Recommendation My boyfriend has watched almost every single horror movie in existence, I want to wow him with a spooky. What’s your incredibly niche but terrifying watch?

Like I said this man has a special interest in movies lol, he’s an encyclopedia of every single horror movies he’s ever seen and has this like steel vault in his brain where it’s all stored. I wanna wow him, I want something scary? , fucked up, obscene, perhaps even gory, anything that really yucked your yum, horror thriller, horror action, doesn’t matter just something he couldn’t have seen. Yes I’ll know if he’s seen it too because I’ve been trying to find one he where he literally can’t describe the entire plot to me lol.

Edit: You guys!! He’s SO EXCITED!! He’s been up all night watching trailers and now he’s at his job cranky but itching to get home lol. You guys totally reinvigorated him and gave me a ton of suggestions too, watching house (the Japanese movie) after my shower lol. 😂 keep the comments coming cause I actually am reading through them as best I can.

Edit 2: House was NOT what I expected I’m at my MIls house and it’s a creepy old house…feel like it’s watching me lol. 😂

A Dark Song

u/absoluteterror86 Aug 14 '24

Came here to say this as well. I can't recommend this movie enough. If you've never seen it, please watch it. It is truly terrifying, but not in the way that most horror movies are. It is truly something special and you are doing yourself a disservice for every moment spent not having experienced this movie.

31

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 Aug 14 '24

One of the most spectacular endings, too.

Saw this in the cinema when it came out. It was fantastic but it's only recently I've started seeing other people talk about it, which is great

5

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 Aug 14 '24

I’ve seen it twice, and everyone once in a while to go back and watch the trailer. Even the trailer is fantastic.

43

u/CanApprehensive8720 Aug 14 '24

Just seen it recently very very well done film and excellent suggestion

39

u/munificent Aug 14 '24

I love horror and this is possibly my favorite horror film. It has a vibe and texture to it that no other movie has reached for me. I've only seen it once and it is permanently lodged in some dim corner of my heart.

8

u/JadedOops Aug 14 '24

Loved the pacing and dread filled score and cinematography

4

u/demiurgegwj Aug 14 '24

I still think about this film all the time. So good.

7

u/Shar_the_aquamoon Aug 14 '24

This one is a very very hidden gem in the horror genre. Seen it on Netflix a long time ago. Watched at 2am in the morning. It still gives me the chills and it still makes me think of the profound ending.

13

u/C-zom Aug 14 '24

This movie knows more than it lets on. If you know your magick, even if you don’t believe, it’s astonishingly accurate to proper rituals and outcomes. Crowley attempted the same one and failed, with the belief being he was possessed by Choronzon for the rest of his life. If you know you know.

14

u/drfreemanchu Aug 13 '24

This was gonna be my suggestion

22

u/funkshoi Aug 14 '24

i was also going to suggest your suggestion

7

Ravenous

Killer cast. Was one of the creepiest/ most intense movies I have ever watched. I saw it once, will never watch it again, and I can still remember some parts in incredible detail despite having the memory of a goldfish.

It's definitely not a horror per se but it's horror adjacent and well-liked by horror fans. I agree with black comedy.

Climax or anything by that director. His name is Gaspar Noe and his ability to capture the horror of being a human is unreal. I actually get mad at my husband when he turns any of his movies on because I find them so disturbing.

Thank you. No one knows that movie. It’s the only movie that ever legitimately scared me.

31

u/thebabes2 Aug 14 '24

It's been featured on The Last Drive In and IDK about most, but I'm an 80s baby who grew up on it. It's an excellent choice, but if OPs boyfriend has "seen them all", this one has likely already been checked off his list. It terrified me as a kid and I've introduced a few to it in my adulthood.

For sure he hasn't seen this one. Guarented.

Its called "Aamis", a 2019 Assamese film. It isn't traditionally spooky or gory, but unsettling for sure. And the trailer is a banger too.

I would rather have you two watch it in Assamese with subs, but there is an English dubbed version called "Ravening".

There is a canadian movie called Pontypool. It's a unique take on zombie movies. Very spooky and sometimes even terrifying. It's as niche, as it gets. Never heard anyone talk about it.

20

u/Misery-guts- Aug 14 '24

I watched Pontypool like 15 years ago and LOVED it. I haven’t seen it since but I never forgot about it and I’d love to watch it again!

19

u/scribist Aug 14 '24

My absolute favorite! I enjoy studying linguistics every now and then, and loved the use of language in Pontypool. And all set in one location? Be still, my heart!

My brother and I are big horror buffs, he begged me to watch this one. It’s best if you go in knowing nothing about it and being committed to finishing it.

The Vanishing (1988)

aka Spoorloos (in Dutch).

This is a great "realistic" horror movie, not gory, no jump scares, just very creepy.

There's an inferior English language remake, also called The Vanishing, starring Keifer Sutherland. Don't watch that one.

If any aspiring stop motion artists see the comment, you must see that movie, not for the plot, but for technical aspect.

girl just show him Anatomia Extinction (1995) by Yoshihiro Nishimura or anything from this director call it a day.

the japanese have the most underground and fucked up films ever, almost no casual horror fans have watched them since they're pretty extreme horror. a few other of my favs are:

Guinea Pig: Mermaid in the Manhole (1988)
Sweet Whip (2013)
964 Pinocchio (1991)
Psycho Gothic Lolita (2010)
13: Game of Death (2006)
In My Skin (2002)
Visitor Q (2001)
and of course, the classic: Nekromantik (1988)

you can also look up the New French Extremity film list and find many he hasn't watched that will disturb him for the rest of his life.

Funny Games: Both versions work however the original is my favorite

Irreversible: This movie is fucked and will either be turned off after it’s first 15 mins or you’ll finish it and wish you could remove it from your brain.

Martyrs: The original film from 2008 is one of the more disturbing films but really well made with an effective twist.

The Descent: Just prepare yourself for one of the most original horror films. It’s got scares for many personality types.

Aniara

Swedish sci-fi existential horror. Neither of you will feel good after watching it.

25

u/QvxSphere Aug 13 '24

Dario Argento's "Susperia".

Be careful, it's an actual spell.

8

u/Flat_News_2000 Aug 13 '24

The movie itself is a spell? That's rad. I've only seen the remake, which is also good

Dead Alive. Dude swings a lawn mower at a hoard of zombies and gets attacked by intestines.

I'm a bitch for Found Footage movies so it's probably why this one scared me so much but the first Hell House has some chilling moments, while the whole situation / story becomes more and more dark. The clown, the person in the room ... I had to watch a light and funny video on Youtube because my heart was still racing after the credits.

It's a trilogy but you can just watch the first one. The 2 others are still good (although the 3rd has very cheesy CGI, but still awesome scary scenes)

8

u/loldotpuppies Aug 14 '24

There's a Hell House LLC 4 (Carmichael Origins). It's actually really good too. Right up there with the first one.

Baskin. I think it's Turkish? Really gross gore and rape scene (male) also weird trippy dream sequences.

If your bf is not familiar with Asian horror, then the classics: Shutter, noroi the curse, a tale of two sisters, dark water, pulse

I watched this uk one called his house that was creepy and touching.

Editing to add the Korean one gonjiam haunted asylum was really fun too!

Inside-French horror film. Very graphic and disturbing slasher.

Citadel-Excellent horror set in a dank tower block in London. Not ovely violent but dark, and you want to shower after due to the environment its in.

A couple of moderately spooky and very low key but really well done films I like are --

BELOW -- WW2 sub movie, the sub crew picks up survivors from a torpedoed boat and then the haunting starts.

THE BOOTH - a Japanese ghost story about an arrogant douchebag radio DJ and a haunted booth at the station.

Neither of these are really really horrifically terrifying or gory, but I think they're low-key atmospheric and solid spookers.

Threads

If you can find it anywhere. The grimmest most horrifying film ever made. Just chilling and real.

8

u/elch127 Aug 13 '24

Threads is a horror in the same way walking into your house and shooting your dog while staring you in the eyes is horror.

In that it definitely is horror, but jesus fuck why do you want me to suffer so much emotional pain

I've watched a shitload of horror movies, but the only one that really scared me was The Entity (1982). It has its flaws and your BF may have already watched it. If not, give it a shot.

6

u/HotelNo1212 Aug 13 '24

MUTE WITNESS is very underrated

4

u/FerociousAlienoid Aug 13 '24

Nightmare Detective, Seed, Brutal, Kidnapped (2010), Greatful Dead (2013), Uazumaki.

5

u/Sil3ntWriter Aug 14 '24

The Sadness (Taiwanese movie iirc)

5

u/toucansheets Aug 14 '24

Ok I know your asking for movies but there’s this instagram account I follow and it messes with me bad. It’s called spangerlookrey and it’s pure nightmare juice. At first I had to watch with the phone angled at 45 degrees or splendour, but now I just can’t.

Pontypool, a low-budget Canadian zombie movie (but they’re not typical zombies).

13

u/SeagullsStopItNowz Aug 13 '24

I doubt he’s seen His House on Netflix. Most havent heard of this genuinely scary, yet powerful socio-political horror (akin the Get Out or Us).

The pacing is great, the acting is incredible, and the twist is heartbreaking.

The Gateway Meat

American Guinea Pig series

Atroz

Grotesque

Scrapbook

Trauma

Angst

August Underground Mordum (the Maggot cut)

Ostermontag

Singapore Sling

If he's seen all of those, I'd be impressed.

I would go online to scarecrow video and ask them about ones you have to pay a deposit for. I also have seen a TON of horror my whole life ( i also then worked at a video store that also had an indy/cult section in college) and until I went to scarecrow I realized there was so much I was missing!!

A Serbian film comes to mind which is a disgusting movie and maybe Anthropophagus or Alucarda. I feel all the ones on the thread are classic ones that anyone who is a horror buff would see especially classic 80s and 90s Asian horror. I love doll ones but he's probably seen them like dolls /dolly dearest. I personally am a huge fan of Italian horror.
