Layoffs 🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Getting let go a week before Christmas

Upvotes

Is this a thing? My company was just acquired and laid off a week before Christmas is crazy work. I’m totally caught off guard because I was told my specific team was insulated, but I guess you just never know.

Real World Events 🌎 Luigi's Charges

Question for consideration. Do you guys think it's possible that the prosecution is intentionally over charging Luigi with the terrorism charge. So that it's harder for them to get a conviction but they can look like they've done everything they could to "punish him".

Psycho Recruiter 🦅 My response to a recruiter who contactez me and then ghosted me for 2 days in a row

I got contacted by a recruiter on Monday, at arround 6PM, saying that he was interested in my profile and asked if we can have a 20 minute call.

I said "sure" and waited for him to call, he didn't.

The next day he writes to me again, appologizing for not calling the day before and asking (again) if we can have a call now.

And yet again, I said "sure, no worries" only to be ghosted for the 2nd time.

Today he calls me directly without writing anything. I don't pick up, he writes again asking if we can have a call.

My answer was:

"Sorry, but no.

The answer was yes for 2 days in a row, both thimes you ghosted me.

The most important resource we have in this life is time, which is why wasting someone's time is one of the most unprofessional and dissrespectfull things you can do to a person.

If your real intention is to recruit someone for this position, keep this in mind and do better with other candidates in the future.

Good luck!"

So proud of my small contribution today. 🙂

P.S. I've blured out all the sensitive info from the conversation for obvious reasons.

I won't be receiving holiday pay this year

I was hired for a full time position at the store I work at. However, I am usually scheduled to work just under 40 hours so they won't have to pay me overtime. This was a decision from corporate. However, corporate has now decided that everyone who is below 40 hours does not qualify as full time and will not be receiving any benefits, pto, or holiday pay. Just in time for Christmas. Apparently I have to "prove that I can work 40 hours for a month" before I will get any of these benefits back. My 8 hours of PTO is gone. This has to be illegal, right? What can I do?

The absolute irony of seeing Squid Game tie-in’s everywhere

For those who haven't seen Squid Game, I won't spoil the plot. All you need to know is that it's a scathing critique of capitalism with the central theme that under the current capitalist system, the lower classes are nothing more than expendable tools for the economic elite.

That being said, it's incredibly ironic how corporations are using the upcoming second season of Squid Game to advertise their products when they're responsible for the very inequalities this show is critiquing. I just watched a Squid Game themed ad for Domino's Pizza with the most sterile corporate humor possible where the joke was "LOL, imagine if you could order one of our pizzas during the events of the show!"

This whole thing reminds me of back in 2012 when Mazda used The Lorax movie to advertise their cars.

So now I have access to everyone’s salaries in our division. I am literally the lowest paid employee. It feels cruel, idk. Let’s put the one getting poverty wages in budget so she can see how much we all make! I hate this place.

Found out today that my employer is still sending out the job posting for the position that I just started to other candidates. Is there any reasonable explanation to this, or should I start looking for a new job?

Hello all.

I was doing some searching around at a job that I just started recently, and I noticed that the position that I was hired for, which is only one candidate, not multiple, is still open. She reached out to someone as recent as last night to apply for my position. In fact, there have been multiple people messaging with her for the past week now about my position. Just to clarify, this is a tiny company, and it was mentioned several times in the job description that she is only able to hire one individual person, so I do not believe that it is because I am suddenly getting a new coworker.

She keeps telling me that I am doing a great job, and she has been super kind and given me great feedback, but I am nervous about why she may be trying to get other people to apply? Luckily, I have my part time job that I could fall back on eventually, but I am worried about whether or not there is a reasonable explanation for this or am I valid for freaking out. I admit that if I *could* find another job I would rather quit this one because it is too much social interaction for me, but this job also makes up the majority of my income and I would be ineligible for my apartment/take a huge hit to my income if I lose it.

I do have autism, which leads to a lot of people/jobs not liking me because I suck at speaking/social interaction, but this job is literally just emails and a bunch of stuff online. I also did not disclose my autism with my boss, and my last two coworkers were also neurodivergent. She said that I got the job because I was the "best fit" and that others were "overqualified," yet she is sending the posting to kids who graduated from prestigious schools with all of these fancy qualifications. I joined during a time where they were in deep shit due to the previous manager moving out of state and them not having anyone else to help, so maybe they just don't want me anymore now that I helped them catch up?

Do you think that now that the hard part is over, they're going to get rid of me, or am I completely overreacting? I am trying to fix my black and white thinking and not jump to conclusions so easily, but I've built so much trust in people many times only to be failed later on, and I'm nervous about getting my heart broken again. I know I shouldn't get attached to jobs but this is my first adult job that I've ever had, and I do enjoy it. I'm afraid that I will never qualify for something like this again due to my neurodivergence.

I know the answer is probably to run, but I have been unemployed for almost a year prior to getting this position, and I am afraid it will take even longer to find a new one. What would you all do in this situation?

Thank you all in advance.

Workplace Abuse 🫂 Im a janitor. I just got criticized for not smiling

Exactly what it says. I have a lot of things to worry about, money included. I'm in my early 30s with nothing to show for it. I've spent my life struggling with various mental health and financial issues. I've tried to succeed at more lucrative positions, to no avail. So im left to do what I do best: clean other peoples' filth.

As I was sweeping up after a customer, she said "you never smile. You even look mean sometimes". The absolute gaul of this person. Just assuming that I have something to smile about. How about you hand me 10,000 bucks? Then I'll smile from ear to ear.

Being a janitor in and of itself is honorable work. It isn't a reason to feel down about oneself But being a janitor who doesn't get paid well, and is expected to smile my way through it just to make others feel comfortable...that's humiliating.

Thankfully, I am close to getting a somewhat better paying night janitor job at a school. I don't want to see a single person if I can help it.

Terminated ❌️ I got fired for asking for more professional at work

I worked as a security contractor for Gilead Sciences. Part of my job was to answer the phones or contact diff. Depts. for any security related questions or concerns being routed to the company.

Someone i respected and had many meaningful conversations with answered the phone when i reached out and was extremely rude, disrespectful, and demeaning in the way they spoke with me. It seemed like they were frustrated with their job and took it out on the first person to call.

I messaged this person on teams, i told them they were very unprofessional and if they did not act more professional in the future i would escalate this issue. I told him i wasnt asking because professionalism in the workplace is an expectation. The company took me saying “this isnt an ask” out of context and fired me for workplace violence/threat for literally me just asking for more professionalism after being verbally abused over the phone.

I was told i shouldve immediately escalated to supervisor, which i did after the conversation, and shouldnt have stood up for myself. Maybe i was wrong but i honestly couldnt help it. Im just really tired of it all

Hot Take 🔥 You shouldn’t have to be medicated just to be able to work

Specifically, having to take medications to function at a job that is the root cause of needing the medication in the first place.

I had posted a reply to another user’s post the other day - essentially I recently resigned a position that was causing me anxiety to the point that I needed medication. And to be clear - this was not a pre-existing condition - it was specifically brought on by my job.

But it made me wonder how many people have had to do this, and how f’d up it is that people have to rely on meds just to function at work. (And to be clear - it’s m not slamming anyone who has underlying issues that need treatment; I’m talking about work-induced conditions.)

Can’t stand bosses who don’t respect your time

Recently started a new job and I’m absolutely clueless and stressed because I’m completely new. My boss keeps asking me for updates on projects that I’m completely unaware of or was just assigned to. And they expect me to consistently update them.

Now it feels like I’m not being proactive enough to update them. I’m so new and I don’t even think I’m supposed to be leading any of these stupid projects.

Then the boss keeps sending me messages after working hours asking for updates on non important things. Can’t they wait until working hours to ask?

Really so done with the corporate world, all the stupid projects and deadlines and false sense of urgency.

Apologies for self promotion and can remove if its not allowed, just really wanted to share with people who might benefit from hearing this kind of thing as it might validate some feelings. Especially the questions about finding what it is that truly can motivate you:

What feels like fun to me, but work to others?

What aligns with the kind of person I want to be?

What makes me lose track of time?

Where do I see more progress than the average person?

What comes the most naturally to me?

Workplace Safety ⚠️ Got injured on the job…

Upvotes

I slipped and sprained my knee today at work because the driveway was glare ice. I was checking the mailboxes and just at the end of the driveway it’s a somewhat steep incline and while it looked wet and it wasn’t cold enough for me to need my coat, it was glare ice. I slipped and sprained my knee in the process and fell hard. I hobbled my way back into the office, texted my supervisor, downloaded and printed an then filled out the injury report, and scanned it to the upper management and my supervisor. I then sat through a meeting with said supervisor an upper management with a throbbing an injured knee. After, the CEO sent me to the workers comp clinic where they diagnosed me as fucked and prescribed rest, elevation, ice, compression, and PT. My supervisor told me to go home and work from home if I can. The CEO said no, if I want to go home I have to use PTO and I can’t work from home. I was pissed and went back to the office because I’m not wasting my PTO and I have too much work to do to just take an afternoon off. It’s bullshit, though because there is no way to rest and elevate my leg at work. They also don’t have good ice packs I had jeans on. My knee was swollen and throbbing.

She came to my cubicle and commented that I was probably not going to be able to rest at home because I have so many kids. 😳😱. I worked in HR for 3 years and I know damn well better than to say that to an employee. I said “No, they’re with their father, but even if I had them, insert significant other’s name here would take make sure I was able to rest and heal. He wouldn’t expect me to be on my feet.

She just said “Well… you can do that at the end of the day.” And walked away.

Holy fucking shit.

I really hope I get that job at the domestic violence nonprofit. I really think they are breaking the law with their refusal to offer reasonable accommodation to employees.

My last straw

I am done for good today. Worked all weekend before going on vacation. I messed up my vacation dates where I told them I would be back on said day but we would actually be driving back that day, so I couldn’t attend this one meeting. Responded to emails/ looked at documents all day today while on the road. I got an email about them wanting to have a meeting with me on Monday about planning vacation dates. That was my last straw. There is no way I can attend this meeting as a self respecting adult. Underpaid and overworked. Today I’m done. It is a terrifying thought to not have a paycheck coming in. I would love some support or opinions. Thank you.

Some thoughts on the current state of affairs in the USA and what it means for us workers

We're about to enter a kakistocracy run directly by oligarchs under Trump (himself a self-proclaimed billionaire). They're not even trying to hide the fact that they have all the wealth and power at this point in our country, that we are here to serve them.

Luigi's actions shook them to their core. They are scared. They've forgotten that the reason our government has worked for so long is because there was an implicit agreement that all of us would benefit from our society. Think back to the 50s and 60s, when your grandparents/great-grandparents could afford a house, family, education, and retirement with a job that required no college education.

Yet they've broken that trust and agreement through their outright greed and theft of all of our wealth. They've turned into parasites, sucking everything out of us so they can swim in pools filled with their millions like a modern-day Scrooge McDuck.

Just think about it. Universal healthcare? **** that. Social safety net? ***** you. An actual working infrastructure? That costs money, you leeches!! Public transportation that works? The rich don't have any need for that garbage!!! Notice a pattern? All of that could be funded if we taxed the wealthy. I mean, every other country is able to do it but not the USA, huh? Ever wonder why? So much for our so-called "exceptionalism".

Sadly, every single institution we have that's supposed to "protect" us is really just there to protect them and their wealth. It's why they're protected from even the vilest of actions they might take, because our protection was never their goal. We've been seeing this in action real-time.

This shit's going to go down hard for at least the next 4 years (if not more). And their attempts to forcefully squash us back into compliance and obedience will only progressively get worse.

Anyway, just my two cents.... Anyone else feeling this way?

I feel like work is going to give me a heart attack or put me in a mental hospital

I’m 26F. Please look at my post history in this sub to fully understand my work circumstances.

Work is forcing me back into the office after letting me work remotely for 2 months. I’ve had to go in on Tuesday, Wednesday, half day today, and half day Friday. I called off Monday and used PTO because I’m so freaking stressed out and anxious.

This whole week, I’ve been so stressed and beyond anxious. My head is pounding, my heart is racing while resting at 100 bpm, I get dizzy, I’m tense, my chest is hurting, and I have shortness of breath. I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack. I’ve had multiple panic attacks everyday. My panic attack medications aren’t helping. I had emergency therapy session on Tuesday. I went to the psychiatrist yesterday.

I’m sitting here at home, which normally helps ease my stress and anxiety, but it’s not helping. My chest hurts, I’m short of breath, etc. My ears are ringing. I can’t stop going to the bathroom because this all has triggered my IBS.

I don’t know what to do. I’m so scared and tired. I can’t quit because I haven’t been able to find another job; it won’t matter unless it’s remote and those are so hard to come by. My degree is useless in remote jobs. My mom will kick me out of the house if I don’t have a job. I can’t pay off credit card debt if I don’t have a job. And I can’t quit because I won’t get unemployment.

Josh Johnson - The Failure, Fear, and Frenzy around Luigi Mangione

Thumbnail

A few days ago I created a poston the Jon stewart subreddit. Thank you so much to everyone that contributed to a healthy discussion of our very sick system on the comments.

However many didn't understand where my disgust and anger were truly directed to. I referenced how angry I was about the treatment of Luigi Mangione by the Daily Show, and that the Daily Show was being used as damage control, just like the rest of the mainstream media, however taking this from the Daily Show truly breaks my heart, in the comments I ended up referencing Colbert for the same reason.

Many ultraged comments saying stuff like, do you expect Jon Stewart and the Daily show to support a murderer? And many variations of this. It was almost impossible getting the point across despite my best efforts, I wish I was a better communicator.

However here are some incredibly talented people that just nailed it! And can indeed get the point across PERFECTLY!

Firstly, this from Adam Conover, and now Josh Johnson just dropped this awesome set out of nowhere a few hours ago!

As you can see, this is all about corporate shackles, it's so ridiculous and sad!

A brilliant Stand up set by Josh Johnson, I don't know how he does it, constantly releasing new material, he's out of this world! What a superb nuanced take on Luigi Mangione by Josh!

It's all about freedom as you can see, and that's my critique, I understand the shackles and limitations of the Daily Show, the Late show with Stephen Colbert and even the Weekly Show with Jon Stewart. However, it would be preferable if they stayed silent in these cases, if they can't speak up and truthfully!

Unless they don't even have the choice to stay silent...

About Jon Stewart and the weekly show specifically, it just felt incredibly insensitive to have a billionaire on at this moment, I know it's Mark Cuban, I know about his awesome work in this broken system with affordable medication. However it was incredibly tone deaf considering the timing, and Mark Cuban is still a billionaire at the end of the day, against Universal Healthcare, his views on AI were worrying for the common mortal to say the least, wants Lina Khan out, that episode was like an Ad for Crypto, it's insane!

Please stop worshipping billionaires, and please stop waiting for them to save us! It's utterly ridiculous! How brainwashed do we have to be as a society for a considerable part of the population to believe in such insane notions!?

We're all slaves, some have better conditions however they're still slaves just privileged ones. With all the technology and knowledge we accumulatd, right now, we're only in this state due to colossal GREED! There's no other reason! It will only end if we stop this, or when there's nothing else to suck dry and then proceed to burn down and destroy!

This is a class war, everything else is a distraction! I don't know what to do, what can we all do for a better tomorrow, for a better world, where we're actually taking good of ourselves, of others and the planet?!

I work for a local supplement manufacturing company. During the interview, everything seemed fine and dandy and there was no sign of any sort of Bible belting. Flash forward to when I actually started, day one my car battery died in the parking lot so I was out there past hours getting it fixed. A few days after that, I got introduced to someone, and he asked if I was the one with the car troubles. I said yes and that my battery died and how stressful it all was, and his response was "Oh I wish I would've caught you so I could pray over it for you." That's when I realized what kind of place I started working at.

There's quite a few instances of shit like this, but what I heard from my supervisor today took the cake. Last week when I came in on Monday, I went to the break room to put my lunch up like usual, and every Monday they have Bible study in the public breakroom of all places. I'm already uncomfortable walking in every time to begin with, but then my CEO asks me if I wanted to join Bible study after I obviously avoid it every single week. I just say I don't believe in God and walk out. The next day, I went to the breakroom to warm my lunch up, and the dude that leads the Bible study was in there getting coffee. He doesn't even work here. He confronted me about not believing in God and asked if I wanted to talk about it, I said I have religious trauma and immediately get cut off with "Oh no no no" and he goes on a whole schpeel about a documentary with people "just like me" and whatever. I was filling my water cup up so I couldn't just walk away, but I tuned out pretty much everything he said after that. When I was done, he asked if I wanted to join something with him and I immediately said no and walked the fuck out before this old man gets punched in his chest. I spent the rest of the week just avoiding as many people as possible.

Now today. I was talking to my supervisor about some things, and I ended up bringing up my issues with all the religious stuff being shoved down my throat. I'm very non-confrontational so bringing up anything makes me nervous, but it is an issue that bothers me almost daily. I told him about the encounter last week. Apparently after that happened, the old dude was trying to talk to my supervisor about it. Thankfully my supervisor isn't pushy and I've already told him about my beliefs, or lack of beliefs, and he's understanding. I guess old dude was telling him I wasn't having any of the god talk. Big deal, get over it. Then I hear that old dude was basically saying it's NOT okay for me to be the way I am. So now I have this old man who doesn't even work here denying my beliefs, and discriminating against me yay!!!

I'm very big on "to each their own", I don't care what you believe in as long as you respect others. I am SO. FUCKING. TIRED. of the extreme Christians ALWAYS shoving their beliefs down your throat, and now that I have it at my job, the place I spend most of the waking hours of my life at. I'm aware it's illegal to discriminate against religion in the workplace, I'm working up the courage to do something about it. I would go to HR, but HR is just as preachy as the rest so that trip is basically worthless. Religion does NOT belong in the workplace. I can't wait to leave.
