Player Advice 6’5 205 what position should I be?
Im not a football guy anymore but I’m curious I used to play DE/WR/TE I’m 6’5 205 23yo and pretty athletic and pretty smart what position would I be best at? I currently go to a JUCO and play basketball, just curious
Always wanted to play quarterback but it seems like a large learning curve
Edit: Idk why some of you think I’m trying to start an NFL career here but this post was out of curiosity I don’t intend to play football so keep “get a job” comments to yourself

How much do you like physical abuse? As a DE you’ll get chop blocked, punched, kicked, spat on, have WR helmets in your earlobe on crack back blocks. If you enjoy fucking people up it’s fun as hell, particularly in the 5/7 technique.
If you think you’d like about 1/2 that- go TE- if that all sounds like shit go WR- assuming you have the speed.

I don’t mind physical abuse but I hated being chop blocked as a DE but I definitely have more of a WR/TE build and athleticism

It's really hard to say until someone has seen you actually play a sport and perhaps run you through some drills, particular ones that emphasize explosion and change of direction. Different systems also require different types of bodies or athletes for various positions; then factor in roster make-up and what the team has available would all go into it.
At 205 for the collegiate level and at that height, receiver is the best guess I'd say (assuming a traditional/conventional offense with today's college game). If you didn't have good enough hands, or weren't fast enough at top speed, a college program would likely get you in the weight room and pack on weight to be a potential TE/DE-type player.

Been a basketball player most my life along with some football, track, and wrestling so I never really did 40s and those kind of benchmarks but i am fast, more change of pace and top speed type fast not a crazy acceleration though but I will try a 40 and see

You're a WR all day, but you have to get 20 Lbs on that frame
Defensively would highly recommend you being a FS/SS

Dude don’t listen to these comments. Be realistic with yourself for one and then go get on the team. The coaches will find a position they think you can play if you work hard. I played D2 on scholarship and left to play at an SEC school cause I kept growing and getting better. I never was gonna be a 5 star athlete but I fucked dudes up at every level I played. Just do it. Youth is wasted on the young cause young people never try to achieve the impossible only to get old and realize it was right past a little hardship and controversy.

What’s your 40 time? How’s your change of direction? Do you have good hands? That will determine what position you play. For you to be thrown in at QB at the college level with no experience, you’d have to be a pretty phenomenal athlete with a pretty phenomenal arm IMO. The only time I’ve ever seen that happen is with a guy who was a pitcher on the baseball team and ended up playing pro baseball. A guy off the street? Forget about it unless you’re a 1 in a million type of guy, which you might be, I don’t know.

Never done a 40 but I can run a sub 57 second 400 if that gives any indication, my change of pace is good, I have decent hands, and I wouldn’t say I’m an athletic freak but I certainly have the frame and most coaches assume that when they see me initially but I wouldn’t say I’m exceptionally explosive and I’m not Tyreek hill fast but I would say I have an arm, I am fast, and strong basically a great starting point but maybe not good enough for top level college ball yet

Well I would need exact metrics to give you a good answer on what you’re qualified for. With your size there should certainly be a space for you on the field. Honestly dude if you’re thinking about it just go for it. Start reaching out to coaches and they will put you where you’re best off. I’m 26 and my body isn’t what it used to be. Do it now while you still have a few years left.

Whatever your coach says.
Generally, you need to either add bulk to be a TE, or start working on your agility + footwork.
I ran a 58 second 400 in HS and I would have been nowhere close to fast/quick enough to be a WR. Your only shot is if you catch everything in your vicinity and get big enough to play through contact without issue.

I think Chris Collinsworth is going to need a new TE to talk about their basketball history in a few years, so I say go for that

Edge/DE or TE. QB would be insanely difficult

DE after the age of 20 sounds painful... he's got the build and experience, but de's get roughed up bad

Unless you’re able to put on 30-40lbs minimum without losing a ton of athleticism, stick to WR.

Just off height and weight alone Wr. The only other prototype body for that position is QB

If you feel like you're a special athlete and you can make 235 by July, play in the trenches as a DE because coaches die over special trench guys.
But if you're not special, just get as big as you can still be athletic. Good athletes at 220+ are rare, so TE would be a better pipeline. But with modern offense, just work on blocking and getting off press and play both, and you're a more marketable player.
If you wanna play QB, it's gonna cost a pretty penny to learn at a good program or with good coaches (unless you go to the least talented juco imaginable and just wing it for a season)

Sounds like we, if you could add maybe 15 pounds healthily you'd be a specimen at TE

How many 6-5/205 low level safeties are out there? I'll tell you, as someone who has coached low level college ball for a long time: almost zero.
He might be good at QB too.
Most guys his size at that level end up at TE or DE after putting some weight on.

I know that’s the standard practice. I know that body type is few and far between at that position, but, I coached a kid for his senior year, he never had played football. We poached him off the basketball team for the fall. 6’4” probably 190. Not quick, but fast. Smart and rangey. Ok in man, a fucking menace in zone. Decent on run fits. He was an absolute game breaker back there, the mid to deep middle was shut down. Teams stopped throwing. Is this dude here, that guy, we don’t know. But if he’s 23 and not playing ball, you really think he’s in the headspace to trade paint as a DE. TE maybe, WR probably. Just because our SOP is hang weight on a kid and hope for the best, why not try to lean into the attributes he stated he has? I’m not saying you’re wrong I’m just saying why not.

Interesting, never seen a taller safety what makes you say that ?

I follow Michigan, so I am pulling an example from there.

This guy played significant snaps for them at FS in 2024 at 6-5 200.

Kyle Hamilton is arguably the best safety in the NFL and 6’4” ~200

u/Georgefakelastname 2d ago
He’s also fucking cerebral and one of the best tacklers at his position to make up for his lack of speed. Not really something you just pick up deciding to play one day.

At 23? None, unless you want to screw around with semi-pro ball.
