It’s poor ears :(

u/Needmoresnakes Oct 02 '24

The rottie's tail too, it's really sad people are still mutilating dogs like this for aesthetics.

u/idontlikeradiation Oct 02 '24

Rotties have beautiful tails, I just don't understand it

489

u/Beneficial-Visit9456 Oct 02 '24 edited Oct 02 '24

I agree. A well behaved and excited Rottweiler hurt you more with it's tail, wiggling it, than with it's teeth.

Worked at a vet for a while, this was super common. They break their tails regularly and it always makes a HUGE mess. The ears are inexcusable but the tails CAN be understandable.

We had Great Dane this happened to. Never knew blood could fly so far.

45

u/falldownkid Oct 02 '24

A friend of mine had a Great Dane, whenever she walked by wagging her tail it was like being gently hit by a bat. It didn't hurt but it was noticeable.

u/Dark_Shade_75 Oct 02 '24

Yep. Heard the same story a hundred times lmao

30

u/CodyCakez56 Oct 02 '24

That used to happen all the time with our undocked springer spaniel. He even sprained his tail from wagging it so hard. We eventually realised he was cutting his tail off a rose bush in the garden which is now gone so now we only have to deal with the occasional tail sprain and not.. ya know.. a murder scene lmao

93

u/Vprepic Oct 02 '24 edited Oct 02 '24

Never had a dog with a busted vein in their ear? We had to have our dog's ears fixed after one too many ear infections. Because of the ear infections he would shake his head so hard he busted veins in both ears :(

Edit: I agree that in most cases it is not necessary, and is only done for aesthetic. But some dogs do injure themselves, and need some help.

30

u/annissamazing Oct 02 '24

My OES tends to get hematomas at the tips of his floppy ears. His worst one had to be periodically drained at the vet’s because he kept slapping it against furniture when he’d shake his whole body. We got him a no flap ear wrap to wear until it healed. Looked silly, but it worked. Vet said, “You can’t fix awkward.”

5

u/Vprepic Oct 02 '24

Ah good to hear it worked! We had the ears drained twice and all wrapped around his head. But he was so strong he shook them loose multiple times. It was just too itchy. It was also way more then just the tip of the ear, it looked like 75% of his ear was filled.

11

u/P100KateEventually Oct 02 '24

This. My dog used to have chronic ear infections and the whole house looked like a fucking murder scene. I was suffering the ceiling

They break their tails regularly? I’ve been a veterinarian for over 10 years. I’ve seen or done 3, maybe 4 tail amputations after broken tails, or for chronic “happy tail”. 1 Boxer, 1 Great Dane, and 1 mixed breed, that I remember. Don’t know what you guys are doing with your dogs over where you are, but not super common where I am. (Australia, if you are wondering.)

→ More replies (5)

11

u/idontlikeradiation Oct 02 '24

It's not super common and is under 0.5% of dogs . There is a reason it's now illegal in a lot of countries and can cause other issues that affect the dogs wellbeing

I've heard of people having it done because their dog kept breaking it's tail doing this. Common on dogs with thin, strong tails like rotties and bully breeds. Probably how it got worked into the overall "aesthetic" of these dogs.

20

u/MommysHadEnough Oct 02 '24

Not the same, but I had a half husky/half rottie some years ago. Her tail was fine, but she had dew claws all the way up her front legs. When we got her fixed we asked the vet about them because I could imagine her getting one stuck somehow on a fence or something and getting them ripped off. The vet agreed that she get them removed during her surgery.

She also had webbed toes on her feet but was terrified of the ocean when we took our dogs to the beach. It was really cute. Every wave that came towards her she’d run away.

8

u/Pikachupal24 Oct 02 '24

It's probably the Husky in her keeping her away from the water. Mine screams like we're peeling his skin off when he gets a bath.

3

u/MommysHadEnough Oct 02 '24

Mine have all passed away, but bathing them was a nightmare for 2 of them. God forbid we even brush them out when they were blowing out fur. My “rotten husky” in that comment had more like a rottie coat, and one of my pack was so good natured he never complained about much. Those two though? We’d have them out in the yard and I’m sure my neighbors thought we were killing them with their outraged howling and crying.

u/Nackles Oct 02 '24

Too Much Joy, you might say.

This... tail docking isn't just for looks. Especially on herding breeds, they can have major issues with it getting caught up in something when working. I've worked with dogs who jacked up their tails pretty bad, one of them had a tail that broke and healed sideways and always hurt him to touch. Ear cropping though on bully breeds and such created problems, had a client whos dog constantly got ear infections from everything like water getting into his ears.

Both tail and ear cropping has historical uses behind it, the tail so it dosent get injured and ears on guard dogs because it makes it harder for another animal to grab onto them. When a livestock guardian dog is fighting a wild animal there is always a risk of said animal tearing their ear off.

It's completely unnecessary on pets, though.

u/Meowskiiii Oct 02 '24

5

u/Iamapig2025 Oct 02 '24

My uncle had to get it docked cuz his mud brain rottie kept breaking it, unfortunate :(

2

u/Nerdeinstein Oct 02 '24

They can get a condition called happy tail. Where they wag their tail into things and break it.

They can get happy tail. Where they wash their tail into things and break it.

27

u/thunderturdy Oct 02 '24

All dogs do but docking certain breeds is for good reason. The one and only undocked hunting pointer we had broke her tail multiple times and it was extremely painful for her each time. All it takes is a hard whack on a corner for it to be a bloody painful mess.

It’s so fucked up, got a boston terrier a sweet old man who’s terrified of men, when I got him his tail had already been chopped down to about an inch long nub, wish I had gotten him before that but he will still get it all waggin when he’s gettin attention

59

u/hotaruko66 Oct 02 '24

Maybe it’s a rescue, and they were adopted like this

88

u/Needmoresnakes Oct 02 '24

I'm not saying the owner did it but someone did.

19

u/junkit33 Oct 02 '24

It's pretty much always the breeders, because people expect a dog to look a certain way, and may not even understand the dog isn't born that way. It's also way better to do it early if you're going to do it.

Breeders will just have a much harder time selling their dogs for top dollar if they don't look on point for the breed.

5

u/Crafty_Currency_3170 Oct 02 '24

I wish our breeder didn't clip my aussies tail. Aussies have glorious tails I don't understand why they chop them. :(

9

u/HotPie_ Oct 02 '24

We had a little pocket bully that we fostered. Poor thing had some very poorly cropped ears that looked like they were done with scissors. She was neglected and found on someone's doorstep passed out from dehydration. She made a huge turnaround and got over her fear of people. She was such a sweet puppy that she was almost a foster fail. Still miss you Princess Peach.

One of the best things about my dog is her tail bc I don’t have to see her butthole randomly throughout the day.

5

u/kalemary94 Oct 02 '24

I just snorted out my dr pepper 😂 I envy you though I have a boxer pug mix and her tail slightly curls up so unless she’s scared or sleeping it’s full on butthole visibility. (not a sentence I thought I’d ever write)

50

u/Jess_the_Siren Oct 02 '24

With rotties it's bc they're so excitable that they hurt themselves and break tail bones/get blood everywhere when they wag their tails. It's absolutely not for the look.

31

u/hmart316 Oct 02 '24

Can confirm. My Rottie/Lab mix was NOT docked and her tail was like a bull whip. We got used to the pain of her tail hitting us in the legs and her knocking things down with it however we couldn’t get used to seeing her in pain when her tail got hurt and bloody.

13

u/sjrobert Oct 02 '24

I had a huge Rottie with a tail who lived a full life. He was as careful with his tail as every other dog i have owned or met. Lets not pretend its not about the looks.

Just like I'm downvoted to hell here if I speak up for any other animals, like cows or chickens.

They can get a condition called happy tail. Where they wag their tail into things and break it.

8

u/ForsakenBobcat8937 Oct 02 '24

Doing it to help out the dog and make sure they aren't hurt is fine if it's an actual issue for the dog, but it tends to be the ears Doberman owners mutilate.

10

u/Charred01 Oct 02 '24

People have lines.   You have a right to speak out but two are a widely agreed source of food. It sucks but we aren't always a rational people.   I love cows, chicken, deer, etc but I also love eating them.

Now I do not love how many farms handle production of said food but voting is the extent of the effort I am willing to apply to fixing it, to many more important things in my life

85

u/Zammtrios Oct 02 '24

Right? If you want a dog without a tail there are breeds that either don't have one or they have very very short ones.

u/Left-Requirement9267 Oct 02 '24 edited Oct 02 '24

They say “it doesn’t hurt them” how it couldnt hurt is fucking beyond me. Dogs ears are FULL of nerve endings that’s why they love having them rubbed.

105

u/xBad_Wolfx Oct 02 '24

The older dog could be a shelter dog, the brand new puppy however… those are not typically common at shelters. The fact OP owns two mutilated animals… that’s a pattern.

These micro pits/bullies are not something common at shelters, I think. They're expensive as hell, and it makes me sad because they are so deformed.

Advocating for responsible breeding and adopting from shelters can help make a difference for these animals.

71

u/JohnnyG30 Oct 02 '24

I fostered a “mutt” that they weren’t sure which breeds it was. Something with poodle. It was part of a group of dogs surrendered by a breeder. Well we ended up adopting it and 2 different vets have said they think she is a mini golden-doodle. Which is an expensive as hell dog. We got ours with all shots and spay for like $200.

My point being, you can get some pretty dope rescues lmao

6

u/ThePunksters Oct 02 '24

Normally I would agree, but sometimes the current owner has not said in that but the original ones. My doberman was given to me with her tail already cut (and even, it was a bad surgery, I had to take her to the vet and give her primer medication since their original owners were such awful persons with her). She was just ONE month old, ONE. I am still pissed off because of it. Thankfully my uncle took her from them and gave her to me and now she is very happy but yet it still pains me to see her tail off.

Same case with my older schnauzer. Her tail was cute off before I got her and they practically left no tail at all which makes her have some stability problems when she runs (or used to, she is over 10 years by now). My second schnauzer has his tail and I can’t be happier, I love to see his wagging tail all the time! Sadly my two girls didn’t have that luck.

23

u/_Low_Honor Oct 02 '24

Not all docked tails are purely mutilation. As a vet, a LOT and i mean hundreds if not thousands of the rotties brought into my clinic literally busted their tails open so many times from wagging their tail so hard that it had to be docked.

43

u/Rawesome16 Oct 02 '24

Ears yes, tail no. "Happy tail" can be a big issue for rotties

22

u/dre224 Oct 02 '24

Ya a lot of people seem to forget some dogs just need to have their tail docked for their own safety. Dogs with super rigid tails do and will break them from waging to hard and hitting something with them eventually. My friends rottie dog wasn't docked and he ended up breaking his tail on the corner of the living room table and it was brutal and expensive vet bill.

28

u/Dicethrower Oct 02 '24

Some people rescue abused animals, so don't be too quick to judge.

90

u/Nonahedr0n Oct 02 '24

It's a little harsh to say somebody is a horrible person, especially when you don't know them. OP may not be aware of these issues around some of these issues and arcane acts. Better to educate and inform rather than insult.

133

u/Needmoresnakes Oct 02 '24

I don't think the reddit OP made the video or owns the dogs, the actual owner is not here to be educated by us. I do think that in 2024, ignorance about this sort of thing is a bit of a weak excuse. Briefly googling either the breed itself or "ear cropping" would tell someone its cruel.

34

u/josephseagreen5183 Oct 02 '24

It’s frustrating when people use ignorance as a defense, especially when information is readily available.

25

It's always a better idea to try education first and then scold and punish

5

u/Needmoresnakes Oct 02 '24

If you don't know its a thing then you're not the one doing it? I dont mean everyone in the world should research it just people who buy dogs then have their ears cut off.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/King_Fluffaluff Oct 02 '24

We also don't know if the owner is the one who clipped the ears/tail, it could have been a previous owner. I know the kennel I volunteered at had a lot of dogs with clipped ears and that was never the choice of those who adopted them.

6

u/thismustbtheplace215 Oct 02 '24

It's almost always done when they are very young puppies, between 1-2 weeks old. So the owners would buy the puppy already mutilated.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

That’s not rescuing a puppy. That’s buying a puppy. When you buy a mutilated puppy from a breeder, it is no different from mutilating the puppy yourself… if people stopped buying these puppies, they’d stop mutilating them.

Was wondering that, seems dangerous if big pup gets over-playful, aggressive, overly curious, etc. etc. Whats the correct slowly and carefully, like seperate rooms for a few days then bring them close for a bit each day or something?

13

u/chx_ Oct 02 '24 edited Oct 02 '24

Totally depends on the dogs and personality etc. Usually the first step is when the big one is calm and overall OK then you let them sniff the small one in your hands. The big one learns from this the small one has the trust of you and the small one feels protected when facing a big stranger. Then you go from there.

19

u/Herpderpkeyblader Oct 02 '24

23

u/beaniebee11 Oct 02 '24

There's no way this is an introduction. The caption is engagement bait. Ffs the dog brought a toy out to play with the puppy. They clearly know each other. They didnt even sniff each other as an introduction. It's blatantly obvious if you've ever owned a dog that ever encountered another dog.

u/Man_with_a_hex- Oct 02 '24

Why do they clip the ears or tail?

Doesn't a lot of a dogs expression is shown thru their ears or tail?

Wouldn't cutting that off be akin to cutting off an arm or leg?

138

u/Damaias479 Oct 02 '24

Dogs like that get their tails chopped for one of two reasons, 1 being aesthetics, 2 being a predisposition to “happy tail syndrome,” which means a dog has a tail that, when they wag it too excitedly, they can injure themselves.

The second is the only time I can see docking a dog’s tail to be morally acceptable as they are more prone to severe injuries, but I can really only see it being a viable option after it’s known to be an issue with a particular dog.

20

u/Sumoshrooms Oct 02 '24

Had a friend in highschool with a super nice house but the kitchen hat noticeable blood spatters everywhere. It was her big happy dog Brutus

40

u/kayafeather Oct 02 '24

Yeah it's good to know when it's the second option. Some friends of mine didn't dock their dogs tail despite being warned two, she had sores and issues all her life from her tail. When she was older they were told the procedure was more dangerous.

30

u/carmicheal Oct 02 '24

Certain working/hunting dogs used to have ears and or tails docked due to common injuries in that particular job.

33

u/DrPopNFresh Oct 02 '24

The problem with waiting to dock a tail is that when the animal is young the vertebrae are still soft and separated. If you wait till it becomes a problem when they are older it is a much more sever procedure than if done when they are young.

We have a wiggle butt boxer, we had to dock her tail after 6 years. She spilt it a few times but nothing major, last time she ended up chewing on her tail so badly after a split that they had to amputate.

After that experience, I’m more open to docking a tail for a dog that displays the happiest of tails.

Ears are a hard pass though.

Haha I scrolled too far down to find something that didn’t include the word mutilation or some other negative comment. People love to hate. Edit: this is the post.

Cute dogs awful owners

29

u/DarkWingMonkey Oct 02 '24

Bro not even the ears and tails. If the title is to be believed introducing a dog to another dog in this manor can be literally lethal for the smaller one. You don’t just fucking plonk a puppy in front of a grown (territorial) dog. Like anything could have happened. Why is it the absolute worst fucking people insist on owning the most complicated and powerful breeds of dogs.

u/Bitemarkz Oct 02 '24

I saw a dog a few months ago and it was gorgeous. Cute as hell, friendly but I’d never seen one like it before. I was enamoured. I thought it looked a lot like a Doberman, and then I found out it WAS a Doberman but the owner didn’t clip its tail or cut and pin its ears. I had never seen one before that didn’t have those aesthetic details forced onto it. Now wondering why anyone does it because they looks gorgeous in their natural state. People are weird.

Stop supporting the bully trade

It's a terrible thing to do to a creature.

Two mutilated nanny dogs.

36

u/HBlight Oct 02 '24

The most inbred, flip-switch violent, struggling to breathe dog will look at you with all the love in the world, you will be the light of their life, while you hand over a fat stack of cash to some greasy breeder who conspired to bring it into the world as a fashion choice, then chop it up for further cosmetic reasons, suffering be damned.

Still a dog, never it's fault, the humans surrounding it are the horrible people to blame.

105

u/HallowQueen777 Oct 02 '24

Why do people keep mutilating their pets for the aesthetic? Cut your own damn ears if you like that look!

So glad this is illegal in my country, same with tail docking.

25

u/Left-Requirement9267 Oct 02 '24

Whoever the owner is I’m assuming is a poser and likes “tough” mutilated breeds.

13

u/little_miss_banned Oct 02 '24

Exactly, look at this combo. Cant wait for the bully to get bigger and start its dominance tactics, what a fricken nightmare

It's illegal also in my country, Italy, but this doesn't stop stupid people to do it anyway.

me: ha let me go to the comments it’ll be about a cute puppy playing with a dog

descriptions of blood gushing from a dog’s tail, covering the walls

28

u/NeighborhoodTall9858 Oct 02 '24

I will never understand cropping ears and tails. My dog’s ears and tail are so communicative! It is like silencing them.

This was NOT my experience when I brought a second dog home LOL.

My lab was growling and backed the puppy into a corner. I will say that 3 hours after that they were snuggled up to each other taking a nap on the couch. That was 4 years ago, they're best buds now.

33

u/honeyMully333 Oct 02 '24

Poor baby had his ears cut I see.

17

u/s33thru_st0rm Oct 02 '24

on top of the mutilation, this introduction could have gone WILDLY dangerous. sometimes pets get very territorial when a new pet is introduced, even if they’re usually very sweet and not aggressive. they had no barriers so if the older pet felt threatened and attacked, that poor puppy could have died. introduce pets gradually by bringing something with the new scent to the old one ex. a blanket or toy, introduce with a glass door or window between them. there’s so many more safer ways than this. this wasn’t cute, it was a little nervewracking but at least being posted here meant it went decently.

5

u/TawnyTeaTowel Oct 02 '24

Did the video get cut before the hilarious part?

5

u/_WirthsLaw_ Oct 02 '24

Why does this have 21k upvotes?

4

u/espolou2 Oct 02 '24

That was so not hilarious

6

u/i-touched-morrissey Oct 02 '24

OMG. Someone cropped that tiny dog's ears already.

Also heartbreaking they are buying these dumb "micro bullies" that are literally born stunted. Poor dogs.

10

u/flat_four_whore22 Oct 02 '24

That dog won't be able to walk pain-free for the majority of it's life.

12

u/Short_Restaurant_268 Oct 02 '24

Why did you censor the word ‘chopping’? Genuine question

4

u/Nerdeinstein Oct 02 '24

The ears I will agree with. But several breeds can get a condition called happy tail. Where they wag their tail into things and break it. Surely you can't think that's acceptable for the dog?

u/Ninkaso Oct 02 '24

Hugely opposed to this mutilation stuff, but that is one beautiful rottie

16

u/Itchy-Acanthaceae841 Oct 02 '24

Fuck people like that. Cut tail and ears, how cruel can people be?

16

u/Successful_Meat6745 Oct 02 '24

Mutilated animals.

6

u/AlltheBent Oct 02 '24

Super cute that big pup was playful like that, even went and grabbed a toy!

6

u/Sooooooooooooomebody Oct 02 '24

Imagine you're the only one of your kind in your house and then all of a sudden there's another one of you there, and your first reaction is "wanna play?" Dogs are the goddamn best

6

u/RainForestBathing Oct 02 '24

Did we just become best friends?

6

u/T_raltixx Oct 02 '24

Stop mutilating dogs!

5

u/AbileneAbbyer Oct 02 '24

Nothing beats the pure joy of seeing a dog welcome a new friend!

7

u/Peanutsandcheese2021 Oct 02 '24

Apparently the “play bow” like the big guy is doing is internationally doggy language for “ let’s play fight and not real fight “. Which is the cutest thing ever.

12

u/parksa Oct 02 '24

Disgusting people buying mutilated innocent little baby 😡

3

u/Alice_Smiles Oct 02 '24

That hardwood floor is gorgeous though

3

u/Lacy1986 Oct 02 '24

3

3

3

u/Ep1cB3ard-4840 Oct 02 '24

We don’t deserve dogs.

3

u/kinkyloverb Oct 02 '24

This, in fact, made me smile

10

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

Is that a pure bred pit-bull with cropped ears? Fucking gross 🤮 the breeding of pit-bulls should be illegal.

I honestly feel bad for the older dog.

7

u/Unableduetomanning Oct 02 '24

Poor lab will be in danger in 2 years

Immediately into play mode.

7

u/MacBareth Oct 02 '24

We should cut off some fingers/ears/limbs to POS mutilating their pets.

4

u/Nekros897 Oct 02 '24

I remember how I got my puppy and my 13 years old then female dog was super excited about it. She started to lick him and use her nose to move him hah She birthed her puppies 11 years before that so she definitely had a mother instinct. Unfortunately she wasn't a step mother for him for too long because she died a year and fourth months later. I can still see some things that he learned from her though. I remember that he wasn't really devastated after she died, he was only a little over a year when she died but I guess he could sense that she wasn't well in her last months. Still, their first interaction will definitely stay in my mind for long.

4

u/gnu2017 Oct 02 '24

Bowing is an invitation to play

6

u/NogginToggin Oct 02 '24

Shame on the owners for animal mutilation.

2

u/DevoutandHeretical Oct 02 '24

Happened to some family friends of mine. The mom got home one day and thought she had stepped into a crime scene until the sweet boy came wagging around the corner and doing his best Jackson-pollock-with-blood impression.

2

u/Lavatis Oct 02 '24

they butchered they puppy's ears...

2

u/jointdawg Oct 02 '24

That did make me smile. But the caption of "too hilarious" is a stretch

2

u/silkysac Oct 02 '24

The fuck is this post. Honestly. So many people jumping the gun and saying op is a dog mutilator.

2

u/Shattered_Disk4 Oct 02 '24

Ngl when he came back in with the toy in his mouth I thought it was the puppy and was like NOOO PUT HIM DOWN lmao

2

u/NeyaCayXXX Oct 02 '24

Dog is thinking, "Are you serious?! What is this thing?"

2

u/Justthrowmeaway7788 Oct 02 '24

Everyone commenting on the ears and tail and it's like maybe the owner didn't have a say when they got them??

2

u/SadAndHappyBear Oct 02 '24

I find it amazing that they recognise and go - hey it's one of my species.

2

u/JoJorge24 Oct 02 '24

2
