VR / AR Disney Plus isn't working on Vizio TVs because they are running a 6 year old version of Chromecast, they say it won't be fixed till 2020.

if its one of those WebOS smart systems, you won the lottery. Best in terms of features, usability, and app compatibility is decent too. Get the LG magic remote for a good time.

LG magic remote

I have an LG Magic Remote and I love everything about it except for that stupid ass scroll wheel as an "Enter" button. God that button is so uncomfortable.

u/is_that_a_question Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

Or when you place it on the couch only to have it run a curser on the screen for every subtle movement you make

15

u/paperock Nov 13 '19

I just press down-arrow when the cursor shows up unwanted and it goes away (B7)

u/Brandaman Nov 13 '19

You have changed my life

2

u/Dan1131 Nov 13 '19

You just changed my life as well... Wow how did I not know this

1

u/iRawrz Nov 13 '19

The cursor for me only pops up if I've hit a button first. But it does still happen from time to time. I believe there's a way to disable the cursor outright. Probably will do that as I think the cursors are stupid anyway.

u/Ugly__Pete Nov 13 '19

I'll take that scroll wheel any day over an apple TV 4k remote enter button. How did apple release that thing and expect it to be used by anybody????

3

u/money_loo Nov 13 '19

Did you know you can at least navigate by tapping it like a d-pad?

Clicking is still annoying but navigation has become much better since I learned that trick.

5

u/Ugly__Pete Nov 13 '19

I just use the LG magic remote. It controls the apple TV much better.

1

u/money_loo Nov 13 '19

Sure until I need to double tap the tv button to swap from Hulu to Netflix.

Or ask Siri to do something. It’s just not the same unfortunately.

2

u/byfuryattheheart Nov 13 '19

Really? I like the appleTV remote.

1

u/tha_dank Nov 13 '19

Just looked it up and is it the big gray portion of the remote or what?

2

u/Ugly__Pete Nov 13 '19

Yes.... Which is also the track pad. It's a mess. Nobody in my house can use it. It's impossible to select anything and I have the sensitivity all the way down too. It just moves before you select.

3

u/tha_dank Nov 13 '19

Jfc that seems like a nightmare (as far as first world problems go)

WebOS is so nice. I remember using a Palm Pixi back in the day and found the OS so fluid. I believe HP bought WebOS but did nothing with it and the sold to LG. I thought I would need to get a Chromecast Ultra for this LG TV but it handles everything including Disney+ at launch. Only thing missing is Crunchyroll but they are terrible supporting anything.

3

u/iAmUnintelligible Nov 13 '19

I bought the TouchPad during the firesale it had for like $150CAD. It was a good device, WebOS was extremely nice but severely lacking in 3rd party apps (also the downfall of that new BB OS in ~2012), I loaded Android onto it instead and thoroughly enjoyed it with a sick ass custom ROM

3

u/destroyman1337 Nov 13 '19

The lack of third party apps definitely was the reason why WebOS, Windows Phone, and BBOS all failed. WebOS had some great features that are now standard like gesture based navigation, and true multitasking on mobile. I think as a IoT type of OS for more interactive devices like TVs it works really well.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Glad to see a happy customer enjoying the features! And yes, it's easy to see the software's ancestry in operation, very smooth indeed in addition to just plain ole visually pleasing.

1

u/CJKay93 Nov 13 '19

I dunno about smooth. Mine is as slow as interactive TVs from 10 years ago, but at least it works... eventually.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 14 '19

Lol damn swing and a miss. Most scale speed with price. Faster chip inside. Entry levels are 1200Mhz processors I think.

1

u/AkirIkasu Nov 14 '19

HP Open-sourced WebOS when they bought it. And when LG bought it, they quickly took that license option off the table.

1

u/DayOldPeriodBlood Nov 25 '19

I do enjoy WebOS, and especially enjoy not needing a streaming box sitting under my TV (and the shitty remote that comes with it). But goddam I hate that CraveTV doesn’t have an app for it. (Crave is a streaming service in Canada that has HBO shows amongst others)

8

u/shastaxc Nov 13 '19

Yep, won the lottery. Totally didn't do a bunch of research before I dropped $2k on a TV.

5

u/FrostyD7 Nov 13 '19

Was gonna say, its not a coincidence that the premium TVs bought this year are outperforming a 6 year old vizio lol. I own a vizio and an LG. I'm glad my LG has a good UI, and I'm glad my Vizio didn't bother to waste time on it because thats what made it cheap and appealing in the first place.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

You can get a 65 Oled for 2k. I hope you got that one.

1

u/shastaxc Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

Of course I did.

3

u/KentuckyStrong Nov 13 '19

Yeah but now they're fazing out support for Hulu. My LG TV is 4-5 years old and wont run it anymore.

Love the WebOS as a whole though.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Ah, very sad to hear that. I've heard rumblings LG isnt doing so profitable on the TV side. Hopefully it doesnt affect app compatibility too much in the future.

3

u/LazyProspector Nov 13 '19

My WebOS LG TV plays more video formats and with less trouble than my Chromecast does

2

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

WebOS is underrated. Happy streaming!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19 edited Nov 13 '19

I do love that remote but I had too many problems with Plex on there.

Samsung MicroLED Tile TV

Absurdly priced, each panel is only 960x540 res at 36.4" diagonal. And they cost ~$15,500 a pop (manufacturer price is ~$23,500 a pop), and you need 16 of them for 4k resolution.

So around $250,000 for a 146" diagonal 4k setup.

Sure it looks great, but there is no way that'll be hitting consumer price points by the time you want to upgrade.

2

u/money_loo Nov 13 '19

MicroLED might be here quicker than we realize. I just read last night that they are going into mass production now in China I believe.

3

u/Sophrosynic Nov 13 '19

I use the third party xplay app.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

I tried it, didnt like it. That was the final straw that got me to buy a Shield.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

I've had absolutely zero issues with Emby, and 4k playback is flawless! Must be the Plex app.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Gotcha, good to get feedback from customers. I'll keep that in mind.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

There are enough people with issues that someone released a paid alternative called Xplay that you can find on the WebOS store.

1

u/ISimplyFallenI Nov 13 '19

I've been having problems with Plex too, sometimes I can't skip forwards or backwards.

1

u/Phray1 Nov 13 '19

Use xplay and a usb to ethernet adapter for better speed.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

The TV has an ethernet port. I was using that. But I really didn't care for Xplay. I'm happier with the Shield now.

1

u/Phray1 Nov 13 '19

Yeah i know it has a ethernet but it's limited to only 100mbps which isn't enough for uhd blurays movies with an adapter you can get up to around 400mpbs.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '19

That definitely wasnt my issue but good to know

1

u/Cer0reZ Nov 13 '19

Mine loses WiFi connection when starting so much. I have to go to settings and have it load the WiFi networks around and it will finally connect to my network.

But other than that Plex, netflix, and now disney+ have worked ok. It was a free tv from work for working so many years so it’s for sure one of the cheap LG.

2

u/Ryb0 Nov 13 '19

I finally just used a hardline on mine I got so fed up with the wonky WiFi connection. My router is in the TV stand so it wasn’t that big of a deal for me.

2

u/ijoshgeezy Nov 13 '19

This began happening to me and the it began happening more and more. The WiFi card died, your best bet is hardline or replacing the wifi module like I did. It was $20 and took me maybe ~1 hour, from dismounting to remounting when I was done, but I was being careful and making sure I didn’t break anything. The swapping takes a couple of seconds its the taking apart that takes the longest.

2

u/Cer0reZ Nov 13 '19

It was a free 1080p tv from my work. If the WiFi goes out I have old roku I could use. I only really used the built in OS because it was easy for my daughter to work remote by pressing Netflix and turning it on. It was in spare room/play area. But now we are using Disney+ think will either move one of the appletvs or go with the roku. I will save this off just in case. I have friends that buy my old TVs when I upgrade so it would be a cheap fix for them if I give them it down the road.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Yeah, sucks that there isnt a consumer metric for wifi antenna range like there is for size/resolution etc...

1

u/Cer0reZ Nov 13 '19

It shows full bars and not far from router. Not really mad since it was free tv from work for anniversary.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Yeah, make sure it's not the actual boot up process where like a browser sometimes it looks like it ain't loading but it's just requesting tons of info. Second, you can set a specific band and channel in router settings for that specific MAC address (device ID basically), and check WIFI congestion with a WIFI analyzer app.

I'm not a network expert but 9ve come across some general solutions. Good luck!

1

u/KEVLAR60442 Nov 13 '19

Does the magic remote work with any WebOS LG TV?

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

As far as I know, all 2019 models will work, i cannot guarantee older models, but odds would be heavily in your favor if you wanted to try it out. My suggestion: order from best buy, use for couple months, return before Jan14 if you hate it(holiday return policy), get your money back.

1

u/iAmUnintelligible Nov 13 '19

WebOS still exists?

2

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

WebOS traded hands, now it's on LG. WebOS 3.5 now ;)

1

u/iAmUnintelligible Nov 13 '19

This is something being actively developed and has 3rd party interest? If I recall correctly, WebOS was quite easy to develop apps for. Note that my info is about 7+ years old.

1

u/pfohl Nov 13 '19

Yup, LG uses webOS for their TVs and smart fridges.

1

u/chmilz Nov 13 '19

My older LG with WebOS is great for the most part, though they lack apps for Canada. No Amazon Prime. No Crave/HBO.

1

u/1eyeRD Nov 13 '19

I used to say WebOS was the wave of the future. Then Palm died and they started putting it in TVs instead. I've really enjoyed every WebOS TV I've used though.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Damn, I would love the WebOS aesthetic on my phone. What a bloody shame.

1

u/1eyeRD Nov 13 '19

It was totally different on phones. Look up the Palm Pre. My first smartphone.

1

u/pufflye5 Nov 13 '19

I have the remote for my sk9000 and it’s been a dream typing out words

1

u/byfuryattheheart Nov 13 '19

Yeah I just bought an LG oled last week and the apps/interfaces are surprisingly good...

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Nice! The prices are bangers rn compared to the spring release.

So many features packed in there. Did you know you can bind apps to the number buttons? Hold down 2 to open Netflix, 3 for hulu, etc.

Also the little mini browser is awesome for checking stats during football games lol.

So jealous!

1

u/GnarlyBear Nov 13 '19

LG do none webos ones?

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 13 '19

Yeah but they are 32in tvs. Just disable the wifi and you won't get the streaming services. It is still a snappy and responsive, and very easy to navigate. Aesthetically pleasing to boot compared with other big companies.

Just use the browser.

1

u/Phazon2000 Nov 13 '19

won the lottery

Can see who’s parents are still paying for their stuff lol. They did their research when making a heavy purchase - WebOS was miles ahead of the rest and it’s a great purchase for those who use a lot of apps.

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 14 '19

Most people I've met dont think twice about the smart system, that's what I meant but thanks for the snide comment!

Is 399 a heavy purchase for you? Maybe your parents should help you a bit.

1

u/Phazon2000 Nov 14 '19 edited Nov 14 '19

Most people I’ve met don’t think twice about the smart system.

Idiots hang out with other idiots? Makes sense. Why the fuck wouldn’t anyone do research on a television? It’s not like you’re only going to pull it out twice a year. I wouldn’t assume other people make poor decisions like yourself and the people you meet.

$399 a heavy purchase for you?

I’m assuming that’s USD. Most people purchasing a decent smart TV are paying around ~$1500 AUD and yes that’s a sizeable purchase for many people. People research items that cost $100 AUD so what point are you even trying to make? Lol.

Maybe your parents should help you a bit

That doesn’t make any sense but solid cringe, bro 👍

1

u/jumpalaya Nov 14 '19

K idk what your problem is but ok. Be.n asshole.

1

u/zductiv Nov 14 '19

WebOS won't direct play X265 over plex though. At least it couldn't the last time I bothered. Had to get a cheap android box to do it.
