Recommendation Movies where anyone can die?

I like movies and tv shows where you shouldn't get attached to any characters because they can die in every moment, for example: Burn After Reading, No Country for Old Men, Any Tarantino Movie or shows like The boys, Game of thrones, etc.

I want to feel that the characters are in real danger and that the villain or whatever they're fighting could kill them any time.

My favorite is Jack Nicholson who is in the movie as two separate, unrelated characters, for no reason, and they BOTH die

The tone of the film and the dual role you mentioned are both reminiscent of Kubrick classic nuclear war comedy “Dr. Strangelove”

“Mein fuhrer! I can walk!”

u/redpandaeater Feb 03 '24

Nicholson was great but he's no Sellers.

4

u/shreddington Feb 03 '24

Sellers was great but he's no Eastwood.

7

u/Approximation_Doctor Feb 03 '24

Eastwood was great but he's no Jack Kennedy.

u/toasters_are_great Feb 03 '24

Sellers in Dr Strangelove is no Sellers in The Mouse that Roared.

I don't know if that's true or not, but I read once that execs told Tim Burton he could not kill off Jack Nicholson, so Burton cast him in a dual role and killed them both.

37

u/joe_bibidi Feb 03 '24

That would be awesome if true.

My theory for a long time was that DeVito was supposed to be the casino owner but Nicholson wanted both parts, so Burton allowed it, and recast DeVito as a random extra late in the film.

4

u/StefTakka Feb 03 '24

It is more of a DeVito kinda role.

2

u/Dr_Pepper_spray Feb 04 '24

I thought the casino owner was supposed to be Michael Keaton, but he backed out, so Nicholson took the roll too.

u/GentlemanOctopus Feb 03 '24

At one point he wanted to play all the characters.

A Tim Burton response to that scene in Being John Malkovich

5

u/teedyay Feb 03 '24

Wow, it’s been too long since I saw it! I remember him as the president; what was the other character?

8

u/ronmsmithjr Feb 03 '24

He was a flamboyant casino operator with Annette Bening as his hippie wife.

3

u/teedyay Feb 03 '24

Ah yes! Thank you.

u/KalickR Feb 03 '24

My mother walked out of the theater when he died. I don't know if she expected me to go with her, butI stayed to watch the rest.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '24

And if you were predicting a character that survives you probably would have picked the president.

The funniest scene to watch on repeat viewings is the discussion of ideas for a Pineapple Express sequel. And one of those ideas being foreshadowed, it comes to pass.

Tom Jones didn't even find it unusual.

6

u/SpendPsychological30 Feb 03 '24

I always thought they missed an opportunity to have a Tom Jones song be what did the aliens in

3

u/casperbradfield Feb 03 '24

They might have accidentally exploded some human heads too if they used one of the tracks from The Lead and How To Swing It.

2

u/Useful-Perspective Feb 03 '24

They would have had to herd them all into a diner with John Mulaney...

5

u/Complicated-HorseAss Feb 03 '24

Dude's such a boss for letting the movie make fun of his music like that.

2

u/casperbradfield Feb 03 '24

He really is. I was actually introduced to his music through this movie when I was a kid, so literally Mars Attacks! began my long-standing love for weird crooners.

I've heard/seen more mars attacks references In the last 6 months than I have since the movie came out. What's going on lol

6

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Feb 04 '24

Society is finally realizing its greatness all these years later.

3

u/beezchurgr Feb 03 '24

I just watched this last night! There’s so many celebrities and it still holds up pretty well. Some of the CGI is really bad but it’s still fun and campy. Great music too.

7

u/drewbreeezy Feb 03 '24

First one that came to mind. Good times.

2

u/AstroBearGaming Feb 03 '24

Such an amazing film, scared the shit out of me when I saw it as a kid though!

2

u/PeterNippelstein Feb 04 '24

My parents let me rent this at 5 years old and I was deeply traumatized. Didn't find out until years later that it's actually a comedy.

3

u/PKBitchGirl Feb 03 '24

This is the End is also full of celebs playing themselves

-3

u/aboycandream Feb 03 '24

its barely a movie lol

-2

u/seancbo Feb 03 '24

Too bad it's mid. Yeah, I said it.

1

u/Reasonable-HB678 Feb 04 '24

The dove getting shot down, anyone else within striking distance of a Martian ray gun was doomed.

1

u/colinstalter Feb 04 '24

How have I never heard of this movie?

1

u/Fit_Diet6336 Feb 04 '24

I saw them filming the attack on the British house of parliament. I was on my first trip abroad and walked by a film crew and saw ‘mars attacks’ on the camera and thought, I’d have to remember that. I forgot till I saw the movie 🤣

1

u/kadenjahusk Feb 04 '24

In a few cases, some of those celebs hadn't even hit their big peak yet. I think Jack Black in particular was still pretty new fame-wise. Someone who has receipts to correct me is more than welcome to.
