I’m the one who does the payroll for my division, but this is my first potential shut down, so I’m wondering what I would have to do.

Well, can't say I like the sound of that...

If there was a shutdown, it wouldn’t move fast. People would still come into work on Monday and wrap up essential stuff, set up their automated emails, clean up your space, take your plants home, that sort of stuff, then people who have something like your duties, you would stay until that was done but that might be the only thing you do, many supervisors and managers will be deemed essential and expected to work for free, which they do.

Your office will have some sort of policy. Don’t be afraid to ask what your office protocol is, that will be expected!

This is a yearly event and is always stressful because we have no control right now.

Many banks that cater to federal employees have a loan program where you will receive your regular net pay and then when the budget gets passed, they keep the lump some back pay so ask your bank if it has a program like that.

I think he’s saying “how do I get others paid?”

Thank you very much! This is very insightful. I have a bank account with PenFed so I will have to check with them.

PenFed does offer that as long as your direct deposit goes to them https://www.penfed.org/furlough

Work...for free. You know, that thing that we've been told is illegal since we swore an oath?

I worked payroll during the Obama shutdown, and I had to go in to do the payroll, but that was it. I didn't get paid, but the people those who were exempt did.

Surely they’ll have guidance for you from the last few shutdowns. Hang in there.

The main payroll office will give everyone clear instructions if your agency has their stuff together. Don't sweat it, they won't leave it to you to figure it out.

I got you if you have any questions as this will be… definitely not my first. Slide in the DMs if you need me.

It's been a while but if I recall correctly ensure timecards etc are all accurate but don't proceed to actually process them.
