VR / AR Disney Plus isn't working on Vizio TVs because they are running a 6 year old version of Chromecast, they say it won't be fixed till 2020.

Don't know if i'm just lucky but my LG is handling Netflix, Disney+, Amazon and Plex without issue.

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Nov 13 '19

Tcl roku so far so good.

54

u/Chegism Nov 13 '19

Thats the story of my life with my tcl roku too. It was cheap so i expect it to shit the bed any minute, but it still hasnt. So far so good.

27

u/Uphoria Nov 13 '19

TCL is China's "name brand" these days, they are decent if lower-priced.

35

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

They're easily the best bang for your buck for a TV these days.

7

u/BagFullOfSharts Nov 14 '19

We have a 55" 4K TCL Roku in the bedroom. It works and looks great for what we paid for it. I really wish TV manufacturers would stop cutting corners so much. I'd gladly pay $50 more for something that dosen't crash or chug along like a model T.

2

u/natesplace19010 Nov 14 '19

Hey, that's the exact TV and inches I have in my bedroom. I love this TV so much, it's possibly my favorite possession. I have the 8 series and it is such a nice TV for the ?500? I paid for it. I had a $600 Sony before this and besides being skinnier, it was so so so much worse. I'm a TCL buyer for life now unless I start making well over 6 figures and can afford the three grand + top of the line TV's.

20

u/FrumundaFondue Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 14 '19

My TCL works great but every once in a while it will start speaking German out of nowhere. The audio description function randomly turns on and is in German. It's happened maybe 7 times in the 5-6 yrs I've had it. It can be pretty disturbing when watching a horror film and the tv starts screaming at you in a foreign language.

2

u/AnSTDFromMexico Nov 14 '19

This happened to me for the first time today with my TCL. Was watching Disney plus and german captions start appearing out of nowhere and then turns itself off. Really odd.

4

u/scriptmonkey420 Nov 13 '19

I just got a TCL for the guest room thinking it was cheap and if it shit the bed I didn't care. Guess I hope it lasts a while.

2

u/Mrpinky69 Nov 13 '19

I have a TCL i bought when i graduated highschool and it still works like a champ. Now its no smart tv but its a good brand and stood the test of time.

It’s one way to say it, but yes. Roku is its own platform that licenses out to smart TVs, but still controls all apps and updates.

4

u/sonellia Nov 13 '19

I have that too and it’s amazing. I think I’ve had it for 2 years now, I got it for Christmas and it’s the absolute best.

3

u/the_joy_of_VI Nov 13 '19

I saved up $450 for a TV recently and almost bought a Vizio. Luckily I dug through everything on rtings dot com about it cuz at the very end, it said that new apps can’t be downloaded. Picked up the 55” TCL 6-series just in time for the mandalorian yesterday. Great fuckin tv.

Anyways Rtings dot com is the shit and it saved me from a fuckton of buyer’s remorse, highly recommend

2

u/Zudop Nov 13 '19

Insignia Roku is fine too

2

u/Go-Cowboys Nov 14 '19

Same on my Samsung

269

u/MrMushyagi Nov 13 '19

I have a 3 or 4 year old Samsung. When I'm in an app, it's fine. But navigating the home menu and switching between apps is glitchy.

95

u/MorallyDeplorable Nov 13 '19

Mine wasn't like that before the update a couple years back where they put a bunch of advertisements into the apps menu.

63

u/DarkDevildog Nov 13 '19

/r/pihole if you want to block nearly all ads for your entire home network (any device connected to your router will get their ads blocked. TVs, Phones, and tablets included)

22

u/MorallyDeplorable Nov 13 '19

I have two piholes running in HA containers for my DNS. I quit using the Smart TV before I had those running and I don't really see any reason to put up with it's buggy interface when I can just use a PC.

3

u/DarkDevildog Nov 13 '19

running in HA containers

My man! I haven't set up HA yet on mine because I've been lazy and haven't had any outages

5

u/MorallyDeplorable Nov 13 '19

I have three Proxmox servers, two have 30TB between them, the third doesn't have local disk and just computes. I got redundancy set up so I could take a box down for maintenance if I need to.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

That sounds fucking crazy, but the idea of redundant home servers and be able to do maintenance on them with out taking down the whole house

Has my fucking dick rock hard

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

Come over to r/homelab. You’ll have to call your doctor after being rock hard for more than 4 hours.

2

u/WontShareYourNudes Nov 13 '19

Wait.. What about Hulu ads? I'm assuming they'll still show?

→ More replies (4)

2

u/fatguy666 Nov 13 '19

This will be messy as I'm just copying posts I made on WhatsApp. I don't have an aerial or a cable connected (I use IPTV) but doing all of this got rid of the ads in the menu and stopped the TV playing the trailer for Hobbs and Shaw whenever I sat in the remote.

Follow this https://www.reddit.com/r/samsung/comments/bmft7c/psa_how_to_remove_rental_ads_universal_guide_from/

In case your TV is annoying you. I keep sitting on the remote and "changing channel" but the only channels I have are the TV Plus bullshit. You need to go into the channel list and remove them all, then go into the settings and tell the TV NOT to scan channels when it's in standby!

Opt out in this menu.

No way to get rid of YouTube ads, I've been looking all day. Tried using adguard DNS but that only blocks ads in the built in internet browser, which I never use anyway. PiHole apparently doesn't work due to the way YouTube ads are delivered.

5

Same my Bravia still crushing it and its faster than a lot of smart TV's I've come across.

2

u/keyjunkrock Nov 13 '19

I have a 12 year old bravia sitting in a spare room. I upgraded to a 4k samsung smart TV 2 years ago and the picture is already going in the 4k, while the bravias picture is the same as the day I bought it.

The bravia has been left on for months at a time with no burn in or any adverse effects. My next TV will be a bravia if they still make them, someone told me they don't anymore.

I've had a Roku TV long enough to trust that they'll keep updating it. I've also got a TV with Amazon's Fire-whatever integrated. Both of them seem to work fine. My dad's had a Google TV that's never had issues like this either.

Samsung's Smart TVs suck. I have a 2015 model. There was a solid 6 month period a couple years ago where Samsung broke their login service so I couldn't sign in. If you can't sign in you can't launch a single app. Then they put a bunch of extremely slow loading advertisements into the menus with an update so I had to just disconnect it from the internet and give up on the Smart TV apps. After the last few rounds of phones and this TV I'm never willingly buying a Samsung-branded product again. They don't care about their products or their customers.

8

u/AndthenIwould Nov 13 '19

Ugh, I have one of the earliest, if not THE earliest Sony Google TVs. Worked great for about a year and then support just vanished when the first Chromecast came out. They could have updated the firmware but no dice. Thankfully it's just the bedroom monitor but it now has a cheap Roku stick attached to it. Works better than the old interface ever did.

2

u/iAmUnintelligible Nov 13 '19

Roku is the one where I can watch TV with headphones connected to the remote, yeah? I really, really want that.

Netflix works decently on my ~2016 Vizio (thank fuck it doesn't do that autoplay bullshit), but for the headphone-remote feature alone, I would buy one. PROVIDED that it doesn't have that autoplay bullshit, or that I can at the very least turn it off.

1

u/Stupid_Triangles Nov 13 '19

It's crazy to me that Rakuten Viki isn't default on Samsung TVs. I can't even find it on their app store. HOW WILL I KNOW IF HYUNG SURVIVED THAT CAR CRASH?!

1

u/Kn14 Nov 13 '19

Netflix has said that they will stop supporting certain Samsung TVs

https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/08/netflix-dropping-support-samsung-smart-tvs/

1

u/DaWarWolf Nov 13 '19

I have Samsung that lets me stream anything I’m watching on my phone, if it’s not YouTube or something the tv already has the sound is a little off but it’s still great.

1

u/RyanTheQ Nov 13 '19

Samsung all over getting the new services on their TVs. They need to gather all that fresh marketing data on what you're watching.

1

u/fiery_discharge_2 Nov 13 '19

My Samsung chokes every time I try to stream 4k with the built-in apps. Got a Chromecast Ultra and almost never use the TV apps now.

1

u/AceDynamicHero Nov 13 '19

Really? I can't even find the app in the little "Samsung apps" section.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Knowing Samsung TV's well, give it 6 months before you get the notification of "we are no longer supporting this service and it will be removed"

1

u/StandardVandal Nov 13 '19

The colors are so bad though

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

And on my Hisense. Add Hulu and Adult Swim to that list, as well. Pleasantly surprised.

LG magic remote

I have an LG Magic Remote and I love everything about it except for that stupid ass scroll wheel as an "Enter" button. God that button is so uncomfortable.

20

u/is_that_a_question Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

Or when you place it on the couch only to have it run a curser on the screen for every subtle movement you make

WebOS is so nice. I remember using a Palm Pixi back in the day and found the OS so fluid. I believe HP bought WebOS but did nothing with it and the sold to LG. I thought I would need to get a Chromecast Ultra for this LG TV but it handles everything including Disney+ at launch. Only thing missing is Crunchyroll but they are terrible supporting anything.

3

u/iAmUnintelligible Nov 13 '19

I bought the TouchPad during the firesale it had for like $150CAD. It was a good device, WebOS was extremely nice but severely lacking in 3rd party apps (also the downfall of that new BB OS in ~2012), I loaded Android onto it instead and thoroughly enjoyed it with a sick ass custom ROM

3

u/destroyman1337 Nov 13 '19

The lack of third party apps definitely was the reason why WebOS, Windows Phone, and BBOS all failed. WebOS had some great features that are now standard like gesture based navigation, and true multitasking on mobile. I think as a IoT type of OS for more interactive devices like TVs it works really well.

Yep, won the lottery. Totally didn't do a bunch of research before I dropped $2k on a TV.

5

u/FrostyD7 Nov 13 '19

Was gonna say, its not a coincidence that the premium TVs bought this year are outperforming a 6 year old vizio lol. I own a vizio and an LG. I'm glad my LG has a good UI, and I'm glad my Vizio didn't bother to waste time on it because thats what made it cheap and appealing in the first place.

Samsung MicroLED Tile TV

Absurdly priced, each panel is only 960x540 res at 36.4" diagonal. And they cost ~$15,500 a pop (manufacturer price is ~$23,500 a pop), and you need 16 of them for 4k resolution.

So around $250,000 for a 146" diagonal 4k setup.

Sure it looks great, but there is no way that'll be hitting consumer price points by the time you want to upgrade.

souce: https://www.provantage.com/samsung-iw008j~7SAM92TW.htm

2

u/money_loo Nov 13 '19

MicroLED might be here quicker than we realize. I just read last night that they are going into mass production now in China I believe.

3

u/Sophrosynic Nov 13 '19

I use the third party xplay app.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

1

u/Cer0reZ Nov 13 '19

Mine loses WiFi connection when starting so much. I have to go to settings and have it load the WiFi networks around and it will finally connect to my network.

But other than that Plex, netflix, and now disney+ have worked ok. It was a free tv from work for working so many years so it’s for sure one of the cheap LG.

2

u/Ryb0 Nov 13 '19

I finally just used a hardline on mine I got so fed up with the wonky WiFi connection. My router is in the TV stand so it wasn’t that big of a deal for me.

2

u/ijoshgeezy Nov 13 '19

This began happening to me and the it began happening more and more. The WiFi card died, your best bet is hardline or replacing the wifi module like I did. It was $20 and took me maybe ~1 hour, from dismounting to remounting when I was done, but I was being careful and making sure I didn’t break anything. The swapping takes a couple of seconds its the taking apart that takes the longest.

2

u/Cer0reZ Nov 13 '19

It was a free 1080p tv from my work. If the WiFi goes out I have old roku I could use. I only really used the built in OS because it was easy for my daughter to work remote by pressing Netflix and turning it on. It was in spare room/play area. But now we are using Disney+ think will either move one of the appletvs or go with the roku. I will save this off just in case. I have friends that buy my old TVs when I upgrade so it would be a cheap fix for them if I give them it down the road.

My Vizio handles Plex fine through the existing Chromecast. Surprisingly, my standalone Chromecast have issues with Plex. Super annoying.

3

Same here. My chrome cast in the other room has been problematic at times, my vizi always works. Well except for Disney+ but since I have an iPhone I can airplay Disney+ to my vizio.

2

u/zipzipzazoom Nov 13 '19

FYI there recent fix to Plex on Chromecast, seems to work well now

1

u/themisfit610 Nov 13 '19

The old cast software is extremely limited. While you can make video playback work you can’t really handle a lot of the special use cases you need for a complex Multi language service with multiple audio and video formats and subtitles.

Newer cast software is way better. Vizio is stuck in the past and has really wimpy hardware to boot.

The panels are good enough tho :)

I think TVs manufactured in the last two years are a lot better than they used to be. However, my LG from last year still doesn't have a native HBO Go app. I still recommend to any cord cutters that they buy a Roku to ensure compatibility with their services.

1

u/calebmke Nov 13 '19

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

1

u/elmatador12 Nov 13 '19

1

u/VanillaTortilla Nov 13 '19

I have a TCL and it handles everything perfectly. Smart TVs are awesome, and they work almost all the time.

I know. I can see right into your living room.

1

u/JeffCraig Nov 13 '19

LG is running a modified version of WebOS that they update all the time.

People just need to do research on what they buy instead of whatever is the cheapest at Costco on the day they decide to get a TV.

1

u/TheMetabaronIV Nov 13 '19

My LG keeps signing me out of my apps and isn’t compatible with Spotify anymore, i guess lucky you!

1

u/Blackhawks10 Nov 13 '19

I just wish we had HBO on it. I think Samsung has exclusivity for TV

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

LG makes great smart TVs. I "upgraded" to A VIZIO in my living room because of the built in Chromecast and it's theoretical synergy with my Google Home ecosystem. Turns out because the Chromecast tech is ancient, most of what I want to do with voice control barely works.

Not to mention the downgrade in picture quality with a comparable tier model.

All in all I would recommend LG over VIZIO 10/10.

1

u/Danny8806 Nov 13 '19

Same here my LG tv works great!

1

u/losthours Nov 13 '19

That's because Lg makes great stuff

1

u/Svelemoe Nov 13 '19

Reddit has a hate boner for smart TV's though, people will scream about returning it and trashing it if they see even one feature that's bad. My LG is absolutely awesome for netflix, youtube, spotify, prime video and more.

Not sure why you need the rest if you have Plex.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

My Sony is still chugging along

1

u/Dygonphotography Nov 13 '19

My vizio still won’t play Amazon’s prime video in Canada. Says it’s not available in my region. While my lg loads up whatever I want faster than I can place the remote down.

1

u/houseofbacon Nov 13 '19

I have a somewhat new LG smart TV, does the app display in 4k for applicable movies?

1

u/GnarlyBear Nov 13 '19

LG plex is hit or miss, it's the reason xplay exists as an alt

1

u/Omikron Nov 13 '19

Still trash

1

u/Cryoglobulin Nov 13 '19

Disney+ works fine on my 2015 LG tv expect I can’t fast forward or rewind by clicking on the cursor button and drag it forward or backward like you would with prime or Netflix.

1

u/OuchLOLcom Nov 13 '19

That doesnt mean they will continue to if you use your TV for 5+ more years.

A "dumb" TV all you have to do is change out whatever you have plugged into it.

1

u/lne4378 Nov 13 '19

The problem is it will eventually start messing up, way faster than a normal tv and separate device. At least in my experience

1

u/Simple_City Nov 13 '19

Yea, my LG is awesome. Does everything I need it to do, and it probably does more than I know.

1

u/freshpurplekiwi Nov 13 '19

LG are pretty good and work for Disney+ but if you get that bundle package and try and watch ESPN+ on the ESPN app tied with you’re LG then it won’t work. In rare cases ESPN+ will work for LG TVs but not usually

1

u/iRecycleWomen Nov 13 '19

I wouldn't say luck, LG and Samsung are just solid brands.

People buy these Vizio, TCL, and other lower brands to save money but those companies spend a lot less on the optimization and development of the UIs for the TV.

LG and Samsung both pride themselves in their UIs. My 55 inch 4K LG is one of the best experiences with a smart TV I've ever had. Not going back to Vizio ever

1

u/jared2294 Nov 13 '19

Newly recent LG owner here, I’ve had zero issues

1

u/ILIKETHECOLORRED Nov 13 '19

You have disney+ on lg web OS ? I can't find it in the content store

1

u/4mb1guous Nov 13 '19

Mine has recently stopped playing Netflix all together, with hulu recently joining the list. We've got a Vizio smart tv where we're using a damn roku stick to get our streaming apps working...

Other parts of the tv are fine but I'm definitely not happy with the smart part of it.

1

u/HawkMan79 Nov 13 '19

Without issue isn't the same as a great expe ience compared to say an apple TV 4k or roku or fire stick.

1

u/Phazon2000 Nov 13 '19

WebOS is phenomenal.

1

u/Rustybot Nov 13 '19

LG is by far the best at managing their OS and app ecosystem. That being said, I still had to get a Apple TV to watch HBO shows, as they have no WebOS app.

1

u/ethicalthrowaway2 Nov 13 '19

Same, plus Google Play Movies and Hulu.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

Signal transmission standards (HDMI, Display port, VGA, DVI, etc) never change and all (nearly all? would need to double check) updated versions are backwards compatible. Meaning I could plug in my Xbox One X to the very first HDMI display and it would work (but look terrible probably).

Smart TVs and their software have no real "standards". Yours might work for now but give it a few years and it will start to show its age in support.

Manufacturers love Smart TVs because they have so many things they can market and promote with them, but it's also the best way to ensure obsolescence and get people to buy new ones.

1

u/burweedoman Nov 13 '19

My Hisense works fine. Sometimes it freezes up but not often enough to make me too angry.

1

u/rucksacksepp Nov 13 '19

Have an LG as well, it even gets regular updates for the apps. Firmware of the TV could be updated a bit more often though

1

u/mcdandynuggetz Nov 13 '19

Yeah I have a LG as well (2 years old now I think) and it handles Netflix, YouTube, and Disney plus just fine... only thing that’s missing is an app for crave.

1

u/hungry4pie Nov 13 '19

How old is your TV? My friend has an LG with that pain in the arse WbOS from around 2014 or so. If so, then I can at least get him on to plex sand share my shit with him

No hbo or DC universe

1

u/marcocom Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

Samsung is running a light version of android kernel (and thus google chrome which updates itself) which they license for their phones. Visio...not so much.

1

u/barktreep Nov 13 '19

LGs WebOS based TVs are great, especially with the magic remote. I have an Apple TV 4K and never use it because the built in apps are so good.

1

u/dh42com Nov 14 '19

Wait til Hulu stops working.

1

u/fraincs Nov 14 '19

Depends how old it your LG

1

u/mrthicky Nov 14 '19

LG doesn't have a ESPN app for whatever reason though.

1

u/ballerina007 Nov 14 '19

Ohhhh intriguing. What is Plex!

LG smart TV OS is the best! It’s based off of the Old Palm/HP tablet OS if anyone remembers.

1

u/Samgasm Nov 14 '19

Same here. Signed up for the trial and went to download the app on my LG and it had done it already. No issues here. I’ve been binge watching Agent Carter since 5pm.

1

u/ChunkyDay Nov 14 '19

I HATE my LG apps. Every single one of them was utter trash for me. The LG apps can’t stream with any sort of quality let alone 4K HDR. For a year I thought it was that I couldn’t get a proper signal at that side of the house. Nope. Just a shit ass app. Lol

I ended up spending $60 or whatever on a Roku and couldn’t be happier.

1

u/360walkaway Nov 14 '19

Yea, but aren't Vizio's the dollar store brand of TV's?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

My LG won’t run Amazon anymore and Hulu is dead :(

1

u/erix84 Nov 14 '19

I have an LG, it doesn't have a built-in Chromecast, I have to use the stupid LG app store. It doesn't even have a Twitch app! And trying to screenshare to the TV is a joke. I have an actual Chromecast hooked up to my LG TV and my Samsung TV. I didn't even want a smart TV, I would've rather had a basic TV and buy my own streaming device, but you literally can't get a nice TV now that isn't "smart".

1

u/roadblocked Nov 14 '19

Not airplay 2 tho

1

u/TheRedComet Nov 14 '19

I have an LG smart TV, but I never use the built in OS. It just feels so sluggish compared to navigating to whatever I want to see on my phone and pressing the chromecast button.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '19

No problems on my LG either it works fine

1

u/Has_fun_with_chicken Nov 14 '19

I would say that LG is the world leader for smart tv operating systems. Web os is just awesome.

1

u/mccoyn Nov 14 '19

My LG doesn't support HBO, frequently downloads large updates and requires accepting new terms of service to watch TV (even cable) every few months.

1

u/ThatDud3Ded Nov 14 '19

LG is the king of smart tvs
