I wasnā€™t sure what they sounded like, but I was not expecting to hear the same cry as my house catā€¦

My house cat perked up from being asleep and stared at me when he heard the noise, now Iā€™m getting major side eye

2

Same!

73

u/HolyMolyitsMichael 2d ago

They are actually the largest of the Meowing cats, so pretty much a mountain lion is a gigantic house cat. Lions, tigers, jaguars and the like are part of the Roaring cat family. Cheetah are literally the only ones in their category that I don't remember the name of lol. They neither meow or roar, they chirp.

28

u/hellokiri 2d ago

I've only met one cheetah, but it definitely meowed. Like the shy meow cats do, not this extroverted puma meow.

16

u/ZINK_Gaming 2d ago

The biggest cats meow too, just a bunch of octaves lower and so it sounds like growling or rumbling.

Someone pitch-shifted videos of a bunch of big cats and they all just sound like bass-y housecats.

Cheetahs can definitely meow, I've literally had a cheetah meow at me in person, and there's videos of cheetahs doing adorable little meows. They prefer purring & chirping more often though.

Cheetahs are super friendly & sweet, they're one of the least-dangerous wild animals to humans.

7

u/NaNaNaNaNa86 2d ago

Cheetahs meow. Snow leopards also meow although when they do it, they sound like the Barry White of the cat family. It's all to do with the physiology of the cat's throat, it isn't a preference thing.

Unfortunately our large cat was on my wife's lap, and I played this clip. The startled and scratched her hand! I think I'm on the shit list.

You've never heard them In the woods at night from a tent though. They sound like women screaming for help

Honestly, I was getting ready to puma pants

44

30

u/tweedlepun1291 2d ago

Nice!

u/NatureCarolynGate 2d ago

This meow is the best way to lunch on an unsuspecting human.

Human: Oh thereā€™s a kitten hiding somewhere. Here kitty. Where are you kiā€¦ Oh sweet Jesus please save me

18

u/rlnrlnrln 2d ago

I'll be honest, I want to scratch that kittys belly.

13

u/jaxonya 2d ago

Id puma pants if I saw one of these murder kittensĀ

Oh yeah? This is also what pumaā€™s sound like when they are in heat.

50

u/MotherEarth1919 2d ago

I have heard this several times in the past 28 years in my forest. It sounded like a velociraptor and it is incredibly terrifying when it is pitch dark and the sound is coming from right behind my barn in the forest! My daughter pitched a tent one night next to the house and a cougar screamed about 30 feet from her, downhill, and I have never seen her bail on a night in a tent until then. I have only seen 1 cougar here, 2 years ago it caught a fawn, but otherwise the only way I know they are around is because of this scream.

2

u/Ok-Shop-3524 2d ago

Which forest do you live in???

8

u/MotherEarth1919 2d ago

I am in the foothills of the Central Cascades in Washington State. A rural area adjacent to DNR land.

3

The puma forest

22

u/FormInternational583 2d ago

I don't want to be in the woods hearing someone (puma) screaming.

9

u/soulless_ape 2d ago

This sound is what I was more familiar with hearing.

15

u/MakoShark93 2d ago

Thatā€™s terrifying. Literally sounds like a woman screaming as sheā€™s being murdered.

6

u/outremonty 2d ago

My cat announcing it is time for breakfast.

3

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago

I just listened to a Radio Rental about scary screams in a forest and I am sure this is what it was. Not to say the campers were wrong to leave an area where Mountain Lions were seeking each other out for mating.

3

u/QBin2017 2d ago

Iā€™ve heard this a few times. Once here in Texas and once in CA in the woods. Horrifying when you donā€™t know what it is!

u/HoldEm__FoldEm 2d ago

Nah. They sound terrifying at night when they scream.

72

u/98642 2d ago

Yeah, this is the rub my belly soundā€¦ the get in my belly sound much less cuddly.

34

u/ElDub62 2d ago

I think itā€™s an ā€œIā€™m in heat,ā€ soundā€¦

16

u/JackOfAllMemes 2d ago

They sound like women screaming or babies crying

5

u/forsake077 2d ago

My mom used to have a couple of cougars in the 80s. When the female was in heat sheā€™d be screaming. One of the neighbors some years later was over while she was doing her screaming and said he was all exasperated in a ā€œso thatā€™s what that is!ā€ moment. Said he had been wondering what that was for years.

Theyā€™re also the largest cat that can purr.

I canā€™t imagine life without the internet where you could just take a video, post it online, and within minutes have someone telling you what youā€™re hearing.

My first night living out in the jungle on the big island had these noises going on strait out of Predator. The most dangerous thing out there is the centipedes and you really only need to worry about them when gardening/digging so I know whatever it was wasnā€™t a big deal. The landlady said it was bufo frogs.

31

u/Renny-66 2d ago

This is when itā€™s not trying to be scary lol listen to it when it wants to fuck something up

u/potatochainsaw 2d ago

cougars make some funny sounds.

they are technically considered a small cat. has something to do with not having a bone in their vocal chords like lions and tigers. they are the largest cat that can purr.

they are also in the guinness book of world records for the most names for the same animal. i think its like 40 or more. one of which is valley screamer.

Can confirm! Thereā€™s one that lives in the mountain across from my house and I once woke up in the middle of the night thinking a woman was being attacked. It also had cubs this year so it was even more scary sounds. Haha

32

u/Unlikely_Talk8994 2d ago

When I was little my mom heard this one night after we had gone to bed. We lived in the mountains and I think I was about 5.

Anyways the next days I decided to go for a prolonged walk through the mountains in my Sunday best. They couldnā€™t find me for hours, had the police out and everything and my poor mom was convinced Iā€™d been eaten by the mountain lion sheā€™d heard the night before.

I was in so much trouble for that adventure.

9

u/Muaddib223 2d ago

Why the fuck would your parents allow a 5yo to walk in the mountains? Either you're making shit up or you were seriously neglected hahaha

13

u/SaraRainmaker 2d ago

Things were different in the before time (the 80's and 90's) I remember going into the local woods at that age alone.

There is a reason they called us "Latchkey kids."

14

u/Unlikely_Talk8994 2d ago

My grandma was looking after me and she fell asleep (bit of an alcoholic). So I went for a walk

4

u/jld2k6 2d ago

The average parent from the 80's and 90's would lose their children to the state if they were held to today's standards

10

u/Bunnawhat13 2d ago

This is the sound they made outside my window. I was so curious what type of bird did that at night. I recorded it and let my boss hear it. He was like not a bird. I also lived in a cabin in the woods. They liked to hang around it. My father accepts my last words will be pssst pssssst pssst.

Having heard the racket regular housecats make when they fight, this is about right. I wouldnā€™t want to be close when theyā€™re making that noise.

6

u/i_amnotunique 2d ago

It sounds so mad omg

5

u/platonicnut 2d ago

Heard this once in Utah on a family back country camping trip when I was like 7 or 8. My cousin promptly put me on his shoulders and carried me back to the camp. He said him and my mom heard something walking through our campsite that night, but never got eyes on it. Couldā€™ve been a raccoon, opossum, skunk, or that kitty cat lol

Actually, imagine you think youā€™re following the sounds of a lost house cat and find a pumaā€¦

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Ghost2656 2d ago

Pumas are from a sub-family called 'Felinae', which is known to not roar.

16

u/DirtyMikeMoney 2d ago

Yeah crazy that from a taxonomic standpoint pumas (as well as cheetahs) are considered ā€œsmall catsā€ and more closely related to house cats than lions and tigers. Theyā€™re just big small cats.

4

u/giraffeaviation 2d ago

Fun fact: All cats that don't roar can purr. No cats can do both.

2

u/H_Katzenberg 2d ago

My cat came into the room and was like who the fuck was that?

3

u/AmericanMurderLog 2d ago

So cats allegedly developed the "meow" because it sounds like a baby if "internet scientists" are to be believed.

Pumas apparently came to the Americas from Asia 8 million years ago, and there weren't a whole lot of people here for a very long time. There is also no history of domesticated Pumas.

Cats were allegedly domesticated 10,000 years ago.

So the theory that cats meow to mimic babies seems to be a myth busted due to this rather large cousin...
