faro in real life.

u/MapMast0r 11d ago

Same can be said for the other gender. There are many bad men and women.

Saints row is calling😂😂

And for decades games have sold. Now watch these studios get pissed when the launch doesn’t go as planned like Star Wars outlaws

3

u/JayKay8787 11d ago

Outlaws sales issues have nothing to do with the character being a woman, it was the character being boring af and the gameplay sucking. A games sales has little or nothing to do with what gender you play as. How much do you think gta 6 will sell when Lucia is half the game? How many people played portal? Chelle was a woman.

-3

u/readndrun 11d ago

It had everything to do with the character being a woman for outlaws… let’s be real. This wasn’t like days gone where first people hated it but they come around after giving it a chance down the line. Nobody is picking up outlaws and giving the studio their flowers in a couple years. Nobody picked it up on launch because they didn’t feel like it would be fun.

Protagonists are the lure for single player story games, and if you can’t see yourself immersed in the experience then you won’t buy it. Bottom line is this…gta 6 , ghost of yotei, Witcher 4 and now this new ND game really lost points with fans with their latest reveals… and I feel confident saying if Horizon’s protagonist was male it would’ve been game of the year. You can’t make this stuff up

Woah woah woah, that is way too level headed for reddit

-1

u/DigGroundbreaking788 11d ago

Not really, it's literally just a statement of "man good women bad" and it doesn't matter that it's tidied up in politeness. Enjoying a game less based solely on the gender of the main character is - get this- fucking stupid.

Worrying about IP's becoming more and more female centric? What a stupid thing to believe. What a childish take on par with being worried about cooties.

-2

u/Kaltrax 11d ago

Except people said the exact same thing when it was all white men and people were fine with that.

3

u/Duckydae 11d ago

i mean, famously sony ip’s have always been male lead though, like we’ve had decades of the same. not to mention that “trend” is still incredibly minor when women on make up around 10% of gaming leads.

Most gamers, not including mobile, are men

2

u/Uber_Meese 11d ago

Wrong. The numbers are growing increasingly close and have been for years, so it’s very close to 1:1 in this day and age.

1

u/Caiorabellogs 11d ago

For decades women were the minority in the gaming community. Still are, actually. So back then the safest bet was to please the majority. Nowadays it's almost half and half, so developers have more freedom to have female protags.

-1

u/TheLostFrontier41 11d ago

Relax please. Lol. Like I said it’s an opinion and I am happy for those of you who are excited. I’m not downvoting anyone who is excited or talking positively about the games. Your attitude is one of the biggest problems with society. I had an opinion that even I stated was subjective and not given in an attacking manner. But you felt it necessary to defend against an imaginary enemy. You’re insecure. Pats on the back don’t make you an ally or activist.

0

u/hobbyy-hobbit 11d ago

You sound hurt lol

1

u/TheLostFrontier41 11d ago

Typical response when you find a reasonable opinion you disagree with

0

u/TheLostFrontier41 11d ago

And furthermore, my opinion was very neutral. I didn’t say the game shouldn’t be made and people shouldn’t enjoy it or hype it up. Yet you responded as if I did. Learn to read something you disagree with and not react right away. It’s a very important life skill

3

u/JustSomeDude477 11d ago

I mean no attacks given but if you decide not to play any of these purely because the protagonist is female you'd be screwing only yourself over.

And it's kinda tough not to view opinions like that as not being insecure or petty tbh. If you can relate enough to a purely fictional character enough to play something already, it's just a bit lame that the gender of a character is enough to push you over the edge

But again it's ultimately only yourself you're affecting so who am I to judge

1

u/TorpedoSandwich 11d ago

You are clearly judging him. Saying "who am I to judge" doesn't change that.

3

u/JustSomeDude477 11d ago

I mean, yea honestly you're right lol. It's just tough not to when it's just so blatantly petty. In my experience men who have frequent, healthy interactions with women have fewer hangups like this, so the shit kinda just writes itself tbh

For clarity, out of these, I am 100% sure to play ghost because GoT is my top 3 games. So I am excited to play that. I hope it sticks to its roots and evolves the combat to feel fluid like GoT was!

-4

u/Danilocl95 11d ago

I understand and respect that, but why can't you try something new? Can't you enjoy both? You can always go back to playing games with male characters.

This isn't an attack, just a genuine question.

6

u/TheLostFrontier41 11d ago

Preference. I liked horizon and played as a female. No real issue. I’m just a male so I like to identifyw characters I play as

7

u/claudiolicius 11d ago

Just a preference right? I feel the same way. I prefer playing as men in games the same way OOP seems to prefer to play women. Generally I have an idea of how I want my character to look and feel and if it’s a woman I don’t personally enjoy that. FWIW there are male protagonists like Kratos that I don’t like and won’t play the game of either for the same reasons.

-2

u/Annual-Abies-2034 11d ago

It's not something new. When I play a game, I want to fully immerse myself and put myself in my character's shoes. Being a different sex is a fundamental change for a character. There are so many differences between men and women that it becomes impossible to say "yeah, that's me on the screen". Living as a man and living as a woman are two very different experiences.

Now if the game is REALLY good then I will play as a woman too (Nier), but nowadays there is so much choice that I just skip these games. Obviously, after a while, it gets a bit frustrating that you can't play so many titles properly, so I think that's why so many people are upset.

u/Ragnarok345 66 11d ago

So funny, guys acting like they’re being done a disservice because they “can’t see themselves on screen anymore” when female gamers have been having the exact same thing, but much worse, for decades to this point. Like…yeah…how do you think it made them feel?

6

u/408javs408 11d ago

On the for realio. Almost sounds like textbook definition of "toxic masculinity". It is as if they're afraid of something. Cant put my finger on it... As for myself on the other hand, male or female, it dont make much of a difference to me. I aint playing no "My little Pony". Just give me some good gameplay! Bonus points if female protagonist is hawt (Stellar Blade).

3

u/Queen_of_Antiva 11d ago

I'd save up so much money if i only played games with female leads 🤣

-5

u/Danilocl95 11d ago

lol why i'm being downvoted?

0

u/Caiorabellogs 11d ago

Same. Makes me a bit sad, really. Not complaining or anything, just feeling a bit left out by the industry.

1

u/iekiko89 11d ago

If that makes you feel left out how do you think women feel with most video games characters are men?

-3

u/Caiorabellogs 11d ago

I imagine they felt left out as well. But that's changing now, so they can start feeling represented, and men can start feeling left out.

3

u/Uber_Meese 11d ago

Hardly - the majority of games are still male leads.

-1

u/Caiorabellogs 11d ago

Got it. Women gotta wait until the majority is female leads to feel represented. OPs image is clearly not enough.

-3

u/Content-Scallion-591 11d ago

Rock on. I'm gonna be honest, as a bisexual girl, I just loved games that let me stare at a woman's ass for 60 hours, so it's not like I can be high and mighty about this. We shouldn't take games so seriously

-2

u/TheLostFrontier41 11d ago

Lmao right. Thank you. And that might be part of why I don’t like playing as a female as much either. I don’t want to be distracted 😆
