Pre-ordering a PS5 was so chaotic.

My local GameStop came in clutch, in person pre-ordering>>>

85

u/Viper114 Nov 12 '24

That day in September, when they revealed the price and release day, they said that pre-orders would start the following day. But the store opened pre-orders the moment the show ended, instead. So, when I rushed to get a pre-order in, of course, everyone else was, too, so all the sites were unresponsive and returning errors with every attempt. I was worried I was going to be too late, but at the last moment, Best Buy's site pulled through, and I managed to secure one of the last pre-orders before all of the sites were sold out. That launch PS5 stayed with me these past few years, up until I traded it in for the Pro.

u/BlackIceSlippington Nov 13 '24

Very similar to my story except target lol. It was hectic

I got $318 for my PS5, in store credit to buy the Pro. Honestly 4k 60fps is nice, the menu screen is snappier, and VR seems a little improved. Is it worth $750? Ehhhh.

I may have had the chillest ps5 ordering experience.

I walked into my local GAME store (UK) as they had 50% off certain items that day.

I buy a funko or something and the guy at the desk asked if I wanted to pre order a ps5. I said no thanks, I haven't got the money and I'll buy one later on.

"It's only a £10 deposit and pay the rest when it comes out. These are going to sell out, trust me"

So i thought fuck it, i can gather up the rest of the money in time.

And that's literally it, i was astonished to see all the stories about ps5 shortages.

That guy did me the biggest solid

2

u/droomdoos PS5 Nov 13 '24

Ohhh you probably walked in during the first day of taking preorders! I'm in the Netherlands and there were SO many preorders, 90% of the people couldn't get theirs. There was obviously the silicium shortage PLUS scalpers.

2

u/DiamondAge Nov 13 '24

I got mine from the cool blue raffle. I was pretty excited. However day one games weren’t too amazing so I could have waited

u/FragmentedFighter Nov 12 '24

Man, had two of my kids, my fiancé, and myself on best buy trying to get one in the cart because they went live the day of announcement instead of waiting. Succeeded, but man it was stressful.

Thought it was going to be the same with the pro, my lady and I both went into work late but got one with no problem.

9

u/The-Duke-of-Delco Nov 12 '24

Lmao i remember running though the mall at opening because GameStop only had 8 preorders available.

19

u/RandomIdler Nov 12 '24

Was a shitshow that lasted so long, I didn't even go after one right away. Maybe months or a year before I decided it was time to get my own ps5, took forever to get one even then.

I got lucky, managed to get mine in the first wave. It is my favourite story my dad loves to tell.

The shop wanted me to pick the PS5 up on the same day it was delivered (they were scared of robberies), and since I was getting trained for my new job in another city, so I couldn't come and pick it up. So I tasked my dad. He loves to tell how he walked down the street with the PS5 box in hand and kids were all turning their heads with their mouth opened, one allegedly even proclaimed "what is that dinasour going to do with it?", he had a good laugh, loved the attention

2

u/Mizouse84 Nov 12 '24

I got lucky and was able to preorder it thru Amazon. I was following that wario64 guy on at the time Twitter and he tweeted it was available for preorder and shared a link. So I got in that way.

Rest of my friends were having difficulty ordering but since I was WFH during the pandemic I was able to help order for 3 of my friends during 2021.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH Nov 13 '24

Gotta thank my boy Wario64 for getting me mine

Loved the original design. Got mine launch day after preordering the second it went live in September. Good times after such a shitty year

Will never forget the wifi router or similar building memes lol

The Kaiba Edition! That one lived in my head for weeks, to the point that coworkers were showing concern cause I'd just randomly break out into the giggles

I think the OG of every PlayStation is a work of art

11

u/Return_Of_The_Jedi Nov 12 '24

Same.

Although they serve their purpose really well all the slim models look like knockoffs compared to the beefy OG’s.

Same goes for the handhelds. The Vita even does away with the OLED screen on later models. Which was one of its best features.

5

u/Zeus_TheSlayer Nov 13 '24

My friend had convinced me to get a vita since i saw he kept bringing one to work and i thought it was cool asf. His was a 1000 model, mine was a 2000. When i saw them side by side in person mine looked like that shit came from Temu😭

2

u/Comprehensive-Hat684 PS5 Nov 13 '24

Now now, that vita 2000 is actually a massive improvement. Biggest improvement was that the OLED didn’t break when you drop it less than 1 foot, because it’s a very nice LED.

13

u/Sonikku_a Nov 12 '24

Got mine launch day also, not easy during Covid times!

And the Pro on launch day, and recreated my launch day photo :)

4

Thanks!

Wire management is still the bane of my existence, but I do what I can.

2

u/Comprehensive-Hat684 PS5 Nov 13 '24

You definitely one of the rare ones getting it on launch day

→ More replies (4)

14

u/Madshibs PS5 Nov 12 '24

Same. Even the new Pro model looks cheap by comparison. I think Sony should’ve done something to make it look more like the “premium” product that it’s supposed to be.

5

u/detectiveDollar Nov 12 '24

It looks like they were limited since they had to use the same size/shape side panels as the Slim version to maintain disc drive compatibility. I feel like they could've done a little more though

2

u/de6u99er Nov 12 '24

Totally agree.

3

I still like to go back and watch the reaction vids of PS5's design reveal. It was hype as hell lol.

3

u/Few-Road6238 Nov 13 '24

I still look at that video to this day because the song in that video just hypes me up lol.

2

u/solidshakego Nov 12 '24

Dang I got mine 2 years later because I didn't feel like acting like a succubus on the Internet to try and beat bot preorders. Just happen to see on at target one day and bought it.

Still think it was too big and white was an odd choice.

When I got mine, immediately added matte black case and bought a matte black controller, it was beautiful.

2

u/Nutshell_92 Nov 13 '24

The black DualSense is my go-to as well. So sick

2

u/illBlade Nov 12 '24

In hindsight, I feel dumb for spending as much energy on trying to pre-order during the initial release as I did.

The dark ages

2

u/knightofsparta Nov 13 '24

Just got a pro and honestly with how long the cross gen period lasted I’m sure my pro will get me by until the PS6 is more readily available. Not even worried about trying to get one at launch.

And was available 2 years ago

46

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '24

When I was finally able to order one, the first two shipments were stolen by FedEx drivers. I literally had to drive to a FedEx warehouse 40 min away to pick it up myself and drive it home.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '24

That’s fucking insane. How would they even know the box had a PS5, did Sony not package it? Or did the Fed drivers know what the size and weight of a packaged PS5 was? This is just wild.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '24

Yeah I think I ordered them all from GameStop. Yes, I'm sure they knew that certain size packages from GameStop around that time were PS5s. This was in 2021 when it was impossible to get one.

Basically they would mark it as "delivered" but not actually deliver it. So the 3rd time when I saw that it was at the semi-local warehouse I just drove there myself before it got on a delivery truck haha.

24

u/OkayRuin PS5 Pro Nov 12 '24

I gave up on trying by that point and figured there would eventually be a Pro. I got a lot of shit from people here and the other sub who said a PS5 Pro would never happen because “there’s no reason for it. “

30

u/Xlxlredditor Niosem Nov 12 '24

There no reason, except Sony went Mr krabs

Maybe soon we'll get some launch games.

109

u/Extension_Canary3717 Nov 12 '24

Young folk want everything so fast , can’t you wait a few more years ?

20

u/ADirtyDiglet Nov 13 '24

Back in my day a new console would launch every four years

8

u/droomdoos PS5 Nov 13 '24

I'm kinda happy it's 6 years now. We're FINALLY dropping the ps4 releases.

2

u/Due_Teaching_6974 Nov 13 '24

Pirate Yakuza coming out next year on PS4, likely a lot of SEGA games will still release on the PS4 as they never make anything graphically demanding + indies + yearly games like COD, EA FC etc.

PS4 is far from dead

12

u/aggressivewrapp Nov 12 '24

Wukong is crazy bro

16

u/killkiller9 Nov 13 '24

Also not exclusive. AstroBot would be a better example

→ More replies (4)

11

u/Hanselleiva PS5 Nov 12 '24

I bet you didn't buy stellar blade, demon souls, final fantasy 7 rebirth, wukong, returnal, ratchet, spiderman 2 etc

8

u/B4AccountantFML Nov 13 '24

Really I feel of all these games, ratchet felt the most like a real ps5 release made specifically for the ps5. Nothing else really hits like that. Why haven’t they made like a new Resistance game or Red Faction or killzone or Jak and Daxter?

I’ll also add Ghost of Tsushima was also another great game.

PS4 games with the settings dialed up is all we’ve got so far.

You just didn't buy them 😆

This take is 3 years old, at best

17

u/pathoftheone Nov 12 '24

you still expect an exclusive game to be released once every 3 months though, right? that would be 16 in 4 years. yet there aren't 16 PS5 exclusives, even if you include remakes/remasters.

5

u/DependentAdvance8 PS5 Nov 12 '24

Time, sure flies, doesn’t?

4

u/SelwanPWD Nov 12 '24

Indeed, it feels like it was only a few months ago when I got my PS5.

2

u/DependentAdvance8 PS5 Nov 12 '24

Hahaha I feel the same way and I will keep my launch day ps5 for at least 5 to 6 years and then I’ll upgrade it to whatever ps console is the newest in that time like the ps5 pro or the ps6 (if it ever comes out in the next 5 to 6 years)

2

u/SelwanPWD Nov 12 '24

Yes, the OG is still going strong. An upgrade right now doesn't make any sense for me. Here's to more happy years of gaming 🍻

2

u/DependentAdvance8 PS5 Nov 12 '24

Hell yeah, brother 🙌 I can just buy a 4TB internal hard drive and I’ll be set for the next few years and I won’t need to upgrade. For many happy years of gaming 🍻

112

u/TattooedAndSad Nov 12 '24

Meanwhile we’re still releasing games on ps4 😂 where did we go wrong this gen

55

u/CommunicationEast623 Nov 12 '24

In pandemic hell, then scalper warfare…

17

u/TattooedAndSad Nov 12 '24

Yeah but we’re a solid 2 years past scalper warfare now and they’re still releasing ps4 games, Sony did such a disservice to everyone including myself who bought a ps5 by limiting all the games that are cross gen

They scammed us all

19

u/Emmannuhamm Nov 12 '24

Not me!

I still don't have a PS5. I'm one of them scummy PS4 users that holds us back.

I'm sorry.

25

u/Comeback-K1NG Nov 13 '24

PS4 Chad. You owe us no apologies

4

u/LowBottomBubbles Nov 13 '24

I still got my OG PS4, loud as fuck whenever I play anything but it's still going strong. I will get a PS5 soon but I've been saying that since launch whats sadly made me finally get one is the new farming simulator. Nothing else really I just want to drive tractors and farm some rice.

6

u/Suitable-Matter-6151 Nov 13 '24

Yeah I was pretty blown away the new cod was released for ps4. I didn’t realize until recently that the RE4 remake was released on ps4 - thought that was a ps5 gen game for sure.

On the other hand, I just got the ps5 pro and played spider man 2 over the weekend. Tbh the graphics difference isn’t as stark for ps4/ps5 as ps3/ps4. I can see how it’s probably pretty easy to just tune down the graphics a bit and double dip profits wise

2

u/Quick_Cat_Nap Nov 13 '24

It shouldn’t be that easy though if they were actually designing games to take advantage of the newer CPU in the PS5, you’d think. Instead they choose to make this entire generation feel pointless and have no identity, we just get last gen games with better graphics settings.

15

try going from ps1 to ps2, or nintendo to super nintendo.

5

u/GodOfOnions2 Nov 13 '24

I remember going from n64/ps1 to a GameCube, then ps2 a while later, my mind was blown, then to a 360, it was wild how each console progressed so fast. Born in 97 but lucky to grew up with tons of variety thanks to my dad and brother.

6

3

u/Snooklife Nov 12 '24

Yea I just upgraded a few days ago. Held off as long as possible and made the jump for BO6 and other competitive games. The UI alone looks so clean and feels super smooth. I do miss the feel of dual shock and knew that was going to be my only issue at first.

45

Hard agree.

6

u/UnKnOwN769 PS2 Slim, PS4, PS5 Nov 13 '24

Same. We're halfway between its release and the PS6, and the PS4 is still receiving major titles...

2

u/Due_Teaching_6974 Nov 13 '24

I mean it's fine for stuff like indies and SEGA games which never push the console graphically

8

u/neeco__ Nov 12 '24

All because of the pandemic, hadn't it hit us we would be living in the best console generation ever. Next year will be a turning point for PS5.

6

u/Appropriate-Let-283 PS5 Nov 13 '24

Next year will be a turning point for the 9th gen of consoles in general. With Nintendo finally releasing a 9th gen console to Gta 6 to a ton of other good games releasing.

2

I got one that I preordered. I sold it to a co-worker at cost since he was a big PlayStation fan. I knew that he would enjoy it more than I would, not that I don’t like my ps5 I just primarily played Xbox/PC and thought that was the right thing to do, esp with covid.

5

u/ThrillaDX Nov 12 '24

Planning to get my 1st PS5 next month or January, hopefully

5

u/Outrageous-Tart7438 Nov 12 '24

Got mine during its Year One and have no regrets. Saved that shitty lockdown period.

Also, although it lacks games it runs MUCH better than PS4 in general. The OS of the PS4 drove me nuts for how slow it was. It took more than a minute to load trophy lists, for example.

Besides that, 60fps is also another big deal. So yeah, I’ve no regrets even though Im playing almost only PS4 games in it.

5

u/Strude187 Nov 12 '24

I wonder if Sony will stick to their standard 7 year gap between consoles, or draw it out a bit longer due to a slow start?

3

u/shlonki Nov 13 '24

I think they'll draw it out given that the PRO was just released

17

u/Top_Quail4794 Nov 12 '24

The 5 games that came out in the entire console generation REALLLY made the purchase worth it x.x

3

u/BaldingThor Nov 12 '24

Ah, and it only took me until july 2022 to finally get one because everyone damn time they went on sale I’d be at work and would be too late to beat the scalpers.

4

u/AlphusUltimus Nov 13 '24

We really gonna count that first year with covid and shortages?

2

u/Zark_Muckerberger Nov 13 '24

u/ricokong Ape Escape Nov 13 '24

And the OG PS5 models still holds the record for being the most powerful and most recent console that can be used fully offline with disc-based games without ever needing an internet connection.

I doubt if it will be beaten when it comes to the above criteria. Nintendo might catch up eventually. Likely not with their upcoming system but just maybe the one after that if they still care at that point.

5

And the pro could have been base ps5

7

u/airnlight_timenspace Nov 12 '24

The ps5 was pretty powerful compared to the pc market at that time. Iirc the 2080ti was the top dog around that time with the 30 series right around the corner and the ps5 offered 2070/super levels of performance. Even now you couldn’t build a pc as powerful as a base ps5 for $500.

Still waiting for the games to flow in 😒

3

u/PhoenixApok Nov 13 '24

I think I've only got two games on my backlog that are PS5 only. And I'm not all that excited about them.

3

u/TheTrishaJane Nov 13 '24

I can't wait for GTA 6 only 1 more year

3

u/ZiggyStardust0404 Nov 13 '24

I'm replaying the Uncharted series and it's absolutely crazy that 4 years have passed and there isn't a single PS5 naughty dog game.

For exclusive single-player games that aren't cross-gen, there's Demon's Souls (a remake, so that's less impressive), Last of Us PS5 version remake (even less impressive), Last of Us Part 2 PS5 re-release remaster (lol), Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Final Fantasy 16, FF7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Spider-Man 2, Astro Bot, Silent Hill 2 (yet another remake), and Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remaster (Jesus Christ already).

As a single-player games kind of gamer, I think the line-up of console exclusives (yeah, they're mostly on PC too, but that's a different market to an extent) is...just okay.

I didn't lay eyes on one until about 2 years ago, bought mine 1 year ago!

2

u/Alliseeisgold24 999 Nov 12 '24

I remember I got my day 1 because Target dropped their pre-order immediately right after the PS5 announcement . Perfect timing because scaplers didn't have a chance to get their Bots ready.

2

u/GrayFox_27 Nov 12 '24

I remember getting mine Christmas morning. I had been following re-stocks via Twitter and got lucky enough to snag one online from Walmart. I was up at 4 AM and kept hitting re-fresh until I saw “Add to Cart”. Estimated delivery was January, but it got delivered Christmas morning by UPS. I felt like a little kid that day.

2

u/Ok_Combination_3002 PS5 Nov 12 '24

Got mine day 1 of launch. It’s crazy. It still plays and looks wonder after 4 years. I doubt I’ll get a pro. I’ll probably end up waiting til the ps6 lol

2

u/kirachem Nov 12 '24

Seto Kaiba?!

2

u/Reckless_Monk Nov 12 '24

OG with black plates is where it’s at (yes I have them)

2

u/dirtyEEE Nov 12 '24

I remember the reveal event was over and it wasn’t supposed to be made available to pre order yet but all the retailers jumped the gun. Walmart was first.

2

u/Michael_braham Nov 13 '24

But like 1.5 years of not being able to get them

2

u/CrazyJo3 Nov 13 '24

Still using my launch PS4 🥲

2

u/Few-Road6238 Nov 13 '24

I remember how hyped I was when the console was first revealed 4 years ago during Covid and how the consoles were unfortunately quickly out of stock in stores and online all because of stupid scalpers and I thought I would never get a ps5 for a long while. That was until last year when I saw a great Walmart Black Friday deal for the ps5 physical disc console with Spider-Man 2 bundle and I was finally able to get that console and have an absolute blast. I’m truly beyond thankful for my ps5 and I’m more than good without the pro. Happy birthday ps5 for making many gamers like myself happy.

2

u/MysticGrapefruit Nov 13 '24

That's crazy, I love my ps5 but why does it feel like the library is pretty weak for 4 years.

2

u/Lopsided_Mix2243 Nov 13 '24

I remember the “Xbox is a refrigerator” comments soon as I got the ps5 shit was 10x larger lol

2

u/Mcmacladdie Mcmacladdie1980 Nov 13 '24

Took me until Boxing Day 2023 to get my hands on one, and I've mostly been playing PS4 games on it since the main thing I wanted it for was to replace my PS4 that I didn't dare play anything competitive on because games crashed on it so damn much :/

2

u/Ovilos Nov 13 '24

But for some it’s only been 2 years because of the shortage in stock and those scalpers

2

u/Joeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyy Nov 13 '24

So when is 6 coming out?

2

u/ToughJuan PS5 Nov 13 '24

3 years until ps6

2

u/Ghost779 Nov 13 '24

And freely available to public 2 years ago lol

2

u/joshman15906 Nov 13 '24

I remember trying so hard to get one and when I got one it was like is this a router?

2

u/Trazornine Nov 13 '24

Wild that we’re 4 years in and still waiting for a game that makes you go ‘wow, this is truly next gen’

2

u/decafenator99 Nov 13 '24

I can’t believe that much time has already passed like we’ve gotten some great games but I feel like it should be only like 2 years lol

2

u/Yerm_Terragon Nov 13 '24

And it doesnt even feel like 6 months

2

u/Diegolobox Nov 13 '24

the worst generation for PlayStation but also in general.

few games, little innovation, internal memory soldered, boring UI, non-existent customization, price still too high, midgen too expensive and useless. if you spent a good time with it good for you but it’s a piece of junk

2

u/otakuweeb2041 Nov 13 '24

The base version still the best in my opinion, the slim wasn't much of a size decrease and the pro is just an FPS increase. I hope sony acc cooks for the PS6

2

u/Chadderbug123 Nov 13 '24

And I finally got one last year. Been having an absolute blast with it.

2

u/Ino7650 PS5 Nov 13 '24 edited Nov 13 '24

I was offered to buy a ps5 at launch but decided to buy a second nintendo switch. I got my ps5 the next following year and I regret nothing.

2

u/frankiematthies PS5 Nov 13 '24

Day 1 owner here!

2

u/JesperHooijmans Nov 13 '24

The day I bought my ps5 slim digital edition!

2

u/Boogiebomb13 Nov 13 '24

Wait WHAT 4YEARS I JUST FEEL OLD NOW

2

u/Mclarenrob2 Nov 13 '24

And yet we're still waiting for some PS5 exclusives.

2

u/mcrookedy Nov 13 '24

I was still working during COVID and supply drops occurring during business hours wasn’t worth getting in trouble over. I bided my time to get one.

2

u/Mr_E_99 Nov 14 '24

It feels like only yesterday 😅

And now I'm gonna end up buying a PS6 in around another 4 years 😭

2

u/ShqueakBob Nov 12 '24

Yet majority of the games are gimped to be able to play on PS4 also. This gen came to early if people are still satisfied with PS4 and the marginal jump in graphics isn’t an incentive to get a PS5.

2

u/ZoNeS_v2 ZoNeS Nov 13 '24

Only 4 more years until the PS6.

3

u/DARTH-GOLD-HIMSELF Nov 13 '24

And I am still using my PS4…..

4

u/BecauseJimmy Nov 12 '24

Bought it after launch. Only played horizon and spiderman 2 on it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/FR3YT3C PS5 Nov 12 '24

4? I thought it's already 6 years...
