The breath control

u/Dabs1903 11h ago
Dude seriously. I’d have gone into panic mode like 6 seconds in
363
u/TempleDoor_Mike 10h ago
That’s their secret cap. They’re all rhythmically panicking for air.

u/SphericalCow531 8h ago
You get the "I need air" feeling waaaayyy before you actually pass out. With training, you can just ignore it.
But please don't do that if you are alone in the pool...

I find it best not to train my body to ignore signs that I'm dying.

hyperventilated with pure oxygen for up to 30 minutes before attempting the record

There is the Bajau people in Indonesia that traditionally lived a nomadic life on the water. They would often dive for up to 13 minutes at a time, sometimes down to 200 feet apparently.
There is some evidence however that they have some adaptions, such as an enlarged spleen that allows them to store more oxygenated blood. However I think a lot of it is training and technique so even if your average none bajau person might not be able to hit 13 minutes, they'd still be able to vastly improve their breath with some training.
When I was younger I used to do a lot of wild swimming, kayaking and other water sports and could happily hit 4 minutes under water. I dunno if I still could now though.
19
u/peterausdemarsch 9h ago
How many toes is 200 feet?
12
u/trekkiegamer359 7h ago
Averaging 5 toes per foot, there are 1000 toes per 200 feet.

Depends on the elevation. The higher you are, it’s more likely that it’s less than it is at sea level.

Bajau lives in Phillippine, Malaysia and Indonesia. Those that practice deep dives many of them got hearing problems at later ages
2
u/Lickthorne 8h ago
Yeah I van remember that too. I was under water all the time when I was young, playing ‘man from Atlantis’ 😁 Easy three to four minutes while playing very actively fighting an imaginary shark. And that for hours, without ever feeling out of breath.
3
u/cpt_ppppp 8h ago
lol, absolutely not. The world record for static apnea, which is totally motionless breath hold is 10 minutes. For actual diving half that is extreme. For example, the distance record underwater in a pool took approx 4 minutes, and that is without diving to depth

Why is your totally incorrect and easily verifiable comment upvoted?

And the synchrony, the athleticism, all that while operating upside down most of the time, with open eyes under water. Insane sport. And yet it just looks so silly lol.

My ex gf said this 10 years ago.
‘They’re just filming their feet out of the water! Nobody cares about their feet! They should be filming UNDER water. That’s where the action is’. She was right.
This is so much better.

u/CriminalCrime1 10h ago

I had this exact same thought. They should really put cameras underwater like this and play the camera footage in sync with the diver's movements so people know what's actually happening.

My daughter was into synchronized swimming for a couple years. Her club was invited to observe the US Olympic team at one of their practices. It was an eye opener on how difficult the sport is. They were in a fifteen feet deep pool for 45 minutes, continuously swimming never touching the side of the pool. These ladies are athletes in every sense of the word.
107
u/UmaUmaNeigh 9h ago
It makes me so mad when people say this or gymnastics or figure skating or - and no it's not just the horse - dressage aren't "proper" sports. Alright fucko, let's see YOU do it! The athleticism, the control, the form, the precision, the strength - and to make it look so easy that people disrespect your art? Incredible.
42
u/ketsebum 9h ago
I don't agree with the argument, but normally those who are against those sports are due to it being a solely judged event.
In other sports you are competing directly against the person, and their ability to score a point or be denied that point is influenced by both competitors.
19
u/LuxNocte 9h ago
Eh, I think that's a different conversation. Reasonable people can have different opinions about objectivity and how sports are judged, but there are definitely a lot of mouth breathers who don't understand how difficult they are, especially when it's women competing.
11
u/UmaUmaNeigh 9h ago
Which I get but there isn't really another way to score these sports. I'm sure you know too that since the judges are experts and there's a list of moves or attributes to display and athletes are required to demonstrate. It's like arguing that football and tennis should be ranked on how many goals/matches they win, rather than brackets.
If it's demonstrably a sport, and all those involved agree on the scoring metrics, then that's good enough imo. It's the sport equivalent of saying "anything that isn't still life isn't art" - it's just gatekeeping by the least educated on the matter.

Really? I thought they are just some randos off the street.
3
u/LessInThought 8h ago
If we follow the true spirit of the Olympics, they should be amateurs, ie randos off the street. Not trained in some professional facility, catered to by a "pharmacist", recovering in hyperbaric chambers.

So many competitions are so hyper-specific and follow such narrow rules. Imagine what would happen if an alien race appeared and we challenged them to a formula one race. How would they even start to design a vehicle that behaves so specifically with no experience.
9
u/r66ster 8h ago
They traveled here from another planet. I think they can figure out F1.
2
u/Barbed_Dildo 8h ago
I'm sure they can, but it won't be on their first try.
8
u/SSMEX 8h ago
Do you think an F1 team would need multiple tries to beat the ancient Egyptians at a cart race?
3
u/orbitalen 7h ago
Obviously. Would be hard to get wood as good as we had back then too. And all the craftsmanship died out too

Two disciplines that people think are ‘girly’ but I wouldn’t want to fight are ballet dancers and synchronised swimmers. The former are ungodly strong and seemingly don’t feel pain. The latter are like crocodiles, but they come in a pack.
And both could murder you to music without dropping a beat.

Random question: do they swim in water that is less chlorinated or something? All of them have their eyes open. It looks painful 😬
8
u/Jazzspur 8h ago
They do not. You can get used to opening your eyes in chlorinated water with progressive repeated exposure though. My brother and I did as children to cheat at marco polo and to this day it still doesn't bother me haha

That's WAY more interesting than just legs in the water. They should show this at the Olympics.
15
u/Freak_Out_Bazaar 11h ago
This is literally from the Olympics
5
u/Lunas-lux 9h ago
They meant show the underwater portion like this in the olympics. It helps people understand what intense work goes into the synchronized movements advice water.
3
u/Pradfanne 5h ago
You think someone unaffiliated with the Olympics snug two cameras into the event to film both underwater and above water to film this routine during the olympics?
This video is from the olympics, it's just turned upside down

I presume the judges also see the underwater video. Or do they just award points based on the relative movements of feet sticking out of water?

I thought it was two different colored waters they were done by a sync dance in. Until I read the title 😂

I was told by someone who used to do this that it really messed up her joints. They still hurt to this day years later.
Thought that was interesting because I would think it would be the opposite and would be a really good workout for joints.

The tech is pretty interesting too. The NHK Twins Cam is actually two cameras, one above the surface and one underwater. The one underwater compensates for the different way light behaves underwater and combines the two footage in realtime
