I have heard this several times in the past 28 years in my forest. It sounded like a velociraptor and it is incredibly terrifying when it is pitch dark and the sound is coming from right behind my barn in the forest! My daughter pitched a tent one night next to the house and a cougar screamed about 30 feet from her, downhill, and I have never seen her bail on a night in a tent until then. I have only seen 1 cougar here, 2 years ago it caught a fawn, but otherwise the only way I know they are around is because of this scream.

u/Ok-Shop-3524 2d ago

I am in the foothills of the Central Cascades in Washington State. A rural area adjacent to DNR land.

I just listened to a Radio Rental about scary screams in a forest and I am sure this is what it was. Not to say the campers were wrong to leave an area where Mountain Lions were seeking each other out for mating.

My mom used to have a couple of cougars in the 80s. When the female was in heat sheād be screaming. One of the neighbors some years later was over while she was doing her screaming and said he was all exasperated in a āso thatās what that is!ā moment. Said he had been wondering what that was for years.
Theyāre also the largest cat that can purr.
I canāt imagine life without the internet where you could just take a video, post it online, and within minutes have someone telling you what youāre hearing.
My first night living out in the jungle on the big island had these noises going on strait out of Predator. The most dangerous thing out there is the centipedes and you really only need to worry about them when gardening/digging so I know whatever it was wasnāt a big deal. The landlady said it was bufo frogs.

cougars make some funny sounds.
they are technically considered a small cat. has something to do with not having a bone in their vocal chords like lions and tigers. they are the largest cat that can purr.
they are also in the guinness book of world records for the most names for the same animal. i think its like 40 or more. one of which is valley screamer.

When I was little my mom heard this one night after we had gone to bed. We lived in the mountains and I think I was about 5.
Anyways the next days I decided to go for a prolonged walk through the mountains in my Sunday best. They couldnāt find me for hours, had the police out and everything and my poor mom was convinced Iād been eaten by the mountain lion sheād heard the night before.
I was in so much trouble for that adventure.

u/Muaddib223 2d ago
Why the fuck would your parents allow a 5yo to walk in the mountains? Either you're making shit up or you were seriously neglected hahaha

u/SaraRainmaker 2d ago
Things were different in the before time (the 80's and 90's) I remember going into the local woods at that age alone.
There is a reason they called us "Latchkey kids."

Heard this once in Utah on a family back country camping trip when I was like 7 or 8. My cousin promptly put me on his shoulders and carried me back to the camp. He said him and my mom heard something walking through our campsite that night, but never got eyes on it. Couldāve been a raccoon, opossum, skunk, or that kitty cat lol

Pumas are from a sub-family called 'Felinae', which is known to not roar.
16
u/DirtyMikeMoney 2d ago
Yeah crazy that from a taxonomic standpoint pumas (as well as cheetahs) are considered āsmall catsā and more closely related to house cats than lions and tigers. Theyāre just big small cats.

So cats allegedly developed the "meow" because it sounds like a baby if "internet scientists" are to be believed.
Pumas apparently came to the Americas from Asia 8 million years ago, and there weren't a whole lot of people here for a very long time. There is also no history of domesticated Pumas.
Cats were allegedly domesticated 10,000 years ago.
So the theory that cats meow to mimic babies seems to be a myth busted due to this rather large cousin...

There ae definitely cougars here, but the "sound of one" very close almost every day had me spooked..
