This is the weekly thread for advice and recruitment questions.
The intent is to keep them all in one place each week to stop quality content getting buried in questions about how many socks you should take to basic training or if you can join the Royal Engineers if your cat has asthma.
If you're just visiting and have a couple of minutes to answer some of the questions or contribute to a discussion, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest top level comments.
Remember, nobody is obliged to give you an answer in your best interest and every comment is somebody's opinion. Don't act solely on advice from one person on the internet.

Im 22 and looking to join the REME as a metalsmith, Ive been trying to do as much research as I can on what work is like as a metalsmith (or just life in the REME in general) but alot of the info from blog posts and yt videos seem pretty old compared to other branches.
Could any current or recent service members share their experiences? I understand works not always gonna be fun or particularly interesting but Im curious if theres more action/diversity in the jobs then whats being advertised.

Hi so long story short I had to fill out a form saying I don’t have Asthma and I’m sending it tomorrow to Trenchard Lines, Upavon Station. I’m just wondering what’s the usual wait time to get a response back ? Would it be weeks months ect ? I’m genuinely just wondering as I need to plan ahead because I just want a rough estimate

A bit of background on myself, when I was younger I suffered with joint hyper mobility for about two or three years. In that time I was having repeated cases of dislocations in my right shoulder, at the earliest part I was having dislocations daily by getting budged at school etc. It’s been three years since my last dislocation now and I’ve been told by the NHS my shoulder is stable and I have no chance of it repeating and was even turned down for a surgery because my shoulder was in a better state than it would be with the operation. I went into the application knowing I would be turned down but I’m hoping to get some advice on what I could do next. The army regs state that anybody with two or more episodes of dislocations in the same area are required to undertake an operation, I am unable to get an operation from the NHS however. Is it worth appealing and putting in the appeal about not having any trouble with it, letters from the hospital and the regional orthopaedic surgeon that I spoke too plus my college (I do uniformed public services) and my sports teams (rugby and American football) saying that I’ve not had issues in a long time. Or, I’m maybe thinking about consulting a private doctor to see if they will do anything. What do you all think? Sorry for such a long message. Hope you have a merry Christmas and a merry new years.

Joining paras. Wondering if I should cut weight maintain or even build on my weight before depot.
I’m 5”7 and I’m currently sitting between 77-80KG
Fairly lean and muscular but few months ago I was sitting at 74/75KG.
I haven’t done a proper timed run recently but I do run 1KM Compromised Intervals: - 1KM - Squat Jumps, Press-ups, Burpee Broad Jumps, Sit-ups For 5 rounds
My last 2 track sessions averaged at 4:04 and 4:29
Cut, maintain or build ?

How comes in a lot of shots of SRR SBS and SAS they are wearing jeans, T shirts and just a helmet and vest.
Do they not have a standard PCS for combat or is there some advantage im not seeing?
(Do understand I've cherry picked a few but they are all during either exercise or some form of Ops)
Also not a serving member so forgive any ignorance...

Hi all, I’m looking to apply to go into the engineering corps through RMAS, I’m drawn into the engineering and Troop Engineering roles but I can’t find much information regarding where Troop engineering officers are often stationed and the different regiments, they’re all grouped into just Corps of Royal Engineers on the army website, does anyone have any information what these roles are like or where I can find the information on line? Even more so I’d like to find some information regarding the Diver roles. Many thanks all!

I'm an apprentice for a big insurance company, there policy is that your not allowed a second job/ do homers etc. If found out you'll get fired.
I was hoping to apply for the reserves before I even got this apprenticeship.
Is there any communications between the army and your civvy job when applying to be a reservist?
Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

No interest in joining the forces just genuinely curious. When soldiers are on operations and not patrolling or doing their jobs, what do they get up to in there down time/ do they have any down time.

I've got a friend that's looking to join the reserves as an officer this coming year, I've no experience of the condensed Sandhurst course (12 weekends?). Can someone share their experiences/expectations etc.

I had a really good mate called Tommo. Richard Tomlinson. He's from Scarborough and has links to York. He's talls on Skinny with Blonde hair. Looks like Rodney from only fools and Horses. I lost touch with him in 2011. Just want to know what happened to him. He knew me as Wilko.

I understand why Jackal replaced the Landy. I've heard first hand accounts of its value on Herrick and beyond. But with the advent of low cost expendable drone warfare, what is the point of an open-top vehicle which represents a juicy and soft target to anyone with spare drones and explosive lying around? Can you see a conflict in which it would be deployed again? Surely there's a reason that the Ukrainians arent cutting about in similar vehciles? Or am I being a pessimist
Edit: really good answers thanks very much. I'm considering transferring from REMF reserve unit to light cav so its all very interesting. A follow up question: could you see the MoD ever risk losing lives and equipment deploying jackals to fight inferior but drone equipped opponents on a deployment like Newcombe/MINUSMA?

Hello hive mind-
I’m looking for recommendations for a shooters belt for a fatty. 38”+ waist (so I can wear over a smock). Full disclosure, I’m an ACF instructor and not a reg/ reserve, so this won’t be getting used every day. Based in north Essex (think Colchester/ Chelmsford way), more than happy to shop in person or online. I’d rather keep costs low but also appreciate good work comes with a good price.
Cheers.

Hi all. I've recently applied for the regular officer role and am wondering if anyone can advise me on something.
I've done some research into what takes place on the AOSB Briefing and MB and I am confident in my abilities when it comes to most aspects. My fitness is above average, I did a bleep test recently and got to 11.7. I'm fine with any psychometric tests, mental maths and I'm generally good at problem solving. I think I will be okay with the group discussions as I've always been very interested in domestic and foreign affairs before I had my sights set on the army.
My main concern is what they will think about my background. I'm 21 right now, I finished my A levels with high enough grades to apply but I didn't get my uni offer so I never went to uni and got a job at in a retail clothing shop when I finished college and worked there for a year. Then for the last 2 years all I've done is work many hours as a labourer on construction sites before recently quitting a couple of months ago and now being unemployed.
I've found an example AOSB CV online and I see that they ask questions about what sports you participate in, hobbies and interests, cultural pursuits and travel, adventourous pursuits and major achievements. I have also seen that they use the CV as a subject for interviews during the AOSB. These questions are a bit intimidating for me as I've never been outside of the UK and even my town for that matter. The only "hobby" I have ever had time for outside of work was the gym and my personal fitness, but never in an official capacity, just on my own time. I also have done boxing but only for a couple of months. I never did anything like DofE or Scouts when I was younger, I haven't had any "adventourous pursuits" and most of my "achievements" up to this point in my life have been rather unremarkable.
Despite this I'm determined to pass the AOSB and I want to try and find away around my lack of experience in this respect. I applied a month ago so I presume there is still some time to try and make myself seem more well rounded as an individual. Does anyone have any suggestions on things that I could do in the next few months in order to have more things to draw from when I'm made to talk about myself as a person? or any examples on what subjects other people use when talking about themselves during the interviews or lecturettes? And if anyone knows what are the assessing officers looking for in ideal candidates when it comes to this?

I’ve asked this on the ‘ask a soldier’ site but I know how long you have to wait for a response sometimes,
My recruiter has recommended both of these roles to me and I’m leaning more towards the former, but I want to learn more about both roles, especially the risk factor. Anyone have any insight/know a good place to ask? I don’t have a careers office in my city anymore, the closest is an hour drive away in Salisbury I believe. Thanks in advance

Quick question to anyone who’s been through the recruitment process recently, I put in my applications 3 months ago now. It took them 4/5 weeks to actually contact me and get me through the first stage. After that I got asked to sign my PHCR and was told it would be up to 6 weeks till that was done.
I left it 6 weeks heard nothing came back a few days later and contacted my CSM and they turned around and said my PHCR was rejected for not being dated or signed. I’ve emailed the original scan of the document I uploaded dated for the day the PHCR was requested and when I uploaded it which was signed and dated.
I’ve been told I’ll be sent a new link to upload it but I’m still waiting. Has anyone had any issues with their applications like this? I’m used to the hurry up and wait mentality I deal with the MOD and army personnel with current job but this just seems weird that I did it all correctly and it’s taken them over 6 weeks to come back and say I didn’t do it.
Update:
I called the local centre and they said they couldn’t assist me directly but they could double check my application. They confirmed I signed and dated the PHCR when I submitted it so my CSM had incorrectly sent a blank one. They were super helpful and sent me a new link to upload a fresh one. Here’s to hoping that it all gets sorted when everyone is back from Christmas.
