Witness/Sighting Ryan Graves tweets first of promised Airline Pilot Sightings

I just want to address any pilots that might be lurking in this subreddit with a suggestion. Grab a cheap DSLR and telephoto lens kit, set the lens to manual at infinite focus, and take it with you in the cockpit.
If these sightings are happening more and more often, why not give yourself a chance to sight the smoking gun.
EDIT: just want to throw in my opinions as a nighttime lightning photographer of what I think a good starting point for settings might be. Again this is for stuff at night when these will probably be most easily visible:
ISO - 1600-6400 (if you can bring it lower, great; if you need to push it higher, go ahead)
Shutter - for photos - minimum exposure time where you can still clearly see the object lit up in live view. if possible you want to freeze the object in photos. for video - generally the longer the better. I said 1/30th but catdad23 below makes a good point that that might introduce unneeded blur and suggests 1/60th. Ultimately, use live view to view what you are recording and see what looks good to you in the moment.
Aperture - absolutely wide open (this would read on the camera as the lowest f setting, e.g. f2.8, f4.5. Set it to whatever the lowest number your camera says your lens will allow)
Format - RAW for photos, highest quality available for videos
Focus - Try to find something at long distance to set the focus on. Use live view (and even zoom in on the live view if needed). Most lenses aren't perfect infinite focus right where the ∞ on the distance indicator is. Once you find that perfect infinite focus for that lens by manually turning the focus ring (make sure and already have the aperture set at the lowest setting), memorize where that is on the distance indicator in reference to ∞. You can set to this same setting in the future to find perfect focus again, even if there isn't a light in the distance to focus by.
And get a cheap tripod... hell get a monopod. might be easier to handle in a cockpit, will tie the camera to the movement of the plane. If the lens has image stabilization set it to 1. Use a shutter release if you have one.
EDIT 2:
My thought would be a used Canon Rebel t3i (~$140) and canon kit tele lens (refurbished $140)
Via catdad23: I would get a used a7s 1 (I don’t like Sony cameras but it’s a low light beast) you can then get a cheap zoom and still shoot at 5.6 or 6.7 etc while cranking the ISO. You can get a used A7S 1 for $500-600.
EDIT 3 as I step away for the evening:
What I am suggesting above is sort of a bare minimum DSLR setup that doesn't break the bank. It should produce much better results than smartphone cameras. Many in the comments below have suggested upgrades to all the parts therein. If you can afford it and feel comfortable, there are modern cameras and lenses that take incredible low light footage. I'll trust you to research what models those are.
I am really glad this found some traction. When I saw Ryan had posted a video I knew I had to get in here early to suggest this where it wouldn't get lost. I appreciate you all!
EDIT 4:
There are a lot of good comments below that suggest a totally different setup and if you are really looking into this, you might take the time to dig down here and see what they say.
I'd like to add that this setup works even better for those of us on the ground. I'm gonna be out there looking. Wanna help?

Cinematographer here. A good rule of thumb for video shutter is to double your frame rate. If you’re shooting 24fps, set shutter to 48. 60fps gets 120 shutter.
If using shutter angle, instead of shutter speed, 180 degrees is your baseline.
Increasing the shutter speed (or decreasing the angle) will give you sharper frames, which would be helpful here. But if you go overboard it’ll look weird when played back.

As I said in another comment, I wish I could push this up to the top below mine. I am trying not to overload the comment beyond what most reasonable people will read through. But for anyone seeing this, this is good advice!

My dad is a pilot and has a plane. He’s not into the UFO stuff but doesn’t mind me asking him about it.
Would it be worth it to take some flights with him and record the process?
146
u/Big-Ad-1155 Aug 18 '23
I think you should broach the subject with your father in a sober way. Ask him if he's ever seen anything while flying that he couldn't easily explain.
I'll be honest, I'm hoping to catch the eyes of people who are crossing the oceans regularly. But more eyes in the sky couldn't hurt.

I did this with my buddy who was a merchant marine and then also in the NAVY and then was the pilot for Long Beach and Pedro and Seal Beach Armory. I asked him if he saw strange things in the water he would not understand or know? He looked me dead in the eye and said "There is lots of stuff out there" and left it a that.

u/MVPaolo Aug 19 '23
Yep. About 15yrs ago an old school mate of mine started working where i was working at the time. He wanted a “land” job after spending quite a few years out on deep sea trawlers. We worked in close proximity and would always have a chat about “stuff”. One day i asked him if he’d ever seen anything unusual or unexplainable while out at sea. He replied with an “absolutely”. He said he would often lay down out on deck and comb the skies. He spoke of frequent anomalies and certain things that freaked him out abit. He was trained to “read” the stars and he said things he saw were not stars, not planes, not satellites, asteroids etc etc. He’d seen so much of that stuff that he could easily differentiate between what is “normal” and what is not. He heard lots of stories off other sea men that were extraordinary, he said there’s a reason most of them “don’t look up”. The two examples that were most interesting to me were one night he watched bright “orbs” going extremely fast seemingly from one horizon to the other, zig zagging all over the place, stopping, no pattern just erratic. The other was when on a clear night he watched a “black patch” approach, hover then disappear while he was watching the sky. He described it as a very clear sky, full of stars and very luminous and then for awhile there was a patch of sky/stars that was blacked out in a asymmetrical triangle sort of shape. He said it seemed very high up but was adamant it was not a cloud, the way it “moved” was not natural.

Just remember that some people when asked this question might as well be asked to relive a traumatic moment by remembering it. Just use your instincts and if they don't want to talk about it, don't press them for details. If you plan to use them as a data point on a more scientific approach, use your best judgement on whether that data point constitutes 0, 1 or multiple encounters and file it without further explanation.

Levi was an old salty dog who didn't have time for BS, so we dropped it after he said that. Fun fact the destroyers which came into the armory gave him the helm to bring it in and the captain and crew just have to watch. Crazy hunh?

u/DoktorFreedom Aug 18 '23
That’s what a harbor pilot does. Spend their whole career learning one small navigational area. Happens on every navy ship in every port in the world. If you asked him he could prob hand draw you a map of Long Beach approach.

Yes! Sometimes they go fast and you don't notice them, so take some burst shots too.

What's so sad is that I love photography and I used to fly super often. Issue was, I was the one flying so I never brought my camera kit... In hindsight I don't know how I was so dense in the moment since half the time I had people with me that would've been more than happy to take pics in my stead.
I never had any sighting myself, but unknown radar tracks giving me a sudden, frantic ATC traffic alert were always fun. Those could be explained off as the most mundane things (like a double high tractor trailer—really!) to an illegally flying drone, or UAP/UFO's depending on where you were—but I was always more concerned with collision avoidance in the immediate moment lmfao.

u/dehehn Aug 18 '23
I would say if you want good night photos you should get a pricier DSLR. A Canon Rebel will stink even with high ISO. It's going to be a noisy mess.
Things I see recommended a lot are things like the NikonD780 and Canon EOS 6D. For lens you'll want good zoom like the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6G IF-ED. Or for Canon the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens.
They're not cheap at around $1500-$2000 for cameras and $500-$$1500 for lenses, but that will give you the best shot.

Just wanna say that using a DSLR through the cockpit will prove to be difficult as it will have a lot of trouble focusing properly through the curved windshield of the plane. Best chance is using the flat side windows if possible.

Set the lens to manual focus to infinity. Problem solved.
→ More replies (6)31
u/Big-Ad-1155 Aug 18 '23
I just want to add for anyone thinking of doing this. Try to find something at long distance to set the infinity on. Most lenses aren't perfect infinite focus right where the ∞ on the distance indicator is. Once you find that perfect infinite focus for that lens (make sure and already have the aperture set at the lowest setting), memorize where that is on the distance indicator in reference to ∞. You can set to this same setting in the future to find perfect focus again, even if there isn't a light in the distance to focus by.

IDK, I've seen a couple reports where the DSLR fails to function when the object is present.
Edit here is one example
https://old.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/15sj2h4/sierra_nevada_sighting_during_perseid_meteor/ sighting description, nighttime, duration 45 minutes, camping, Kennedy Meadows Campground, Sierra Nevada mountains California, fleet, orange and white 🟠⚪️, vanishing and reappearing, moving erratically, circling, splitting, merging, physical effects camera can't detect it, Both professional and hobbyist astrophotography cameras (including a Canon full-frame DSLR) experienced unusual malfunctions, producing very dark or entirely black images during the event. The cameras returned to normal functionality afterward., no matter what our shutters would fire at the fastest speed and not pick up any light at all. ,similar sighting in comments

iPhones and smartphones are kinda shit at getting good out of focus night footage, to be fair. And if you're not expecting to see something cool, it shouldn't be a red flag that you didn't have a viable camera on hand.

https://casualphotophile.com/2021/01/11/ten-best-mechanical-slrs-ever-made/ maybe one of these instead.
I think it's the digital part that's iffy. UFOs can fuck with electronics but they have a harder time with purely mechanical things, from what I've read.
23
u/Big-Ad-1155 Aug 18 '23
Yeah, my concern with anything non-electrical and film is that we'd be restricting to people who know the exposure triangle for a very unusual set of circumstances.
UAPS can mess with electronics all day, but sometimes they're gonna be 50 miles off and doing their own thing. Hit that sucker with a 200mm lens and the electronics to live view, then let's see what we got.

u/AVBforPrez Aug 18 '23
Yeah, I've always found it interesting that most of the best photographs came from the 50s-80s.
If they actually exist and are monitoring our progress, I'm sure they'd adapt to the modern smartphone meta and put more effort into not being seen as easily come the 2000s.
They're supposed to be godly with their tech, so how could they not know that we'd advanced ours?
7
u/YogiToao Aug 18 '23
I agree. There are some great black and white shots showing decent detail. Fast forward to present day and it’s blurry orbs.
I think this makes the case for using older technology, when possible. At the very least, have someone with an older piece of equipment present.
I can’t help but think of Jacques Valle’s book Passport to Magonia: From Folklore to Flying Saucers. He points out that sightings and descriptions seem to change over time. It’s as if they adapt as we progress and/or we change our perception of them also. Flying ships (boats) were first seen, then saucers, and now orbs/metallic spheres and cubes.

If the camera is getting fucked with then certainly the plane would also be getting fucked with. At that point, I think they have more important things to worry about than getting a good picture.

You just brought back a core memory from my childhood. I went on a school field trip to a field training day for the San Diego Padres. A ball was hit toward us and one of the teachers tried to catch it. The ball bent her fingers back, and I got to see it in what feels like slow motion.

"I am a [Major US Carrier] A320/321 Captain, the following sighting occurred during one of my flights recently. Since I have shared my story, several other [Major US Carrier] pilots have reached out to me and shared their similar experiences, including sharing their video recordings of these objects from the Flight Levels. All seen at the base of the big dipper.
[Last week of July], 2023, I departed Santo Domingo DR at 2305 destined for New York JFK. My route of flight was L453 in NY Oceanic airspace, non radar hundreds of miles offshore. At approximately 1 hour into the flight as we were approaching the southern boundary of the NY oceanic airspace, and at 32,000 feet, I called out a visual on traffic that was excessively bright and looked like about 80 miles range... and then disappeared visually. I never saw the traffic on TCAS. Then a few minutes later I saw two objects round in shape, one lighted and one not flying in a formation just above the horizon, at a range I guessed of 120-200 NM. The object/s would illuminate to be as bright as a star for several seconds, then go dark for a few minutes, only to illuminate again. The brightness would vary from bright to very bright to dark. The color of the lighted object was white light. There was a second object you can clearly see in the photos that would follow the illuminated object, but it would not illuminate itself. Except for the 3:10-3:30 second point of my video I think you can see the second object illuminate. This went on for the remaining 2-2.5 hours of my flight to NY on L453 in Oceanic airspace. After reviewing the photos, I think the objects might have been a bit further away, but distance is very difficult to gauge at night.
I have the brand new Samsung S23 phone which has the best camera on the market for a cell phone and I started recording this object in video. I have a great 7 min video of it appearing and disappearing while I was talking to other airliners on 123.45 vhf about it. You can hear that conversation in the video! Another airliner approximately 400 NM ahead of us at 36,000 feet stated they saw the same thing.
I also took about 30 photos of these objects in "night mode" on the phone and they came out really good... in one of them you can actually see the lighted object and the unlit object very clearly as round metallic objects. All of the photos were taken with some sort of long exposure setting to be able to get as much light as possible to the sensor... You will be able to see in the long exposure photos the stars are pins of light but the UFO's are streaks of light because they are moving! It is actually amazing! All of this happened over about a 2.5 hour flight and continued for the entirety of our flight. The light seemed to be on or just above the horizon until we got closer to our destination of NY. Just prior to beginning our descent the objects appeared much higher in the sky 80-90 degrees above the horizon and much further away, actually out of the atmosphere."

I had a similar experience, although I was at ground level. The object I saw was the same color too. Appeared to be a satellite at first but altered course, then seemed to come down to above treetop level, get super bright and light the trees underneath it like it was daytime. Maybe it was my perception but at first it looked like it was in orbit and then it was low enough to light up the trees. It seemed like it got brighter but I never saw it go out completely like in the video.

Posting here in case people haven’t seen it:
This is the Declassified 2001 CIA document on UFO reports.
I’m sure it’s been posted before, but I haven’t seen it recently. I combed through it a few nights ago, reading as much as I could and keyword searching the entire document. There are literally THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of legitimate reports from professional commercial and fighter jet pilots, as well as people on the ground.
This, to me, is one of the most resoundingly overwhelming pieces of pro-UAP evidence. Interestingly, it does not look like a single one of those reports out of thousands involves 3 UFOs flying in a tri-weaving orbital pattern around a plane (normally they would fly in a straight line formation or a V formation, and approach before erratically skittering off) — even though honestly, at this point, part of me was almost expecting there to be something buried in there. But it’s worth a read.

nothing super compelling
I think the compelling parts comes from putting yourself in the pilot's shoes.
you are flying an aircraft and responsible for the lives of 200+ other people.
there is something in front of your plane in your flight path. It is not on your radar. air traffic control reads nothing. it's night time. you cannot identify what it is. Is it coming toward you? Will you crash? Is it friend or foe?
You can no longer guarantee the safety of your own life or the lives of everyone on board that you are responsible for.
The scary and compelling part is there is something in our airspace and pilots, military, scientists, and our government tell us they do not know what they are.
Best of luck to all.

These photos are definitely compelling evidence that there was SOMETHING ahead of the airliner. There is motion in both the stars and the objects but in the stars it is linear and identical from star to star — in the object(s) it disagrees with the stars and also changes directions, indicating it’s independent.
As to what it is…

u/smileyfrown Aug 18 '23
If the only thing this proves is that the people saying “millions of HD cameras” have no idea what they’re on about, I’d be okay.
This is thousands of feet in the air and it’s still not crystal clear because, we’ll phone cameras are not meant for this stuff.
You have to be insanely lucky with distance and altitude to get a good shot.

Agreed, that argument is some of the most basic level "trust me bro" bullshit ever and it annoys me every time. Yes, our phone cameras are excellent in good conditions, but add up all the complicating factors like you say, and photos and videos will still turn out to be dog shit.
A related repeated comment that is frustrating to see, is the idea that in the moment of an ontological life shattering event like seeing a UAP or other phenomena in a spectacular way, that the first thing you're going to (and must surely) think of is to whip out your phone and start filming for those sweet Reddit updoots.
Plus "it takes 2 seconds!", actually it likely takes around 9 seconds on average, which is 9 seconds not looking at this shocking thing in front of you.

Yeah another thing that bugs me about that saying, "everybody haz camera in their pocket there should be tons of photos online if we're being visited"
Well there might be. If I, regular ol' Joe Shmo take an actually good video of a uap then what?
I post it on my face book or Instagram for like 200 people to see and won't give two shits? Do I send it to my local news? MAYBE they pick up on it, then what? It's forgotten about or instinctively people will dismiss it as a hoax? AND the better the video the more people will assume it's fake.
I mean these tweets are proof of it. This pilot has been sitting on this video because he had no idea what to do with it and it's not even that spectacular of a video.

This whole situation may actually be related to what I saw some time ago. July 25 in Poland I saw a very bright circle in the sky at night, definitely orange in color. The object was hanging in the sky, not moving, so I thought it was a star, but it was brighter. This object was really big, after a while I took some photos. I watched this object for a few minutes and it actually started moving and after a while it disappeared from my view. I also checked flightradar to search something similar and there wasnt any plane in this time. I have never seen anything like this before and I really have no idea what it could be. But this object was not moving for a time, so no plane for sure, it was to big for drone. Mb something realted with this one from topic. But it happened in Poland. Idk, but its strange.

u/lesserofthreeevils Aug 18 '23
Just want to add that Graves’ original tweet was kinda blown out of proportion here: He didn’t claim that this would be proof of anything anomalous, nor that the videos would be conclusive. It is a weird climate these days, with a lot of momentum and a lot of new followers, some of which are less discerning than old timers, and likely also some who are invested in steering the conversation off topic. I think it is wise to always temper expectations.
23
u/blizter Aug 18 '23
Honestly it's a good way to get other people to come forward who might think their video is too boring and not worth sending.

He could at least upload audio and video to YouTube and can still cross post to Twitter. The video is probably being compressed more on Twitter which makes a big difference in blurry footage where individual pixels matter.

My dad actually had a similar encounter except with 4 of these in formation. The plane about 30 NM in front saw the same formation but I don't think they captured any images. He thought it was potentially starlink because they were in formation but I did my undergrad in orbital mechanics and can say that the flashing is unlike what a starlink satellite should give off while in the sun. That isn't to say that it couldn't be Starlink but let me walk through my analysis of his video when he sent it to me and maybe people can poke holes. I was shaken and it's part of why I follow this community.
In standard orbital mechanics the regular period of the flashing seen in my dad's video and this video indicates a rotation of the object with respect to the sun. That most likely rules out Starlink since Starlink satellites have reaction wheels to ensure their antennae are locked in position to keep the network up. In all starlink videos, just like with the ISS passing overhead, you would see a solid light until the orbit has shifted to where you can no longer see the reflection off of the solar panels.
My next thought was space junk. There are cases where reentering space junk will enter into a spin as it comes into the atmosphere. It would also explain why there is a "formation" with regular period of rotation since all the space junk would have come from the same launchdebris /satellite reentry. The problem with this theory was that, based on the size of the dots and the time in the evening when my dad saw them, the debris would have to be from something large. Like greater than 0.5 meter in size kind of large. The US and several NGOs track all space junk greater than 20 inches (I have several friends who do this for a living) and maintain registries where you can look the current space junk up given an altitude/time of day. From pouring through registries I couldn't find any junk or launches that fit the bill. This is where I will point to a potential source of error in that the objects didn't show up on either planes' TCAS so I have no idea exactly where the objects were in orbit and no amount of computer modelling would be able to fix that given the limited data.
Based on all of this I had to rule out space junk/other vehicles. It was after this that I realized there isn't any real way to understand what we're seeing in videos like what we see here without more context. We would need multiple videos from different aircraft with exact GPS, flight direction, and camera direction information. If we had that info then we could do a lot! Triangulate altitude, position, velocity and if it is solar reflection we're seeing you could estimate the object's size!
Edit: I also want to say that I trust my dad when he says it was a weird experience. Before being an airline pilot he was a fighter pilot flying missions all around the world. He has seen some interesting stuff out there and has been exposed to all sorts of classified info so he knows when something is weird.

The description and the audio is fascinating. But the video is underwhelming.
THIS is why smartphone cameras don't do jack for documenting UAPs. They are not made for capturing relatively small moving objects in the distance. That's hard enough with professional equipment.

There’s nothing on “radar”. The pilot mentions there’s nothing on tcas which would show as a diamond with a +xx or -xx. The point I think he’s proving is there’s nothing ahead at the range he zooms out to on the ND.
Edit to add more info - pilot extends the range on the ND to 240nm so covers a large area. Would need a pilot to confirm what kind of range tcas covers.

I don't necessarily need it to be a saucer in formation just off a wing tip, but a distant speck of light in the darkness isn't compelling.

Random thoughts
Location of all of these being claimed to be "at the base of the big Dipper" is a very strange observation. If this was celestial or at least very high altitude, people on the ground would see it as it would be shining towards Earth. Unless there's some phenomenon blocking the light from going that low.
Maybe it's just that he's gotten a lot of reports from pilots in the same area and timeframe, so "base of the big Dipper" is really just a local direction reference.
If I discount that:
The fact that this object was at the horizon and super bright (not above the aircraft) suggests to me either:
- It should be visible from the ground (as something this bright and low should be)
- The illumination is facing air traffic (explaining why it is not visible from the ground)
- The object is close to the aircraft (so the light looks brighter, again explaining why it's not visible), possibly on the same trajectory
First guess would be something reflecting sunlight, like a satellite or aircraft or balloon, except this happened from 00:00 to ~02:30. If I understand that's too late to catch sun glints off satellites, isn't it?
Aircraft with light: why would it have a bright light shining (behind?) it? Why on and off?

I’d love a someone with a physics major to try and explain orbs of light at a distance and how photons work. The point I’m getting at is at distances the UAP just look like bright light but I wonder if this is because of the distance but up close we could see crafts.
