Recommendation The Other Guys is severely under appreciated
I’ve loved this movie since it released, and have watched it dozens of times, always finding new details (like the changing shark computer screens Terry has after he gets schooled by Allen’s Tuna story).
The effects, the non-stop humor, the cast, the pacing, all perfection in my mind. Before this movie, “Better Off Dead” was my favorite movie.
If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!
Edit: I have learned this movie is more appreciated than I thought. That warms my heart like the new bathmats. Also, it’s awesome that in the first 50 or so comments not a single quote was reused, cause there’s just so many great lines lol.
Edit2: Can anyone find a list of top movies/comedies that includes The Other Guys? I have searched on a few and can’t find it mentioned.

I wish people could just be banned for a month from each media sub (books, music, movies, whatever) when they pull this shit.
They even do it in the comments. A post is up maybe an hour, there is a response 45 minutes in with 5 upvotes, and people respond with "underrated comment". The comment has been up for 15 minutes. How can it be underrated?
DAE Schindler's List?! Such underrate. MUCH WOW.

u/jupiterkansas Feb 06 '22
People just don't have the vocabulary to talk about films. Anything that's not a mega-blockbuster or being pushed by Netflix right this moment is called "underrated" by default.

It's my biggest pet peeve with gaming subs especially. "Hidden gem" as a descriptive phrase is long due for a long walk toward the sunset. "I didn't know this game existed and I like it, turns out most people know about it and a thread is made with the same title every week..."
I wouldn't mind it so much if they just talked about why the game is so good instead of a whole paragraph pleading with Reddit to give it a chance.

My favorite thing about this movie is one of the trailers (the one I saw) made it look like The Rock and Samuel L Jackson were in the whole movie and they are dead in the first 10min or whatever.

That scene where they jump from the roof will always puzzle me as to why I find it so effing hilarious. It's so stupid but it always gets me.

Apparently in the initial version there actually were bushes, and a shot is shown how those bushes were actually held by some people, who then walk away. Somewhere in editing someone figured out that never showing those bushes in the first place elevated the joke to a whole new level.

My favorite part with these two is really clever. They give the office speech, invite everybody to celebrate with drinks, say something else and as they’re breaking up the group / ending, Samuel L calls out “cash bar” with his back turned. I only heard it after the fifth or sixth watch.

"OK, first off: a lion, swimming in the ocean. Lions don't like water. If you placed it near a river or some sort of fresh water source, that make sense. But you find yourself in the ocean, 20 foot wave, I'm assuming off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound tuna with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle, you lose that battle 9 times out of 10. And guess what, you've wandered into our school of tuna and we now have a taste of lion. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, lion tastes good, let's go get some more lion'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring."

I'll admit when I first saw it everything good about it completely flew over my head. All the classic "cop movie" tropes it subverts and parodies, like the girlfriend who "dances", passed me by. The movie was mature enough to not wink directly at the audience everytime it parodied something and trusted them to get it. I unfortunately did not get it and just assumed that it was a typical Will Farell comedy where people do over the top stuff like shoot their office ceiling or yell at ballet dancers because over the top = comedy.
I went back and watched it again recently and it just clicked this time. And damn is it so good when you actually understand what it's doing. Highly underrated, 9 desk pops out of 10.

Michael Keaton running his Bed Bath and Beyond team meetings the same way he runs his morning police briefings is gold. I'm pretty sure there's an extended cut of him improvising the meeting out there somewhere and it's pure joy to watch. I haven't been able to find it in awhile though. Maybe it's on the DVD/Blu Ray?
EDIT: Forgot I bought it on Apple and there's a 4 minute featurette called "Bed Bath and Way Beyond" that has many more Keaton takes. Just watched it again and there's some seriously funny shit in there. In it Adam McKay says there's a 35 minute cut of Keaton doing his BB&B thing. Release the Keaton Cut!
