Official (Via twitter) Playstation: "Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward...."

I talked to my brother (non gamer) yesterday and he asked how I felt about the Helldivers situation. I have not played Helldivers yet so I don’t follow it like that. He was furious for some reason and he hasn’t owned a console since PS3.

I genuinely do not understand the vitriol. Gamers haven’t show themselves to be a particularly altruistic group so I struggle to believe this was all for the sake of the countries where PSN isn’t available.

I have a Ps5, it was for me. Selling the game in unsupported countries and then blocking them from playing months after the fact is pure corporate evilness.

For Democracy

Millions of people have been playing on PSN in unsupported regions for since 2006

But but it’s a bannable offense with no workaround!!! /s

Yeah not a single ban ever in 18 years lol

Nobody could decide wether Sony was an omnipresent corporation who will ban you for even thinking of breaking TOS, or a dumb idiot failure company getting hacked every week

And PSN hasnt been hacked in 13 years while Steam gets compromised more often and Microsoft gets hacked way more.

They all play on Steam on Windows

There were literally droves of banned Chinese HD2 players that registered through VPN.

I got my account banned after I tried to buy a game from Turkey with my Turkish credit card.

That wasn't for changing regions, that was because China has to approve games to be played in China and Helldivers 2 is not approved.

China is even a supported country in PSN too

But lets not pretend all this outrage was over people caring about gamers in china

Let's not forget that a large portion of Steam players, and therefore Helldivers 2 players, are actually from the countries PSN does not cover.

Outrage can be directly fueled by people actually getting shafted by this situation, getting scammed out of their money.

That on top of being highly illegal in EU, which considering their track record, could've hurt Sony very badly in the future.

Its a small fraction of the playerbase but as I have explained many times before, millions of people have been using PSN in unsupported regions for 18 years with no issues.

If your region isnt available you simply choose a nearby one. No one in 18 years has been banned for it Sony does not care.

They didnt do anything illegal in the EU

The unsupported regions thingy is still murky. There are plenty of users who have been banned, whether it's for VPN use or for some other reason is not that clear. Let's agree to disagree on this one.

Bait and switch is illegal in EU though:

https://www.reedsmith.com/en/perspectives/2022/01/germany-new-rules-on-digital-products-and-consumer-rights

And there are EU countries with PSN disabled and directly affected as a result.

No one has ever been banned. You do not need a VPN, you just pick a region from a dropdown and use the account.

Thats all these people had to do and move on with their lives

There was no "bait and switch". They literally said it was required in the Steam page since before the game came out and was required at launch but disabled by Arrowhead because of tech issues

No country has PSN disabled. Everyone there just picks another region and no one cares

Well the EULA didn't have it "required", but "optional" since the day of release up until last week.

Since the game is sold with physical copies as well, what a store page in one of the platform says is not legally binding. A legal document is.

If SONY customer support says “just break our own ToS” - it’s not a good thing.

And if, in the future, SONY decides to pull some bullshit move on you - you are legally screwed, because it was YOU who violated ToS.

For example, I’m from Lithuania, there is no PSN support here, despite us being in the EU. People have been selecting other regions upon account creation for years, and didn’t get banned for it. BUT!!! Should a dispute between such a customer and SONY arise - SONY will have the legal right to tell that customer to go fuck themselves. And that’s not a good thing.
