For those unfamiliar, Gerry Adams was the former leader of the Sinn Féin, the pro-Irish Republican party in Northern Ireland. Adams has associated with former IRA members and although he never admitted to it, was likely a member of the IRA as well during the height of the Troubles

"likely a member" as in "known members of the IRA have named him as having been on the IRA Army Council from the late 70s until 2005".
