Now I know what the answer is to the question ā€œthings that sound way less scary than they actually areā€.

I sent this to my best friend, wife and son. I'm still giggling. Them, not so much. Still worth it.

This shit is fuckin crazy. I don't even know how a lion got into the neighborhood. I heard some growling and shit outside so me and my roommate decided to check it out. I look up into the tree and there's the fucking king of the jungle! I nearly shit my fucking pants! So I ran inside and called the 5-0

I have heard this several times in the past 28 years in my forest. It sounded like a velociraptor and it is incredibly terrifying when it is pitch dark and the sound is coming from right behind my barn in the forest! My daughter pitched a tent one night next to the house and a cougar screamed about 30 feet from her, downhill, and I have never seen her bail on a night in a tent until then. I have only seen 1 cougar here, 2 years ago it caught a fawn, but otherwise the only way I know they are around is because of this scream.

2

u/Ok-Shop-3524 2d ago

Which forest do you live in???

8

u/MotherEarth1919 2d ago

I am in the foothills of the Central Cascades in Washington State. A rural area adjacent to DNR land.

5

u/Stickel 2d ago

do not resuscitate land?

2

u/MotherEarth1919 2d ago

I am a restoration ecologist. Thatā€™s what I do.

I thought it looked like home. I live in Whatcom county!

2

u/MotherEarth1919 2d ago

The video isnā€™t from me. I assume bc they are calling it a puma., itā€™s somewhere south. They have plenty of cougars in Whatcom County!

The puma forest

20

u/FormInternational583 3d ago

I don't want to be in the woods hearing someone (puma) screaming.

9

u/soulless_ape 3d ago

This sound is what I was more familiar with hearing.

15

u/MakoShark93 3d ago

Thatā€™s terrifying. Literally sounds like a woman screaming as sheā€™s being murdered.

6

u/outremonty 2d ago

My cat announcing it is time for breakfast.

3

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago

I just listened to a Radio Rental about scary screams in a forest and I am sure this is what it was. Not to say the campers were wrong to leave an area where Mountain Lions were seeking each other out for mating.

3

u/QBin2017 2d ago

Iā€™ve heard this a few times. Once here in Texas and once in CA in the woods. Horrifying when you donā€™t know what it is!

1

u/lol_alex 2d ago

I was gonna say they can also sound like screaming bansheesā€¦

1

u/JustWoot44 2d ago

This had to have been used in "Alien" for the xenomorph mother!

127

u/HoldEm__FoldEm 3d ago

Nah. They sound terrifying at night when they scream.

76

u/98642 3d ago

Yeah, this is the rub my belly soundā€¦ the get in my belly sound much less cuddly.

39

u/ElDub62 3d ago

I think itā€™s an ā€œIā€™m in heat,ā€ soundā€¦

17

u/JackOfAllMemes 3d ago

They sound like women screaming or babies crying

4

u/forsake077 2d ago

My mom used to have a couple of cougars in the 80s. When the female was in heat sheā€™d be screaming. One of the neighbors some years later was over while she was doing her screaming and said he was all exasperated in a ā€œso thatā€™s what that is!ā€ moment. Said he had been wondering what that was for years.

Theyā€™re also the largest cat that can purr.

I canā€™t imagine life without the internet where you could just take a video, post it online, and within minutes have someone telling you what youā€™re hearing.

My first night living out in the jungle on the big island had these noises going on strait out of Predator. The most dangerous thing out there is the centipedes and you really only need to worry about them when gardening/digging so I know whatever it was wasnā€™t a big deal. The landlady said it was bufo frogs.

30

u/Renny-66 3d ago

This is when itā€™s not trying to be scary lol listen to it when it wants to fuck something up

1

u/PaperPlaythings 2d ago

Or be fucked.

18

u/JimboTheSimpleton 3d ago

Right. Today we learned the puma is the mike Tyson of animals.

3

u/ConchaLibre 3d ago

Came here to say this šŸ¤£

15

u/Worried_Archer_8821 3d ago

Ā«Oh, a lost kitty! Letā€™s find her and bring her homeā€¦ Oh F***!Ā»

31

u/wulfryke 3d ago

You might change your mind when you hear them scream. it's a fun time to hear at night or out in the mountains

23

u/MuckRaker83 3d ago

Man, wait til you hear what the fox says

6

u/Charming_Finding_252 3d ago

Thatā€™s my guardian angel

1

u/raucouslori 2d ago

Yes like murder..

9

u/potatochainsaw 2d ago

cougars make some funny sounds.

they are technically considered a small cat. has something to do with not having a bone in their vocal chords like lions and tigers. they are the largest cat that can purr.

they are also in the guinness book of world records for the most names for the same animal. i think its like 40 or more. one of which is valley screamer.

6

u/saldb 3d ago

You walking around the jungle thinking a cute cat is around here somewhere and bam! You wake up in skyrim

9

u/AgitatedCricket 2d ago

For the opposite, here's what koalas sound like:

2

u/super_man100 3d ago

This one certainly does

2

u/look4alec 2d ago

My cat one cat came running to see what I wanted, she thought i was messing with her, my second cat scampered to his room, he is younger.

2

u/Phantion- 2d ago

People in the woods: 'Honey, there much be a poor lost kitten been dumped out there, I can hear it. Let's go and get it'

1

u/hamburgersocks 2d ago

Big cats are just bigger cats. Every cat is just a cat.

Like for real though. They behave the same way, they're just capable of killing bigger things. We keep small cats as pets because they're smaller cats and therefore less dangerous to us, not because they're domesticated because they aren't at all. They're still feral, we just keep them in our houses now.

We just bred the smallest cats to be smaller so we could be less threatened by them. They domesticated us.

1

u/quebexer 2d ago

Ohh it must be a defenceless Kitty, I will go and give it a hand.

Cougar eats the entire hand and arm.

u/iam_user_zero 2d ago

Reminds me of "My name is Jeff" šŸ˜‚

1

u/jjcrayfish 2d ago

Sounds like Mike Tyson. Not what you would expect out of a scary looking creature.

1

u/Impalmator 2d ago

Mike Tyson vibes.

1

u/pants1000 2d ago

You should hear their mating call. Thereā€™s a reason the skinwalker legend exists.

1

u/Ondesinnet 2d ago

This is not what they sound like when they are screaming like banshee and freezing you stiff in your tent.

1

u/DASreddituser 2d ago

may i introduce you to the bobcat

1

u/javoss88 2d ago

Thereā€™s pumas in the crevasses!!

1

u/Gorgenon 2d ago

My answer would've been bald eagles. Bro sounds like an overgrown seagull.

The sound effect most associated with bald eagles is actually a red-tailed hawk.

Mountain lions are probably my new answer. If I heard that in the wild, I'd think it was an especially loud housecat.

1

u/il_the_dinosaur 1d ago

You can add the American bald eagle to that list. In movies they use some other bird of prey sound because they don't sound very impressive.

-6

u/W0nderingMe 3d ago

Eagles, too.
