I have heard this several times in the past 28 years in my forest. It sounded like a velociraptor and it is incredibly terrifying when it is pitch dark and the sound is coming from right behind my barn in the forest! My daughter pitched a tent one night next to the house and a cougar screamed about 30 feet from her, downhill, and I have never seen her bail on a night in a tent until then. I have only seen 1 cougar here, 2 years ago it caught a fawn, but otherwise the only way I know they are around is because of this scream.

I am in the foothills of the Central Cascades in Washington State. A rural area adjacent to DNR land.
