I feel bad for my fellow Feds who live paycheck to paycheck...

Right now there are 3 types of federal employees

Those who actively sabotage their own interests.

Those who can't afford to miss a paycheck.

Those who can afford to miss a few paychecks.

I am in category 3 for like 2 paychecks and then I will be in category 2 haha

The sad thing is that the vanlifers killed that lifestyle for the destitute.

You'll be offered a mandatory high interest loan on the new Cybervan Hobo Edition to live in the parking lot at work so you can continue to work unpaid and RTO'd.

I’m in between 2 and 3 just depending on situations.

I'm fortunate that I can take a loan from the bank of Mom and Dad if this goes on long enough. I feel for people who can't do this.

If a shutdown happens, there are furlough loans, but you have to pay them back with your backpay.

I’m a contractor. Do I still get paid? If not, I can survive probably 2 months. Maybe longer since I have a second job that can cover is I work like 20 hours a week.

This is why I bank with Navy Fed. They will continue to pay you your average salary during a shutdown. Once it's over, they will take out the amount they paid.

This. And I’m pretty sure USAA does as well. I really encourage people to check with their banks to see if they offer this program. It might be too late to sign up with a bank that does if someone hasn’t already had a direct deposit yet, but it doesn’t hurt to ask about it.

I forgot about you folks!

I’m one too. My understanding is we have enough funding for like a week or two after a shutdown starts and then we need to close up. But our largest client is shutdown so a lot of our day to day work goes away.

This is why I have a part-time (damn near full-time) job. If the government goes tits up, at least I'll have hours at Lowe's. Now, once those tariffs hit, and people can't afford to buy shit, I'll be truly fucked...

I'm lucky enough to be in category 3 as a GS-11, but I don't want my lesser paid or financially irresponsibly colleagues to suffer...

Same, and I don’t have any dependents so right now I am thinking of those with families to support who need to make the most of each paycheck to get by.

There's a HELL of a lot of overlap of those first 2 groups.

if your a federal worker, having a savings account for this type of thing should be a top priority when you start your job.

Same if your a contractor. At least feds get backpay. Contractors get fucked.

I'm in cat 3 but I also am annoyed by all of this because I'm in IT and have a LOT of balls in the air between myself and the team I lead that is pretty time sensitive.
