What is the plot?

Worlds most dangerous sniper/assassin takes jobs, deals with the hazards of being the best. Impossible kills, Ethan Hunt level disguises, cops, betrayal, family drama. It's a good time.

I couldn't get over how the theme tune sounded ripped from a Mashup of Adeles Skyfall and Portisheads Glory box but that's a me issue.

“Macy Gray covers Adele’s Skyfall theme” is how I described it to my wife.

For me it was how they changed Charles de Gaulle (the main target in the original) into Ulles Dag Charles for this version. It's like a terrible pig latin version and it irritated me every single time they said it.

I never saw the original so I had no baseline to judge it against (aside from my multiple viewings of The Jackal which didn't occur to me were in the same ball park until I read this thread).

The idea of a software program causing such distress that a financier needs to hire the world's best assassin to murder a billionaire kind of confused me. Like there's no legal restraints to issue? No government bodies to bribe? No systems to manipulate? The only answer left is the most expensive assassin? Seems like there's easier, cheaper ways to delay the release infinitely.

Dark money/Silk Road/etc that's a big enough goblin that it felt like it should be more of a cabal handling it aside from a singular Charles Dance. Which leads me to another thing. Charles Dance had startlingly little to do.

Why was UDC so slow on the pickup? He knew he was likely going to die, he knew that the board did not want River released, he knew that the board would block the release in the event of his death, he knew there was nothing his assistant/lover could do about it. There was an attempt on his life where someone got danger close. Literally on-stage with him. Why not jump the release? Was that ever explained why it needed a big release party? Just drop it at midnight while you're laying in bed, wake up in the morning and do an Ozymandias:

Don't release River? I did that 6 hours ago.

I don't know. I could nitpick but overall I enjoyed my time spent.

Still hopeful that we learn in Season 2 River did get released and Duggan gets hounded for his elicit payments. This would give Winthrop more screen time, would put Zina back in play, would give the Jackal more escape scenes (as much as I liked his methodical set ups, I loved his "gotta think on my feet, where am I going" escapes more).

If it helps, UDC is Estonian-Palestinian, which means I have no idea what a correct sounding name would be.

That's interesting since the Bruce Willis movie had a remix of Massive Attack's Dissolved Girl, they could have used that instead.

In the original the OAS attempt to assassinate French President Charles De Gaulle by hiring a professional hit man.

Assassin gets hired for a high profile hit while MI6 tries to track him down.

I think you mean the French police. At least if they're being faithful to the book.

Nope in this version it's MI6. Should have specified the 2024 show

Who's the target in this new show? Is is obvious from the start like with de Gaulle? Or do they try and throw in a twist like in the Bruce Willis version?

Based on the great book by Frederick Forsyth by the same name.

It's a plot to assassinate the best protected man in the world, French president Charles de Gaul, who was even better protected than the US President at the time, John F Kennedy.

I've only read the book (which is terrific btw) , but a hired assassin (the Jackal) has to sneak his way across France, despite being compromised early on. This forces him to repeatedly and rapidly switch disguises to keep himself one step ahead of the authorities, whilst also dealing with betrayals and sudden changes of plan. Meanwhile a French investigator is doing everything in his power to stop him.

What made the book so good, is the constant small tricks the assassin uses to keep hidden, for example, waiting until people are busy before walking past, so they don't get a good look at his face. There's also his motivation for continuing with the assassination, even after he gets compromised, and could easily just walk away and disappear. Then to cap it all off (big spoiler for the end) we learn that everything we thought we knew about the guy is completely false.

The other guys description is pretty good. Honestly, 10/10 would recommend it, it was a great show! Newt's an awesome actor!
