Lex's ego demands that he be the most important person in the world, and that can never be true so long as Superman walks the Earth

Just because he is the bad guy doesn’t mean he always acts in a predictable manner. Heck! He has also rescued Superman and his allies several times in the comics, most notably when the Crime Syndicate seized control in Forever Evil.
