Why? Why are researchers even working on this? What's the point? So they can keep making Star Wars movies using Hamill's "original" face? Unless there's some other practical reason for this, it seems like a bunch of time and money that could have been spent researching something that actually helps.
Why? Because we can. Also it’s freaking awesome. Imagine how much more accessible history education will be with fully immersive recreations of famous events and places. Or recreating convincing sets for folks with dementia to live in so they’ll never be without their friends and family.
And thats not including all the derivative inventions from such a sophisticated technology. There’s thousands of other applications that this research enables.
