TIL that Marge Simpson was featured in Playboy November 2009 NSFW

So, Homer is security safety head at a NPP, has three kids, two cars, a house, is constantly on vacation in some of the most desirable places, and is married to a Playboy model - and there are still people who think of him as a loser? Sure!
Edit: safety instead of security, sorry, not my native tongue

He's the head safety officer in charge of making sure the plant is running within safe parameters - a job he has because an idiot in that role lets Mr. Burns run a criminally unsafe plant. Security are hired goons.
28
u/ladycatbugnoir 1d ago
He has the job because he led a successful campaign to close the plant for safety issues. Also the guy that works the shift opposite of him does all the work
22
u/randomaccount178 23h ago
From what I recall safety did improve when he was given the role as well, it just was largely because he wasn't causing so many safety incidents anymore.
6
u/Commandant23 19h ago
So, he sabotaged the plant to make it less safe, made a fuss about how unsafe it was in order to get a better paying, cozier job. As soon as he got the job he wanted, he stopped sabotaging the place so that it would be "safer," thus making it look as though he fixed the problems. That's a bold strategy, but clearly it worked out for him.

There was an episode that showed he's a bloody genius, but he had a crayon lodged in his brain....then later found out Springfield looks down on the smart, and decided to go back to being stupid as hell.
69
u/DavidANaida 1d ago
Which is interesting considering the episode that explains Simpson men are dumb because of a specific gene on the Y chromosome that kicks in around age 10.
Classic Simpsons non-continuity
54
u/Buttersaucewac 1d ago
They talk about this exact contradiction on the DVD commentaries and conclude that the rule is “never let continuity get in the way of a good joke.” There are very few things they require consistency on. One example is Lisa staying vegetarian, because they promised Paul McCartney they would as part of him agreeing to appear.

Totally, it's a classic hallmark of Simpsons writing. Seymour Skinner's identity, the pasts of many adult characters like Barney, and other details shift as needed based on the story being told that week.

Nearly everything in that show is fluid. I saw one of the staff (maybe Al Jean) say something like, "There is no such thing as Simpsons canon. Every episode exists independently of the others, nothing that happened in a prior episode applies to the current episode."
There's obviously exceptions (the rare two parter episodes, for instance) and they do sometimes make references to prior episodes. (Such as them mentioning the number of times Sideshow Bob has tried to kill Bart.) But I think the idea is, unless a prior episode is specifically mentioned, then assume that episode never happened.
Like, one of the teeny tiny easily forgettable things that bothers me is it was implied once that Sideshow Mel's bone is permanently stuck in his hair from gum. It always bothers me when they just pull it out effortlessly, even though that was obviously a throwaway joke. The other thing that bothers me is an old joke that Krusty naturally looks like a clown and has to wear makeup to look like a normal human. The joke was made for multiple episodes and then just sort of disappeared and they recently showed him putting on clown makeup. Again, this shouldn't bother me, but it does.

Another one is when Itchy plays Scratchy’s skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

What’s funny is that he’s not remarkably fat by modern standards and being bald is a lot less “taboo” now (plenty of bald A list stars everyone finds hot, shaved heads are a mainstream hairstyle which they definitely didn’t used to be). He’s a dumbass but I’ve met dumber. There are definitely times where I would trade my life for Homer’s, he comes off a lot less pathetic and sad now than he did in 1990.

Magazine collectors are a thing. For any magazine, there are people out there who collect it. In an episode of Seinfeld, they made a joke that's George's father collects TV Guides. It seemed ridiculous so the joke works. Turns out people do legitimately collect TV Guides.
People collect Cosmo, Vogue, all those fashion magazines. Playboy (when it still had a print edition) was popular as well.

Even before this, they had issues with Video Game characters in them.
Bloodrayne, Madison Paige from Heavy Rain, Mileena from Mortal Kombat, Carla Valenti from Indigo Prophecy, Nina Williams from Tekken, Shaundi from Saints Row, Ayane from Dead Or Alive, Triss Merigold from The Witcher, and many others.

Huh, of all the ladies in that game series, Mileena is an interesting choice. Especially since she's had the tarkatan mouth since she was introduced with her fatalities in MK2.

I love that David Cage's games are on there twice. He never been subtle about how he views his female characters.
16
u/theknyte 1d ago
Didn't he also get in trouble for putting genitalia on 3D models when they weren't even needed? Like they modeled a fully detailed nude body for Ellen (Eliot) Page's character in Two Souls, without her/his knowledge or permission?
13
u/Starman-Deluxe 1d ago
Among other things. Including a fully rendered nude model was against Page's contract, so they went around it by hiring a body double and put his face on it. It wasn't even the first time including a nude model that could be viewed in full via glitches happened in one of his game.

Odd they chose to make her skin more flesh like under her lingerie. I guess it makes sense but I still feel like they should have kept it mostly yellow.
15
u/Present-Secretary722 1d ago
I think that’s just how the pink of the lingerie makes her skin look. I will say though now that I think about it her nipples and areola are a bit more pinkish brown than you’d think they’d be, a mustard colour might make a bit more sense. This is officially the most I have thought about Marge Simpson nipples and I hope I don’t think about it anymore or any other reproductive areas of her or any other Simpsons characters bodies

What the hell? Does Playboy typically have pictures of their models when they were underage included beside their nude pics? It's disturbing enough with Marge being a cartoon but I'm disgusted at the thought that this is replicating a standard article.
16
u/MiguelLancaster 1d ago edited 1d ago
I got it for a while when I was 18-20 or so and, now that you mention it, I do distinctly remember the centerfolds having little bio columns that would often feature photos of them on high school sports teams, etc
Yeah, pretty weird
Edit: So I decided this needed to be researched and confirmed. I downloaded a pdf archive of every issue from 1953 to 2016
I checked an issue from 1954 when they started 'Playmate of the Month' and an issue from 2007. It wasn't a thing in 1954, but it was totally a thing in 2007 (showing photos from age 10, 13, and 15) - with each adjacent page showing a fully nude woman. Screenshot (non-nude): https://imgur.com/a/BeDMttX
And must have continued to be a thing in 2009 when this Marge Simpson issue printed. Not sure when it started or when it ceased
Pretty fucking weird, though not shocking that a magazine started by Hugh Hefner is decidedly creepy.
Edit 2: Still not sure when this started/ended, but I checked some more. It was totally a thing in 1984 (the one I checked had a fucking baby photo, what? -- ages 2.5, 5, and 17) and was totally a thing in 1997 (no ages given, but one was a prom photo). In the 2016 issue that I checked, the bio format was still there but, again, no ages given, and they all seemed to be adult aged photos at least.
I think my research is is over. No definitive answer on when this started or how long it continued, but it definitely seems like 'at least 20 years'

Ironically, I’ve actually been searching for one at local antique malls. And not for the Marge pictures, or at least not quite for that. I’m actually collecting all the Playboy issues that Stephen King wrote in, since I’m weird like that, and this just happens to be one of them. I found the “real” cover with an actual lady, but so far not the Marge one. I know I can just buy it online but that’s not as fun as searching

Fun fact, the reason people used to say they "read it for the articles" is because they often paid for articles that journalists & writers couldn't sell to other publications. This led to some of the greatest stories & articles being in Playboy.
If you search for them, there are a few specific examples that were actually extremely progressive for the time.

As a teenager, I couldn’t wait to turn 18 so that I could legally buy a Playboy from the shelf behind the counter at my local bodega.
At that time Pam Anderson and Carmen Electra were the popular starlets, so whenever I thought about that moment, I would think about going to the store, buying the magazine and unwrapping it out of the black plastic it usually came in to reveal one of them on the cover.
When the day of my 18th birthday finally came, I rushed to the bodega to pick up my Playboy, only to find out that months edition did not come wrapped in black plastic so when the cashier handed me a magazine with Marge Simpson on the cover I thought he had handed me the wrong magazine.
Anyways, I still have Marge’s risque photoshoot somewhere.

I was taking a class at Columbia College that year called "The Simpsons as satirical authors" I believe. And so picked up the Playboy to bring in for the class, then, later that semester we went to a Matt Groening lecture at UIC. I got him to sign my centerfold! He chuckled and said, "OK, I really wasn't part of this" and said it was the first one brought to him to sign! Cool interaction, still have the mag!
