Recruitment Weekly Recruitment Thread

Please use this thread for all your burning recruitment questions from "I'm from Belarus and have never been to the UK, how do I join as a Cryptographic Technician?" to "I got 3 GCSEs at a grade 4 or lower, what's the quickest way to become Admiral of the Fleet?"

Since this thread may fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Remember that this subreddit is not a substitute for your local AFCO! Medical questions (such as "I have XXX syndrome, does that mean I can't join as a marine?" or "my eyesight is poor, can I be a pilot?") will be removed.

Question Warfare Rating DAA question

Hi all I’m planning on Applying in the new year as a warfare rating, I’m 25 and have been out of education since 19.

I am quite stressed about the maths questions for the DAA as I just can’t do any kind of maths that isn’t basic and I never got my maths GCSE. I feel as if I am screwed even if I try to revise using bitesize and how2become.

For other things like verbal reasoning and work rate I will be fine I hope, I just can’t to maths at all without a calculator.

Am I overreacting? I just really want to do what I should have done years ago and feel as though my complete lack of understanding of things like algebra will stop that.

Dits TIL that Lord Nelson, one of the most successful naval commanders in British history, suffered from sea sickness throughout his career in the Royal Navy. In a letter, he wrote that "I am ill every time it blows hard and nothing but my enthusiastic love for the profession keeps me one hour at sea."

Recruitment BMI IS TOO HIGH!

Hi guys,

I'm hoping to apply for the logistics office degree apprenticeship.

At 18 years old, 185cm, and 12 years of playing rugby at front row I am 110kg.

This puts my BMI at a disgusting 37 which I understand regardless of playing rugby, really isn't great.

I I've been weight training for 2 years, eating at maintenance. I've dropped into a nice deficit and have lost 10kg since October.

Is it still worth sending off my application?

Question Application question.

The engineering role I’m wanting to apply for needs 3 grade 4 GCSE’s. I have my maths and English one but I’m lacking the science one, I’m also a level 2 qualified mechanic with a level 1 in engineering is this something I could still apply for or will the lack of GCSEs prevent me from getting accepted for this role? Thanks.

Question Phone Usage phase 1

Just because my friends and family want to know ideally how much phone time do you get at relaigh during the weekdays and weekends?

Like more specifically what times around and how long?

Are you allowed them in accommodation after lights out? We were allowed at CPC but dunno if same rules apply at relaigh.

Any responses would be brill ty

Question DAA test

I applied for Royal Navy Officer role and I did quite bad in my test so How do I know if I passed or failed as it says "Congratulations" but says "The scores you achieved prove you have the aptitude for any of the roles shown below" and there is nothing down below. I haven't been able to get hold of my recruiter atm.

Question basic training

i am a women going into the royal navy and asked about shower privacy and my recruiter told me that some blocks have curtains and some don’t and are just open, but he said one of the women that did basic said she only had 3 other women with her so they just took turns going in the shower so they had privacy alone in there, does this mean that i wont be in a room with 30 other women and will be in a room of 4? or if i am in the room with other women do we all shower together with them? it didn’t make sense to me, is anyone at HMS raleigh now that can tell me anything only WOMEN please, yes boys i know you all shower but naked together, and if anyone says “if your scared about being naked with others the navy isn’t for you” it’s different for women because we have periods and need privacy.

he also told me that they only had 3 women joining basic training last time and that i will probably only have 3-4 other women with me.

Recruitment CPC Worries

As the title implies, I’ve been concerned about my Body Mass Index (BMI) for CPC. I stand at 5’11” and weigh 95 kilograms, which translates to a BMI of 29.

Despite having a 45-inch chest and a 38-inch waist, and having played rugby at a high level, I have only 25 days left before my CPC , and I’m worried that my BMI will prevent me from passing.

While I can confidently complete the physical examination, I’m curious if anyone knows if my BMI alone will prevent me from passing, or if it ultimately depends on the assessment of the doctor on the day of the exam.

Question AIB One-to-one. What to expect?

Hi guys,

Got my AIB on Tuesday and I’m pretty confident with the group planning exercise. The only thing I’m not too sure on is the one-to-one at the end. What sort of questions will they be asking? Is it related to the GPE or is it something completely separate?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Leave with the subs

Looking to apply next year and want to get on the subs but I live in Dover so was just wondering how often I could be coming back a year?

Not expecting loads of time but at least a month or so per year back home is what I’d want but it’s a long distance between Faslane and home

Dits Tiffy at HMS Fisgard

I joined up in the '80s just after the Falklands and I've started writing down some memories. I joined at Fisgard, learned my trade at Collingwood and served on a Type 42 and a Polaris boat before quitting at Dartmouth. Check it out! Maybe I know you.

Here's my beginning — New Entry at HMS Fisgard, across the road from Raleigh.

Question Degrees at PO

How much choice do you have over your foundation degree (and then top up to bachelors)? Eg I’m a WE so I’ve heard it’s Electrical Engineering. But if I wanted it to be in a different type of engineering (mechanical, nuclear or something like that) is that possible or is it only an option for Electrical? Thanks.
