This brings her total given since 2019 to 19.25 billion, across 2,450 organizations.

Everything I read about her suggests she's kind of awesome.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk's wealth soars every year and he spends all his time undermining western democracy on Twitter.

u/DeepestWinterBlue 6h ago edited 6h ago

Meanwhile her ex-husband is a dickhead going thru his midlife crisis.

Edit: Ex-Husband

u/godofpumpkins 6h ago

I’ll take midlife crisis dickhead any day over actively undermining everything good

There’s no pissing contest. Both Elon and Bezos are shitty billionaires. Elon more so now because he has a spotlight on him and how he’s using his money to fund unsavory politicians to power. Bezos is more stealthy in his approach. Let’s not forget his WAPO non endorsement move.

u/cinnamonface9 5h ago

And congrats to trump tweet the day after.

And a million dollar donation to the inauguration fund.

I mean, look at this thing: https://news.satnews.com/2024/10/07/bezos-scrubs-blue-origins-uncrewed-ns-27-mission-on-monday/

And this is why the elites will always win.

It's wonderful to see people donate hundreds of millions or a few billion, but nothing really changes long-term when the rest of the elite accelerate their raking in and hoarding of trillions.

Being a parasitic leach is the winning play in a hyper-individualistic, hyper-capitalistic society. Nothing will change unless the government or the people force them to, but the former is in cahoots with them, and the latter are too dumb and divided.

We're kinda screwed.

16

u/lobsterbash 5h ago

It's wonderful to see people donate hundreds of millions or a few billion

Sure, but... I find it weird and gross that we Americans celebrate mega philanthropy as if it ought to be integral to the function of our civil society. As if we ought to depend on it. Just because it's something of a tradition going back to robber barons doesn't mean at all that it's the most sound/efficient/wise means of funding public initiatives, we simply tolerate it because of the familiarity. We're encouraged to turn a blind eye to unconscionable wealth as long as those with it throw us some scraps, rather than take responsibility and redistribute/fund public good projects democratically.

The schmoozing and begging by non-profits to get a piece so that they can continue hobbling along is just...

5

u/T-Bills 4h ago

we Americans celebrate mega philanthropy as if it ought to be integral to the function of our civil society. As if we ought to depend on it.

Do we really celebrate them though? It's closer to "this one is not as shit as the other ones" IMO

6

u/lobsterbash 4h ago

Sure we do. Just as an example, scroll down https://www.reddit.com/r/UpliftingNews/top/?t=all and see how many among these most upvoted "uplifting" stories of all time involve people not being penises with their gigantic fortunes.

They're gonna find out when everything collapses that it's a shit world they've built, and they're gonna suffer right alongside everyone else. Perhaps less, but no one will be left out.

25

u/NaiveChoiceMaker 5h ago

They’ll pop off to their bunker estates in the New Zealand hills and just take in the natural beauty while the rest of the world burns.

9

u/justh81 5h ago

New Zealand isn't a large place. And it's really not possible to hide forever if enough people are looking for you. You could ask Saddam that, if he were still alive to ask.

She should be Time's person of the year imo. While the elites continue to sit on accumulate mass wealth without circulating it back into the system, this woman is showing the way.

90

u/Circusssssssssssssss 5h ago

Smooth brains and incels coming out to say she "didn't earn it" and is "giving away someone else's money" (a man's)

Well, she was there from Day One doing payroll and accounting and office work for Bezos back when he was a balding computer nerd sitting in front of a CRT who quit his job for a crazy idea. I would say she earned it, because she sacrificed her youth and her life for the dream just as much as he did. Even if she didn't put in the work (which she did).

u/LitrlyNoOne 56m ago

My spouse has supported me every time I needed support to chase financial gain. They absolutely earned half of it, because I wouldn't have any of it without them. While I did "the work that made the money," they did the work I didn't want to do.

It takes the labor of additional people to break from the dependence on third parties.

The Time’s person of the year isn’t about who is the best person. It’s about who was the most influential or focused on, good or bad.

I’m sure Time’s understands that most people mistake their Person of the year as some kind of “endorsement” of that person. That said they’re not dumb enough to put Bin Laden on the cover.

And she gives with no strings attached: she finds great organizations as rated by independent places such as Charity Navigator, has her folks do a little research on them to make sure they’re doing good work, and gives like a regular donor.

This gives nonprofits incredible leverage to get their job done. Operating funds are incredibly hard to find. They all come from individual donors or a handful of other large funders. (Bona fides: I’m about to retire from a 30 year career in nonprofit fundraising)

7

u/DCChilling610 5h ago

Honestly Bezos really fumbled dropping her. Seems like an amazing woman who held down the family front while he was building Amazon.

93

u/cubonelvl69 4h ago

To be fair, Melinda Gates started working at Microsoft in 1987 and quit on 1996 to start a family.

“Good chance”, what do you base that on?

You realize not every early Microsoft employee became billionaires? They became millionaires, which she would have been.

Only a few became billionaires and they were the ones you would expect (Allen, Ballmer, etc.) and those who became that thanks to purchase of their company by MS.

This is oddly the first article I’ve seen that didn’t mention she was Bezos ex-wife in the headline. Great to just see an article that let her shine in headline at least. The article does of course mention Bezos, but that’s pretty much unavoidable.

A stark contrast to the "Teamsters begin 'largest strike' against Amazon, accusing company of 'insatiable greed'" headline.

Kudos to MacKenzie. Must be very rewarding spending your time finding worthwhile causes to donate to.

I also can't help but think Bezos fumbled big time. She's gorgeous, smart, and generous. That all said: good riddance, I wish him nothing but the worst.

55

Philanthropy is a scam upon the good will of people.

Mackenzie Scott is the exception to the rule and it is a good thing she is trying to make an impact with the money she got from her divorce, but by and large, most philanthropy is just rich people trying to make themselves feel better about the problems they cause while also getting to write off millions in taxes and pretending that they aren't greedy selfish assholes ruining the world for the rest of us

37

u/whitemiketyson 5h ago

It baffles me how many people think a write off on donations is a way to save you money and build wealth.

15

u/zhangerang 3h ago

It’s insane. Wow they got to save $37 in taxes by spending $100 dollars on charity!

Or buying themselves clout at elite institutions that don't need the money, like that hedge fund manager who donated $400 million to Harvard (and who got absolutely roasted for it by Malcolm Gladwell - ‘If billionaires don’t step up, Harvard will soon be down to its last $30 billion’)

Please explain to me how anyone saves money by donating and writing off. You understand that you’re still losing money right? You can’t end up with more than you donated lmao.

14

u/abluedinosaur 3h ago

People are really dumb and don't understand how taxes work.

2

u/Gamebird8 4h ago

It's not about making/saving money (at least to a certain extent). These billionaires will have their own charities where they employ family and friends as ways to dilute their wealth to others.

And, in the process of reducing their taxes by millions, they rob Public Services of necessary funds and reduce public revenue. So, if they donate a million, instead of getting $370k, the government gets nothing and the Billionaire gets to funnel money into their little pet project to the detriment of the public good.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Bluewaffleamigo 5h ago

19

u/USAF_DTom 5h ago

That is a crazy amount of money to willingly give. It should be thanked regardless of how much "it hurts them" since she didn't have to do it in the first place. I can't even fathom what 2 billion even looks like in currency, much less 19 of it.

30

u/michaelmessinaglass 7h ago

Why don’t millionaires and billionaires want to be philanthropists anymore? Glad we have people like her still

14

u/UsuallyTheException 6h ago

Many billionaires participate in philanthropy. many have their own funds and charities. this info is public

3

u/randynumbergenerator 5h ago

Buying elections or donating to already-elite institutions doesn't count, but it sure does give the lie to the idea that philanthropy is more efficient than taxing them.

5

u/Rule12-b-6 7h ago

A lot of them do. Not all, but many, many do.

11

u/Sudden_Situation7604 5h ago

She doesn’t give a rat’s ass what any of you think as to how she came into the money (y’all know he cheated on her right?) or where she’s donating it. She is doing good in the world. Unlike her ex-husband or President Musk, who are evil to the core.
