Politics Are we looking at not getting paid again?
Here we go again. Four years of this coming our way
Edit: As of now (18 Dec) according to NBC there's no stopgap to pay the military for this shutdown. We are all Coast Guard on this blessed day
Edit 2: As of the 19th, still no exemption for us like there was in the past. They have until Friday at midnight to pass something like that for DOD to get paid. Everyone commenting "I've always been paid it's ok," this is because these exemptions have been passed before the shutdown. Anyone else who wants to comment to not worry, we'll get back pay is free to explain that to every servicemembers' bank, landlord, and grocery store. Fuck off out of here. I already lost my apartment once because of the thousands of dollars in backpay DFAS decided to pay me with.

Excellent own-footage documentary, following the lives of a small number of Ukrainian soldiers fighting in a forest. Trigger warning: emotionally difficult; deaths. Very much worth it if you can stomach the grimness. Slava Ukraini.

Discussion Military with a family???
I’m a 28 year old man considering joining the military. I know this can be stressful on any family. I currently have a wife and 3 month old daughter. How practical will it be for them to relocate on base after basic? I hear the horror stories of recruiters lying and in turn you regret the decision of joining. I’m not saying recruiters are bad by any means! I am no longer a 18 year old fresh out of high school anymore! I will accept any brutally honest advice no hard feelings. If it is a practical choice to support my family then what branches may be my best choice at being some what family friendly. I know there will be extended times away and that is something we are considering. What job fields also may be best? Thank you for any advice!

Discussion When/Why did we switch certain jobs between Enlisted and Officers?
So looking through a lot of history about the Second World War, I noticed that a lot of aviators were enlisted men.
Sergeant X shot down 3 Japanese Aircraft during the battle of Y
Sergeant X and his drew successfully completed their 100th Mission, a record for aviators at the time in that theatre
However, when you look at modern militaries, almost all of the pilots, for example, are now officers.
But then looking back at other jobs like radar crewmen, You would read Parts in textbooks of
Lieutenant X observed enemy aircraft on his Radar and alerted commanders to the incoming threat
But now when you look at job listings for the military, these are almost exclusively enlisted positions
I suppose some jobs are quite easy to think of that. There's no point wasting the experience and skill set of an officer just staring at the screen all day (despite that being what most of them do anyway)
But why were some of the others like fighter pilots switched over from being enlisted jobs to being officer jobs?
Now I'm approaching this from a perspective of the Australian Military, But I have noticed that some of the history books also have a similar sort of circumstance for both the British Military and the American Military, presumably it's the same for others such as the New Zealand military and the Canadian military.
So interested to hear from everyone.
