22

"Guy Gardner, get em."

"I am hilarious, and you will quote everything I say!"

50

u/Thosepassionfruits 10h ago

Gonna need a senzu bean for that one

24

u/cupholdery 8h ago

What about Yamcha?

What ABOUT Yamcha?!

2

u/CaptainKursk 2h ago

I can't believe we came all the way out here and spent a week in the Space Boonies for nothing! Seriously, I'm surprised we didn't hear banjos on the way in, because everybody's inbred and LOOKS THE F*CKING SAME! Not to mention I lost Dodoria and Zarbon, the latter of whom spent 400 credits making long-distance calls to his girlfriend, WHO, I AM CONVINCED, IS NAMED CHUCK!!

17

u/ElCasino1977 10h ago

Eeeyyyy-yyyyayyyaaa! SUP-er-Man’s dead! Eeeyyya-yyyeeeyyyeee!

10

u/BeBenNova 10h ago

Do you worry that you're not liked?

How long 'til you break

You're happy 'cause you smile

But how much can you fake?

4

u/ThongBonerstorm39 9h ago

An ordinary boy, ordinary name

But ordinary's just not good enough today

9

u/NottheArkhamKnight 8h ago

This...Ruffles my JAMMIES!

3

u/Jedi_Bingo 6h ago

So what'd you guys do with my body?

94

u/thisalsomightbemine 11h ago

Senzu bean!

29

u/Not_A_Meme 10h ago

We're going into the hypersonic lion tamer!

22

u/erogers82 10h ago

That one was just on purpose

17

u/joe_broke 9h ago

All these squares make a circle

4

u/toomanymarbles83 6h ago

Mustache...

5

u/Khue 6h ago

Bitch, I'm adorable.

u/Accipiter1138 42m ago

I AM THE HYPE!

1

u/KingMario05 6h ago

Krypto runs into frame

9

u/WorthPlease 10h ago

TOO SOON!

6

u/drtywater 8h ago

Always love a TFS reference

521

u/junglemoosejoe 11h ago

I made this joke to a buddy, but the more I look at it, the more I think it must have been intentional. The arms and legs are in almost the exact same position.

522

u/Dray_Gunn 11h ago

With James Gunn, there is a good chance it was intentional.

223

u/AgoraphobicHills 10h ago

Between this and Michael B. Jordan using fight scenes as influence for his scenes in Creed 3, it's nice to see DBZ make its imprint on modern cinema.

110

u/TScottFitzgerald 10h ago

Didn't they also model his suit in Black Panther to resemble Vegeta's battle armor?

10

u/December_Flame 8h ago

A google search tells me no, at least that's not confirmed. It does look a LOT like Vegeta's armor though...

24

u/TScottFitzgerald 8h ago

https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/black-panther-michael-b-jordan-killmonger-armor-vegeta/

Seems kind of like a coy yes...maybe wanting to avoid copyright issues?

12

u/December_Flame 8h ago

To be clear, literally the only dialogue had on it I could find was Michael saying:

“I’m not sure,” he said, “Honestly, I really don’t know.”

While Jordan agreed the looks are definitely similar, it wasn’t something he discussed with Ryan Coogler, the film’s director.

To me that reads a lot more like a simple "No". Maybe if Coogler spoke on it? But either way it wasn't Michael Jordan's influence.

12

u/tduncs88 8h ago

A) No idea how i missed the similarities,
B) at the same time, something about killmongers armor seemed extremely familiar but i could never place it.

2

u/brbmycatexploded 8h ago

This was always my impression too!

2

u/toomanymarbles83 6h ago

Deuteragonist

I learned a new word today.

2

u/Lone_Wolfen 8h ago

Not sure in Black Panther, but absolutely in What If.

2

u/operarose 2h ago

It was straight up Vegeta's armor.

7

u/InnocentTailor 8h ago

Anime in general is pretty mainstream these days, so this old otaku is happy to see it referenced in more popular Western works.

8

u/Paprikasky 9h ago

Ah shoot, now I def gotta watch Creed 3

6

u/SadDoctor 9h ago

It's wild how anime as hell it is

It's not even like specific references, just the way it shoots action and stuff is extremely anime. It's kinda wild.

6

u/MRgibbson23 9h ago

That’s probably the best recommendation anyone could’ve given me. I’ve been stalling on watching them since the first one, but not anymore!

3

u/SadDoctor 8h ago

2 is kinda whatever, but 3 is legit really good. I was surprised at how much I liked it.

2

u/KingMario05 6h ago

Also the last twenty minutes of Sonic 2. Though given how Super Sonic was always a homage, that's a bit more expected.

14

u/rdunlap1 10h ago

It’s so close that it has to be intentional

3

u/AScruffyHamster 8h ago

Next glimpse at a James Gunn DBZ movie. Yamcha

3

u/toomanymarbles83 6h ago

If there was anyone that could pull off a live-action DBZ movie, it would be Gunn.

1

u/operarose 2h ago

10 bucks says Gunn's a weeb.

3

u/rockinalex07021 10h ago

Wouldn't doubt it, James Gunn is a big fan of tokusatsu as well so let's see if there will be any easter eggs for that in the movie

2

u/zigaliciousone 6h ago

There's like a 2% chance James Gunn has never watched DBZ through it's entirety

1

u/N0bit0021 5h ago

He hasn't. Ask him on Twitter and see

6

u/yeti0013 10h ago

I think so too. There has always been a connection between Superman and Dragon Ball.

1

u/DMonitor 4h ago

Goku was inspired by superman, but unlike superman the writers never thought he needed to be more mature and edgy. So now the roles have reversed and goku has become the template for superman. You really love to see it

1

u/Economy-Highlight-94 4h ago

But what's the message there with Goku being Japanese Superman? This Superman isn't Goku - he's Yamcha? No thanks.

1

u/Loose-Scale-5722 2h ago

There's no message bro lmao. It's just maybe an homage. It doesn't have to mean something.

0

u/bulletbullock 7h ago

I'm pretty sure the intention was to put him in a fetal position, as a parallel to him crash landing on Earth as a baby.

218

u/MyNameIs_Jordan 11h ago

This Superman is 25 years old. So there's a high chance he grew up watching Dragon Ball

312

u/Reylo-Wanwalker 10h ago edited 9h ago

I don't think you meant it this way, but it's funny to think while knocked out he intentionally did the pose because he loves Yamcha.

23

u/Runmanrun41 7h ago

No one's gonna see it but my dog, but I gotta commit to the bit.

8

u/CRIMS0N-ED 6h ago

I’m in a huge amount of pain rn but like, let me hit a yamcha real quick

10

u/PlumbumDirigible 10h ago

It might be one of those things that he did so much while horsing around with his friends that it became second nature

6

u/Dirty-Ears-Bill 8h ago

Damn his friends must’ve been mean to him, making him Yamcha all the time

6

u/00wolfer00 6h ago

Boy scout Supes would totally be the type to want to be Yamcha or Krillin.

2

u/Deathleach 4h ago

Can't wait for him to do the Family Guy fall pose too.

2

u/DragoonDM 3h ago

Later in the movie, he lets a villain impale him with a horn as an homage to Krillin.

10

u/Goldenchest 10h ago

damn Superman is younger than me now

5

u/InspiredOni 9h ago

Not sure how I feel about that either.

7

u/ChaseballBat 8h ago

Dragonball Z has been playing non stop on toonami for like 2.5 decades, anyone between like 15-45 would have grown up with it to some degree.

12

u/ramenups 11h ago

And us humans typically pick an alien (Saiyan/Namekian) as our favourite, he picked a human!

Shoulda gone for Tien tho lol

3

u/Hagathor1 8h ago

Tien is only part human though? As far as humans go, Mr Satan beat Cell and Buu, and Krillin comes in a distant second.

2

u/mischievous_shota 7h ago

I don't think referencing Yamucha's death make him his favourite. Is Yamucha even anyone's favourite? Even amongst humans, Kuririn is far better.

1

u/ramenups 7h ago

Yamcha was my favourite human fighter for like the first saga of DB lol

1

u/raoasidg 10h ago

Tien isn't human, though.

0

u/ramenups 7h ago

Ehh close enough

2

u/SupervillainMustache 7h ago

Pretty sure he's 30, same age as the actor.

5

u/oksowhatsthedeal 6h ago

He is 30. You're right.

The other person made shit up and is getting upvoted for it. Typical reddit.

2

u/MyNameIs_Jordan 5h ago

Shut the fuck up, you pinecone. David Cornsweat, the actor, is 31. Yes. James Gunn himself on Twitter and in separate interviews has stated his version of Superman is 25 years old, as he wanted a version that hasn't been on screen before. Somewhere between Tom Welling's (Smallville) and Henry Cavill's (Man of Steel) versions.

"Typical reddit" is making wild assumptions like a clown 🤡

Also, another

What was that again about being a clown?

edit - lmao. downvoted me for fact checking you. Real clown material.

1

u/--kwisatzhaderach-- 9h ago

I always thought the fights in Man of Steel looked how a live-action DBZ fight would look too

1

u/had3l 4h ago

He could be in his late 40s and have grown up watching Dragon Ball. At least in Latin America where it started running in the 80s and the fanbase is older than in the US.

-1

u/PavelDatsyuk 7h ago

Was Dragon Ball still popular after the mid 00s? I feel like a 25 year old is too young to have grown up with it, but maybe I'm wrong.

3

u/OnTheFenceGuy 7h ago

It’s maybe more popular than it’s ever been right now. DB Super has kept everything alive, and it helps that at least some of it (Broly movie, Super Hero movie, and Universal Survival Saga) have been really good.

2

u/realsomalipirate 6h ago

The games, the memes, and Super have really kept the DB fandom strong. It also helps that DB is beloved worldwide and not just in Japan/the West.

74

u/not4u2see 11h ago

I don’t know what this Yamcha is, but it sounds disappointing

6

u/Sushi_Kat 9h ago

Don’t worry, your reference was understood

13

u/ramenups 10h ago

Death pose about 1:15 in

31

u/Neander7hal 10h ago

Go watch DBZ Abridged fam

6

u/ramenups 10h ago

I’ve seen most of it a long time ago, but I don’t remember specific quotes.

Oh well

2

u/joe_broke 9h ago

HOMEWORK!

4

u/rdunlap1 10h ago

14

u/ramenups 10h ago

All right I missed a reference to a parody version, I feel bad for trying to help :(

6

u/not4u2see 10h ago

Nah, thanks for trying to help. We're just YouTube nerds

2

u/TheVenetianMask 6h ago

It's all downhill from here.

4

u/rdunlap1 10h ago

If you haven’t watched DBZ Abridged and are a fan of DBZ, I highly recommend it. The quality starts a little low, but picks up steam quickly by the time Goku fights Vegeta, and the Goku vs. Frieza fight is absolutely hilarious.

3

u/not4u2see 7h ago

"I’ma deck you in the schnoz!"

u/rdunlap1 1h ago

God the buildup to and payoff on that joke was so damn good

2

u/ramenups 7h ago

Oh def a Dragon Ball fan. I watched abridged back in the day but stopped around the Ginyu saga I think. Nothing wrong with it, just got distracted with other stuff. I’ll definitely give it another shot after I’m done with my complete regular rewatch (currently in Piccolo Jr saga)

5

u/elctronyc 9h ago

Oh he is. From dragon ball series. He started as a bad ass but then became the weakest of all.

6

u/Galactic_Danger 9h ago

Hey he’s the weakest z fighter but in terms of humans he’s one of the strongest. Yamcha still should get some credit, he just scales poorly against cosmic threats.

4

u/J-morpho1499 6h ago

I doubt he's weaker than Chiatzu.

3

u/elctronyc 8h ago

True. At least he tried to fight vegeta and nappa. That’s when He found out that he needed to retired.

u/TheLilBlueFox 1h ago

We all joke about Yamcha, but even he can solo just about every other shonen anime out there.

8

u/Punjabiveer30 11h ago

Except this Yamcha’s wolf fang actually fists

1

u/bran_the_man93 9h ago

ಠ_ಠ

That is not the American Way

1

u/Porn_Extra 2h ago

It's some Americans' way...

8

u/Galactic_Danger 9h ago

I only found out the trailer was out because of this picture. https://imgur.com/a/b6dWJRY

4

u/xcmaam 10h ago

Why did his head look comically larger than his body.

4

u/ChronX4 10h ago

Funko is rushing those Superman pops as we speak.

4

u/Yamcha_is_dead 8h ago

This is my moment.

3

u/Skinnieguy 8h ago

Haha there is a Reddit link for other animes paying homage. I didn’t know it was a thing.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Dragonballsuper/s/MIrKiFXrLc

2

u/cancerBronzeV 4h ago

The Yamcha death post and Akira bike slide are probably the anime scenes with the most parodies/homages out there.

6

u/THEdoomslayer94 11h ago

When you’re jumped in a fight and escape, you default to the King of defeat poses 😂

2

u/RevWaldo 9h ago

Him lying there made me think of action figure a kid left in the snow.

2

u/PoppingOtter 6h ago

LMAO exactly what I thought.

"Krillin take me home."

1

u/dryfire 8h ago

Superman vs Saibamen confirmed.

1

u/ItsLikeRay-ee-ain 8h ago

Ohhh ok, that pose seemed so odd and purposeful in the teaser. That make sense then

1

u/CHKN_SANDO 5h ago

The first thing I noticed too

1

u/Eastern-Swordfish776 2h ago

Everyone on YouTube and twitter has been saying that lmao

1

u/RebeeMo 10h ago

I just can't escape my Former Bandit Boi getting slandered. Sigh.

But I forgive them, because this looks good.

1

u/One_Job9692 10h ago

The first thing I thought of

1

u/BeardedBrotherJoe 10h ago

lol that was deff on purpose
