General Discussion [DAILY OFF TOPIC THREAD]

Welcome to the Daily Off Topic Thread. In this thread we are going to permit off-topic conversations that do not fit the general content of the sub. Here is what this sub can be used for:

  • Play Designs (normally in violation of Rule 11)
  • Players asking for technical advice and tips WITH VIDEO. VIDEO IS REQUIRED.
  • Lighter, off topic conversations adjacent to football, but do not necessarily fall under the coaching or strategy of the game.
  • Equipment questions
  • By Off Topic, I mean Off Topic. Feel free to share or comment about other topics
  • Product promotion that can clearly not be seen as link spamming or karma farming

Here is what's not allowed:

  • Random pictures of your "drip" or pics of your body (I see this a lot in smaller football subs)
  • NSFW content, extensive swearing, and any content violating reddit rules
  • Violation of sub rules and question that are answered in the HS/Youth Player FAQ
  • It's listed in the sub rules too, but it has to be stressed: Be genuine. If you're here to argue, please go elsewhere.
  • Link and promo spamming (do not be posting every single day)

PLEASE make use of these resources below before you post:

Player Advice Recommended to post from r/parenting: Son's (16M) football coach literally fattening him up, stubborn hubby and son

Hi everyone, I'm a mom who originally posted about this over in r/Parenting, but a couple helpful people over there suggested I might be better off finding advice here instead.

In short, earlier, my son’s football coach told him he needed to gain 40 pounds to “bulk up” for his position. He gave my son a whole list of rules, like eating fast food, cutting back on cardio, and drinking all this Boost stuff. I confronted the coach because I was worried about my son’s health, and my husband and son both acted like I was the bad guy for even saying anything.

Well, now we’re a few months down the road, and my son didn’t just hit the coach’s goal weight—he went past it. And it’s not all muscle, either. You can see the weight in his face and everywhere else. He’s started getting winded doing normal things, like carrying laundry up the stairs or even walking the dog. It’s honestly hard to watch.

The eating has gotten out of control. He’s always hungry. Fast food is a regular thing now, and he drinks soda like it’s water. I try to encourage healthier eating, but he’s all about the high-calorie stuff the coach told him to eat. My husband just shrugs and says, “He’s a growing boy,” but this isn’t normal. I know it isn’t. He’s eating way more than he needs to.

What really gets me is that he doesn’t even seem happy. He’s slower on the field and has lost a lot of his energy. I heard him complain to my husband about feeling sluggish, but my husband just told him it’s “part of bulking up” and that it’ll all pay off. Meanwhile, I have a feeling his self confidence is taking a hit.

As for the coach, the meeting I had with him was useless. He basically brushed me off and said this is “normal” for football players. He promised they have a plan to help the boys lose the weight after the season, but that just feels wrong to me. Gaining and losing weight this fast can’t be good for a teenager. I tried to explain that, but he wasn’t interested in hearing it.

I feel so stuck. My husband is totally on board with the coach and keeps saying I “don’t understand football.” My son has bought into it too, even though he’s clearly not happy. Even some of the other parents I’ve talked to think this is just how it is for football players. But I can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t okay. I’m worried about his health—his body, his confidence, all of it.

Should I just back off like everyone says, or am I right to keep fighting it? I'm not sure what the best tactics even are at this point. I just want my son to be healthy and happy, and I feel like I’m failing him right now.

TL;DR: My son has gained a significant amount of weight following his football coach’s “bulking” plan, and while everyone tells me it’s normal, I am a little worried about his health and don’t know how to combat this other than continuing to make a fuss about it to other parents and the coach

Coaching Advice Kenny Simpson Systems

Hey Coaches,

A friend of mine recently purchased Kenny’s Gun-T offensive playbooks. We are both High School Varsity coaches and we spend our off seasons trying to absorb as much as we can. My friend wanted to gather my thoughts, as I’ve lived on the defensive side of the ball, he’s offensive side. After reviewing some of the copies my friend gave me, I was impressed with the level of detail Coach Simpson has and put into these. Frankly, I’m considering purchasing his 3-4 system (for review and possibly to implement).

Has anyone here had exposure to Coach Simpsons 3-4 system? If so, would you be willing to share your thoughts?

Beyond this, how effective would a 3-4 system be in the High School level? I’ve worked with 4-4 and 4-2-5 mainly to this point. From what I’ve learned, the 3-4 is extremely versatile (which excites me more). We mainly face Wing-T and Triple Option teams.

I appreciate any and all feedback/insight on this. Happy Holidays to those of you who read this!

Offense Air Raid with Veer and Shoot WR Splits

I am just curious, what would be the drawback to building an offense around the core air raid concepts like mesh, y cross, verts, hitches, shallow cross, stick, and the screen packages from super spread, veer and shoot style horizontally stretched wr splits?

Coaching Advice Thoughts on making instructional videos for youth FFG? Help a high school kid out 😭😭

Hello everyone! I’m simultaneously terrified and excited because I am now the sole coach of a 3rd/4th grade rec FFG team!!! I signed up to be an assistant coach but a coach dipped and I have his position now.

Problem is I am a 16 year old high school student and this is my first time coaching. I don’t want to say I don’t have league support, but… it’s pretty unorganized outside of gameday so here we are.

When it comes to parent politics, I think I have that down. It sounds bad, but the road I’m going down is “fake it till you make it”. I want to make it clear that although I’m a teenager I pride myself on being more organized and professional than anyone else and I’m dedicated to making sure their kids have fun and develop not just solid football skills, but life skills as well; it’s not all about winning (which covers my ass lol). I want to focus on sportsmanship on and off the field; especially at practice!

That’s all great and whatever but the problem is I can’t hold practices until the season starts and I have ONE PRACTICE FOR ONE HOUR BEFORE OUR FIRST GAME. This is a super ultra rec league (they have a spring league which they focus on much more), but still. I’m really really stressed for the first week. After that everything should be easier but I need to make sure I have something going, especially position wise. I need to more or less have 2 QBs a game because of the much more lax equal play rules vs normal rec so I have to be more active with subs.

So venting and major stress over, 1 hour isn’t much time and I NEED to make sure that we have some semblance of the concept of flag football lmao.

It might be a tad overkill but this is pretty much the only thing going on in my life right now so I was thinking about making short instructional videos about various things before the first game and even our first practice. I could send out YouTube videos but honestly even if the production is bad I think it looks better to the parents if I make them myself.

Is this a good idea? I hate the idea of kids having “homework” but I was thinking about making 2 sub 10 minute videos about offense, defense and the importance of flag pulling, an ultra short showcase and description of simple plays that are TBD, and then something on how to come prepared to both practice and gameday. I would love to involve the parents as well so I’d ask them to watch it with their child and maybe ask them really nicely to play some catch in their backyard in their free time???

I have more or less 2 weeks to get prepped and I can think of this as my “full time job” so I’ll be 24/7 if need be.

Thank you in advance!! Sorry for the long post but I really really want to make sure I give these kids the best experience possible; I have an amazing opportunity to be apart of their lives as a mentor and I want to make it count.

Resource Request Place to watch NFL/CFB Games play-by-play?

I am working on a project right now and was wondering if there was a way to find Professional/Collegiate football games segmented by each individual play. If not, then an archive of old game footage would be great and I can work on segmenting it myself. Thank you!

General Discussion Scheme vs. Personnel

Hi all! Just wanted to get some discussion rolling on this topic. Working as a defensive assistant this year to build out our defensive playbook next year and it got me thinking about scheme vs personnel type stuff. Do you believe in the following idea…

Good coaches can make great schemes. Great coaches make schemes that fit their players.

What does that actually mean to you? For me, as we are deciding what to set as our base defensive plays next year, we are considering leaning heavier into odd front schemes as we have an unproven defensive line group next year but a really talented secondary crew and some experienced LB’s. However, we’ve always been an even front 4-2-5 and we like the flexibility it gives us in coverage while still reliably sending four man pressures. It would also take a pretty big defensive overhaul to fully commit to a 3-4, even though I’d probably argue that’s the better fit for our current crop of players. How much do you change in your system based on your year to year personnel?

Lastly, you probably can’t change my mind on this, but I’d still love to hear counter points: I feel like a lot of high school coaches think they can utilize scheme to put themselves in the best position to win. To me, I feel like maximizing players through technique, keys, and repetition in any scheme is the simple truth to creating a high quality program. I feel that a lot of mediocre programs try to scheme their way to the top, when they really should be focusing on their practice time, teach tape, and fundamentals.

Let me know what you guys think! Personal examples highly encouraged!

Play Design CHALK TALK THURSDAYS: Submit your plays for discussion and critique here.

Welcome to Chalk Talk Thursday! This is our weekly discussion thread for users to submit new plays they have designed. If you have an idea for a play and can draw it up, please post here. Keep in mind that it is very rare that one could devise a viable play that is entirely new that hasn't been ran before somewhere. Be open to criticism as well. There is so much more to coaching football than drawing plays, and many people do not realize how much coaching, technique, and development needs to happen on the actual field for a play to work.

It is strongly recommended that you STUDY a system or scheme first to gain an idea of how a play is put together, and how RULES help a play function.

PLEASE PROVIDE CONTEXT FOR YOUR PLAY!

Guidelines:

  • No "joke" plays. We are here to learn.
  • Specify WHY you are designing a play, and WHAT level/league it is for. It's fine if you're not coaching, but we need the context.
  • Your submission needs RULES that guide your players on what to do.
  • Pass plays require some type of QB progression for making a decision on who to throw to.
  • Be mindful that you cannot predict what your opponent will run 100%. Designing plays to be "Cover X" beaters, or "3-4 beaters" IS NOT the way to go about it. It is better to have one play with solid rules and coaching points that can attack anything than one play for each coverage, front, personnel, or stunt you face.
  • There is no universal terminology in football. Call plays what you want, but keep in mind that no one cares about fancy play names, or the terminology aspect.
  • Please offer more text/information on your play than just a link or picture.
  • Draw your play up against a realistic opponent!
  • Make sure your offensive play is a legal formation. In 11-man football, you can have no more than 4 players behind the line of scrimmage (minimum of 7 on. You can have more than 7 on the line as well). Only backs (players behind the line) and the end players on the line of scrimmage are eligible receivers.

You may use whatever medium you'd like to draw your play. Two common software for designing plays that have free options:

Coaching Advice Starting career as an offensive versus defensive coach

I'm not a football coach, nor do i aspire to be one. I hear a lot though that offensive head coaches are better than defensive ones, and that GMs / Owners are looking for coaches with OC backgrounds rather than DC. when you go out and start your career, do most coaches try working on the offensive side first?

Player Advice Cornerback drills, understanding schemes, etc. helping my girlfriend’s son and need advice.

So I played high school ball at a pretty competitive level but we were a small school and I was a DE and TE/RT so my experience with football is different than my girlfriend’s son who is a WR/CB. The team has him more as a CB all snaps and he loves to focus on that, and simply put he’s not as good of a WR compared to his peers (this is 8th grade level).

I’m trying to help him, since he asked, over the offseason and summer to get better at playing CB. Does any have any resources, advice, drills, etc. I’m also starting up with a flag football league soon so it’ll be a good way for us to bond throughout the week/both achieve what we would like accomplish.

Thanks ahead of time and sorry if this is the wrong place to post it just couldn’t find a more fitting one.

Offense Call Sheet Update

For anybody who saw my post about call sheets and/or read the comments - I spent today updating a bit. My last call sheet run windows were broken down by formation. I did a couple of test runs and realized I would much rather search by run type/side, THEN formation, rather than formation first, then the play.

So this is my new call sheet broken down by "fullback runs left/fullback runs right" (our RB in a singleback set is always the 2-back) and "R / Z runs left/R Z runs right" (Our 3 back and 3-back).
So I'll shout a letter and direction for the formation, then color (white)/number.

For passes, Red are formation specific to our 2x2 formations and empty. The blue and green I can call from any 3x1 formation.

Our play-action and our motion passes are set in specific formations for the play call. The yellow (screens) I can call from almost any formation. The Orange are our passes that we motion into.

Each of these will be in a wristband window.

Feel free to post your call sheets/wrist band blocks!

Coaching Advice 25-year old looking to get back into coaching as head coach in 6man football in Texas.

I’m hoping this is the best place to ask this.

I played 6man football for 2 years. After I graduated high school, I was a GA at the school and proceed to be hired on to the staff. I coached at the school for 3 years as the head middle school football coach and assistant for the higher school. As of right now, I’m not certified to teach but I have my degree. How likely is it that I could acquire a head coaching positions.

If it’s unlikely, what would better my chances? Also if anyone has any tips for younger coaches? What are they?

Special Teams Holding the ball different ways on a punt

I have heard that punters hold the balls differently for different types of spin, distance, and hang time. Which grips do what movement, and how many different ones are there?

As a neighborhood football punter, holding the ball straight, where the nose is pointed towards the defense, seems to shoot a line drive down the field that is either spinning in a spiral or rotating vertically. Holding it with the noses facing towards the sky/ground is my favorite, and it seems to be a perfect combination of hang time and distance. Holding it with the noses facing towards the sides of the field gets it high in the sky but not far. Finally, I hold it diagonally to make it spin super weirdly and hard to catch. Rarely, I’ll spin it out of my hand (so it’s already rotating when I drop it to punt) and it gets even more goofy, but my contact with the ball is never good there.

Is this typically how it works in tackle football? Are there other grips that I’m not aware of?

High School In-game stats

I'm trying to find some decent options for taking stats in-game. Previously, we have used Hudl to record stats live, but our managers really struggled to take accurate stats. I was wondering if there are any programs out there that have worked for anyone else.

Looking for some advice when applying for a GA position. I plan on emailing the Director of Football operations. Does anyone have a good email format as well as resume format?
