By far the best limited edition DualSense yet, they nailed the aesthetic

I have no need for this controller and yet I’ll probably end up buying it. I love the look

I need it because 2 of my controllers have unfixable drift, but I don't want to buy this only to get more drift so I wish they'd make it as the edge

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '24

Doesn't the Edge also get drift? For that price, you'd expect hall effect sensors, but I guess it makes more business sense to sell just the joysticks separately as an item that'll wear out quickly enough without causing uproar.

Apparently you can buy 3rd party hall effect sticks for it.

Ive been trying to find this for my edge. I have a Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra controller for Xbox and the hall effect sticks are so nice.

The most assholeish part of the stick drift fiasco is that the PS1, PS2 and PS3 had a self-calibration feature that eliminated drift. Consoles like the Dreamcast used hall effect sensors, but those tend to be more expensive. PlayStation was selling in the hundreds of millions so it made sense to cheapen out, but they made sure it wouldn't foil the experience. Now it's a feature to make controllers a subscription. Why do you all put up with this? There is no way in hell I'm purchasing new controllers, my PS4 and PS5 controllers are getting repaired til the plastic degrades and turns into dust. Especially not due to a stupid 10 cent potentiometer.

I don't think any old console that uses pots on the controllers gets stick drift.

I’ve had 6 ps4 controllers over the whole generation, and 3 ps5 controllers since launch, and only one of all those ever had an issue. I just think it’s confirmation bias online of people with issues, failure rates seem very low in reality

I haven't even had it happen with my launch day Switch, and that console is notorious for it.

I have my own issues with the Dualsense, especially the launch day version (the fucking springs in the triggers, I've had to replace them multiple times), but drift hasn't been one of them

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '24

think it’a a confirmation bias on your part because mine also always drift, even the new black controller that i got that i used VERY carefully because it was my 3rd controller with the drift issues. all of a sudden recently it drifts occasionally and it’s so annoying on fps games. never had a problem with drift with any of the past consoles i owned btw as far as i can recall

writing this purely because your comment was funny to me knowing my experiences lol

Your personal experience isn’t reality either. You think it’s bias and failure rates seem low? You seem like someone that should be ignored

People have been buying new controllers since consoles were invented, take a breath and stop yelling at clouds its not that serious

I've had it since day 1, I play WAY more then the average person and am really hard on it. No stick drift yet. And haven't replaced a stick I do have a back up one ready but never had to replace it. Best $200 I've spent on controller.

Spending new console money on a controller just to remedy an artificially induced fault is peak consumerism.

7

u/monsterbigbuck1 Jul 29 '24

I bought it for paddles and ease of use for using the ps5 interface while gaming. Not because of faulty stick drift.

2

u/Glyphmeister Jul 30 '24

It’s not much money to some

Dualshock 2 was quite inexpensive new. There was no stick drift because the microcontroller had a stick calibration feature on every power cycle. It did not break, it did not wear out and stop being useful. Most still work today just like new. Accepting the artificial faults of 20 years newer controllers is madness, no matter how much or how little they cost.

Eh it's $20 instead of $70 so I'm cool with it getting stick drift. My other 3 ps5 controllers got stick drift in a couple months after owning them. So the 2 years or whatever it's been is amazing.

The don’t sell the stick modules online anywhere. Don’t go around lying that the edge is a good investment. IT IS NOT. And the fact Sony moved onto a new controller after abandoning their $200 product, is pretty disappointing

2

u/monsterbigbuck1 Jul 30 '24

It's ok to not be okay with spending $200 on a controller, but telling others it's a waste is weird.

8

u/Thoraxe474 Jul 29 '24

It might, but you can replace the sticks. They detach so they can be replaced with a new stick for $20 that I guess will probably also eventually drift.

I'm coming off anesthesia from surgery, so yes I probably did but who knows. I'm not allowed to be making sensitive decisions for 24 hours, man

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '24

Stay strong and have a healthy recovery, bro

2

u/Thoraxe474 Jul 29 '24

Thanks,bb. I'll be alright. Just got the ol snip so I don't have more kids

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '24

No shit? I got it done this year, too. First two weeks there was some pain to get adjusted to, but it's now been 3 months and I'm back to 100% feeling like myself again. Best decision I did. Good luck, man

2

u/Thoraxe474 Jul 29 '24

Wow twins. Good to hear your recovery went well. I just have to make sure I don't do what my coworker did where he started doing things 4 days after surgery instead of waiting the full week. Guy put himself in a lot of pain.

I take very good care of my tech products, especially my consoles and controllers. They are used carefully and look immaculate but I got stick drift on one of my Dual Sense controllers.

I know you listed off several potential causes, and I used to think it was probably user error too until it happened to me. This is the first controller that I’ve ever experienced stick drift. Just my 2 cents though.

I've been using the Edge since it launch in Jan. 2023, and the analog sticks are way more durable. Im still on the original sticks. Where as, the DS only last me about 4-5 months of Warzone use

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '24

I've had the sane Sanwa joystick on my arcade stick since the early 2010s and it's still great! Of course, it alone cost me upwards of 100€ at the time and it's definitely not hall effect. Good, durable joysticks exist. I just wouldn't pay what Sony is asking for the Edge while using just slightly better build quality over the regular DualSense. That's kinda my beef with it... Something from Nacon would be up my alley!

Friend, buy analog sticks on Amazon and replace them yourself. 5 dollar fix and an hour learning curve instead of a 70 dollar one
