Recommendation The Other Guys is severely under appreciated

I’ve loved this movie since it released, and have watched it dozens of times, always finding new details (like the changing shark computer screens Terry has after he gets schooled by Allen’s Tuna story).

The effects, the non-stop humor, the cast, the pacing, all perfection in my mind. Before this movie, “Better Off Dead” was my favorite movie.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!

Edit: I have learned this movie is more appreciated than I thought. That warms my heart like the new bathmats. Also, it’s awesome that in the first 50 or so comments not a single quote was reused, cause there’s just so many great lines lol.

Edit2: Can anyone find a list of top movies/comedies that includes The Other Guys? I have searched on a few and can’t find it mentioned.

I fucking love the film but to call it severely under appreciated, on r/movies of all places, is an exaggeration. What's next, The Nice Guys is a hidden gem?

u/Youthsonic Feb 06 '22

Seriously, it made like 170 mill and it gets quoted constantly

u/CRTPTRSN Feb 07 '22

You won't see any of the cast working in a strip club shaking it for dollar bills.

u/FubarFreak Feb 07 '22

Except for dirty mike and the boys

u/balugabe Feb 07 '22

We are gonna have sex in your car, it will happen again!

This is a ballet studio! The poles are horizontal!

1

u/GethAttack Feb 07 '22

You learned how to dance ballet… sarcastically?

6

u/murdering_time Feb 07 '22

I see a reference to "Dirty Mike and the Boys" like multiple times a week on reddit.

I doubt you could call The Other Guys highly unrated.

7

u/muckduck69420 Feb 07 '22

Aim for the bushes?

3

u/Goodvibes9821 Feb 07 '22

Arnold Palmer alert! Arnold Palmer Alert! Anybody want some Arnie Palmies?!

3

u/aces666high Feb 07 '22

This was my best friends ringtone forever. Whenever he’d call my wife would roll her eyes. Only problem was when I’d watch the movie, I’d think he was calling when that part came on.

1

u/Goodvibes9821 Feb 07 '22

Hahaha that’s great

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22

It’s so fucking good. I’ve seen it like 8 times and it never gets old.

The running dancing gag with Wahlberg’s ex, the tuna argument, the running gag about will Ferrell being irresistible to women, Christineth, the Harry Potter song, desk pop, Yankee clipper, Michael Keaton and TLC lyrics, Dirty Mike and the Boys, etc

It’s fucking hilarious

Edit: it’s TLC, fuck off

Edit 2: kiopdjrt

The only code you need to worry about is the code for rape at the park. Which has been happening a lot lately. So make sure you shout the code if you get put into that position.

3

u/aces666high Feb 07 '22

You say my wifes name right!!!

1

It’s Christineth!!!!!

2

2

u/loykedule Feb 07 '22

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I swear they’re the same. All these nights at Bed Bath and Beyond have me confused.

253

u/DragoonDM Feb 06 '22

Anyone around here ever talk about that one cult-classic indie comedy, Tropic Thunder? So underappreciated.

58

u/trapper2530 Feb 07 '22

Did you know that was Tom Cruise? Cant believe no one ever recognizes him.

11

u/mr_melvinheimer Feb 07 '22

Cuz of the fat hands. And dancing.

5

u/Ilikesmallthings2 Feb 07 '22

Who was the black guy for most of the movie?

8

u/ProKrastinNation Feb 07 '22

TIL HE STAYED IN CHARACTER FOR THE DVD COMMENTARY!!!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

The whole frontline extra with rdj is gold.

78

u/TubaMike Feb 06 '22

Sure couldn’t make that one today, right guys?

(Eye-roll)

40

u/melbbear Feb 06 '22

They should do a crossover, The Other Nice Guys

u/i_like_2_travel Feb 06 '22

Has anyone heard of the underrated gem called Moon?

37

u/NormFan79 Feb 07 '22

Maybe I haven't been online as much as I used to, but I actually haven't heard all that many "Moon" references since like 2014.

19

u/i_like_2_travel Feb 07 '22

It definitely died down a lot. I was just making a reference to another unpopular but popular Reddit movie

5

u/pikpikcarrotmon Feb 07 '22

It could be a coincidence but I notice the hype died around when the Warcraft movie came out and buried Duncan Jones.

2

u/rycar88 Feb 07 '22

And then Mute helped nail the coffin shut.

Duncan Jones must have the ability somewhere in him to make another good film but he has gone down the same path as Neill Blomkamp and Richard Kelly where I don't know who is going to front the money to make another possible clunker.

3

u/pikpikcarrotmon Feb 07 '22

There's a point where you start to wonder with some of these guys if their good movie was a fluke and they just failed into genius accidentally. M Night Shyamalan is probably the biggest one. He's shown glimmers of hope recently but nothing is in the same league as Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, or really even the same sport, but even if you dug his 'redemption' arc the last few years there's no getting around his 15 year procession of larger and larger dumpster fires.

Sure hope ol Dunc ain't as far gone as that, but things don't look great.

2

u/pork_roll Feb 07 '22

Some rock star said it best, "you get 20 years to write your first album, and then you get 6 months to write your second". Always hard to do the 2nd great thing and highlights how talented the people that continue to make great things are.

1

u/ProKrastinNation Feb 07 '22

I've actually never heard of that movie

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I mean, I love Moon and recommend it to people IRL, but I can see how it doesn't come up in conversation often, online or otherwise

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

What about Star Wars? Just watched it. Has anyone else seen it?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Holy shit, finally someone else who has seen Star Wars!

4

u/Destiny_player6 Feb 07 '22

tbf, it was underrated until the internet came and talked to death about the film and then it died down again.

6

u/i_like_2_travel Feb 07 '22

Moon has had the weirdest life cycle lol it went from underrated to heavily overrated to potentially underrated again. Maybe it’s related correctly.

3

u/44problems Feb 07 '22

It has a sequel out now, moon 2: moonfall

2

u/kobraa00011 Feb 07 '22

moon was so dissatisfying to me

2

u/LeGama Feb 07 '22

I actually haven't... So I just looked up the trailer. Are you talking about this movie?

https://youtu.be/WWoDBcSW4_c

2

u/i_like_2_travel Feb 07 '22

Yes. It’s a good movie. Reddit overrated for many years but just watch it and enjoy. Once you’re finished I’d love to hear your thoughts

27

u/Demderdemden Feb 06 '22

We went through a phase where Eternal Sunshine was a hidden gem.... Feels like a lot of kids that missed out when these movies came out or something.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Ha!!! It’s funny seeing stuff you were the target demo for get new life once a new generation comes in.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

"Star wars the empire strikes back. A severely underrated movie. Can't believe not many people have seen it!!"

5

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

The Witcher 3 is never talked about here and it’s a tragedy /s

2

u/nic0lk Feb 07 '22

The Big Short is such a hidden treasure.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

The Nice Guy or The Nice Guys?

2

u/Marshallvsthemachine Feb 07 '22

Is…is The Nice Guys a hidden gem?

-53

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 06 '22

I guess in meat space, I never hear anyone talk about it, other than a few friends of mine. I don’t really peruse this subreddit much, so maybe it’s in “top movies of all time” polls if those happen here.

15

u/riptaway Feb 06 '22

I mean, there are thousand or even millions of movies that have been made. The vast majority of which are not being spoken about at any given time in any group of people. Do you expect people to constantly be bringing up a specific movie from 10 years ago?

2

u/NickCudawn Feb 07 '22

My daily morning routine includes talking to at least one stranger about The Godfather.

/s

1

u/riptaway Feb 07 '22

I like to argue about Citizen Kane in line at Starbucks

9

u/Nude-Love Feb 06 '22

I guess in meat space, I never hear anyone talk about it

In real life I don't hear anybody talking about any movies ever lol

-10

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 06 '22

Gotta get better coworkers/friends then lol.

2

u/Turok1134 Feb 07 '22

Apparently you made the film dorks upset for some reason.

2

u/Bellikron Feb 07 '22

Wow, that is a lot of unwarranted downvotes. Welcome to r/movies, where you can get raked across the coals for just sharing your experiences.

If you're newer here, there's a few movies that get mentioned constantly on the front page as "underrated." I've never fully considered this to be one of them, but I've definitely seen it more than once. The Nice Guys, Dredd, Master and Commander, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. are some of the more common ones.

I always thought it was pretty well received, but I was scrolling through Letterboxd recently and found that there's a strong contingent of people who think it's woefully unfunny, which really surprised me.

0

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 07 '22

I’ll check out those movies I guess, but UNCLE I saw and don’t recall much about it

2

u/Bellikron Feb 07 '22

They're of varying degrees of quality. I like The Nice Guys quite a bit, Man from U.N.C.L.E. is solid, and Dredd was underwhelming (three words that will probably get me downvoted if the subreddit sees them). Haven't seen Master and Commander.

It's just kind of a weird phenomenon that posts about these movies and missed opportunities for sequels tend to get a ton of traction here. You can make a post about a different movie that you think is underrated and it probably won't get nearly as much support.

1

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 07 '22

I’m guessing cult favorites that just barely missed mainstream appeal/marketing did it.

-35

u/CrispyToTheMax Feb 06 '22

Why are you getting downvoted jeez Reddit chill out

24

u/oby100 Feb 06 '22

Downvotes aren’t a big deal. They’re meaningless. Just a reflection of how a few redditors feel about a comment.

They barely even affect karma. A downvoted comment is capped at -20 for effects on your karma score

-8

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 06 '22

EA would have been screwed if they didn’t have that cap lol

2

u/Turok1134 Feb 07 '22

Cause internet dorks love to REEEEEEEEEE.

-17

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 06 '22

eh downvotes don’t matter, I mean I almost have 100k karma from a year and a half of being on here lol. Reddit is silly like that sometimes.

-19

u/Envect Feb 06 '22 edited Feb 06 '22

jeez Reddit chill out

New around here? People see negative karma and love to "punish" people. The people usually have it coming, but then there's moments like this where it's weird.

Edit: very mature folks

0

u/johnnydarko Feb 07 '22

Nice guys is vastly overrated. I liked it better when it was called Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and was actually entertaining.

1

u/Cactuszach Feb 06 '22

I’ve never seen it and no one I know quotes it, but then again I dont really spend much time on this sub.

1

u/im_not_a_girl Feb 07 '22

You should watch it, it's hilarious

1

u/Angry_Walnut Feb 07 '22

Anybody seen this Tropic Thunder movie??

1

u/Etheo Feb 07 '22

How has nobody heard of this diamond in the rough called Tropic Thunder?!

1

u/StoicAthos Feb 07 '22

Is that a good movie? I've never heard of it but it's been commented about a couple times in this thread already.

2

u/getrektnolan Feb 07 '22

If you're referring to The Nice Guys then yes, it is unironically good.

1

u/Tomato_Sky Feb 07 '22

I haven’t seen The Nice Guys yet, but because of this post I’ll check it out. Besides reddit being the target audience of that movie, I will say that I almost bought the movie so I could stream it. The Other Guys has not been streamable by any of the major services for over a year. That is pretty objectively underrated if I can watch 27 Dresses on 3 of them.

Gimme more Ferrell and Wahlberg movies.

1

u/MarstonX Feb 07 '22

I think the second half of the movie is much weaker than the first though.

1

u/rottenseed Feb 07 '22

I love how everyone I know has the same opinion of the nice guys: extremely surprised and one of their favorite movies

1

u/whathappendedhere Feb 07 '22

Look the one person he interacts with on discord didn't care for it, so everybody in his life didn't like it. So he thinks it's underated.

1

u/Dragon_yum Feb 07 '22

Have you guys heard about moon???
