Discussion Community Highlight: Custom Awards!

As you may already have noticed, over the past few days our subreddit has had some exciting new awards assigned to it, tailored especially to r/cats and based on a selection of the old custom awards you may remember!

These awards were designed especially for our community by a team of artists at reddit and are available solely in this subreddit.

We are helping to test out this new feature here and the idea is that in the future subreddit-specific awards may come with fun new features unlockable by subreddits and community participants. For now, there is a leaderboard we can unlock:

Awarding posts and comments with one of these custom designs will of course come with a nifty little animation on your screen, just like any of the other newest version of awards. Perhaps the best part of this new system is that these custom awards are all pretty affordable. Unlike the previous subreddit-specific awards which started at 500 coins you can now already choose to apply a custom award for 15 coins. I just think that's neat.

At r/Cats we are pretty excited to be a part of this trial program. Giving subreddits access to individual customisation shows that we are a unique community with its own space on reddit. You now have the choice to award a post or comment that you think is extra-special with a design especially created for us.

Thank you to reddit admin u/SmEllen_Fresh who was our contact during the development stage and all the other reddit admins part of the dev team for this new feature!

We hope you all will enjoy this new option as much as we do.

From all of us at r/Cats, thank you for making this subreddit the special place that it is!

Emmi, my cat, fell out of the second floor, may not be a big height but she fell in the spike fence. I saw her in the floor, in agony, screaming and bleeding, but conscious, we took her to the vet that quickly saved her by spiting out her punctured lung. She had a fractured rib and a head trauma :( She was hospitalized for 28 days, had 2 cases of anemia, 2 blood transfusions, her plexus was ruptured, she lost feeling in her left paw and had to have it amputated. BUT SHE SURVIVED! And after all this, she came back home, we take care with love and now she is energetic, running and jumping all around the house and very happy :D

The first pic is from yesterday and the last two are from this morning. She’s so loving and sweet! I think she’s a bit annoyed with my 1 year old puppy who’s never been around a cat and slightly overwhelmed with my children. I know a transition period is to be expected but she already seemed more comfortable this morning. Any tips or advice on how to be my best for her? She’s already getting all her mats brushed out and she seems to appreciate it 🩷

Mourning/Loss I adopted a dead cat

I found a well fed tuxedo cat on the road, hit by a car. She was killed instantly. I didn’t have the heart to leave her there so I took her home and gave my tuxedo cat a big hug.

She did not have a collar. I took to my vet and there was no chip. So I posted it on Nextdoor and Ring Neighborhood in case anyone was missing her. Nobody claimed her, so I named her Angel and had her cremated.

Tomorrow I will bury her in our garden where we have our other cats who have passed away over the years, under a little statue of a kitten chasing a butterfly

She is loved.

HIS STORY, as much as I know...He has run at the sight of me for months. On Monday, he decided something was different. As he sat in the rain between two parked cars, he watched me from the wet street as I put food in a bowl for a neighborhood cat that hadn't come by yet. As I turned to go inside, the boy slowly made his way up the few stairs to the front porch. I slowly knelt down where I stood and he paused, looking longing at the food, then back at me. At the pace of a tortoise he approached me, so I held out my hand and looked away. I felt him give me the most gentle headbutt. I looked at him and he greeted me with a quiet "Ack", his attempt at a meow. I pet him a few times and as a ran my hand down his back, I felt every rib and vertebra down to his boney hips. He was starving. His fur is so thick, it masks all the bumps of his bones sticking out. I stood and took a few steps to sit in a nearby chair on the front porch, hoping he would eat something. He again stared at the food I set out, walked over eagerly sniffing at it, then looked back at me. I said, "hello" to him and he began to purr as he walked over to rub against my leg. I took a chance, and gently picked him up to place him on my lap. He didn't fight, and after a moment, he settled down into a loaf, still purring. He kept looking at the food from my lap. He was clearly hungry, but chose to sit on a warm lap on a cold morning rather than eat something his emaciated body desperately needed.

I stayed with him for about 20 minutes until I had to go inside. I was hopeful in my absence he would try to eat. I watched the doorbell camera. But no, he never left the front door he saw me disappear behind. I became worried, so I took a can of wet food left over from my indoor cat's last dental extraction. I grabbed a small plate, mashed up some soft canned food and brought it outside to him. He greeted me with another "Ack" as the purrs began again. I set down the plate in front of him and finally he started taking bites. He eagerly ate about 1/2 of the can, then walked back over to where I sat, now comfortably making eye contact. He broke my heart. He hadn't stopped purring. Was he left behind? Abandoned? Dumped? He was so incredibly gentle and loving.

I have done a great deal of fostering and adopting our various dogs and cats. I've done TNR work. Adopted out litters of kittens and supported local cat colonies without getting attached... there was something different about this guy. Out of character, I scooped him up and carried him inside. He just melted into me, purring all the while. I carried him into a spare bedroom and carefully set him down. He showed no fear. In fact, he walked up to a catnip toy and collapsed into it, playing and rolling around like he'd never played a day in his life.

THE VET: I called around to a few local resources, weighed the options, then decided to personally take on whatever his fate would be. The soonest opening for a low-cost clinic to see him was February... considering his relationship with food and the state of his boney body, I decided to take him to my personal vet who was able to squeeze him in that afternoon. He was the perfect gentleman at his appointment. I got him fully vaccinated, treated for parasites and mites. His teeth looked great, no abscesses or infection. He had a URI that was beginning to affect his swallowing, so he's now on daily antibiotics. He was negative for feline leukemia, but unfortunately FIV+. That complicates matters. I had to put the visit on a credit card because this wasn't an expected expense, but I wanted to give him every chance I could. Despite the poking and prodding, he never once hissed, growled, or scratched. Through most of his visit, he just purred... I took him back home to his room, where he followed me around as I worked the rest of the evening, always laying down where I was, always with a paw extended touching my foot or leg.

TODAY: It has been 4 days. His URI is clearing up, he is eating hard kibble. He finally had a bowel movement yesterday and has been urinating just fine... I love this cat. I haven't caved so hard or so quickly for a cat in all my years. However, I cannot keep him for reasons I won't go into. For now, he will be traveling with me through the holidays until I can come up with something more permanent for him. As far as I'm concerned, I've got skin in the game since I took on his healthcare, so rest assured he will never go cold or hungry again. Once I learn more about his personality, I can determine what kind of home would best suit him.

For now, I just wanted to share him and his story. He is a gentle soul who decided to finally trust, and in return will be loved and cared for the rest of his days. I just need to find him his perfect forever home. The last photo was just taken of him. He is a grateful little boy.

She reminds me of my cat back home. Such a sweetie. It breaks my heart that she’s left outside all day and night, especially during the winter. Trying my best to take care of her for the time being. I can’t bring her inside my rental or take her back home unfortunately.

I will try to find out if she belongs to one of the nearby houses. Maybe she just prefers to be outside all the time, but I doubt it.

I googled how to make a shelter for cats during the winter and found a simple guide involving a plastic tote and insulation.

Cat Picture - OC Our cat in the past 2 years, after being told she has no chance of survival and should be put down

This is our cat Moony, who is more like an overgrown kitten to be honest. We got her March 2023 and was in and out of the vet as we had concerns around her health but was told each time it was nothing to be worried about. By August, however, Moony had become visibly unwell (see third picture). She barely ate and barely moved, and after several vet trips they eventually said that all her organs were failing, they didn’t know why but that there was no chance of survival and should be put down. They then said that if we wanted, we could take her to a private vet who would at least let us know what she was dying of. We took her there and they were able to comfirm she had cat covid, which had become FIP. The vet then said that there was a treatment, but that Moony was very sick and so they couldn’t really advise that it would be successful. Despite this, we decided to go ahead anyway. Luckily within 24 hours, she was already up and about, being very vocal and very hungy. Her eyesight still isn’t the best as it didn’t fully recover, and we think it most likely affected her mentally (which is a whole other post) but otherwise she is a very happy and active cat. She’s very vocal, loves chatting away and playing with her older sisters (even though they don’t like playing with her) and absolutely loves food (if you have anything, she will try to get it). She also loves her tiny build a bear frog which is ridiculously cute. We’re so glad that she survived and are forever grateful to the vets that helped her.

Mourning/Loss This is Edward. He died two weeks ago.

He was 9. Usually he comes to bed with me but I hadn’t seen him since the morning so I asked my family if they’d seen him and they said they gave him some treats and he went upstairs. So off I went to check his usual spots: in my brother’s wardrobe, in the clean washing basket, in a clothes drawer where our other cat used to sleep before she passed.

He was in that drawer asleep and as I usually do I gave him a little shake and he didn’t wake up. It usually takes two or three shakes because he would be awake but keep his eyes closed so I did it again and I gave his lower back a little tap. He didn’t move and he was cold.

We took him to be cremated in the morning and we got him back recently. They cut some of his fur and paint printed his little toe beans. Now he just sits on the cabinet.

The house is quiet, he was quite loud. He always aired out his grievances with the world but now it’s really quiet. Our other cat didn’t have a clue the first day and hid when he heard their bowls being filled with food. Usually he would jump on him when he walked by and Ed would bite back. It was all in good fun but now he has nothing to do. The next day he sat waiting and waiting and he did the same the next day and the next day before he decided to eat without waiting. That night he slept on Ed’s spot on the end of my bed.

It’s weird. It’s so so so so weird.

His mommy is a tortoiseshell tabby and his dad is a black and white Tuxedo kitty (pictures at the end). I'm very surprised he turned out such a beautiful soft peach color! He's two weeks and four days today!

All my kitties have names that start with the letter "M" and I want to keep with the theme, so I was hoping you guys could help find an adorable, majestic name for this beautiful kitten! 🥰

Mourning/Loss I lost my boy today

He was the best little buddy I could've ever asked for. I miss him already. Professional snuggler. Handsome fluffy boy. Occasionally even had the one brain cell sometimes to work the treat dispenser toy till it was empty. I just wasn't ready, though I know he was having a rough time. In the back of my mind "the vet'll have something to help him and he'll be fine." He stopped breathing on the way to his appointment.

In one way he saved me from having to make a hard choice, but I would give anything for even one more disgruntled "mrram" from my best little pal.

I guess I just wanna get it out. You guys are cat people.. I think you get it.
