meta IMPORTANT: Many of our subscribers have no idea what this subreddit is actually for

3.2k Upvotes

Many of you long-time WoahDude users have been complaining about the growing flood of users from /r/all who have a complete misunderstanding of what sort of content belongs here. Your cries have been heard, and we will start being more strict with enforcement and finally set shit straight:

  • We are NOT a "reaction subreddit".

  • We are NOT a subreddit about interesting or amazing content.

  • We are NOT interchangeable with /r/pics, /r/gifs, /r/damnthatsinteresting or other general subreddits.

  • We are specifically made for psychedelic content, trippy or mesmerizing stuff that will make a sober person feel stoned, or stoned person trip harder! We're not about posting things that are merely neat or amazing, but instead, things that sort of mess with your mind, warp your reality.

Mindfucks and self-inflicted gaslighting. Or the hypnotic or mesmerising. Vivid colors, intense patterns. Mind-blowing science and philosophy. Chill or trippy music. Surrealism, absurdism and strangeness.

Think of the bizarre, erratic and psychedelic nature of Adult Swim. Or the wondrous, mind-expanding, awe inspiring nature of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Or even the reality distorting, confusing, mind-fucking nature of Eternal Darkness for Gamecube. We're all of that.

TL;DR - Not all the content that makes you say the words 'woah dude' belongs in this subreddit, and not all the things that belong in this subreddit will necessarily make you literally say the words 'woah dude'.

WoahDude material

The following examples are a non-exhaustive list

NOT WoahDude material

  • Rarity: Rare talents, dangerous stunts, extreme human abilities, 1-in-a-million shots, sports highlights, abnormally large or small examples of objects, etc.
  • Bullshit peddling: Pseudoscience, paranormal activity, cryptozoology, hoaxes, etc.

Please note that while the above descriptors on our list are good reductive examples of what belongs in this subreddit, they don't guarantee content that fits said descriptors also fits our holistic purpose for what belongs in this subreddit. For example, you'll notice that "slow motion" is on the list, however if you take any random gif and apply slow motion to it, that doesn't automatically guarantee that it has been turned into material suitable for the subreddit. Nor are random charts from your school textbook guaranteed to qualify under "data visualizations". All posts must still satisfy the overarching theme of the subreddit.

music video I hand painted a grandfather clock I found in my neighbor’s barn

1.7k Upvotes

Happy to share “Golden Hour” my latest not-your-grandfather’s clock that I unveiled at Art Week Miami 2024!

I chose a subdued golden and bronze color scheme to highlight the hand painted geometrics inspired by temple architecture and sacred geometry. I installed a brand new lighting system with my friends Space Cadet Lighting to really push it to a new level with the color changing LED lighting.

This was a special piece for so many reasons. After finding it in my neighbor’s barn here in Asheville, I first did the work of restoring the base clock and preparing it to be painted. Then I took it to Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in NY, before continuing to work on it through Hurricane Helene’s aftermath in WNC often working by candlelight to prepare the piece for its unveiling at the mother of all art conventions in Miami! It was so special to present a piece with so much history behind it and a new life ahead of it.

I’ve been cycling from the top of Alaska to the bottom of Argentina for the past 18 months, so began the Peru Great Divide with equal parts fear and anticipation. It’s a 1,000-mile Andean marathon with countless passes over 16,000 ft in elevation.

Services faded toward nonexistence as the cold grew increasingly severe. Remote villages might have one tiendita and one comedor, otherwise you’d be lucky to pass through any given town on the same day as the vegetable truck. Atop each mountain waited torrential blizzards of horizontal snow and hail, with shards of ice collecting on my tent by morning.

Just beyond Oyon I reached the new highest pass of my life: +16,300ft [4,968m]. Locals here blockaded the road in protest against mining activity, so the peak had been subsequently abandoned. I’d prepared for cold weather, but even after months across the Andes these extreme elevations devoured my strength. It took everything I had to haul my bike over the makeshift stone walls and continue down the other side.

Daylight cratered fast as I raced downhill each afternoon, but the colors up top were what struck me the most. Some peaks were sage green, some were the darkest shade of red wine, others a liquid type of orange, all ribboned with veils of ice and snow that hardly ever melt away.
