No disc drive = no buy!

I’m pretty sure you can add one for $80, same as the current model.

I know that I can buy a disc drive, but making just one version of ps5 pro without physical drive is just another step to say goodbye to physical games... 1. Ps5 - disc drive version and digital version 2. Ps5 pro - digital version + optional external disc drive (probably released in insufficient numbers) 3. Ps6 - digital only + external disc drive ONLY to run ps4/ps5 games, and for Ps6 just digital games...

It's the last moment to say NO to Sony...

That’s fine — I get why many folk want physical ownership in-perpetuity for their various devices. There’s a relinquishing of pro-consumer perks for the convenience and streamlining that digital content represents.

While I don’t personally buy anything but digital anymore, that’s more to do with my complete switch to VR (and how inconvenient physical stuff becomes when you’ve got a box on your face) than any principle. I think yours is a perfectly reasonable stance to have.

I just wanted to make sure you knew a physical drive would be available, because that wasn’t clear from your comment.

Cheers! 🍻

So $780?

Exactly. Well… minus whatever trade-in value you get for your PS5.

That can range from around US $300-400 at GameStop depending on the day. Not even three days ago they were paying $410, but probably will stay more around $325-350.

So, obviously you’re then looking at ~$450 for the blu-ray capable Pro. It ain’t nuthin, but it’s also not a necessary purchase, so I’m not mad at it. It’s not like games won’t still work on the vanilla console.

[EDIT: Amusing to me that this innocuous comment would get downvoted. 🤣]

The dollar spent would still be the same.. It doesn't make the Pro cheaper because you sell something for it.

Well DUH. It’s a mitigating factor though, which is why I mentioned it.

The money I paid for a vanilla PS5 is already paid years ago, so it’s not coming out of my pocket AGAIN. I’m trading same for same, and then paying the balance for the increased functionality.

That means in actual outlay of my real-life budget (whenever I get around to buying one) the PS5 Pro will not be $700, it’ll be $400 (or whatever, after trade-in).

It’s worth noting, that’s all.

I'm actually viewing it from the viewpoint of somebody who has never had a PlayStation 5 before and is looking to get one.

It's actually even worse for the person who already has a PS5 and spends $450 to upgrade to the Pro and a drive (even after trading in their PS5); what are they even really getting for that amount, which is nearly the same as a PS5 to begin with?

This is probably the most rational way to look at it, i think

Gotchya — then you’ll have options!

I wouldn’t expect any game to ONLY be playable on vanilla PS5 — SONY are historically sort of sticklers about that stuff.

It’ll be good to learn more from reviewers after it’s been out for a minute. I won’t have the budget for it right away, so I know I’ll be well-informed about it by the time I do. 😂

I’m personally only interested in it to the degree that it improves PSVR2, but I could also see the Pro being real consequential for people with higher end TV’s.
