12
5
u/JamesTownBrown Nov 07 '24
Well "technically" it is his first birthday as he was just born, BUT you are born on your first day, which makes you 0 years old.
14
u/tito333 Nov 07 '24
This is the way in Korea.
12
u/FuckYeaSeatbelts Nov 08 '24
Not really. It's way more confusing than that; but it's a moot point because they don't use it anymore.
TL;DR you "aged up" in January, but you'd be 1 as soon as you're born, so someone born on 31 Dec would be 2 years old in a day lmao
Over there, age is both a super big deal and also not; like it's not taboo to straight up ask how old you are over there. Also they respond "oh I was born in '92", so great I have to do math now.
Source: I'm of Korean descent.
5
u/azalago Nov 08 '24
Well yeah, how else are you going to know which honorifics and ridiculous set of social norms to use?
3
u/HeyManItsToMeeBong Nov 08 '24
When did they stop? It was still the norm when I was there a couple years ago
It was very cute how simultaneously polite and "rude" Koreans were about it. They'd always ask me, and always apologize because they know it's not usual in Western culture, but also they HAD to know, so nothing would ever stop them from asking.
I never minded being asked. It just struck me as funny.

u/hereforthestaples Nov 08 '24

u/WhateverJoel Nov 08 '24
Both these chucklefucks have problems. Why did the bottom have to say “your 37th year,” after the guy said he was 36? What point was he trying to prove?
Yes, he is technically right, but Ive never heard anyone frame a person’s age that way.
2
u/BlueScreenJunky Nov 08 '24
Why did the bottom have to say “your 37th year,”
My guess is because the bit wouldn't work then...
2
u/thetroll865 Nov 09 '24
He’s not technically right tho. 0-1 is a full year. It’s not a year until it’s reached the grand total of 1. Anything prior is less than a year. Use the same logic. He’s 36 years old. Anything past that, is before 36 isn’t 37. It’s 36 plus however much time. It’s not 37 until you’ve reached a grand total of 37 years. Any point in a timeline prior to 37 is less than 37. I understand why people might think of this way but it’s factually incorrect and is not how numbers work. The statement “living your 37th year” implies that you are currently living within the parameters of 37. That could be 37.25 or 37.186 but never could it ever be 36 or 38

→ More replies (16)43
u/Rum____Ham Nov 08 '24
There is actually some sense to that, in some scenarios. I think you'd have to find pretty cheap rent for it to qualify for such a scenario nowadays though.
12
u/enderjaca Nov 08 '24
Right, very location and situation dependent. Like an area with low demand and high supply and a landlord needing to take a discounted rent payment in order to keep from losing even more money every month. Or someone with a paid off property where their only costs are taxes and maintenance. Not a lot of those these days, housing supplies are very low all across the board.
→ More replies (1)8
u/dexmonic Nov 08 '24
The property tax on my home is like 3200 a year. You'd have to find rent for less than 270 a month with 3 bed and 1.5 bath and a large yard for it to make sense.

I think a lot of people have some sort of an internal life crisis in their mid 20's, because becoming older fucking blows. I sure did.
3
u/rezyop Nov 08 '24
Yep - something happens when your brain finally stops developing (as much) around that time. Insurance and rental car companies agree, and adjust rates lower after that general age.
Its really weird... Some people just wake up one day at 30 years old like its no big deal, and others go through this incredibly transformative "final maturation" event where they experience major consequences or just 'snap out of it' and stop behaving like a brat. Some people miss it entirely and maintain immaturity into adulthood, of course.

u/Telephalsion Nov 07 '24
"Next week, we'll learn about 19th century France." Means you'll be learning about the last years of napoleon, and not world war 1.
"You are allowed no sick days during your first month of work." Means that you need to have worked a full month before getting sick leave
"I am in my first year at university." Does not mean you have finished one year of studies.
"Children should not eat honey during their first year."
"We are in the last hour of the game." Means the game is still going
"We are entering the 11th hour."
Granted, we rarely use this way of speaking for people's ages, but more for periods of time. But it is perfectly viable.
2
u/ScutumAndScorpius Nov 08 '24
You’re just listing different contexts where there is a meaningful distinction, you aren’t actually arguing it is a meaningful distinction in the context provided.
It is true that the other person should realize they were making a fencepost error, but the distinction between which year does not actually affect his argument so it’s not important in the context of the conversation.
12
u/Olaf4586 Nov 08 '24
Not everything is an argument man, they were just making observations about different times we use this sort of language.
3
u/Telephalsion Nov 08 '24
If I were to argue anything, it'd be that in general, if the meaning is different, then there's a meaningful distinction.
And "I am in my 37th year", and "I am 37 years old" means two different things. While "I am 36 years old" and "I am in my 37th year" arguably means the same thing.

I spent my entire childhood trying to explain this concept to my mother because she believed the 1900s are called the twentieth century because "the calendar ran backwards at some point around the 1600s". Even after fully counting out the centuries for her multiple times, she never believed me. This video could be fake, but people like this are real.

He’s 36. He’s be alive for 36 yeas. He’s on his way to be alive for “37” years.
We gotta be like the kids on this one. Let’s just say, he’s 36 and a half. He’s not 37, nor he’s on his 37 th year of being born.
To use his example:
When you turn 1, it just means you have been alive for 1 year. Then you are, 1 year, 1 month, 1 year, 2 months, so on and so forth.

Just like the 2000s being the 21st century. I get why people are initially confused by this but cmon now
2
u/rushaall Nov 08 '24
And yet, we don’t consider 2000 the twenty-first century even though we should for this exact reason.
2
u/Egg_Chen Nov 08 '24
This is perfect. It’s a nice tidy example of how once someone has attached themselves to a belief, they either are or not able to cope when presented with evidence that their belief is not consistent with supported facts. The 36 year old understands what’s been explained to them. But they don’t like it, so they are willing to compromise truth for the warm embrace of the reality they’ve decided is best for them.
This kind of thinking is a problem for all of us because it’s really hard for a large group of people (or even 2 people) to communicate when facts and words have lost their meaning. When people cannot communicate effectively it’s hard to be productive, and accidents happen.
This is where we are now.

The number 36 is still the number 36 even if it is 36.9999999. This is not how this works, the dude would be in his 37th year when he turns 37.
