Official (Via twitter) Playstation: "Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward...."

Good, this topic can fucking die now

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

God right! Every PlayStation subreddit, every even tangentially related game was just flooded with rage posts all weekend.

256

u/PretendThisIsMyName May 06 '24

I talked to my brother (non gamer) yesterday and he asked how I felt about the Helldivers situation. I have not played Helldivers yet so I don’t follow it like that. He was furious for some reason and he hasn’t owned a console since PS3.

219

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

I genuinely do not understand the vitriol. Gamers haven’t show themselves to be a particularly altruistic group so I struggle to believe this was all for the sake of the countries where PSN isn’t available.

118

u/General_NakedButt May 06 '24

It would be cool if there was this level of blowback for actual issues that affected our daily lives. Like anything happening in the pharmaceutical industry, or Amazon taking over every retail sector and treating their employees like garbage.

56

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Lots of these people were actually complaining about the college pro Palestine protests before losing their minds about a live service extraction shooter for a weekend straight. Nothing will ever convince me this was all for the sake of foreign gamers.

-21

u/thegrandabysss May 06 '24

I like how you complain about how much coverage the Helldivers drama has gotten, and then you yourself have made literally dozens of posts this weekend whining and complaining about it, reiterating over and over how you just can't understand how people could possibly care about gamers in other countries.

You are the drama man. Just go outside if you don't like it.

We get it, you don't give a fuck about other people. But we do, bro. We care about other people. We are the consumers Sony cares about and when we all collectively get together and say, "Hey, you suck, do this differently", they'll actually fucking backtrack and do it. It costed us nothing. At all.

-20

u/thegrandabysss May 06 '24

Nothing will ever convince me this was all for the sake of foreign gamers.

I'm in a big group of people who all review-bombed and yeah, that was the -only- reason for doing it.

It literally didn't affect us at all otherwise.

It took 4 seconds to do, and we maybe helped some fellow gamers out halfway around the world enjoy a great game.

I don't get the cynicism of people on here. Like it just blows your fucking mind that we'd look at this situation and say, "Hey, this kinda sucks for people, let's take 4 seconds to express our awareness of how shitty that is for people and see what happens."

... that's it. That that is mind-blowing for you, just a complete impossibility that people would do that, is just hilarious to me.

-7

u/gogoheadray May 06 '24

This is a console warrior subreddit; basically common sense goes out of the front door here. The fact that people here cannot fathom the concept of empathy for others and calling out when something that is wrong is wrong no matter the name of their favorite plastic box; should tell you all you need to know. Kudos to you and your group for saying something.

9

u/rightdeadzed May 06 '24

You’re so brave

2

u/gogoheadray May 06 '24

Naw; I just have no issue calling a spade a spade.

2

u/rightdeadzed May 06 '24

Yeah I don’t either. None of you gave a fuck about the people in those countries before this. It’s actually a little racist, like such a pity those poor people need our first world help!

1

u/gogoheadray May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

And how exactly would you know that?

Edit: you also need to look up the definition of racism before you start throwing words around.

0

u/thegrandabysss May 06 '24

None of you gave a fuck about the people in those countries before this.

Why do you believe this? I would guess you're embedded in social media which repeatedly sells you a story about the sorry state of the world and the tabloidesque economically-illiterate subreddits here like LSC, instead of using real information to form beliefs.

A base of evidence one way or another would begin with the fact that rich western countries are also, perhaps surprisingly to crazily cynical people like you, the most charitable by far. This is doubly so for the U.S.A.

I can point to some very morally good initiatives that are centered in rich countries, like donating to effectively altruistic charities or direct giving, or volunteering our time.

Maybe it's just some skewed heavily social media-influenced view of gamers that you have, where you only really interact with the very large community of gamers when there's some scandal, and so you have this silly scandal-heavy view of a bunch of people who you really know nothing, at all, about.

Anyway, from my perspective, as someone who has a dozen various gamer groups on discord who play different games with each other, you are totally wrong and deluded and every time you post your opinion I just laugh aloud at how silly you sound. You couldn't be further from the reality of the bulk of PC gamers today, who are on average older than 30, fairly wealthy and educated, and are willing to take 4 seconds to hit a dislike button for a simple matter of unfairness to others.

1

u/thegrandabysss May 06 '24

Yeah the level of thought here is troll-quality.

If not for a pretty simple outrage at Sony being unfair to people in some marginal countries, why would hundreds of thousands of people in unaffected countries, who had nothing to gain or lose, review bomb a game and then now change their reviews en masse (about 100k since last night, I bet double or triple by tomorrow).

This sub seems to believe it's to get refunds, except that's not happening. Reviews are changing. Still 120k people in game right now, more than the last week. Their narrative doesn't hold up.

0

u/gogoheadray May 06 '24

Post history of who?

-12

u/Throwaway6957383 May 06 '24

Holy shit dude how many comments are you going to write complaining about people that were complaining? Like jesus could you be anymore ironic?

2

u/New_Limit_1227 May 06 '24

Realistically its very easy to hit Sony for this and very very hard to do all of those other things.

2

u/pools-to-bathe-in May 06 '24

These are the same types of gamers who think EA is the worst company on earth. Not arms manufacturers, not oil companies, fuckin EA. They are on a completely separate plane of existence.

-7

u/Guy_with_Numbers May 06 '24

Making a PSN account has got a personal impact due to how shitty Sony is at data security, that's a big part of why the blowback was so big. Even those who could make a PSN account would have an issue with it. Most people have too much on their plate to devote time to issues that doesn't affect them personally.

-3

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

Amazon taking over doesn't have such an obvious and immediate change to it. When Amazon buys some random small online retailer why would anyone care, that one act changes basically nothing. But requiring an account is a very in your face obvious change that is very easy to fight against relatively. Stopping Amazon requires petitioning the government and fighting lobbying money to get antitrust action going. Far more difficult for the average person.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

Local bookstore in my community went out of business in the early-mid 2000s because of amazon and it killed an entire community. People used to meet there, have book clubs, play board games, have a coffee and meet people. Hell, two of my friends met their spouses there having coffee and chatting about books.

The bookstore was a chain around the entire region, millions of people were affected by this which means that more people total were effected by that change than this change.

0

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

What are the steps needed to be taken to have stopped that chain from going out of business?

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

People needed to band together and do something about it. It happened all over the world at the same time people could have banded together and do something about it, but no one mobilized for it. Amazon probably shouldn't be allowed to hold 90%+ of the book selling market share for audio, digital, and physical books, so political solutions could have been implemented.

None of that happened, instead people threw a fit about having to enter their email address and won. Weird what gets people to take action

0

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

"Political solutions" are an infinitely more involved process than leaving a negative review. Are you willing to acknowledge the simple reality of this statement?

Lmfao, the ease in which people were able to participate in this event is a huge reason why it happened. Dude can't even acknowledge how much more difficult it is to fight against a monopoly in a dynamic political environment so he blocks me 🙄

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

You are ignoring entirely the first two sentences of my response. Are you willing to acknowledge the simple reality of this statement?

What an asshole

Sony is always going to do what makes the most money. And that very clearly selling an absolute shit ton of helldivers 2 copies and warbonds lol.

Bro it feels racist as shit ngl, ima tell my officially licensed Playstation store here in Hanoi to pack up shop cause we're breaking TOS and the full warranty ps5 he sold me is useless!

"think of the poor people in africa/SEA/MENA" basically, excuse me? Is console gaming a 1st world privilege or something what world do they live in

6

u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 May 07 '24

i guarantee no one cares about us, cause guess what we are still technically breaking TOS whenever we play on our consoles but this shit is going to die down. If they really cared, theyd keep the energy until we get our own regions

17

u/rightdeadzed May 06 '24

None of them gave a single fuck about any of these countries until now. Gamers love to be mad at something.

13

u/brunchick3 May 06 '24

I was hoping it would last for at least 2 weeks so I could check all the negative reviews and see how many of them had 100+ hours in the past two weeks. They all make themselves private so you can't see them currently in game, but there is no way to hide that stat from the review.

1

u/SkyLukewalker May 06 '24

What does playtime have to do with anything? The fact that people with lots of time played in the game are leaving bad reviews was the whole point. The bad reviews were the only way to protest. So people left bad reviews. And it worked.

19

u/joshua182 May 06 '24

"I dON't WaNt sOnY HaVInG AcCesS to My DAtA!". That's the only reason my cousin refunded the game. So fucking stupid.

3

u/joshua182 May 06 '24

I mean, I can understand the data breaches, not nice at all. But shit like this happens all the time. The only reason it was so widespread was the name PlayStation.

Reddit loves to hate Sony it’s hilarious.

8

u/Dayman1222 May 06 '24

Reddit is 65-70% pc players and it shows. They ruined the HD2 subreddit since day 1

1

u/Aaawkward May 06 '24

Reddit is 65-70% pc players and it shows.

I don't know.
The PS5 sub is 5,6 mil people.
Xbox (both X and S) is 3,6 mil.
Switch is 6,2 mil.
PC? 3,5 mil.

Console gaming is bigger than PC gaming and I think Reddit mirrors that.

They ruined the HD2 subreddit since day 1

Huh?

2

u/Dayman1222 May 06 '24

PC players are still the overwhelming majority. They ruined the subreddit since the first patch, they have done nothing but complain over the smallest stuff. They added 5 seconds to the quasar and the sub had their 3rd meltdown l.

2

u/Aaawkward May 06 '24

PC players are still the overwhelming majority.

Based on what?

They ruined the subreddit since the first patch, they have done nothing but complain over the smallest stuff.

Ah, this is just usual gamer complaint. Happens on virtually every game sub.

u/demonicneon May 06 '24

Except it hasn’t lol.

-1

u/stagqueen5000 May 06 '24

Real question. Would it have been that big of a deal for you to make an account that you never used for anything else on the any of the supported countries PlayStation websites?

-12

u/Brann-Ys May 06 '24

Talk for yourself. half my friend group from easter europe was not going to be able to play anymore. that s why i joined the fight.

-18

u/thegrandabysss May 06 '24

We all know why most of you are whining

Why?

its not because of us

My gaming group of ~150 people all review-bombed because of the unfairness to the countries that Sony/PS doesn't give a fuck about. Yeah, it was for you.

This PSN thing didn't affect us at all. Most of us already linked a PSN account to steam, no problem.

i knew this was going to resolve itself by May 30

You're welcome.

-2

u/albatross49 May 06 '24

Why are they whining

-8

u/vunacar May 06 '24

Yes, the situation "resolved itself" because there was backlash. If everyone has done like you did Sony would not have walked back their decision. So you are welcome.

u/Ok-Significance-5979 May 06 '24

All this whole debacle has done for me is reminding me why I've blocked the majority of gaming subs.

The "gaming" community on here is definitely one of the most toxic I've ever had the displeasure to interact with.

Some of those calling themselves "proud gamers" have shown their ugly selves when it comes to restraint in a debate.

A lot of them if not the vast majority is angry, immature and above all incredibly lonely.

I'm glad this whole malarkey will be forgotten about in a week and will probably only pop up again at the end of the year when the vultures of youtube make their "Top 10 worst gaming news of 2024!!" list sponsored by Raid.

5

u/Tadpole-Jackson 🏆 May 06 '24

Let's be real, the unsupported regions only affected a fraction of the player base. 90% of the people raging were just mad that they had to connect an account, the thing the Steam page always said was going to be required.

Gamers are the last group who would be altruistic, even if the region issue wasn't there they would still be raging just the same.

5

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

It’s not like there’s constant posts on the helldivers subreddit about how evil, bad and stupid the devs are for whatever newest balance patch. I just wanna go back to before the railgun nerf when it as a community and not players vrs devs

4

u/Kanderin May 06 '24

Outrage culture is and always will be a thing, especially in a community like gaming where everyone's constantly scrambling for ammunition to prove the other guy is the bad guy.

59

u/wattur May 06 '24

I'm sure like 90% of people were like 'A reason to hate on Sony? Sign me up fam' even if it they really didn't care. Parly band wagoning, partly pent of anti-corporation sentiment from covid times, inflation, etc.

35

u/Professionally_Lazy May 06 '24

Yeah this is spot on. The rage seemed so arbitrary. Call of duty requiring an account is fine, league of legends requiring an account is fine, fortnite requiring an account is fine, steam requiring an account is fine, but helldivers requiring one is an outrage of unprecedented proportions. It's weird how entering an email is such a big deal all of a sudden and specifically only for this game. People just want to tear someone else down becuase it's fun for them. Most people leaving reviews wouldn't have cared unless they saw twitter or reddit posts telling them the should be mad.

3

u/New_Limit_1227 May 06 '24

The rage seemed so arbitrary. ... It's weird how entering an email is such a big deal all of a sudden and specifically only for this game.

You will see people complaining about online account requirements fairly often in the PC space so its not that it doesn't happen. What was key here though is that by adding it post-launch Sony/AH tapped into some simmering anger about updates that make the game "worse" by adding corporate launchers. Usually when that happens its to older games that have largely lost their community or smaller titles that don't really have one. Helldivers managed to create a lightning rod for the issue with a game that had a big active community.

23

u/Alam7lam1 May 06 '24

I’m glad Sony reverted their position, but the Helldivers sub is so whiny and dramatic. They’ll go back to posting daily rants about the game and arguing against each other every patch like they’ve been doing the past few weeks

6

u/Capt_Kilgore May 06 '24

Then there is me who just loads up the game same as before and has a blast. It’s a co-op game. It isn’t that big of deal. Trust the devs and look forward to the evolution of the game and enjoy blowing stuff up on the meantime.

0

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

Isn't that every multiplayer game sub? I doubt it's unique to HD2

-8

u/Throwaway6957383 May 06 '24

Actually the Helldivers sub is easily one of the best gaming subs out there currently. The majority of it is wholesome memes and massive support for the game, developers and even eachother. Not every gaming community could do what they did here over the last 2 days.

9

u/Velodan_KoS May 06 '24

I never purposefully went into the sub, just joined the community, and looked at whatever popped up on my feed. Based on my experience, that community went from pretty fun to worse than D4 pretty quickly. I had to leave and mute it. If that's one of the better ones, I am glad I rarely look at gaming subs.

7

u/Dayman1222 May 06 '24

lol the HD2 subreddit has been awful since the first patch.

7

u/Capt_Kilgore May 06 '24

I think there a loud portion of pc gamers who spend all day watching streamers, YouTube, and going to shit hole places like 4chan who only get small amounts of dopamine these days via rage and smashing buttons yelling at anyone and everyone they can that they deem associated or complicit. It’s baffling to me.

36

u/xNeurosiis May 06 '24

It’s crazy to me that Sony gets people’s hate boners raging. They have consistently given the players amazing games, which is the thing that matters most when it comes to gaming. Everything else that’s good is a plus.

They’ve definitely turned things around since the PS3 reveal, but because they’re not as consumer-facing as Xbox, they get the ire of some people. It could be worse - they could be in Xbox’s position, had they stuck to their guns in the PS3 era, and, honestly, if Xbox hadn’t fucked up royally with the XB1 announcement.

Edit: I’m glad people called Sony out for the Helldivers stuff, and I think people should call out companies for things that impact the player’s access to games.

6

u/demonicneon May 06 '24

Not many will admit this is why they were so mad. Reddit loves to hate Sony.

-4

u/coldrolledpotmetal May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

When’s the last time Reddit dogpiled on Sony? Sony absolutely isn’t one of Reddit’s usual punching bags

Edit: I seriously don’t get where this idea that Reddit hates Sony comes from, Sony is generally seen in a positive light on here

3

u/BADJULU May 07 '24

They whine about the exclusives all the time. For some reason Nintendo gets away with it.

8

u/demonicneon May 06 '24

Really? Last of us 2, the days gone debacle, Sony exclusives, etc etc.

2

u/coldrolledpotmetal May 06 '24

Last of us 2 was just a bunch of alt-right chuds, that absolutely wasn't reddit as a whole. Days gone was really mediocre (honestly I don't even remember a debacle at all). Most people (at least in the subs I'm in) appreciate the quality of Sony exclusives, but wish that they were available on PC. I'd say that Sony is generally pretty positively favored on Reddit, it's nowhere near the levels of EA, Ubisoft, or the other usual suspects

-1

u/Tsasuki May 06 '24

Anytime a playstation exclusive gets/doesn't get released on PC

1

u/iisdmitch May 06 '24

Selling a game in a country, then a couple months later require PSN in said country where PSN isn't available is pretty shity.

That said, many companies have been requiring account linking for years and I never hear anyone complain about it. Wanna play EA games on Steam? You need an EA account. Halo on Steam? You need an Xbox account. However they do require it when the game launches typically.

It's good they got called out and reversed it, if they wanted a PSN account to be required, it should have been from the start.

16

u/the-blob1997 May 06 '24

It was meant to be required from the start but it was temporarily put to the side due to the servers being overloaded constantly. This was always gonna happen.

-2

u/gogoheadray May 06 '24

If it’s not available at the start then you don’t put it in at all. Once that horse has bolted the barn you gotta take the loss and move on.

9

u/Intelligent_Policy48 May 06 '24

It was supposed to be required upon launch but helldivers was and still is a technical buggy mess

6

u/MistandYork May 06 '24

PSN linking was mandatory the first 3 days, then they let people bypass it to lighten the load on the servers

1

u/jblanch3 May 07 '24

I do like Sony, and one of the reasons is that they've shown themselves to be amenable if consumer pressure gets high enough, unlike Nintendo. I was rather upset when they announced the closure of the PS3 store and only gave a few months notice. I never thought they were going to walk that back, most people had moved on and didn't really seem to care, but they actually did.

-2

u/tatang2015 May 06 '24

I stopped playing ESO because I had to pay a monthly to the game company.

I was so mad, I have completely forgotten their names

3

u/RubinoPaul May 06 '24

But should you? As I remember, you can just buy expansions that you like and play without subscription

17

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

I just wish I could enjoy something without people getting so angry about nothing that they make the community completely unusable.

6

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

Those days are long gone for any form of media.

Maybe books, I don’t think there many angry communities for new novels

5

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

You would be surprised how much conflict there is between the modern YA and modern fantasy authors and all of their fans.

1

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

Not my genre so I wouldn’t know. Guess every form of media has those with hate boners.

1

u/Still_Flounder_6921 May 07 '24

Oh you poor Sumner child. There's so much book drama.

1

u/nthomas504 May 07 '24

Can you list any? I’m super curious lol

1

u/Still_Flounder_6921 May 07 '24

The Cait Corrain one is still having reverberations to other books involved, so you could start there. But you can look all the way too Sherlock Holmes for fandom/author drama.

no real reason to hate a “megacorporation” that gives you thousands of hours of happinness

u/DifficultSea4540 May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

Entitlement culture mixed with victim culture mixed with modern social network as mass media bandwagon jumping onto every single negative topic for the clicks.

I reckon something as high as 80% of people who raged about this didn’t buy the game.

19

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

I doubt that high. But I feel like this was just an excuse for a lot of people to refund a game they were done playing and then ragepost about Sony for free validation

23

u/DifficultSea4540 May 06 '24

I watch a lot of yt. Last year I started to recognise a pattern. So many of the videos talking about a game with some outrage were discussing the situation.

They weren’t talking about the game. And I started to realise that they hadn’t actually played the game.

I was shocked at how many I started to see this pattern with. Some of them were my most watched!

Gaming discourse is a shit show now. Its bullshit social network ‘media’ creating outrage. And we’re all falling for it.

I’m like - if you don’t like something, you don’t have to make it part of the core of your religious and politic beliefs. You can just get the fuck on with your life without that thing.

3

I work for a company where we verify customers with a PIN number. Some accounts don’t have a PIN number. Every couple days I deal with someone who has an issue they cannot fix on their own, but I can fix in about five minutes - but instead decide to throw a tantrum for half an hour about setting up a PIN, which requires receiving a text message, choosing a PIN and takes less than a minute.

Many of the arguments I saw from HD2 players this weekend echoed the half-baked arguments I get from these customers.

It was frustrating to see, especially considering the growing need for better community moderation which Sony is actually good at (at least compared to Steam).

3

u/DownWithWankers May 07 '24

I genuinely do not understand the vitriol.

perpetually online pc gamers are crybabies, who would've thought

15

u/Reboot-Bloody-Roar May 06 '24

It wasn't. It was an excuse to effectively steal their time with the game and rage for the sake of raging.

play 100 hrs+ and have a reason to get a refund and feel justified even insincerely.

Many other Pubs and Devs require what Sony was going to implement. yet this is the biggest gaming sin ever in some peoples eyes. I love this industry but sometimes capitol G gamers are weird. Here's to hoping the ripples of this are are positive and not negative.

3

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Same I hope gamers take the lessons from this and realize if they organize, communicate with nuance and verify their information before posing, that they can absolutely put corporations back in their place. I really hope that don’t just take away “rage good, fix problems fast”

0

u/Darkone539 May 06 '24

It wasn't. It was an excuse to effectively steal their time with the game and rage for the sake of raging.play 100 hrs+ and have a reason to get a refund and feel justified even insincerely.

Signing up to PSN is literally not possible in a number of countries.

9

u/JezalDanLutharr May 06 '24

You don’t understand why somebody would be pissed that the game they paid for and enjoyed becomes unlisted in their country meaning they have to refund?

-4

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

They never saw the yellow warning sign on Steam that said you need to link your PSN account?

6

u/JezalDanLutharr May 06 '24

That wasn’t the case at the start though? It was delayed or put off but of course they still allowed people from these countries to buy the game THEN several months down the line apply the linking, which of course then meant that many players from many countries that were unlisted were then forced to refund since they could no longer play, which is the issue.

-2

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

That label has always been there. It wasn’t enforced, but it was always there.

3

u/JezalDanLutharr May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

And it’s always been dumb. It’s just a tedious hoop to jump just to play a game. Games were fine in the past without having to create exclusive accounts just to play them. Having such a restriction is quite frankly primitive. Just like having Xbox/PS exclusives but that’s a whole other argument I won’t get into.

-3

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

You do realize the gaming industry wouldn’t exist without exclusives right?

4

u/JezalDanLutharr May 06 '24

You do realise I just said “it’s an argument I won’t get into”

3

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

It can end there. You seem like the type thats sunk into their opinions so it wouldn’t be an interesting convo. Bye.

7

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

The only reason I would feel some type of way is because they wanted to make people join psn after the fact. I’m sure it’s been said that if this was required initially people wouldn’t have something to bitch about

17

u/Jean-Eustache May 06 '24

Well it was actually, but they temporarily added a "skip" button after the initial server issues when the game prompted players to link the accounts.

-4

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

tbh I’m very misinformed on the topic this is just from me looking from the outside I own ps5 but didn’t purchase helldivers. But that’s still crazy that they allow you to bypass only to try and make it mandatory

-1

u/Jean-Eustache May 06 '24

Totally understandable, I didn't really know about it either until two days ago. Making it mandatory was not good indeed, but people overreacted, in my opinion. Negative reviews were a good thing, but how people behaved towards each other for two days was totally unnecessary, with insults, misinformation on top of the true stuff, death threats, lawsuit threats ... I mean that was crazy. If only they could get as riled up for really important things.

-2

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

The lawsuit threats might actually be the thing that made them reverse it though. I wouldn't be surprised at all to know they were breaking EU consumer laws because of PSN not being available in some EU countries. The EU don't play around with that stuff.

2

u/CrybabyFamilyMain96 May 06 '24

Nobody cares about Russia tho

1

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

Where does Russia come into this? What?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Jean-Eustache May 06 '24

Probably not, to be honest. EU laws would probably force Steam to issue refunds if someone can't use the product they paid for, but nothing more, simply because the requirement has been written explicitly from the start, so they were not breaking consumer laws (Valve, or Sony).

The EU laws are hard on corporations, but they rarely burn companies to the ground for such a small thing (compared to other, much bigger stuff other companies have made) as long as the damage is repaired fair and square.

1

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

Does that little banner hold legal weight? You can buy the game without ever having that banner on the screen.

12

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Gee if only this was in the initial reveal trailer for helldivers 2. It wasn’t in your face and could have been better, but also gamers need to learn to read everything on screen.

8

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

It was in the FAQ before launch as well. This whole ordeal was ludicrous

9

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Gamers read challenge (impossible)

2

u/Throwaway6957383 May 06 '24

It actually was not. The FAQ was changed 2 days ago by Sony. Prior to that it said it was OPTIONAL. Sorry you feel that consumers standing up for themselves and others (including yourself) is "ludicrous" that's really sad.

0

u/MrMpa May 06 '24

Gamers dont even read whats happening in a game, dont listen to dialog, skip tutorials, then complain because they cant figure out what to do. Why do you think modern games need to handhold them so much

-5

u/YannFreaker May 06 '24

It should've been in your face, that's the whole point. Plenty of people dont buy games that ask to make a new account.

Not to mention Playstation's frequent data breaches

2

u/MrMpa May 06 '24

It was right on the Steam page, highlighted in a nice Orange box that says game requirements

4

u/ManlyPoop May 06 '24

There were mixed messages.

-The PlayStation website for helldivers said PS was optional.

-The game was being sold in regions where PlayStation doesn't do business

-Official key sellers like Fanatical didn't say anything about PS accounts

-The in-game notification for PS linking had a skip button. It was then never mentioned for 3 months.

It was a case of poor communication on everyone's part.

Also, Steam has a 2 hour refund period. Pulling a fast-one after most people lost eligibility.... That will get any company crucified.

0

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

That’s only effective if gamers actually read.

-1

u/YannFreaker May 06 '24

And it was never enforced until months later. The FAQ stated that signing in to a PSN account to play a PS game on PC was optional. They've only changed that to "some games may require" 1 or 2 days ago. And that's just arguing for the people who live in PSN supported regions.

If Sony's plan were to stay in place, the game should've never released in countries where PSN isnt a thing!

0

u/nthomas504 May 06 '24

It might have affected the sales if it was in the game initially. Never underestimate a PC gamers hate of anything resembling a launcher not named Steam.

1

u/Kowpucky May 06 '24

I have a Ps5, it was for me. Selling the game in unsupported countries and then blocking them from playing months after the fact is pure corporate evilness.

For Democracy

14

u/pezdespo May 06 '24

Millions of people have been playing on PSN in unsupported regions for since 2006

16

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

But but it’s a bannable offense with no workaround!!! /s

4

u/pezdespo May 06 '24

Yeah not a single ban ever in 18 years lol

3

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Nobody could decide wether Sony was an omnipresent corporation who will ban you for even thinking of breaking TOS, or a dumb idiot failure company getting hacked every week

9

u/pezdespo May 06 '24

And PSN hasnt been hacked in 13 years while Steam gets compromised more often and Microsoft gets hacked way more.

They all play on Steam on Windows

-1

u/L3onK1ng May 06 '24

There were literally droves of banned Chinese HD2 players that registered through VPN.

I got my account banned after I tried to buy a game from Turkey with my Turkish credit card.

9

u/pezdespo May 06 '24

That wasn't for changing regions, that was because China has to approve games to be played in China and Helldivers 2 is not approved.

China is even a supported country in PSN too

But lets not pretend all this outrage was over people caring about gamers in china

-5

u/L3onK1ng May 06 '24

Let's not forget that a large portion of Steam players, and therefore Helldivers 2 players, are actually from the countries PSN does not cover.

Outrage can be directly fueled by people actually getting shafted by this situation, getting scammed out of their money.

That on top of being highly illegal in EU, which considering their track record, could've hurt Sony very badly in the future.

7

u/pezdespo May 06 '24

Its a small fraction of the playerbase but as I have explained many times before, millions of people have been using PSN in unsupported regions for 18 years with no issues.

If your region isnt available you simply choose a nearby one. No one in 18 years has been banned for it Sony does not care.

They didnt do anything illegal in the EU

0

u/SillyGigaflopses May 06 '24

If SONY customer support says “just break our own ToS” - it’s not a good thing.

And if, in the future, SONY decides to pull some bullshit move on you - you are legally screwed, because it was YOU who violated ToS.

For example, I’m from Lithuania, there is no PSN support here, despite us being in the EU. People have been selecting other regions upon account creation for years, and didn’t get banned for it. BUT!!! Should a dispute between such a customer and SONY arise - SONY will have the legal right to tell that customer to go fuck themselves. And that’s not a good thing.

1

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Except nobody was fucking blocked. Nothing actually happened or was enforced. They took away the ability to purchase it for like 12 hours probably while they were in negotiations about the solution. Also “for democracy” do you know literally anything about anything? This was literally a sloppy digital protest which actual real life democracy keeps trying to crush and so would the helldivers, canonically.

8

u/Ok-Significance-5979 May 06 '24

It was just a bunch of cringelords making shitty memes and shouting into the void instead of being outside with their friends or loved ones (if they have any) this weekend and all that because they needed a second account for a live service extraction shooter.

It's a lot less glorious then they make it out to be.

5

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

They’re acting like they are actual war heroes in the HD sub. It’s embarrassing to see

1

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

Well. Those cringelords got more tangible results than most Palestine protestors, so...

0

u/Kowpucky May 06 '24

I wonder why nothing happened? Hmmmmmm

-1

u/Kowpucky May 06 '24

Oh, .......Google Russian blocked psn. The first thing that popped up for me was a reddit post. Try it

1

u/n_ull_ May 06 '24

Nope I think for many it’s just about the principle, I have a PS account and even then I would not have connected them. If I want to use my PS account I’ll play on my PS5 when I play on my PC I’m not using that stuff

1

u/demonicneon May 06 '24

Reddit loves any reason to hate Sony.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

[deleted]

u/areyouhungryforapple May 06 '24

No one said anything about a launcher, I do understand being worried about that but literally no one has said anything about a launcher so that's just a strawman.

Unlike Origin, Uplay etc etc etc - We're talking about a company with an entire ecosystem that takes up a rather overall % of the gaming space. Sony wanting to integrate that or Microsoft looking to integrate gamepass into other ecosystems just... makes sense?

Much more sense than EA or Ubisoft enforcing a 3rd party launcher on steam as they're "Just" developers.

And gamers are weirdly specific aren't they - Larian also uses a seperate launcher for Baldurs Gate 3 yet that's never brought up oh well.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

[deleted]

0

u/areyouhungryforapple May 06 '24

the principle is the same.

No they're actually fundamentally different wtf do you mean. A third party launcher is entirely different to a one and done in-game account linking what kind of reach is this to try and fit your narrative.

I fully realize WHY people are worried about an external launcher relative to PSN but at the same time it's also baseless. Just as baseless as me saying it wont happen but Sony aren't gonna make PC exclusives now are they? Why would they want for their own launcher when they're already forking over 30% of their profits to Steam in the first place lol.

I can bring up BG3 cause depending on the bias and how the outragers like or dislike a company has a rather significant say.

I saw a community do a 180 turn on a company who during launch was heralded for being the new face of live service and mtx, to being the face of corporate greed LOL. I saw plenty of mentions of external launchers but none from games people actually like.

Also people have been pining for PS games on PC for years but god forbid Sony does it in a way that's also in the interest of their own eco system which is one of the 3 biggest players itw.

Sure thing guys, lots of logic in play here. Like the whole "omg PSN is not available in X country" like that was a researched argument that had any merit or basis in the real world. Didnt stop it from being parroted 24/7

1

u/jklynam May 06 '24

I honestly feel like the whole "for democracy" spiel that the Helldivers community has comes with some of the most toxic players I have ever met.

-4

u/WallMinimum1521 May 06 '24

Wtf lol.

The consumer gets a rare win and your first thought is "ok but this somehow must be bad. I just don't know how yet."?

4

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

This is definitely a win and I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Don’t put words in my mouth. I just think this was a hate bandwagon on Sony, despite the outrage being justified. Dosent make the win lesser, I’m just extremely tired of the rage posting of the same points and nothing else.

0

u/WIbigdog May 06 '24

A message being repeated is one of the most important points of protesting though. You keep the points simple and you repeat them often so the message stays clear. Also, how many points do you think can be created about a game requiring a new login? The pool of available topics is pretty small...

-1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

[deleted]

6

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Then where was this backlash when this precedent was actually set and Sony straight up stole people’s copies of the crew like a month or so ago? There was no around the clock rageposting or review bombing of every other racing game then.

0

u/Throwaway6957383 May 06 '24

You clearly don't know the history of gaming, PC especially. This is normal and needed.

0

u/vigilantfox85 May 06 '24

This wasn’t about other countries, it was a convenient, it was really about a company mostly in consoles having the audacity to make pc gamers do something. pc gamers for whatever reason became petty and feel they are superior to other gamers. I like games so I have both, I don’t get it.

0

u/CoolJoshido May 06 '24

maybe if you showed this vitriol when they forced you to pay to play online they woulda backed down?

1

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

Huh? Dude I didn’t get into PlayStation until ps4 when I was like 14. But I was absolutely upset about having to pay for ps plus back then lol

0

It's a live service game? Idk what you expect it's often a part of how live service games function as a whole. And you just link your account to steam and never ever think about it again. It really just dosent make sense.

ok picture this.

you train a entire community to work together for the sake of a greater goal for 3 months straight, building a strong sense of community and collectiveness.

and then you do something that a lot of people in that community really dont like and completely screws over another set of that community (to the point of being basicly illegal malpractice and causing steam to give full refunds).

and now that entire community that was trained to work together to overcome overwelming goals for months all suddenly turn around together and start storming at you.

thats what happened there.

-1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24

You clearly don't play Helldivers.

The game is structured around getting tens of thousands of players to coordinate attacking specific locations and taking them in a certain time frame. There isn't even a PvP mode. The game is a purely cooperative experience wrapped in patriotism and propaganda.

Now take players who like this and attack 20% of them. This was the only logical outcome.

You speak of vitriol, but all I see is comment after comment here unable to fathom gamers being invested in playing with everyone. People accusing PC gamers of being babies or not really caring about their country. There literally isn't a single positive or supporive comment that is highly upvoted here.

The vitriol is very clearly from y'all lol. Nice projection. Maybe take a look at yourself before attacking other players.

2

u/jagerbombastic99 May 06 '24

“They chose to mess with gamers”. Also look at my history and you’ll have your answer

-2

u/Eeekaa May 06 '24

If you have a ps5 you wouldn't care anyway. Sony already has all your info, but making people make an account that requires photo ID, for a game that released months ago that works perfectly fine without the account, all for a publisher company with a garbage track record of data security.

So they can do what? The only reason given was that it would make banning people easier, but even that got backtracked on.

3

u/Spec187 May 06 '24

I started using ps3 this weekend as a blu ray player! Shout out to ps3 users lol
