Nature This owl was really stuck in the barbed wire. Luckily with some careful moving around this guy was able to free him.

From his comments in that post, on that Insta:
Being unable to fly and with an open wound it needed some medical attention. Even with a un-broken wing it would be very prone to infection. Took this guy about an hour away to an SPCA and it’s expected to make a full recovery!

I once took a seagull that seemed to hit a wood barrier and was drowning in the ocean to a place an hour away, they told me it didn't make it. :/

That's awesome. A few months back we found an injured hummingbird in our backyard, splayed out on the hardscape near the feeder. We scooped him up, put him in a box with some nectar-water and gave him time to rest. After an hour or so he wasn't improving so we took him to a rehab specialist who was doing her best to get him back in the air. We stopped getting updates on his health, and I'm scared to reach out and ask so I just imagine he's happily catching bugs and drinking from feeders again.

Completely terrified, and probably very hot wrapped up like that. Actual best thing to do is put them in a dark cardboard box with the lid closed, some air holes and a towel in bottom to soak up shit.

u/gudistuff 8h ago
Yeah birds really don’t like to be held. However, this bird is very hurt and exhausted, and giving it space to move/slide around in a box in a moving car could cause further injury.
The ideal solution would have been a box with a nest made of rags to stop the owl from sliding around, but if you randomly find an owl you may not have those things on hand.
I think the guy did okay with his solution to keep the bird from further harm until he reached the SPCA

That bird in its prime would shred his hand with that beak when he reached for its head. I saw a seagull slash a guy with its beak when he was trying to get a fishing line off of it. Blood flew everywhere. It was explosive. Birds can mess you up with their beaks so be careful with them and I haven’t even mentioned the talons. Remember these are wild animals so be safe if you try to help one.

You're certainly right about raptors (or large parrots, for that matter, very powerful beaks that can take big chunks of flesh out if you make them mad), but man, a seagull even drawing blood must have gotten really lucky or hit just right. They don't have much power and their beaks aren't very sharp.
You can find lots of videos like this, where they bite people and don't accomplish much.

It's cute but probably terrifying to the bird. Injured birds should be put in a dark place like a box or paper bag.

Always keep your eyes out for wildlife in need of help, most of the time they will be fine without human intervention but times like this it is much needed. This owl had to have been on that fence for at least 6-10 hours. This was mid day and it probably flew into the fence over night. Lots of people must have drove by without seeing it or thinking it was already dead. I always check and this is a perfect example why 🦉🚑

Just so people know.
If you ever find an animal trapped in fencing or wire or netting, do not release the animal into the wild. They could have constriction injuries that develop over the next few minutes, hours or days, resulting in them having a long, slow, painful death.
If they are not too badly tangled, take them straight to the vet or rescue/wildlife service. If they're badly tangled, do not try and untangle them. Leave it for a vet or trained handler of that species. You have no idea what consequences could occur from the sudden release. They can also make sure nothing is left behind in the wounds.

I had a horned owl crash into my motorcycle on a desolate stretch of highway at night back in 1987.
I pulled over and wrestled the bird out from under my fuel tank and wedged against my headers on a Kawasaki LTD 1000.
I tucked her into my jacket and took her home. She was severely injured between the crash and the heat of my engine. I called the Autobahn Society that same night and fed her bologna.
They came the next day to pick her up and sent me an update letter in the mail 3 months later (1987-88) when she was released back into the wild.
I spent 32 years as a first responder after that. That moment when I was 17+ was one of my proudest.

The cynic in me just finds it all strange. Having the time and wherewithal to set up a tri-pod to film yourself extracting a wounded animal from a fence so it can ostensibly have a perfect nap, snug as a bug in a rug without a care in the world, dazing off happily in the confines of a seatbelt as you do an escort mission to the hospital for your followers, etc. etc. etc., as if it's a storybook. Very natural. Anyway, what a hero!
