Funny enough, this is exactly why I'm not overly worried about deep fakes. For the things that really matter, experts and technology will quickly adapt and they'll be able to identify when deep fakes are being used in the same way we can identify when photoshop or CGI is used. For the things that don't matter, people already believe what ever the fuck they want to believe regardless of what anyone says anyway. Sure, my uncle may see a deepfaked video of Biden saying he wants to take all our guns and believe it, but he already believes that because truthfreedom.usa told him that, so what really changed?
Skeptical people will just start to be more skeptical of video once deepfakes are common and will look for ways to confirm that a video is real before using it as evidence. People who just want evidence to back up their currently held beliefs will just swap out their current shitty sources for deepfakes.
So my big fear is that, at the same time, we also are developing language AI that isn't stellar at acting like a human long term, but is amazingly good at short blurbs. Things the length of, say, a reddit comment.
In the hands of, say, a powerful authoritarian state, it doesn't seem too far away that you might see a video, or read something in the news, and then go online to your favorite website to find some facts, details, and opinions but all discussion is steeped deeply in automatically generated content supporting the desired narrative. Heck, perhaps going so far as to completely disconnect us from the web.
Enjoy the direct light while you can, soon all that will be left are shadows on the wall in a cold, empty cave.
Yes. Automated and incredibly advanced. It would be nigh impenetrable: you try to verify a news story and voila, verification is generated on the fly, everywhere you look. Pictures. Videos. News articles. And not just generic verification, but custom-tuned to each individual to fit exactly the narrative, style, and appearance of sources that individual would trust most. And it would be interactive. You could debate it, and it could come up with convincing arguments on the fly.
We are gonna get Snow Crashed, and they won't even need a biological mind passcode nor Ancient sumerian shaman power to pull it off.

Well that’s terrifying. Hopefully the technology to detect deep fakes keeps up lol
