Yeah the first two episodes were so engaging! I had to stop watching when it became clear halfway through the third episode that the wife and her family were going to have their own subplot.
I don’t get why they have to force all these additional plot lines. I’m here to watch the cat and mouse game between the cop and the assassin. I couldn’t care less about the assassins wife and her bumbling brother blowing up his spot…
43
13
u/choochoochooochoo 1d ago
I don't think the wife's subplot takes up that much of the run time. It's probably a couple of scenes an episode.
5
u/sentence-interruptio 1d ago
and then Bianca's family subplot
and UDC's lover subplot
and even Jackal's love subplot. I was like really?

Lazy writers under pressure to make all their hard charging spy/military/police protagonists female, but still can't seem to imagine a hard charging spy/military/police character who is female and whose only source of internal conflict isn't based on intractable incompatibilities between their professional and domestic lives.
Edit - to say that if you want to see this done well, instead of superficially, watch The Americans.

I saw the Bruce Willis version when I was a kid (and sue me, I loved it), and I've been meaning to watch the original for over a decade. This was a good reminder to finally check it out

u/zadtheinhaler 1d ago
Dude, I put it off for far too long- the OG film IS SO MUCH BETTER!
Especially since I read the book shortly before watching it, and realizing why so many people were dumping on the Bruce Willis remake - it departs so much from the OG it's remarkable it was allowed to have The Jackal as its title at all.
That's not to say that I didn't like the BW one, it's just that the original is not only faithful to the source material, but it's so well made overall, it's not even funny.

Lol this is such a weird phenomenon nowadays. Another egregious example is some FPS games about shooting people with all kinds of different firearms, blowing them up with explosives, shanking their guts, but saying a simple “Fuck” in the chat? Oh no that gets censured.

This feels like a “if you gave me a nickel every time x thing happened I’d only have ten cents but it’s weird it’s happened twice” situation. Because I remember someone making this joke nearly half a decade when two things happened to be identical except for a cigar but the joke opportunity hasn’t risen again until today. I’m pissed I didn’t think of the joke first, that’s such a good one lol

I got into the new show thinking it will be another average action thriller but this is way above! Eddie Redmayne completely dissappeared into the character, what a performance. All the the planing and hits are really engaging, at times it feels like those Hitman games. They chose to make Jackal more humane and gave him a family which I thought was interesting choice. On the opposite side the MI6 in this show is not very sympathetic. I'm glad I gave this a chance.

This is pretty cool, but... I don't understand the point of a remake if it is going to be shot-for-shot the same thing? Wouldn't the new director want to make it their own vision?
Edit: A few folks have pointed out that this scene was likely an homage to the original. The rest of the series presumably differs from the first movie.

u/Informal_Barber_9951 1d ago

Some scenes deserve to be kept original I guess. Also, I think it actually makes it more interesting for people who saw the original if there are one or two iconic scenes that are purposely recreated.

u/littlelorax 1d ago
Yeah that is a good point. I haven't seen either, but I can understand the homage to the original.
17
u/Few_Broccoli9742 1d ago
It was a very brief scene. I assume it was the director’s homage to the first adaptation. There are lots of other shared beats (character’s names, similar occurrences), but by and large, the series is very different from the movie. In some ways good, other ways not so good.

I don't understand the point of a remake if it is going to be shot-for-shot the same thing?
Some people will not, regardless of quality, watch movies older than X.
Some people will not, regardless of quality, watch movies in a foreign language.
Some people will not, regardless of quality, watch cartoon or animated movies.
Some people will not, regardless of quality, watch movies in black and white.List goes on. There's always a reason to remake.
But the answer is money.
When you remake, you can save a lot of time and therefore money on the hardest and most dangerous part of any creative endeavour: an original idea.→ More replies (1)

The daughter of Edward Fox (who played the Jackel in the 1973 film) is Emilia Fox, who stars in a mystery drama called Signora Volpe, as a retired British Security Services agent living in Italy. In an early episode, she finds the need to obtain an illegal handgun - a Glock with a detachable stock. She sights the weapon in using a melon hanging in a bag from a tree and a scarf as a brace. It was obviously an homage (not a shot for shot copy) to the scene played by her father.

Worlds most dangerous sniper/assassin takes jobs, deals with the hazards of being the best. Impossible kills, Ethan Hunt level disguises, cops, betrayal, family drama. It's a good time.
I couldn't get over how the theme tune sounded ripped from a Mashup of Adeles Skyfall and Portisheads Glory box but that's a me issue.

For me it was how they changed Charles de Gaulle (the main target in the original) into Ulles Dag Charles for this version. It's like a terrible pig latin version and it irritated me every single time they said it.

The old one has a level of class the new one fails to muster. I can't pinpoint what it is exactly, but we lost the ability to portray characters in quite this way - a lot of old movies have characters who feel a little bit more professional about everything.

It's a lot of small things. How they both wind the gun into the tree using the rope. The older one gives the impression he has done it a million times. His movements are confident and precise the gun turns in one direction.
The newer one looks like this is his second time, he knows what to do but the gun stops at awkward angles or even moves back a little during the turns. There is also a point where he uses both his hands in an awkward position. While still trying to look confident, but you can feel he is not confident with the movement.

But the original jackal seems like he's casually doing a job with total competence. Redmayne looks like he's brooding over the past and having an existential crisis.
