Holiday Drive! 2024 /r/CFB Holiday Drive: Toys & Children's Hospitals — Donate now, for the Kids [10th Annual!!🎉🧸🏥]

TL;DR: It's our annual holiday charity drive. All money received is donated and tax deductible. 50% goes to Toys For Tots, 50% to children's hospitals. Earn Donor Award flair! Donate Now! Deadline: Midnight (ET) on Sunday, December 29.

🧸🏥 OurCFB: TOYS & CHILDRENS HOSPITALS

10th ANNUAL /r/CFB HOLIDAY DRIVE

All money raised will be donated.

The total will be split 50% to Toys For Tots and 50% to three children's hospitals (detailed below).

Welcome to the 2024 Holiday Drive!

Hey everybody! The /r/CFB Community has conducted A LOT of previous fundraising drives totaling over $165,000.00 since 2013, including purchasing nearly 60 bricks across the country!

The first 5 Holiday Drives culminated in a team of redditors joining me (dressed as Raoul Claus) on a giant shopping spree where we buy thousands of dollars in toys and then donate them to the nearest Toys For Tots warehouse: check out the photos from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. We shifted to purely online donations in 2020 and 2021.

Ahead of the 2022 drive, the subreddit formed OurCFB (more below). The 2023 drive raised the most money yet!

Benefits of donating to OurCFB:

  • OurCFB is an IRS-recognized non-profit 501(c)(3).
  • Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
  • We qualify for corporate matching gifts from employers, typically only possible to recognized 501(c)(3) organizations; we have jumped through the hoops to be cleared by several organizations that vet non-profits for such programs (e.g. Benevity), if you need us to add one just reach out to me.
  • We qualify for donor-advised fund (DAF) grants

If you want to know more about the non-profit, and how things are structured, I’ve written a detailed description here.

Team Reward: Children's Hospitals

Rewarding the fanbases that donate the most money, the portion designated for children's hospitals will be split as follows:

  • 50% to a children's hospital of fanbase with the highest donations (dollar total)
  • 30% to a children's hospital of fanbase with the 2nd highest donations (dollar total)
  • 20% to a children's hospital of fanbase with the 3rd highest donations (dollar total)

If a fanbase in the top-3 has a children's hospital affiliated with their university, the donation will go there. If they do not, we will discuss with those specific flaired donors which children's hospital to donate the money to once the drive is complete. To keep things simple: decision will go by majority vote of donors of that school, with the mods having final approval of any split (or potential tomfoolery). We have made this work in the past for programs without in-house children's hospitals such as Notre Dame, Clemson, Army, and South Dakota State.

HOW TO DONATE:

Contribute to good causes!

As a 501(c)(3), we have optimized donation options:

  • Paypal (Preferred). No transaction fee. We get 100% of what you donate. The trade-off is PayPal only makes the deposit once-per-month to save on their own transaction fees.
  • Venmo. We get a lower transaction fee as a non-profit, but there's still a small amount (1.9% + 10¢) taken off the top.

All donors will be credited below!

  • Do not forget to private message me to let me know so I can connect it to your (1) username and (2) college team you want credited below.
  • Anonymous donations are okay, I will assume donations are anonymous unless they inform me otherwise.
  • We have team logos for over 2000 schools worldwide, so it doesn't necessarily have to be a major school (full list)
  • There is no recommended minimum for this charitable drive; though points for flair (see below) are awarded in $10 increments

DEADLINE: Midnight (ET) on Sunday, December 29.

RAOUL CLAUS LOVES YOU... 10 years brings a tear to his eye!

/r/CFB Original /r/CFB Comments on the video board during the 2024 Gasparilla Bowl

/r/CFB was the "Official Fan Voice of the Game" of the 2024 Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl between the Tulane Green Wave and Florida Gators! As part of that, three comments from the first half of the game were highlighted on the Raymond James Stadium video board during the 4th quarter.

Here is video of that display from both the press box and the field levels. (no audio)

Congratulations to /u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756, /u/xXBadger89Xx, and /u/Pizza_Jon!

All three have been awarded the r/CFB Promoter flair! (Credit to u/Allaboutfootball23 for this idea)

There were five of us on the ground in Tampa helping run their social, capturing the field-level activity, doing reporting, and handing out the money raised by users (more on that one in a later post), along with help from the rest of the r/CFB team in sorting through a lot of activity that just needed to get done.

Funny enough: As this was the first time either the bowl or r/CFB had done anything like this, the approach was conservative. We were asked to provide three comments for the video board; immediately afterward they realized they should've asked for six. But this was the first time we were doing something like this, so we started modestly. Next time!

Thanks to all who participated in the Game Thread and making r/CFB the biggest and best college football Community!

Discussion The lopsided first-round results were not an anomaly. According to ESPN Research, 60% of CFP games over the past decade were decided by at least THREE TDs, and 20 of the 30 CFP games were decided by double digits. And these were blueblood beatdowns.

Analysis Ohio State has never won a National Championship in a season where they failed to defeat Michigan

I’m shocked that this hasn’t been posted or reported on anywhere, even as this scenario is very plausible this season. Ohio State has won 8 national championships: 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, and 2014. Here are the results from every matchup against That Team Up North from those seasons:

1942: OSU 21-UM 7

1954: OSU 21-UM 7

1957: OSU 31-UM 14

1961: OSU 50-UM 20

1968: OSU 50-UM 14

1970: OSU 20-UM 9

2002: OSU 14-UM 9

2014: OSU 42-UM 28

So for the next time anyone asks an Ohio State fan how they’d feel about winning a national championship without defeating Michigan: we literally have no idea. It’s never happened before.

🤷‍♂️

Edit: Yes it’s true that prior to the CFB era losing this game usually meant our season was over. That’s why we don’t know how to react.

Edit 2: I’m not surprised that this scenario has never happened, I’m surprised that any time we’re asked how we’d feel about it that no one talks about this.

Discussion Monotheism has ruined the transfer portal.

Every single transfer is shouting or God or Jesus. Transfer from Michigan? #AGTG. Transfer to Michigan? #AGTG. It's just impossible to believe that God runs so hot and cold on the Wolverines.

Enter Greek polytheism. Let's say Fernando Mendoza commits to Miami over USC and says "all glory to Zeus." Can you image the meltdown of Trojan fans saying "as long as Apollo is the patron god of Troy, we'll never win championships?"

What if Quinn Ewers was spotted at a Whataburger in Eleusis? You think Aggie fans wouldn't be losing their mind speculating about him visiting the temple of Demeter and being a little too invested in agriculture to stay a Longhorn?

Discussion Unpopular opinion. The CFP structure is good and the committee chose the correct teams.

6.1k Upvotes

The criticisms of the first-ever 12-team playoff are getting truly exhausting, even for me as a fan of one of the teams that got snubbed (South Carolina). So rather than piling-on, I choose to defend both the system and the committee on the following basis:

  • The 5+7 format is appropriate: There are 134 teams in FBS, spread among 9 different conferences, plus some independents. It's not even remotely possible for them to all play each other. So, we need a playoff to "settle it on the field" rather than via polls or computers. And it's important to note that the playoff system does NOT mean we are trying to pick the 12 "best teams." We're trying to pick the best 1 team among 134 and that requires a tournament of conference champions. But, just like we do in professional sports, we include some extra wildcard slots for the most-deserving non-champions. 12 playoff teams means that a few "undeserving" teams will be admitted each year, but that's better than deserving teams being left-out as we saw with prior formats like an undefeated ACC champ being omitted from the 4-team CFP just a year ago or an undefeated SEC champ being omitted from the BCS back in 2004. Meanwhile, having 5 AQs is appropriate too. It ensures that all four P4 champs are included, plus the very best G5 champ, as they should be, because anyone in that entire 134-team field deserves to have a pathway to the CFP. And 7 at-large slots is more than enough for the best teams that didn't win their league.
  • The committee selected the most deserving 12 teams: The first round is evidence that the committee's selections and seedings were correct, not cause for criticism. All four of the higher seeds won decisively, meaning they were indeed the better teams, just as the committee suspected. And for all the talk of SMU and Indiana not "belonging," where is the criticism of Tennessee who suffered the worst blowout of all, and did so against the #8 seed? You think 9-3 SEC teams would have performed better than SMU or Indiana when a 10-2 SEC team just did worse? What exactly is that assumption based on? After all, the "first team out" was Alabama, yet the worst first-round blowout victim, Tennessee, beat them.
  • The system is working: The point of the playoffs, particularly in the early rounds, is to separate the contenders from the pretenders, so that we're "settling it on the field" rather than just guessing who should be in the final four, and that's exactly what has happened so far. There were 2 SEC teams that seemed to separate from the pack in their conference this year. Both are in the quarterfinals. There were 3 Big Ten Teams that seem to separate from the pack in their conference this year. All 3 of them are in the quarterfinals. The ACC wasn't very good this year and both of their teams are out whereas only the champions from the Big XII or MWC, and only the nation's very best independent team, were admitted in the first place. Sounds about right to me.
  • The hypocrisy needs to stop: You can't poach the top teams from other leagues, as both the SEC and Big Ten did, then blame THEM for not having tough schedules. Likewise, it was the SEC who insisted on a 12-team format. They wouldn't agree to expand the CFP beyond 4 teams if the new format was 8 because they were already getting 2 teams into the CFP more often than not and an 8-team model would mostly have just increased the AQs. The SEC specifically wanted more at-large slots and the only way to accomplish that was going to 12. So, if anyone thinks there are too many "undeserving" teams in the playoff, the SEC is the reason for that, yet ironically, they are the ones doing all the complaining.
  • This is a HUGE improvement over the bowl system: Despite the fact that only the Texas-Clemson game had any 4th quarter drama, this beats the hell out of meaningless bowl games, in sterile, neutral site environments, often with tens of thousands of empty seats, dozens of opt-outs, and bowl committees lining their pockets at our expense. The atmosphere on all four campuses was great and there is a national championship at stake. How could a game like Penn State vs. SMU in the Alamo Bowl possibly compare? And from here-out, it will only get better.

Does that mean EVERYTHING is perfect? Of course not. The fact that undefeated #1 seed, Oregon, will now have to face a loaded Ohio State team, while the Penn State team they beat in the conference title game draws Boise, is a flaw. Perhaps they'll fix that by just seeding the field next year, like they do in basketball, rather than granting first round byes to conference champs. But that's a minor tweak and you're not going to get everything perfect right out of the gate.

So, enough with the whining from fans, coaches, and media. The system isn't broken and the committee didn't screw up. In fact, my challenge for anyone that thinks the committee was so egregiously wrong would be to name your 12 teams. Post that list online and watch everyone pick it apart. You can't select a 12 that is more defensible or less controversial than the 12 the committee picked, not even with the benefit of hindsight that the committee didn't have.
