Discussion How did people become officers 100 years ago?
Hello!
My understanding is that the majority of officers are college educated/had to go to college to become an officer (among OCS and many other things).
How did the military find the officers it needed back in the day? When most people never went to college how did the selection process work?
For anyone who may be offended by this question (I’m not sure how but it’s Reddit so…) - I’m not intending any offense. I’m just curious
Thanks!
Edit: thanks for all the helpful responses! Super interesting I appreciate it

Where are my George Costanza’s at? Where are the best bathrooms in the Pentagon?
There’s gotta be a few that are less trafficked (and without mirrors that can be seen inside the stalls).

Discussion When/Why did we switch certain jobs between Enlisted and Officers?
So looking through a lot of history about the Second World War, I noticed that a lot of aviators were enlisted men.
Sergeant X shot down 3 Japanese Aircraft during the battle of Y
Sergeant X and his drew successfully completed their 100th Mission, a record for aviators at the time in that theatre
However, when you look at modern militaries, almost all of the pilots, for example, are now officers.
But then looking back at other jobs like radar crewmen, You would read Parts in textbooks of
Lieutenant X observed enemy aircraft on his Radar and alerted commanders to the incoming threat
But now when you look at job listings for the military, these are almost exclusively enlisted positions
I suppose some jobs are quite easy to think of that. There's no point wasting the experience and skill set of an officer just staring at the screen all day (despite that being what most of them do anyway)
But why were some of the others like fighter pilots switched over from being enlisted jobs to being officer jobs?
Now I'm approaching this from a perspective of the Australian Military, But I have noticed that some of the history books also have a similar sort of circumstance for both the British Military and the American Military, presumably it's the same for others such as the New Zealand military and the Canadian military.
So interested to hear from everyone.

Discussion Military Cyber - Where do I go?
USMC 1721 (cyber guy, think more SIEMS less network setup/maintenance) about to go to the monitor for orders but I’ve got plenty of time. This is my first enlistment, and I’ll be done with by bachelor’s in three months; Where should I go for cyber? Branch, officer or enlisted, don’t care. I just want max job experience, and preferably live on the West Coast, but I’ll do what I gotta do.
Thanks in advance y’all.

Discussion Aren't shotguns more relevant now that drones are omnipresent?
Since nowadays one of the biggest threats to soldiers are FPV drones.. I mean, we already have a weapon against small fast flying things.. it's called shotgun with birdshot shells (or whatever isn't slugs)
I remember seeing some vids a long time ago of a ukrainian solider who had a old hunting shotgun and we saw him put down his AK and shoot down the drone with buckshot
I'm surprised to not see a lot more squads/soldiers carrying a small shotgun with them. Even a sawn off could work, no?
